Episode 19: On a Wingull and a Prayer!
Mew and her friends are walking along Rustboro City.
"I can't wait to get to Dewford Island," Mew says.
Pikachu and Eevee agree.
"And I also can't wait for my next gym battle," Mew says.
Then May says, "Hey, before we leave, don't you think we should try some of Rustboro City's famous pasta?"
"Any idea where we can get some? Certainly not in this neighborhood," Max asks.
He then looks around and sees boarded up buildings.
"Don't worry, little brother. I printed out these directions from the computer when we were at the Pokemon Center. Pretty smart, huh?" May says and smiles, "Oh, yum! Some pasta before we get on the boat would be perfect!"
But when they arrive, they find, to their shock, that the place was closed and boarded up.
"It's closed!" Tomo says, shocked.
"And it's all boarded up," Brock says.
"No way! It says right here this restaurant is on the most in places to eat list!" May cries out.
"Have you checked the date on the map?" Jen asks.
"Jen's right. It might be an out-of-date map," Max says.
"Hey, Max, I did! This article happened to have come out yesterday!" Max angrily says and looks at the map, "See? Says right here," But realizes something on the paper.
"Yeah? Go on," Brock says.
"So, what's the date on it, May?" Jen asks.
"Amaura," (Please tell us.) Amaura says.
"It's this month, and this day... from ten years ago," May says, weakly.
Everyone exclaims, "WHAT?!"
Having earned her first Hoenn gym badge, Mew and her hungry friends prepare to board a ferry bound for Dewford Island and the next gym battle.
"How can this be happening?" May asks.
"How can we find the boat if we can't find the port?" Brock adds.
"This is so weird," May says.
Soon, Max runs up, "Hey, guys! I found it! It's the port! Over there! Past the cape!"
Everyone soon spots it, miles away from them.
"What do you know?" May replies.
"I guess there's been a lot of change here in the last ten years," Brock says.
"Aww!" Mew, Jen, and Molly reply.
But May reassures, "Hey, guys, cheer up! We did find the beach after all, didn't we?"
"Lotta good that does if we're just gonna miss the boat anyway," Mew says.
May's smile and enthusiasm soon fades.
"What do we do now?" Molly asks.
"I'm pretty sure we must've already missed the morning by this time," Max says.
"That's right, so there's no point in getting all worked up when we can just sit back and have a soda and relax," Brock says.
"Good thinking! We got tons of time before the afternoon boat," Max says.
"I suppose you're right. I can use this time to come up with an idea on my battle, and to find a Pokemon Contest for me to compete in," Mew says.
"Good idea," Brock says, "After all, the gym isn't going anywhere.
Then May has an idea, "Hey, you guys enjoy your drink and I'm gonna go out and find us a boat!
Everyone was puzzled
"But May, how are you gonna find us a boat when there aren't any?" Max asks.
"Well, this used to be a port, didn't it? There's got to be a boat around here somewhere," May says.
"I can go with you," Jen says.
"Thanks Jen," May says.
Soon, May and Jen begin searching around for a boat.
"But, then again, maybe not," May says.
"I think you're right," Jen says.
"Not only no boats, there aren't even any people here," May says.
"The place is deserted," Jen says.
Soon, May and Jen are looking at the sea.
"I'm sure we'll think of something," Jen says.
"I hope so," May says.
Soon, May turns to her right to notice something, "What's that?"
What they see is a fisherman sitting on the pier looking to catch a bite
"Alright, an actual person! We'll ask him!" May says.
The girls then rush over to meet the fisherman. The fisherman is a man with a burgundy vest, blue shirt, gray pants, and brown shoes.
May walks over to him and asks, "Excuse us, sir, we'd like to ask you a question if you don't mind."
"I know, I know. You'd like to know why the fish have suddenly stopped biting today, right?" The fisherman says.
"Huh?" The girls respond.
Then the man says, "So, today's not your day. There's always tomorrow. Point is; you don't give in, you rise to the challenge, hear me?!"
"Yes, we do," May says.
"Loud and clear," Jen says.
And May says, "But that's really not what we wanted to ask you, sir."
The fisherman turns to the girls, "Hey, who the heck are you two, anyway? You both don't look familiar."
