When Relon awoke, he expected to find himself back aboard the S.S. Anne. His meeting with Eevee and Absol, his odd fateful encounter with Sabrina, his reunion with his aunt, the assault on the lab by Team Chaos; all of it.
Instead, he found himself in the recently vanquished Team Chaos' resting quarters.
"A… bed?" Relon mumbled as his vision began to fix itself
"Oh, you're awake!"
Looking to his left, he was met with the same navy-haired young beauty that he encountered.
"Dawn…?" Consciousness regaining clarity, he blinked a few times before the kind smile on the girl's face could be recognized. "Hey…" He offered a tired smile in greeting only to freeze up.
With how she was leaning slightly over himself and her ragged dress clearly not meant for her own body, he could see modest portion of her cleavage.
Feeling a slight heat well within, he could only attempt to retrain his hormones from leaking out as best he could by slightly averting his gaze.
"You okay?" He asked, one side wishing to burn the sight into his memory and the other too pure to look at such a defenseless girl.
Inwardly blinking at the question, her smile returns once more.
"Worrying about others before yourself?" He truly was kind-hearted. "No need to worry, thanks to you, everyone and myself are free. We couldn't be any better."
"Oh… that's good. And I seriously couldn't have done it without the help of everyone. You included, Dawn. We earned this win together."
She didn't know why, but the usage of that last word tugged at a string. A string that just made her happiness grow ever so more.
"Hey! Don't forget about me!"
Attention diverting from one another, both could only look over and to a small pokémon sitting on the bedside floor. Relon knew it to be a dark-type. Yet, it wasn't Eve, his umbreon. Instead, it was a small black and gray furred little fox with red socks and a tuft atop its head.
Carefully sat up before swinging his legs over the side of the bed.
"Hey, take your time!" She urged, stopping him from moving further. "You just woke up after… everything that happened."
"I'm fine, Dawn. Really. If anything, I'm more curious on this Zorua than anything." Looking to see if he was truthful, she relented as he nodded his thanks before crouching down to the fox.
"Zorua's been quietly watching over you even before I came in."
"Have they?" One look at the nodding Zorua told that to be true. "Um, hello?" He awkwardly greeted for the Zorua's eyes to gleam in delight as it jumped in excitement nuzzling his face. "Okay, okay! Nice to meet you too!" He laughed. "I just wish I- wait…" Then it clicked. "Zorua? You wouldn't happen to be that same zorua that helped us against Team Chaos in the cave holding the Form Rock, would you?"
"Hehehe, yup yup! I can't believe it's really you!" The small fox exclaimed, the voice of a giddy boy matching his energy.
"Okay, wait, then you also ended up here with Absol!"
"Yup yup! Though, those bad guys didn't care for a pokémon like me I guess cause they pummeled me and took her off somewhere else while I just went into a cage."
"Are you alright?! You're not still hurt are you?!" His instinct to care for others was something spoken of as a noble and kind-hearted trait. Something Relon personally could not help.
"Huh? Oh yeah, I'm fine. That was a while back but I'm good now! See?" Hopping off, Zorua jumps into a ball of light before becoming an eevee to then revert to normal. "Absol was actually the one to defend me when we first arrived, despite her own injuries. She was really cool!"
Relon had to admit, Zorua was an energetic little guy, despite the condition he was in as were himself and Sabrina and Absol.
"You do realize we all… you know?"
"What, died? Heck yeah! You fell into the water, Absol went and brought you out, you weren't moving, she was giving CPR, there was this white flash from you, and then BAM! Here we are."
"... Huh?"
"What's wrong? Want me to repeat what I said? I don't mind. You fell-"
"Whoa whoa whoa, time out. Sorry, just… Absol pulled me out?"
"Yup."
"Then I… glowed a light that just got bigger?"
"Yup yup."
"That… doesn't make sense." He furrowed.
"Um…"
It was then that he realized he'd done it again. He'd gotten too lost in talking to a pokémon. The same bad habit it showed to Sabrina back when talking to Masquerain.
"O-Oh! Sorry, Dawn! I got so lost in talking to Zorua that I, uh, I'll just say sorry about that." He could only rub the back of his head sheepishly.
"No, it's fine. It's just… you seemed so lost in it, talking to Zorua I mean that I didn't want to interrupt."
Taken aback, he couldn't help but find that act respectful.
"Thanks, Dawn. It's a bad habit I've had since I was a kid. Talking on and on to whatever pokémon without being aware of my surroundings. It doesn't help that I can understand them now, haha. If anything, my habit will only get worse." He chuckled.
"Keep that attitude up and it certainly won't," a voice cuts in.
Head lifting up, his scrunched eyes opened wide at the pokégirl leaning against the door frame.
"Absol!"
"Shut it, I'm still fucked up from all of that pervert bastard's shit." Momentarily adjusting to her language, he could only watch as she limped to take a seat at the edge of his bed.
