Episode 62: All Torkoal, No Play

One day, Mew and the others are walking along the path.

Brock says, "So, by going this way, we'll hit Mauville City before Petalburg."

"And that's okay. I've been wanting to go back and see how Watt and Wattson are doing," Mew says.

"Plus, you mentioned that you'd battle against his Electrike once it grew a little more, remember?" May replies.

"Yep," Mew says.

Suddenly, the group found themselves out of the woods and facing a large valley.

"This definitely isn't Mauville City," Jen says.

"Well, I don't see any city at all," Max says.

"I don't get it, I was sure this was the way," Brock says.

May drops to her knees, "I knew that taking all of your shortcuts was a bad idea."

May then questions, "What is it about guys and their refusal to ask for directions?"

Zinnia then notices, "Hey! Look up there!"

The group looks up to see a Skarmory flying down towards two Magnemite that were using their electrical power to attack and hold a Torkoal off the ground.

"That's a Skarmary," Max says.

"And Two Magnemite!" Jen adds.

"Why are they attacking that Torkoal?" Mew asks.

The Torkoal tries to fight back with Flamethrower, but to no avail as the Skarmory dodges the oncoming attack and fires a Swift attack

"Don't worry, Torkoal, Pikachu, Eevee, and I are gonna help you out!" Mew says.

"Pika!" (Sure are!) Pikachu says.

"Eevee!" (Hang in there!) Mew calls out.

Torkoal continues to scream in pain.

The Magnemite finally let Torkoal go as it freefalls to the ground below.

"We're coming!" Mew calls out.

"Pika!" (Hold on!) Pikachu calls out.

Suddenly, the two Magnemite go on the attack.

"Watch out!" Brock and Zinnia cry out.

"Look out!" Max, May, and Molly cry out.

Mew dodges the attack, but comes to a halt and falls backwards while the Torkoal lands with a thud. Mew tries to get up and help it, but the Magnemite prevents her from helping.

Mew then calls out, "Alright, Pikachu, give em a Thunderbolt of your own!"

Pikachu fires the attack, but misses before the Magnemite retaliates.

"Why are those Magnemite attacking Mew like that?" Max asks.

The Skarmory calls out, signaling the Magnemite to retreat with it.

Mew sighs, "What was that all about?

But Mew's attention was diverted to Torkoal, who was on its back.

"Hang on, Torkoal. We'll flip you over," Mew says.

Mew and the others help, "Push," Torkoal right side up.

In moments, Torkoal is right-side up again.

Mew asks, "You okay, Torkoal?"

Soon, Torkoal cries in tears and says, "Torkoal, Torkoal, Torkoal! (Thank you!Thank you! Thank you! ) and snorts smoke from its nostrils and spreads it to everyone.

Mew giggles, "Guess that's Torkoal's way of saying thank you."

Suddenly, as Pikachu and Eevee shake the soot off his face, a noise draws their attention.

"What was that?" May asks.

The Torkoal inexplicably runs off.

"Where are you going?! Stop!" Mew calls out.

But Torkoal doesn't listen and keeps running.

"Torkoal's gone," Mew says.

"Something strange is going on here," Brock says.

"No kidding," May says.

Meanwhile, Team Rocket's balloon was flying high above the valley.

"Have either of you spotted the twerps yet?" Jessie asks.

"No, nothing yet," James answers.

"Not unless they disguise demselves as rocks," Meowth says.

Soon, James spots something to his right, "There's a Skarmory approaching."

Jessie and Meowth see it, too.

"Alright, what's it saying?" Jessie asks.

Meowth translates, "It's saying 'get outta here or else'."

The Skarmory zooms past the balloon close enough to make a rip to make it go out of control and lose hot air.

Team Rocket cries out, "We're blasting off already?!"

Meanwhile, Mew and her friends have stopped for a rest.

"First up the mountain, then down the mountain. When are we ever gonna reach a real road?" May complains.

"That's what I'd like to know," Jen says.

"Yeah, but it's best if we go through the valley. It's better to go through it than around it," Mew says.

"Okay, then, fine. But with whose directions?" May asks, sarcastically and sits on a rock.

"I can appreciate your sarcasm, but this time, I happen to know we're going in the right direction.

"Well that will be a nice change of pace," Max says.