Right then and there, a Wingull flies down.
The fisherman says, "Ahoy, Peeko. So how'd you enjoy your strolling through the clouds?"
"What's that Pokemon?" May asks.
"It's a Wingull," Jen says.
May brings out her Pokedex, and Dextette says, "Wingull, the Seagull Pokemon. A Water and Flying Type. Wingull will fly through the skies as though surfing waves. It normally carries food and other valuable items then hides them here and there."
"Cool! So it's a Wingull," May says, "It's kinda cute."
But the man says, "Not kinda, Peeko is THE cutest. Yup. This cute little Peeko you're looking at here is my very favorite shining star."
Peeko calls out happily.
"Peeko, huh. That's a cute name," Jen says.
Then May and Jen approach Peeko.
Then May extends her hand, "Pleased to meet you, my name's May."
"And I'm Jen, and this is my partner Amaura," Jen says.
"Amaura," (Hello.) Amaura says.
But Peeko hides behind the fisherman.
The fisherman says, "Don't worry, Peeko's just a little bit shy around strangers. The only one Peeko really feels comfortable around is me."
"That's too bad," May says, "Hey there, Peeko. Come on, we're not so scary," and kneels down and extends both her arms, "Let's be buddies, okay?"
Jen and Amaura do the same.
Peeko soon hops over to them, surprising the fisherman.
"Awesome. That's it," May says.
"Hi Peeko," Jen says.
The fisherman is impressed, "My stars, I'm certainly impressed, young ladies. Wow!"
"Thank you, but, it's nothing," May says.
Jen then brings out three pellets on a cloth, "Here, try some of this. It's some of our friend Brock's special Pokemon food. Go ahead, Peeko."
"Amaura." (It's delicious.) Amaura says.
Peeko eats one of the pellets and instantly likes it.
"Isn't it yummy?" May says.
"Well, you're one lucky little Wingull, aren't you?" The fisherman says, "The name's Briney. They call me that for me salty disposition, so I hear. Nice to meet you both."
"Nice to meet you," May says, "By the way, Mr. Briney, we'd like to ask you a question."
"Fire away, little ladies," Mr. Briney says.
As the group talks, Team Rocket spies from afar
"There's two of the twerps," Jessie says.
"Then they'll lead us right to Pikachu and Eevee," James says.
"And where dey lead, we will follow," Meowth adds.
Back with the group, they learn from Mr. Briney exactly what they wanted to know
"You do? You really own a boat?" May asks.
"Sure do. You may not believe this, but I used to be a sailor. I could you and all your friends over to Dewford Island in two shakes of a Wingull's tail!" Mr. Briney says.
"That's awesome!" May says.
"Thank you, Mr. Briney," Jen says.
Peeko happily calls and flaps its wings.
"Look! Peeko's liking the idea, too. Sides, I'm the only person left around these parts that still even has a boat," Briney says.
"Really?" Jen replies.
"How come?" May asks.
"Well, they couldn't wait to move over to the new port, but staying here suits me just fine. I once sailed the seven seas as a young sea captain, leaving everyone quaking in my wake as they watched and learned," Mr. Briney says.
"Seven seas, huh?" Jen replies.
"Quake in your wake?" May replies. She then asks, "So, if it's really okay, do you mind if we go get the rest of our friends?"
"Of course. I'll just do a little fishing while I wait," Briney says and points to the house, "That's my house. See it? Over there."
"Okay. Thank you," Jen says.
Then May says to Peeko, "We'll be right back, Peeko. And we'll bring more delicious Pokemon food. Bye."
The two run off, all the while, Team Rocket had heard everything.
"Did you hear dat? He's taking da twerps over to Dewford Island," Meowth says.
"That makes it easy, we lie here in waiting till Pikachu comes and drops into our lap!" James says.
But Jessie says, "Hold on," and has her eyes on Peeko, "I'm somewhat fascinated by that Wingull. Those wings shaped like surfboards, and the look of total cluelessness in it's eyes!"
James: You're right, Jess! That Wingull is tailormade for us, don't you think?" James says.
"Yes, I do think! It's so cute!" Jessie says and gets out her Wurmple and Happiny and cuddles, "Though, nothing could be as cutesy-wootsy as my little Wurmply-poo, and Happiny-weeny."