"Are… you-"
"If you ask 'are you okay?' I'm going to punch you," she scowls.
"Hey! There's no need to talk to Relon like that!" Dawn defends.
"Oh? So now you have little miss slave thinking her voice matters," Absol smirks. "Too bad," her smug sneer turns to a glare. "You aren't involved so buzz off."
For a moment, it seemed like she was going to back down. Then Relon saw it. The once dim fire in her eyes that swelled upon being free repeated itself.
From the small stool she sat atop she rose, putting herself directly in front of Relon and Zorua.
"Whether or not I am, I don't care! I'm here to make sure Relon stays rested and well. If you have an issue with him, then you also have an issue with me!"
Relon didn't know what to think, much less feel.
Dawn, a recently freed girl from abuse and other nefarious things that bastard of a scientist did to her and the others, not only was placing herself in harm's way of Absol but was doing so of her own volition. Good to know she had a backbone.
Still, he was touched. Even more than that, however, he refused to sit by and do nothing that would cause his new friend harm.
"Stop it, please." He spoke moving to place a hand on Dawn's shoulder earning her attention immediately. "Absol, Dawn is just like you and the others, isn't she? Why bother acting so hostile? We all made it out in one piece."
"Yeah!" Zorua pouts. "Don't be mean to Relon and Dawn! They're recovering just like you!" At that, Absol's red eye leers downward for the fox to sink into Relon's touch out of fear.
"Buzz off, Zorua. I have business with this meddlesome twerp, not you. Or that useless nobody."
"Who are you calling-" As Dawn was ready to partake in unleashing her fury, the words that came next ceased her train of thought.
"What happened in that cave, Absol?" The question was like a blade cutting through the air, leaving only silence in its wake.
He felt it, the power of Yveltal. Only it wasn't from him this time, but her that it seeped out. Her red eye glowed as her hair began to wave frantically to life revealing her other eye.
"What happened?!" Then the power unleashed a shockwave sending him and Zorua to slam against the wall. "YOU HAPPENED! YOU HAD TO GO AND PLAY HERO, SAVE US, ONLY FOR US ALL TO DIE AND END UP IN THE PAST BECAUSE OF YOU! IT WOULD HAVE BEEN FINE HAD YOU NOT BROUGHT TEAM FUCKING CHAOS WITH YOU! SHIT, WHY DID I DIVE IN AND PULL YOU UP?!" The power she was exuding, he could tell, was similar to his own when he went berserk.
Kneeling to hold Dawn and Zorua close to him, he could only grimace.
"Absol…" He growled, his own blood beginning to churn. Setting Zorua down and positioning himself in front of the frightened Dawn, his eyes bare their own anger. "Back off."
Now his own power was seeping out, though what everyone noticed as that happened was Absol's own begin to wane before it withered. At a loss, she finally stepped back to click her tongue.
"Should've just left you to drown and save my own hide. Now Eevee is gone… and I'm with these emotions and memories I don't want…"
Then… she began to tear up.
Full of such anguish, she could only hide her face behind her scrunched hands. Too taken aback by the sudden turn of events, Relon's own anger vanished as confusion took the reins again.
"I'm lost…" Dawn mumbled.
"Ditto. And not the pokémon," Zorua whispered, eyes locked on the distraught young woman though that seemed to bring her back from her short moment as her glare returned. "Eep!" He squeaked, scurrying behind Relon who only looked more confused than fearful.
Rising, Absol only looked at the three before bearing her hate-filled eyes on Relon's own still lost in the situation itself.
"Perfect. Everyone that needs to be here is."
One look past Absol found one Sabrina wearing her stoic demeanor as well as Eve and Anabel at her side. About to spout his name, she paused. Her own red eyes wandered from his downed state to Absol's neutral visage. Then she spoke.
"What did you do to him?" She growled.
Hands balling into fists, it seemed like Absol was about to fight before… she just gave up?
Hands receding, she simply scoffed before moving past the two.
"Where do you think you're going, Absol?" Sabrina questions, eyes on Relon as said pokégirl stops at the psychic's side.
"Try all you want with your little psychic trick. We both know that won't work on me, even if you were fully recovered so stay out of my way." With that, she turned the corner and departed down the hall.
Acknowledging the comment, Relon's eyes trailed down to the dim glow Sabrina's hands held catching said powers fade.
"Relon!" Looking down in time to catch the happy umbreon tackle him, he catches the happy girl nearly stumbling. "You're awake!"
"Y-Yeah. Careful, Eve, a lot keeps happening and I just need a moment."
Placing his starter on the bed, his eyes go to Dawn next.
"Sorry again about all that. You okay, Dawn?"
"Y-Yeah… A little shaken but…" She pauses to adjust herself in place for a deep breath to escape. "I've been through worse here so I shouldn't let something like that get to me. Least with having you here, I mean." Once again, he couldn't help but be lost in that endearing smile that gave him her voice. "So no need to worry about me!"