Just then, Eevee cries out, "Eevee!" (Look out!)

"Look out for what?" Mew asks.

Everyone looks and sees what Eevee is seeing.

"It's the Magnemite!" May cries out.

"They're back!" Molly cries out.

Two Thunderbolts from them send the group running for cover

"If it's a fight they want, we'll give em one," Mew says. Then calls out, "Pikachu! Eevee! Thunderbolt!"

Both Piakchu and Eevee use Thunderbolt, but they both miss. That causes the Magnemite to retaliate.

"What did we do to make those Magnemite so mad at us?" May asks.

"I don't know," Brock says.

"If we don't do something we're going to get fried," Zinnia says.

Then Max has an idea, "I know! May, why not bring your Torchic out? Mew, bring out Combusken?"

"What for?" May asks.

"I know, Fire Pokemon are strong against Steel Types," Mew says.

"And they should be strongly effective against the Magnemite," Brock adds.

"We're on it!" May says. Then calls out, "Torchic, come on out and help us out!"

And Torchic comes out.

Mew then calls out, "Combusken, I choose you!"

May calls out, "Ember!"

"Flamethrower!" Mew calls out.

Both Pokemon fire their attacks, and land, causing the Magnemite to retreat.

"Yay Torchic, good job," May says.

"You too, Combusken," Mew says.

"That was awesome guys," Max says.

Brock then thinks, "These angry Magnemite and that Skarmary attacking Torkoal for no reason at all. Something strange is going on here."

"You're right. It's like they want to keep us off this valley," Mew says/

Suddenly, everyone hears a loud bang.

"What now?!" Brock asks.

"Was that an explosion?" Zinnia asks.

The group heads over and sees a couple Flamethrowers coming from the area of the explosion, followed by electrical bolts. They head over and find three Magnemite surrounding the Torkoal from earlier

"I think that's the same Torkoal!" Mew says.

The Torkoal tries to fight all three Magnemite and the Skarmory flying overhead, but to no avail before the Skarmory dives down while using Brave Bird and nails it before the three Magnemite attack at once with Thunderbolt.

"I can't just stand here and watch them gang up on that Torkoal! Let's go help, guys!" Mew says.

Pikachu, Eevee, and Combusken agree. Then all three head down the hill.

"Wait, Mew! Torchic and I can help too!" May calls out.

Suddenly, just as Torchic confirms May was right, Skitty materializes.

"What are you doing, Skitty?! I didn't call you out!" May asks, shocked.

Then Max says, "But think about it, Skitty's Assist Attack can be a great help!"

"Right. You can combine it with Torchic's Ember for a double attack," Brock says.

"Yeah! I'll give it a try!" May says. She then calls out, "Alright, Skitty, use Assist, now!"

"That's not right!" May cries out.

"That's Beauitfly's String Shot attack!" Max says.

However, the three Magnemite end up getting tied up by the String Shot.

"Look, it's working," Mew says.

"Perfect, the Magnemite can't move," Brock says.

"Way to go, Skitty! You showed them," May says.

Skitty meows in reply

"It was just luck that it happened, you know," Max says.

Then Skitty says, "Who cares? It was the end result that we can be proud of. Now come on, guys, let's go!"

May and her Pokémon head down the hill to lend a hand.

"Now let's really show em!" May says, then calls out, "Go, Torchic! Ember!"

Torchic performs the attack, but burns away the string, allowing the Magnemite the chance to escape, but the Skarmory fires a Swift attack at them in retaliation.

"Oh no!" Zinnia cries out.

"She needs help!" Max says.

Mew calls out, "Go, Pikachu, Thunderbolt!"

Pikachu performs the attack and knocks the Skarmory out of the sky, only for another to take its place.

"Watch out, Pikachu, here comes another!" Mew says.

May calls out, "Torchic and Skitty, help Pikachu!"

The two Pokémon charge in, only for the Torkoal to step in and.

"Torkoal, wait!" Mew calls out.

However, Torkoal fires a Flamethrower at Skarmory, forcing it to retreat.

"That's one powerful Flamethrower!" Tomo says.

"Thanks for the help, Torkoal," Mew says.

Torkoal snorts smoke out of its nostrils in response before collapsing.

"Torkoal!" Mew cries out, and kneels to it, "That Flamethrower must have taken the strength it had left!