James and Meowth looks on, baffled.
"So our task is crystal clear!" James says.
"Prepare for trouble cause catching Wingull makes it double! Sound familiar?" Meowth says.
"Woooobbuffet!" (Very much!) Wobbuffet says.
However, unbeknownst to anyone, a man in sunglasses and a blue bandana with crossbones on it comes up from behind.
Meanwhile, May and Jen are leading the others toward Briney's location
"Really? You and Jen were able to find a ride for us?" Mew asks.
"They say, even with the newest ferries, it takes half a day to get there," Brock says.
"And he's an old, retired guy. I'll bet his boat is old, too," Max says.
"Stop worrying, guys. Remember what we said about Mr. Briney?" May.
"Yeah, he traveled the seven seas as a sea captain and left anyone else in his wake," Jen says.
"That's cool," Tomo says.
"And traveled as a ship's captain," Molly adds.
"And just wait till you meet sweet little Peeko," May says and looks down at a jar of Pokemon food as she talks.
However, when they reach Briney's house…
"FORGET IT! I made no such deal with you!" Briney shouts.
"But you did, just a few minutes ago," May says.
"Don't you remember?" Jen adds.
But Brieny says, "I don't know you, I don't know of any deal, so that's all I've got to say, so, good day!" and slams the door.
"But, please, Mr. Briney," May calls out.
"What's with that old guy?" Max wonders.
"I don't know. He was nice a few minutes ago," Jen says.
"That sure doesn't sound like the same guy you were telling us about," Tomo says.
"I know. This doesn't make any sense to me, either," May says.
"I don't know, but he seems upset about something," Jen says.
The group then walks away, Briney closes the curtains inside his house.
"A noteworthy performance," A voice says.
Briney angrily says, "Because there's no reason for putting those young folk in any danger."
"Danger? Whatever do you mean?" The man questions.
But Briney confronts them, "Come on! You're from Team Aqua!"
It's revealed that the man from before was the one who forced Briney to lash out. Not only that, it's also the same spy who attempted to steal from the Devon Corporation the day before
The Aqua Grunt says, "Well well well , guilty as charged."
"I heard plenty of stories from my sailing comrades, about a gang of hoodlums and troublemakers called Team Aqua," Briney says.
"All this name calling is starting to hurt my feelings. You see, we're much more than just common troublemakers. Now how about that boat of yours?" The Aqua Grunt says.
But Briney refuses, "Forget about it!"
"Really? Then I guess you don't care what happens to your little friend here," The Aqua Grunt says.
And reveals that poor Peeko is in a cage.
This upsets Briney, "Why, you...!"
"Crawdaunt, go, now!" The Aqua Grunt says and calls out his Pokemon.
Now Crawdaunt is standing over Peeko.
Briney cries out, "Peeko. No! Alright! Please, stop it!"
"I'll stop when you bring out your boat, old man," The Aqua Grunt says.
As Briney backs down.
Back to Mew and the others, May is sitting on the pier, dejected.
"I don't get it," May says.
"I guess we really don't have much choice anymore but to just walk over to the new port," Mew says.
"If we leave now, we just might make it in time for the afternoon boat," Brock says.
Just then, Officer Jenny runs in on her motorbike.
"Careful kids, this is a dangerous area," Officer Jenny says, but recognizes them, "Wait a minute! You're the people from yesterday!"
"Yes, that's right!" Brock says.
"But, why did you say it's dangerous here?" Tomo asks.
"Is it about that guy from yesterday," Mew asks.
"That's correct," Officer Jenny says, "The member of Team Aqua who broke into the Devon Corporation yesterday has escaped and we got a tip that he might be in this general area. Based on current information I've obtained, several of his colleagues are looking to join up with him, even as we speak."
"You mean the whole rest of that Team Aqua gang? Coming here?" May asks.
"From where? And how soon?" Max asks.
"That, I don't know," Jenny answers.
Then Brock quickly says, "Jenny, please, I know this may not mean much, but I will do anything I can to help you with your manhunt!"
Officer Jenny giggles and says, "Thank you, but you shouldn't do anything dangerous. I set up checkpoints all around the perimeter of Rustboro City, so he won't be escaping easily."
