Episode 54: Game Winning Assist!
What starts out continuing their journey to Lavaridge Town for Mew's Gym battle through a tunnel called Fiery Path, it ends up with Mew and the gang being chased by Slugma. The group scream and panic as they run away from the group of Slugma.
Max cries out, "None of this would've happened if you hadn't let your Skitty out, May!"
"I can't help it if it decides to let itself out on its own and decides to attack some Slugma!" May cries out.
"Less talking, more running!" Tomo panics.
Suddenly, two Slugma fire Flamethrowers at them.
"We got to find a way out of here!" Brock cries out.
"Yeah, but where?!" Molly asks.
Soon, Mew, Pikachu, and Eevee spot light up ahead.
"Look you guys! I think that crack in the wall is just what we need!" Mew says.
Then calls out, "Pikachu, Eevee, use Iron Tail on that wall!"
Pikachu and Eevee do just that, destroying the wall and creating a way out. Mew and the others soon take their chance to escape.
"Later, Slugma!" Mew says.
"Much later!" Everyone calls out.
The Slugma come to a halt
"We're outta here!" Max says.
The group end up tumbling down the hill, and soon land at the bottom.
"Ow. Who was it that chose that route?" Max asks.
"Beats me," Jen says.
Brock asks, "Everybody still in one piece?"
"We're okay," Molly says.
"That was a close one," Mew says.
"Pika, Pika." (Yeah, no kidding.) Pikachu says.
Meloetta sighs, "Loett," (Way too close.)
"Too close. I thought we were goners," Mays ays.
Skitty soon wanders off.
"Skitty, where are you going?" May calls out.
Skitty approaches a sleeping Numel, a yellow, quadrupedal Pokémon that resembles a Dromedary camel with a volcano-like hump on its back. The hump is green at the very top and fades out into yellow with small green spots. It has bangs on top of its head, sleepy eyes with brown circles around them, and short, stubby legs.
Skitty soon examines it.
"Skitty?" May questions.
"It's a Numel," Mew says and brings out her Pokedex.
Dextette says, "Numel, the Numb Pokémon. A Fire and Ground Type. Numel is so complacent it doesn't even notice when it is struck. This Pokémon's body is filled with hot magma, which, when cooled in water, further slows its movement. Numel is also unable to bear hunger."
Skitty tries ramming into its head, but knocks itself back.
May scolds Skitty, "Stop it, Skitty! That's what got you and us in trouble with the Slugma! So, knock it off!"
But Skitty doesn't listen and tries using Double Slap on it before tiring.
May shrugs and calls it back, "Skitty, return," soon Skitty is returned to the Pokeball, "Sometimes I think it has too much energy for its own good."
"And look, after all of Skitty's attack and playing, Numel isn't waking up," Jen says.
"It's numb Pokemon after all," Mew says.
The Numel soon wakes up and shoots a stream of air from its humped back.
"So, you think it took this long for it to realize it was just attacked?" Max asks.
However, the Numel walks in another direction before heading to a nearby tree to grab a bite to eat.
"Oh, it just woke up cause it's hungry," Tomo says.
Suddenly, a Furret arrives on the scene.
"Hey, it's a Furret!" Max says.
"What's it doing here?" Molly asks.
Soon, they hear a voice, "Numel?!"
They see a young lady arrive with three more Numel.
"So, there you are, Numel," The girl calls out, "I've been looking everywhere for you."
The young woman has light purple hair and red eyes. She is wearing a black shirt, red and pink overalls, and a blue headwrap. Of course, Brock is awestruck.
The woman notices them and says, "Say, I don't think I've met any of you before. My name's Julie. A pleasure to meet you all. My Numel and I live out here on my ranch."
"Hi, I'm Ashley from Pallet Town," Mew says.
Pikachu and Eevee introduce themselves.
"And my name's May," May says.
"Hi there. I'm Max, May's little brother," Max says.
"I'm Tomo," Tomo says.
"I'm Jen," Jen says.
"And I'm Molly," Molly says.
And Brock says, "And last but not least, my name is Brock."
"Nice to meet you," Julie says.
Brock then takes Julie's hands, "The pleasure is all mine. Speaking of pleasure, I'd like to request the pleasure of your company for a small yet cozy lunch."