Soon, the group tends to Torkoal.

Molly checks Mew's Pokedex, and Dextette says, "Torkoal, the Coal Pokémon. A fire Type. Torkoal burns coal in its body to produce energy. As a defense, Torkoal is able to release smoke from its nostrils and shell to confuse enemies."

"With a little rest, it should be fine," Brock says

"But why would it have such a hard time with those Magnemite when it has the elemental advantage?" Max asks.

"For one thing, it's outnumbered. It was an unfair fight," Mew says. Then turns to Torkoal, "I bet you can handle any opponent when it's a fair one on one fight, right, Torkoal?

Torkoal agrees with tears in its eyes before blowing smoke into Mew's face.

"Guess that means yes," May says.

"At least it got you this time," Max says.

"But that still leaves one question, why would Torkoal go back at all, instead of staying away?" Zinnia asks.

"Good question," Max says.

"Especially when it's outnumbered," Molly says.

"Oh well, at least the Magnemite will leave us alone," May says.

"I'm afraid not, May. Think we wandered into their territory," Mew says, "Skarmory can be very territorial."

"I think Mew is right," Brock says, "I'm pretty sure this is the Valley of Steel, and that is not a good thing."

"That's not good," Mew says.

Zinnia says, "My grandmother told me about it."

"I heard of it too," Max says, "Right before we left the Pokemon Center, Nurse Joy told us to be sure we stay FAR away from this valley."

"You're right. Nurse Joy mentions that this place is home to very territorial Steel Pokemon," Mew says.

"And as we've just learned, they can be very dangerous," Brock says.

"That's why the Steel Pokemon attacked us. We wandered into their territory. Same with Torkoal," Tomo says.

"Torkoal," (Sure did.) Torkoal says.

"And I bet as long as we're in their valley, they'll keep attacking us," Mew says.

"Well, then we should turn back. There must be another way to Mauville City?" Max asks.

"But we've already made it this far in. We need to keep going," Mew says.

"Plus, we all have our Fire Type Pokemon to help us," Tomo says.

"That's right. We'll get through this valley with our Fire Pokemon's help," May says.

Then turns to Mew, "So, what say you, Torkoal? Care to come along and help us get through this place with that Flamethrower of yours?"

Torkoal, with tears of joy, agrees as it snorts smoke from its nose.

"Once again, I think that's a yes," Mew says.

Soon, they hear something.

"There's that sound from before," May says.

Torkoal turns toward the sound and CHARGES forward.

"Torkoal, stop!" Mew calls out.

"It freaked out and ran away, just like it did the last time we heard that sound," Max says.

Then Brock says, "You know. I noticed something while I was treating Torkoal."

"Like what?" May asks.

"It looks to me like it was hurt by something else, other than the Magnemite and the Skarmory," Brock says.

"Really?" Jen asks.

"Which means, there must be a strong Steel Type Pokemon somewhere in the valley," Mew says.

"Like what?" Zinnia asks.

Meanwhile, Team Rocket was running for their lives from a Magneton)

Jessie cries out, "This is quite shocking!"

"Yes, I'm already feeling the burn!" James panics.

"I told you dat Skarmory from oilier told us to leave!" Meowth cries out.

Wobbuffet cries out, "WOOOO!" (RUUUUN!)

The Magneton launched a Thunderbolt powerful enough to send Team Rocket blasting off once more.

Team Rocket screams, "No! Not again!"

Team Rocket soon lands hard.

Jessie yelps, "Ow! Can somebody tell me what's going on here?!"

However, they soon find themselves face to face with a Steelix

Meowth panics, "Do you see what I see?"

"If you mean that very large Steelix, then, yes, I do," James says.

"Dat would be what I'm talking about," Meowth says.

Jessie shouts to Steelix, "Hey! I don't care how big and scary you might look, tell your buddies to stop attacking or they'll face my wrath!"

Steelix just roars at them, causing them to tense up and rethink things.

James sweat drops and says, "Say, Jess, maybe we should be a bit nicer to the enormous Iron Snake."

"You may have a point," Jessie replies, nervously.

Meowth adds, frightened, "Let's show him how friendly Team Rocket can be."

Woobbuffet." (Good idea.) Wobbuffet says.

Team Rocket nervously laughs and sets to work polishing Steelix.