"Right," Everyone agrees.
Even the Pokemon agree.
Then Officer Jenny rides away.
"Bye, Jenny! Good luck!" Brock calls out.
"That Officer Jenny sure has a tough job," May says.
"Yeah, it seems like she's always riding around looking for criminals," Molly says.
Then Max asks, "So don't you think Team Aqua knows what she's doing as well?"
Everyone pauses and considers the possibility.
Then Max says, "I'll betcha they know about the perimeter around Rustboro City just like we do. If that's true, I wonder where those guys are gonna try and meet up."
May thinks and says, "Let me see. If they were around here, you'd think they'd stay out of sight as much as possible."
But Brock says, "Wrong! Now if Team Aqua is coming back for that guy, then they'll need some sort of transportation, do you hear what I'm telling you?"
"Yeah, but having a vehicle around here would make em stand out like a sore thumb!" Max says.
"That is, unless they use a vehicle that can take them out and about unseen," Mew says.
Soon, Brock, Mew, and Max realize, "Of course! That's it!"
"They're gonna need a boat, right?" Brock says.
Jen gasps, "And the only boat around here belongs to Mr. Briney!"
May realizes, "That's right."
"This could be bad!" Brock says.
"Mr. Briney and Peeko are in trouble!" Max says
"You're right. That spy from Team Aqua needs Mr. Briney's boat to meet up with his teammates out in the ocean," Mew says.
Then May says, "So, Mr. Briney was protecting us when he pretended not to know me and Jen!"
"We gotta save Mr. Briney and Peeko!" Jen says.
"And we well," Mew says.
Back at Briney's house, he opens the shutter door of his boathouse and reveals his boat to the Aqua Grunt.
"What's with this old boat? You just better hope it runs," The Aqua Grunt questions.
"What I hope is you realize you're never going to win. Of course, it's not too late to turn yourself into Officer Jenny, you know," Mr. Briney says.
"Thanks for the advice, but holding you and your Wingull captive is all I need," The Aqua Grunt says.
"Don't you dare hurt my little Peeko!" Briney angrily says.
Suddenly, they hear Jen's voice, "Mr. Briney!"
Soon, it reveals that Mew and the others are back.
Jen bangs on the door and calls out, "Mr. Briney!"
"Oh no. I hope we're not too late," May says, worried.
Max then notices, "Look! Isn't that a dock over there? I bet they're there now!"
"Yeah, let's check it out," Mew says.
"Right!" The group says.
With that, everyone rushes over towards the dock, having Briney worried.
The Aqua Grunt chuckles, "Let's go, Crawdaunt."
Crawdaunt agrees and walks away
Briney cries out, "Stay away, everyone! Team Aqua is here!"
Everyone stops when they hear Briney shout.
"Briney!" May calls out.
Soon, the grunt's Crawdaunt soon appears with Peeko in claw.
"Oh, no! It's got Peeko!" May cries out.
"That's the Crawdaunt from yesterday!" Max says.
"Alright, Pikachu, let's go!" Mew says.
"Pika!" (Right!) Pikachu says.
Just then, Crawdaunt's trainer soon comes out with a chuckle.
"It's you all again. You're starting to become an annoyance to me," The Aqua Grunt says.
Everyone is shocked to see that it is the spy from yesterday.
"It is you!" Brock says.
"You're right, it's the same spy from the Devon Corporation building!" Mew says.
"Unlikely. Go, Crawdaunt," Aqua Grunt calls out.
Crawdaunt steps forward.
"Let's go, Pikachu!" Mew says.
Pikachu leaps into action and runs alongside Operetta, but a couple of smoke bombs suddenly drop.
"What's going on?!" The Aqua Grunt cries out.
And soon, they hear the Team Rocket motto.
Jessie:
Prepare for trouble with a smoky silhouette!
James:
Make it double cause you ain't seen nothing yet!
Jessie:
To protect the world from devastation.
James:
To unite the people within our nation.
Jessie:
To denounce the evils of truth and love.
James:
To extend our reach to the stars above.
Jessie:
Jessie!
James:
James!
Jessie:
Team Rocket smokes you out at the speed of light!
James:
Surrender now or prepare to fight, fight, fight!