"What?" Julie responds, confused.
Numel shoots hot steam from its back.
That makes Brock panic, "Oh, that's hot! Oh, that's hot!"
"Sorry about that, Brock," Julie apologizes.
Numel soon runs towards another tree.
"Stop, Numel!" Julie cries out, "Furret, stop Numel, now!"
Furret does so before Numel returns to its herd.
"Awesome," Tomo says.
"It's so cool that Numel oby Furret back there," Mew says.
"Every once in a while, a Numel gets separated from the herd and they get lost easily. So, whenever that happens, I can depend on my Furret to help me out," Julie says.
Then turns to Numel, "Numel, how about we head home? I'll give you some delicious berries. What do you say?"
Numel agrees.
Julie then turns to the group, "Now, I bet you all were making your way through Fiery Path and ended up out here, right?"
"We were, but we ended up getting chased here," Mew says.
"I see. But you're all on your way to Lavaridge Town, right?" Julie replies.
"Yeah, you're right," Brock says.
"But how'd you know where we're going?" Jen asks.
"Because I see travelers going down Fiery Path all the time when they head for Lavaridge Town," Julie says, "And just like you folks, they're usually chased out by Slugma before they arrive at my ranch. Say, how about you all take a break at my place? My home is nearby."
"Wow, Rally?" May says.
"That's nice of you Julie," Mew says.
Later, the group arrives at Julie's home.
"Well, there it is," Julie says. Then turns to the group, "You know, you all have a rough journey ahead of you crossing Mt. Chimney. Say, how about you all stay overnight? I'll make you all a home cooked meal."
But then Brock says, "Oh no, I insist that you leave the cooking to me."
"Uh?" Julie replies.
But Max says, "Not a bad idea. Brock's an awesome chef."
"He sure is," May says.
"Then you're both in charge of dinner tonight, Brock," Julie says.
"An excellent choice! One you won't regret!" Brock says.
A bit later, the gang help bring the Numel herd back into their corral, unaware that Team Rocket was watching from nearby
"Wow. It's a Numel roundup. Who would've thought following those twerps around would lead us to this treasure trove of unusual Pokémon?" Meowth says.
"I don't see any treasure," Jessie says.
But James says, "Meowth is right. With all that internal magma in their humps, Numel can be used instead of ovens and heaters."
"Internal magma? What does that mean?" Jessie asks.
"It means, they're living miniature volcanoes. Seeing that herd takes me back to my youth," James says.
James has a flashback to when he was a boy, sleeping in his bed while a couple Numel surrounded it and letting off hot steam.
"I slept as snug as a bug Pokémon in a rug every winter at my grandparents' home with some Numel keeping me toasty warm," James says.
Flashback ends
Jessie smiles, "If they're that great, let's catch all of those Numel and sell them to the losers that are freezing in the colder climates up north and then, we'll be rich! Now, let's get on the stick and catch that herd, quick!"
"Slick," The boys agree.
"Woobbuffet!" (Let's do it!) Wobbuffet agrees.
Soon, Julie feeds one of her Numel the berries she promised.
"Here you go, eat as much as you like," Julie says.
Soon, Brock, Tomo and Max come running up, "Julie! Can we help out, please?"
"Oh, I'm alright, but thanks," Julie says.
"Oh come on. We want to find out what it's like to live and work on a real Numel Ranch," Max says.
"Can we, please?" Tomo asks.
"Well, I doný see why not," Julie says.
Both Tomo and Max take a brush and brush a Numel.
Then Brock says, "Why not let me take the load off of you and help feed the herd?"
"Alright, if you insist," Julie says.
Then Brock gives Numel some berries, "Here, how about you have some berries, Numel?"
Numel happily eats before letting off some steam, startling Brock.
Meanwhile, May was giving Mew a surprising proposition. Jen and Molly are also surprised.
"Really? You want to battle now?" Mew asks.
"Well, you know how my Skitty loves to fight, so maybe I should let it try some real battling," May says.
"You do have a good point," Jen says.
"I think it's a good idea. We accept." Mew says.
Suddenly, Julie comes over, "May, how about battling us? It's been a pretty long time, but we've been itching for a battle."
Furret agrees.
Soon both trainers are set and ready.