Accepting her words, he once again nods before turning to the psychic duo.
"Are you two okay?"
"Given we're not lab experiments and I finally feel my powers coming back, I'm better now."
"Glad to see you're doing better, Sabrina." He smiles for her to return the gesture, albeit with a much smaller form of the expression. Looking over to Anabel, he waited expectantly for her to perk at the notice before eliciting what could only be a silent giggle.
Teehee, I'm much better now thanks to your efforts, Relon. You don't have to worry about me.
But I'm still going to. He retorts, casual face denying the emotions in his words. You, Dawn, Sabrina, and even Absol, as well as the others; you've all been through so much. If you need help with anything, please, don't hesitate to call on me. I'm here to help in any way I can.
Blinking once at the heartfelt words that left his mind, she could only stare at that endearing smile he sported. All the while, unaware of how many smiles matching such fondness have already been exchanged in the room.
I will. Truly, you are a kind soul Relon.
Seriously, I'm just doing what anyone would.
It is because of that nature, that so many of us have already taken a liking to you. You not only saved us but that courage, strength and kind heart you possess is recognized by everyone. Should you ever be in need, do not hesitate to call upon myself. I shall do everything I can to be of assistance.
I will. Friends help one another, after all.
Friends… She mentally hummed before smiling once more, albeit just a little bigger. Yes, we do.
"Relon," the voice of Sabrina called, returning his focus on her. "I would like to discuss our 'circumstances' but Absol is not here so I suggest we delay that topic until we are all present."
"Makes sense. Absol mentioned some things that I want to get sorted out now that we're not in danger."
"Not to mention we now have food, water, and a place to rest." Eve chirps, having been resting on the bed with Zorua next to her.
"I honestly can't tell which is more comfier, these beds or the nests back in our previous lives," Zorua comments, Relon only nervously chuckling at the blunt comment of their previous lives.
"Wait till you're in a real bed!" Eve grins. "It's fluffier than an altaria's body. Especially when ur under the sheet. Aah~, so cozy. Being snuggled together with others is the best~."
"Ooh, Relon, can we try that later?"
"Jeez, you two." He chuckled. "So what now?" At his own question, a rumble came not from the Earth but his stomach. Immediately, his face tightened in embarrassment as giggles resounded around him. "Erm, I haven't exactly eaten anything since waking up, haha…"
"No need to worry, we've got plenty in the mess hall! I'll show you the way, come on!" Without time to react, Dawn took his hand in hers before practically dragging him out and down the hall.
"H-Hey, Dawn! Slow down a little!"
"Ooh, more food!" Zorua yips, bolting after the two.
"Hey, we just ate!" Eve complains dashing after her fellow dark-type.
Peering out the doorway as the rambunctious group grew smaller and smaller, Anabel couldn't help but let out a muted giggle.
Dawn certainly seems fond of Relon.
"Seems like it," Sabrina shrugs as they depart. "He did save her first before anyone else. It's only natural that she or any one else within the base have some level of respect for him."
I only hope the others won't react in a negative way to him.
"Because he's a male." At that, Anabel nods. "Everyone here has scars because of Team Chaos. You and I are no different. Relon is a kind person with a genuine heart. I know that much."
From your past life. At that, Sabrina is the one to nod.
"There's much to question but that can come later. Relon needs to recover more and we need to reach an understanding with Absol. She's a wild card at this moment."
You, Relon, Eve, and Absol all have your share of baggage. You divulged yours to me, Relon has likely done the same to Eve and vice versa, and the shouting from Absol earlier was likely her way of venting.
"Everyone shows a single emotion differently I suppose." Halting her step, Sabrina could only eye the hall where chatter resounded. "I… was never one to do that for a large portion of my life so I can't particularly dislike Absol for how she acted towards Relon, even if it wasn't right."
Though it's good to see you also care for Relon.
"Care?" She arches a brow at the mental comment. "Relon is the only person on this planet that remembers who I was, my status as a gym leader, and still showed such respect and admiration." At that, her eyes fall slightly. "Yet because I left him alone, he…"
Sabrina, he doesn't despise you. At that, she finally looked towards Anabel's gentle expression. Last night, while he was saving us and even a few moment ago, he spoke only of respect and the wanting to still protect everyone. Yourself included. Someone like him… makes living worth it. The power… to believe.
"He still… admires me?" She manages out dumbfounded by the revelation.
Yes. He even asked us to fetch him should we need help. Myself, Dawn, and you especially are included in that request. Could that blush I see indicate alternative feelings?
Spurred from her thoughts, Sabrina could only deadpan at the mute girl. "If you're attempting to jab at a certain area, then you should give up," Sabrina dismissed as both departed once again after the group.
Oh? What do you think I'm referring to? Despite Anabel's question, she couldn't hide the amused expression she sported upon earning another bland look from her once roommate.
"This conversation is over." With a huff, her pace quickened.
I didn't hear any denial~.