Meowth:
Dat's right!
Wobbuffet:
Woooobbuffet! (End of scene!)
"Team Rocket?! What're you doing here?!" Tomo demands.
"Always with the same question. We're here for Pikachu and Eevee, but we're taking Wingull, too!" Jessie says.
Briney is shocked to hear it, "What?! Oh, no, you won't!"
The Aqua Grunt just chuckles
Jessie notices the Aqua Grunt, "Oh, so it's you again."
"Alright, so yesterday was a bust," James says.
"But dis go-round, we're gonna grab every Pokémon possible!" Meowth says.
"Really? Well, I have my doubts," The Aqua Grunt says.
"Oh, yeah? Well doubt dis!" Meowth says.
With the press of a button, a giant vacuum activates and starts pulling in Pikachu and Eevee in
"Pikachu! Eevee!" Mew cries out.
Crawdaunt anchors themselves to the ground, but Peeko ends up getting pulled in.
"Peeko!" Briney cries out.
Brock then calls out, "Lotad, let's go!"
And Lotad comes out
Brock then calls out, "Water Gun, now!"
Team Rocket panics, but Lotad fires it weakly
Team Rocket mocks it, "Nice try, for a little squirt!"
This angers Lotad and launches Water Gun with full force. That causes them to drop the remote and its short basket opens, dropping Pikachu, Eevee, and Peeko. While Peeko lands on the dock, Pikachu and Eevee land in the water.
"Da trap door!" Meowth cries out.
"Who's idea was that?!" James cries out.
Soon, Briney rushes over, "I gotcha, Peeko!"
However, Crawdaunt gets to Peeko first after Pikachu and Eevee manage to get out of the water.
"Oh no, Peeko!" May cries out.
Aqua Grunt then says, "Crawdaunt, Bubble Beam, now and blow that blasted balloon away!"
Right on cue, as Crawdaunt fires its attack and destroys the balloon, sending Team Rocket flying.
"Team Rocket's blasting off again!" Team Rocket cries out.
In all the confusion, the Aqua Grunt and Crawdaunt made their escape toward the boat with Peeko.
"Stop!" Brieny calls out.
The drawbridge suddenly went up, allowing the boat to leave the boathouse and speed off.
"Come back! You can't take Peeko away!" May cries out.
Brock: I'm sure he's on his way to meet his buddies!
"Let's go follow him, now!" Tomo says.
"How do we do that? We don't have a boat, remember?" Max asks.
"We gotta figure out a way!" Mew says.
But Briney says, "Alright, then. Looks like, I'm left with no other choice," The turns to the group, "Okay, everyone, come with me."
Everyone follows Briney as he pulls a lever, turning on the lights in the boathouse as the water drains away to reveal, to everyone's shock, a Wingull shaped craft.
"Say hello to my super high speed boat, the S.S. Wingull!" Briney says.
"Okay, THAT's a ship!" Brock says.
"It's a Wingull!" Jen says.
"Ha! We'll show Team Aqua a thing or three!" Briney says.
Everyone hops into the ship. Briney starts to have the engines fire up and the S.S. Wingull heads out to sea.
Then Briney explains, ""After retiring from the sea captain's life, my days became boring, one after another. And the thrill of the seven seas drifted into the dark past, into a sad and lonely life. And then one day…"
As Briney talks, he remembers the day he met Peeko.
Briney says, "My dear Peeko suddenly appeared out of nowhere. Watching that Wingull as it lived freely, flying through the skies, I felt the unmistakable power of my youth welling up inside of me again!"
The flashback ends
"Then, I knew that the time had come for me to travel the oceans once more, this time with my Peeko, so I built this boat!" Brieny says.
Elsewhere, out on the sea, far ahead of the gang, the Aqua Grunt continues to speed along.
"Okay, we're close to the rendezvous point," Aqua Grunt says.
Crawdaunt soon spots something.
Aqua Grunt notices, "Crawdaunt? What?"
The grunt looks back and sees the S.S. Wingull and the others on the water speeding towards them.
"Where'd that boat come from?!" The Aqua Grunt says.
Briney calls out, "Team Aqua, give Peeko back to me, now! The ocean ties the world together, you'll never get away from me!"