"We're all set and ready to go!" May says.
"Then let's get it started!" Julie says.
May then calls out, "Go, Skitty, I choose you!"
Skitty comes out.
"Kay, Furret, you ready?" Julie says.
"Furret!" (Ready!) Furret says.
"Okay, Skitty, this is your first real battle, so watch your opponent's moves closely," May says.
However, Skitty just runs forward, to May's shock.
"Alright, Furret, go!" Jullie calls out.
Furret charges in but then starts running in a circle with Skitty chasing its tail.
"calls out, "Skitty, remember what I said! Watch your opponent's movements!"
Then Julie calls out, "Furret, stop in your tracks!"
Furret comes to a stop, while Skitty runs into its tail and gets knocked back.
"Hang in there, Skitty!" Mew calls out.
Skitty struggles to its feet.
Julie calls out, "May, you've got to fight back!"
"I am!" May says and calls out, "Skitty, use Tackle attack!"
Skitty charges in for the attack.
Julie then calls out, "Furret, dodge, now!"
Furret evades right on the money.
Then May calls out, "Okay, Skitty, use Double Slap!"
Skitty tries to land a blow, but Furret continues to evade until Skitty starts to show signs of exhaustion.
"I can't believe Furret dodged every strike! What am I gonna do now?" May cries out.
Then Julie says, "Listen May, now is the time to use your Pokedex."
"Use my Pokedex?" Mew says, confused, and realizes, "That's it! I can just look it up," She then gets out her Pokedex and looks up Skitty's attacks, "Let's see, Skitty's attacks are... Got it!" Then calls out, "Skitty, use Assist!"
"Assist, huh. Didn't think Skitty was able to learn it this soon," Mew replies. then says in thought, "Then again, my Skitty learned how to use it quickly."
Skitty leaps, creates a glowing sphere of energy in its front right paw and then forcefully points it at Furret before an Ember attack shoots out of it.
"No way! Isn't that Ember?!" May says, surprised.
Jullie calls out, "Quick, dodge it, Furret!"
Furret leaps up and evades it in time
May then calls out, "Skitty, let's use Assist one more time! Go!"
Skitty does the attack again, this time what's released is a Silver Wind.
However, Furret manages to evade.
"What?! How can Furret dodge that, too?!" May panic.
Julie then calls out, "Okay, Furret, use Slam!"
Furret smacks Skitty with its tail, hard enough to send it tumbling back to May.
"My Skitty!" May cries out and runs over.
"Is it alright?" Jen asks.
"Yeah, it's going to be okay, but I think we probably need a rest,"May says.
Then Julie says, "May, we'll end the battle here."
Thanks, Julie, that was a great idea," May says.
Then looks at Skitty, "But that was quite a surprise, I had no idea Assist could let Skitty use Ember or Silver Wind."
"That's what Assist is about," Mew says.
"What do you mean?" May asks.
Then Julie says, "It's like this; Assist allows the Pokémon in battle to use attacks from other Pokémon its trainer has, even when they aren't involved in the battle. Get it?"
"Any of my Pokémon?" May asks.
"That's right," Mew says, "Assist allowed Skitty to use Ember Attack which is from Torchic, and Silver Wind from Beautifly."
"Exactly," Julie says.
"Wow! Guess that Assist could come in handy," May says.
Skitty meows in agreement.
"Maybe, but keep in mind that Assist is random, so you never know which attack it's going to use," Mew says.
"I'll remember," May says.
Later that night, the Pokemon are eating the Pokeblocks Julie made.
"They sure love this Pokéblock, Julie," Tomo says.
Mew then asks, "Did you make it yourself?"
"Uh huh," Julie answers, "There are all kinds of delicious berries growing around Mt. Chimney that I often use."
"How did you learn to make Pokéblock?" Molly asks.
"Believe it or not, I used to be a Pokémon Coordinator," Julie says.
The group present was surprised.
"You used to compete in Pokémon Contests?" Mew asks.
"I have no idea," May says.
"You know, I'm impressed with that Skitty of yours, May," Julie says.
"Yeah?" May asks.
"Its speed and attacks were both right on the button. With enough practice, it'll be tough to beat in Contest Battles," Julie says.