"So sorry, Mr. Steelix, I didn't mean to raise my voice," Jessie apologies.

A nice wax job should smooth it over," James says.

Soon, Steelix starts to sparkle

"You'll soon be da shiniest Steelix in all da land," Meowth says.

Soon, Steelix's tail starts to really glow

"There. Would you look at that?" Jessie says.

"All the other Steelix will be so jealous.

The glow on Steelix's tail soon gets a bit brighter, causing Meowth to worry as he knew what it meant.

Meowth panics, "Someting ain't right here."

Steelix raises its tail and sends them flying with an Iron Tail, indicating it was preparing to attack them all along

"Nothing says tank you like an Iron Tail!" Meowth cries out.

Then Team Rocket screams, "That's strike three, and we're out!"

"Wobbuffet." (Man, that hurts!) Wobbuffet cries out.

Meanwhile, Torkoal was using its Flamethrower to make the three Magnemite from earlier disperse as they approached it.

"That's the way, Torkoal!" Mew says.

"Torkoal." (Thank you.) Torkoal says.

"Ember, Torchic!" May calls out.

Torchic fires the attack, nailing the Magnemite and causing them to retreat.

"Alright, we blew them away!" May cheers.

"Alright guys, let's go," Mew says.

Everyone then runs forward with everyone else following behind, only for Pikachu to come to a screeching halt when he sees a massive gorge right in front of him. Everyone soon stops.

"Oh, man. That was a close one," May says.

They soon hear screaming before they turn around and see Team Rocket zooming towards them.

Team Rocket cries out, "This is gonna hurt!"

"Can you guys tell what that is?" May asks.

"We're about to get a closer look," Brock says.

Team Rocket cries out, "Help us!

"Team Rocket?" Mew exclaims.

"Yes, it's us!" Jessie and James cry out.

Meowth screams, "Outta da way!"

The three land hard before falling down the gorge.

Team Rocket screams, "We're blasting off again!"

Suddenly, part of the ledge gives way, sending May and Torchic falling.

"May! Torchic!" Mew cries out.

May and Torchic continue to fall until May grabs a branch and Torchic to save their lives

"Whoa," May says, relieved. Then turns to her Pokemon, "Torchic, are you alright?"

"Torchic." (I think.) Torchic answers.

Soon, Mew calls out, "May! We'll get you both back up here, just hang in there!"

"Don't worry, I don't plan on letting go!" May calls out.

Suddenly, a Magneton starts coming in underneath May.

"A Magneton!" Max cries out.

"That's not good!" Brock says.

The Magneton launches a Thunderbolt at May and Torchic, but ends up missing.

May cries out, "Stop it!"

Torchic then fires Ember, but Magneton dodges before hitting both May and Torchic with Thunderbolt.

"Torkoal, blast it!" Mew calls out.

Torkoal launches a Flamethrower that hits Magneton and forces it to retreat.

"Way to go, Torkoal. You scared it off," Mew says.

"Torkoal." (Thank you.) Torkoal says.

"Hang in there, May. We're going to get you out," Max says.

May cries out, "I'm losing my grip! Hurry, you guys! Please!"

"Alright, I got an idea," Mew says. Then turns to Torkoal, "Torkoal, I'll need your help."

Torkoal agrees and Mew ties a rope around it

"This should be tight enough," Mew says. Then turns to the others, "Lower me down on the rope then pull us all up when I give the signal. Okay?"

"You got it," Brock says.

"Be careful, Mew," Zinnia says.

Mew agrees and starts to climb down before the Magneton from earlier returns.

Meloetta cries out, "Loetta!" (Mew, look out!"

"It's Magneton again!" Tomo calls out.

Mew looks to see Magneton is about to attack.

Mew calls out, "Combusken, help us out!"

Combusken then performs Flamethrower, but Magneton dodges.

"Hang on, I'm almost there," Mew calls out, and gets closer to them before grabbing her arm, "Now, let go of the branch and grab my hand."

May does so

"Got ya!" Mew says. Then calls out to the others, "Pull us up, now!"

"Everybody, pull hard!" Brock says.

Everyone that's got the rope pulls as hard as they can. As everyone pulls, the Magneton returns.

"Not again! Jen cries out.

Torkoal fires a Flamethrower, but Magneton dodges and retreats.

"Thanks, Torkoal," Brock says.