"Oh, please, spare me the dramatics!" The Aqua Grunt says, not giving a care.
The boat speeds up.
"He's picking up speed!" Molly says.
"And heading straight for Triangle Rock!" Brieny says.
"I'll bet that's where he's gonna meet up with the rest of his team members!" Brock says.
"You're right. Come on, Pikachu! Eevee!" Mew says.
Pikachu and Eevee agree.
"Ashley, wait!" Mew calls out.
Mew climbs up onto the roof of the boat, "Okay, Crawdaunt's part water Pokemon, so let's fight it by using lightning!"
Pikachu and Eevee charge an attack, however…
"Water Pulse!" Aqua Grunt calls out.
Crawdaunt launches the attack, causing the water to surge towards the S.S. Wingull, but Briney evades in time by going hard to port, forcing everyone on the boat to hang on.
Aqua Grunt calls out, "Follow up with Bubble Beam!"
The attack fires and hits the water, creating a massive wave that comes down on the ship. The wave soon dissipates.
"They're almost to Triangle Rock!" Tomo cries out.
Briney spots a worried and frightened Peeko.
"Peeko!" Briney calls out.
"He's not slowing down!" Jen cries out.
"You're right! He's going way too fast! He's gonna crash!" Brock cries out.
Then Mew calls out, "Pikachu! Eevee! Use Thunder!"
Both Pikachu and Eevee fire and the attack hits Triangle Rock, destroying the top half of it, but the boat continues on.
"There's still a lot left of it!" May panic.
"Alright, then! Hold on tight, mateys!" Briney says.
Briney floors it and heads right for the boat's starboard side.
"Look out! We're toast!" Max cries out.
"Peeko!"" May calls out.
But Briney reassures, "We're fine! Just watch!"
Briney positions the ship just enough to make the port side a ramp for the other ship to jump off of.
"Oh, yeah!" Britney cheers.
The boat flies right over the partly destroyed Triangle Rock before crashing into the water on the other side
"Peeko!" Brieny calls out and dives in.
"Peeko!" May calls out.
"Peeko!" Jen calls out.
Briney swims up to his cage friend, "Tell me you're okay!"
Peeko happily confirms.
"What a relief!" Brieny says, relieved to have his friend back.
Suddenly, something surfaces from the water, a submarine commissioned. It's blue and it has the same symbol as the one on the Grunt's bandana.
"What's that!" Tomo asks.
"A giant submarine!" Max says.
"It must be Team Aqua!" Brock says.
Then May notices. "Look! Up there!"
They spot the grunt and his Crawdaunt standing on top of the sub before climbing down the hatch.
"He did escape after all!" May says.
The sub proceeds to dive into the sea.
"You haven't seen the last of me, Team Aqua. That, I vow!" Briney says.
"Team Aqua, just who are those guys anyway?" Mew says.
Later that night, Mew and the others are at Briney's abode, where May is feeding Peeko.
"Whoa!" Max says, surprised.
"I guess it was hungry," Molly says.
"Well, after going through all of that, wouldn't you be, too?" May says.
Everyone's stomachs soon rumble.
Briney laughs, "That answers your question, May. Peeko's not the only hungry one."
"Oh, yeah, I haven't eaten anything since this morning," Max says.
"None of us have," Molly says.
May then says, "I know, and I was really hoping to try some of that Rustboro pasta."
"You referring to Rustboro City Pasta? The restaurant you passed by on the way here?" Brieny asks.
"Yes, that one," May says.
"Do you know it?" Brock asks.
"Know it? You bet I do. My best friend ran that place for years!" Briney says.
Everyone is surprised by the revelation.
"Tell you what, I'll just give him a call and ask him to whip up some pasta for us all!" Brieny says.
Everyone is thrilled by the idea.
Then Brieny says, "And after a good night's sleep, we'll head for Dewford Island first thing in the morning!"
"Thank you, Mr. Briney!" Everyone happily says.
The next day soon comes and our heroes are seen heading for Dewford Island.
After the safe return of Mr. Briney's beloved Wingull, Mew and her friends boarded his ship, leaving Rustboro City in their wake. Now they've set a course for Dewford Island and the second gym in the Hoenn region.