"You mean it?" May asks before turning to her Skitty, "You hear that, Skitty?"
Skitty meows in agreement.
Soon, Max walks in, "Okay, dinner's ready, everyone!"
They enter the dining room and find a banquet waiting.
"Woah. Incredible," Julie says, amazed.
"I'll admit, I pulled out all the stops on this one," Brock says.
"And I helped out, too. Just wait till you taste it," Max says.
Julie sits down, "Alright, then, let's eat!"
"Sounds good to me," Mew says.
Everyone agrees.
Later, outside in the night under the full moon's light, Team Rocket was approaching in a Numel shaped robot.
"Good, da herd is fast asleep," Meowth says.
"It's a thief's dream come true!" James says.
"And we're the ranch owner's nightmare!" Jessie says.
Wobbuffet also says, "Wobbuuu Wobbu!" (Then let's do it!)
Two mechanical arms come out of the hump of the Numel robot and put all the real Numel inside the hump.
Inside, everyone was fast asleep until Furret heard the whirring of the robot's mechanical arms before looking outside and seeing what was going on, waking Julie in the process.
"What's wrong, Furret?" Julie asks.
In the guest room, Mew and the others are sleeping, but Pikachu and Eevee also hear the whirring.
Pikachu cries out, "Pika Pi!" (Ash!)
"What is it, Pikachu?" Mew asks, drowsy.
Soon, everyone else in the room wakes up.
"What's going on?" Max asks.
"Who woke me up?" May asks.
"What's all that noise?" Jen asks.
Pikachu leaps on the dresses and points out the window, "Pika, Pika!" (It's out there!)
"Out there?" Mew asks.
They soon spot Team Rocket in the middle of their heist.
"Someone's stealing the Numel!" May cries out.
"Come on, let's go!" Mew says.
Suddenly, Skitty materializes on its own before, in no time, everyone rushes out of the house
"My Numel!" Julie cries out.
They soon come to a halt on a hill overlooking the corral.
"Hey, what's going on here!" Julie demands.
And with that, the Team Rocket motto comes out.
Jessie:
Prepare for trouble from out Numel-mobile!
James:
And make it double because it's all too real!
Jessie:
To protect the world from devastation.
James:
To unite all peoples within our nation.
Jessie:
To denounce the evils of truth and love.
James:
To extend our reach to the stars above.
Jessie:
It's Jessie.
James:
And don't forget James.
Jessie:
Team Rocket, landing clean at the speed of light!
James:
Surrender now, or prepare to fight, fight, fight!
Meowth:
Meowth! Yep, that's right!
Wobbuffet:
Woooobbu! (Aaaand cut!)
"It's Team Rocket again!" Mew angrily says.
And Julie demands, "What do you think you're doing with my Numel herd?!"
"What don't think, we know what we're doing! We're stealing it!" Jessie says.
"These Numel will bring a bit of warmth to the folks up north and a big bulge in our thin wallets," James says.
"Well, here's something that'll warm your robot up!" Mew says. Then calls out, "Pikachu, Eevee, Thunderbolt!"
They both hit the attack, but does little damage
"Oh no!" Mew cries out, "They electric proof it."
Meowth laughs, "Got that right, twerpette! That alloy makes our Numel-mobile as clueless to direct attacks as da real ting!"
"Now it's time for us to fly!" James says.
"Goodbye!" Jessie says, and blows a kiss.
"Wobbuffet! (Let's beat it!) Wobbuffet says.
"Better move if you don't want to be trampled!" Jessie says.
As Jessie talks, the robot charges their way.
"Look out, here they come!" Molly cries out.
"Right at us!" Brock adds.
Suddenly, Skitty darts forward.
"Skitty, come back!" May cries out and runs after it.
"May watch out!" Max cries out.
"Be careful!" Mew calls out.
"Skitty, come back here, now!" May cries out and leaps forward and grabs it, only for her to grab onto one of the mechanical arms before the robot springs itself forward and over Mew, the others, and Julie with both arms.
Upon landing, the mechanical arms retract back into the hump and the hatch closes.
Team Rocket cheers, "Giant promotions! Corner offices! Executive bunches! Yay!"
"Oh no!" Molly cries out.
"I don't believe it!" Tomo says, shocked.
"Team Rocket has both my sister and Skitty!" Max panics.
"Don't worry, Max, we're going to save them," Brock says.
"He's right. They won't get far, I promise," Mew says.
Suddenly, a pickup truck pulls up with Julie in the driver's seat.
"Guys, get in, quick!" Julie says.
Everyone soon climbs into the trunk of the truck and Julie drives off.
"Hang on, May. Skitty. And don't worry, we're on our way to save you," Mew says.
Inside the Numel-mobile, May and Skitty were trying to wake up the Numel herd.
May: Come on, Numel, please! You've got to wake up!" May says, trying to wake Numel up.
But it was no use
"I've got to figure out a way to get us out of here," May says.
But then May has an idea, "Skitty, try using Tackle on the wall!"
Skitty does so, but to no avail. However, it accidently hits the head of one of the Numel, waking it before it proceeds to wake up the rest of the herd.
In the cockpit, Team Rocket is unaware of what's going on in the hump.
"Ah yes, the life we've always dreamt of. We're on our way to easy street," Meowth says.
"Yes, and I heard, they have all the flavors of ice cream you can want on every corner," James says.
And Meowth says, "Yep. As soon as we get here, I'm orderin a double cheeseburger, monster sized fries with a huge chocolate shake, and pokemint ice cream for dessert!" Meowth says.
But then Jessie says, "No no no no. Come on, you're not thinking big enough."
"Oh? What do your dreams include?" James asks.
And Jessie answers, "Okay. For starters, I'll build my summer dream home on some tropical island where I'll eat whatever I want wherever I want. 24/7, straight off the barbeque."
That has the guys interested, "That sounds good, can you include us in your dream?"
However, their attention is soon diverted by the sounds of the Numel herd banging against the wall of the hump, all except one, that is.
"Come on, Numel, please wake up. We've got to hurry and get out of here, now!" May says.
Back in the cockpit.
"It sounds like our Numel herd isn't napping anymore," Jessie says.
"Well, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Those Numel are as fast as grass when it's growing," James says.
"But just in case, we better cool them off," Meowth says.
With the press of a button, an overhead sprinkler system soaks the Numel herd, cooling their inner magma.
May sees it, "Oh, no. The water is cooling the magma inside of them."
However, the last Numel wakes up as soon as the water drenches it
"Numel, you're waking up!" May says.
Meanwhile, the gang are still following Team Rocket's robot tracks.
"Can't this truck go any faster?" Max asks.
"It can, but you better hold on," Julie says.
Julie promptly speeds up, leaving the others riding on a Pokémon behind.
Back inside the hump of the Numel-mobile, the herd had gone back to sleep, save for one.
"Alright, Numel, is there something you can do to get us out?" May asks.
"Numel confirms and starts ramming against the wall.
"Good start, keep it up." May cheers.
Skitty meows in agreement, but Numel quickly tires out.
"I guess these walls are just too strong," May says.
Skitty tries to wake Numel up, giving May an idea
"That's it! Skitty can use Assist to pull off Ember Attack!" May says.
She then calls out, "Okay, Skitty, use Assist!"
Skitty does so, but launches a Gust instead.
"No, that was a Gust attack. Mew is right, Assist is good, but also random," May says.
Then calls out, "Try it one more time!"
Skitty does so, firing an Ember attack that quickly heats up Numel to the point where it lets off some steam
"You did it!" May cheers.
Numel suddenly launches a Flamethrower at the rest of its herd, waking them up and prompting them to fire Flamethrowers alongside it, heating up the walls around them.
"It's working, Skitty!" May says.
As Skitty meows in agreement, in the cockpit, Team Rocket notice the increase in temperature.
"Hey, who turned up the heat?" James asks.
"It is getting a bit toasty in here," Meowth says.
"Well, it wasn't me," Jessie says.
"Wobbuffet!" (Getting hot!) Wobbuffet panic.
Jessie turns to Meowth, "Was it too much to ask to put an air conditioner into this machine, Meowth?"
"Hey, I'm busy trying to manage everything else wit dis scheme. But if its da Numel getting warmed up, I'll put a damper on it," Meowth says.
With the press of a button, the sprinklers go off, halting the Flamethrowers.
"We got to stop that sprinkler!" May says.
And calls out, "Skitty, use Double Slap!"
Skitty does so, halting the water and allowing the Flamethrowers to penetrate through the walls and further heating up the inside of the robot.
"What happened?! Didn't you push the sprinkler button, Meowth?!" Jessie panics." Meowth says.
"I know I did!
Soon, the controls start setting alight along with other parts of the cockpit.
"Maybe we should've added a panic button!" James suggests.
Team Rocket cries out, "Fire!"
"Wobbuffet!" (We're burning!) Wobbuffet panics.
Soon, the Numel-mobile falls on its side before the head breaks off. Soon after, the hump hatch opens.
"Quick, Numel, let's get out of here!" May says.
May and the Numel herd quickly run from the burning robot.
"Did everyone make it out okay?" May asks.
The Numel herd confirms before Team Rocket walks out of the wreck and sees that they had.
"That twerpy girl and her Skitty?!" Jessie exclaims.
Soon, Meowth says, "And who invited them anyway onboard anyways! That really burns me up!"
"Well, I say, what goes around, comes around!" James says.
"Team Rocket!" Mew cries out.
Soon, Mew and the rest of the group arrive.
"More twerps?!" Jessie exclaims.
Once Julie stops, everyone climbs out of the car.
May says, "Max!"
"May, you're okay!" Max says.
Julie gets out of the truck, "My Numel herd! Are you all okay?"
Soon, rancher and Pokémon are reunited
Julie happily says, "My sweet Numel.
"Enough! Prepare for battle!" Jessie says.
"That's right! We happen to need those Numel!" James says.
"Otherwise we ain't never getting to easy street!" Meowth adds.
Jessie calls out, "Seviper, let's go!"
James does the same, "You, too, Cacnea!"
Both Pokemon come out, but Cacnea tries to hug James instead.
"Cacnea, do you know how much of a pain in the neck your constant hugging is?!" James panics.
Jessie calls out, "Seviper, use Poison Tail on that Furret!"
Seviper tries, but misses
"Furret, strike back with Slam!" Julie calls out.
Furret does so and knocks Seviper out.
"Oh, no! My poor Seviper!" Jessie panics.
James then calls out, "Cacnea, Needle Arm Attack!"
Cacnea leaps in with the attack ready to strike.
"Pikachu, Thunderbolt, go!" Mew calls out.
Pikachu launches the attack and lands while also forcing Cacnea right into his teammates, sending Team Rocket flying.
James cries out, "All of my ice cream sodas!
Änd my double cheeseburger!" Merowth says.
"And most of all my dreams of living on a tropical island!" Jessie cries out.
"It all went up in smoke!" Team Rocket cries out, "And now we're blasting off again!"
"Alright Pikachu," Mew says.
Julie claps, "That was incredible! Bravo!"
"Furret! Furret!" (Encore! Encore!) Furret says.
"Well, Ashley, after that workout, your gym battle will be a piece of cake," Max says.
One of the Numel suddenly runs for the nearest tree to grab a bite to eat.
"Numel, where are you going?" May asks.
Numel eats one of the berries quickly.
"Oh, I see! It must've been hungry after all the excitement," Julie says.
Numel happily eats another berry, the next morning…
"Thanks again for your help last night. Without all of you, I never would've gotten my Numel herd back," Julie says.
"Well, we're the ones who should take you for being nice," Mew says.
Then Julie says, "Now, do you see that path over there?" and points to it. "When you reach that really tall tree, you'll arrive at the Ropeway Station. Use it to cross over Mt. Chimney. And then go to Lavaridge Town."
"Okay. Thank you, Julie," Mew says.
"Thanks again for everything," May says.
"You're welco…" Julie replies.
"But interrupted by Brock, taking Julie's hand, "Julie, I hope you know that deep down in my heart, I'll always have the wish that you and I will cross paths once more!"
Brock is quickly dragged away by Max.
"How about we cross this path instead?" May says.
Julie giggles in response.
Soon, Mew and the others say their farewells to Julie and Furret.
Thanks to an unexpected Assist attack from Skitty. May and her little Pokémon were able to save the day! And now, having gotten directions to Lavaridge Town where Mew's next Gym battle awaits, the group continues their journey and heads toward Mt. Chimney.