"Now it's up to us," Zinnia says.

Everyone continues to pull Torkoal snorts smoke from its nostrils. Finally, the rescue was finished as the Magneton returned, only for Torkoal to fire a Flamethrower at it and send it flying.

"Thanks for all your help," Mew says.

Torkoal fires a Flamethrower in Mew's face, though Mew leans back just in time)

May turns to her Pokemon, "You feeling okay, Torchic?"

"Maybe you should let it rest in its Pokéball," Brock says.

"Good idea," Molly says.

"Come on guys, let's get out of this valley as fast as we can before more Steel Pokemon shows up," Mew says.

Meanwhile, the battered Magneton reaches the location of the Steelix that sent Team Rocket flying and tells it what happened to it before the Steelix roars and starts heading underground.

Meanwhile, Mew and the others have come to the edge of a giant river.

"The road to Mauville City is just on the other side of those trees and that river so it shouldn't take too long," Brock says.

"So we'll be able to make it out of this valley in one piece," May says.

"Yeah, and without seeing a Pokémon any stronger than that Skarmory," Mew says.

"Good thing. It was hard enough to cross," Brock says.

And soon, they hear a loud sound.

"There's that noise again," Max says.

"I don't know why, but that sound seems very familiar," Tomo says.

Torkoal suddenly snorts smoke from his nose

"What's the matter, Torkoal?" Mew asks.

I think we're about to find out," Zinnia says.

The ground suddenly shakes before something bursts from the ground in a green vortex

"What's that?" Molly asks.

"We're about to find out," Brock says.

The vortex soon disappears to reveal a Steelix.

"It's a Steelix!" Mew says, shocked.

"So that's what we've been hearing all along," Brock says.

Torkoal suddenly fires a Flamethrower at the Steelix, but it blocks the attack with a Sandstorm.

"It used Sandstorm to protect itself," May says.

"That's a giant Pokémon," May says.

"And a powerful Steel Pokemon," Zinnia says.

Soon, Mew says, "I get it now. There was a stronger Pokemon that Torkoal wanted to fight, and it was this Steelix this entire time."

"Which also explains why Torkoal kept getting excited and tried to run off towards the sound," Brock says.

Suddenly several Magnemite, a Magneton and a Skarmory appear behind Steelix.

"Don't look now, but Magnemite, Magneton, and Skarmory showed up," Max says.

"And just when we're finally out of this dumb valley," May says.

Mew then demands, "Alright, Steelix, why'd you try to hurt my friend, Torkoal like that.?

But before Steelix could reply, Torkoal fired another Flamethrower, but Steelix counters with an attack of its own, resulting in an explosion that sent Torkoal flying back. Right on cue, Steelix readies an Iron Tail.

"Watch it, Torkoal! Here comes an Iron Tail!" Mew calls

Torkoal manages to evade in time before firing a Flamethrower, but the Steelix powers through it.

"Oh no," Mew says.

Even Torkoal is shocked.

Max says, "Flamethrower, should have been super effective, but it wasn't."

The Magnemite, Magneton and Skarmory charge in to attack, but Steelix forces them to stand down.

"What's going on?" Molly asks.

Tomo says, "Steelix wants everyone to back down, and wants to have a one on one battle with Torkoal."

"Then that's what we're gonna give it. Right, Torkoal?" Mew says.

Torkoal agrees.

"But that Steelix could take a Flamethrower without even flinching!" Max says.

"Exactly!" Mew says.

Mew's response puzzles everyone.

"Even though Torkoal must've known that, it still kept on going back. That's how determined it is to win back its pride as a fire Pokémon and beat its rival!" Mew says.

Torkoal snorts smoke from its nostrils

"Well, I guess you could call it burning for a victory," May replies.

Both Pokémon charge and Torkoal avoids several Iron Tail and Crunch attacks from Steelix.

"Alright, Flamethrower one more time!" Mew calls out.

Torkoal fires the attack and lands, but Steelix powers through it yet again and closes in for a Crunch, only for Torkoal to evade at the last second forcing Steelix to start digging underground.

"Torkoal must have used dig!" Jen says.

"So it can be anywhere!" May says, worried.

"That Flamethrower isn't doing much good," Mew says, but soon realizes, "Wait, that move that Flannery's Torkoal used against me during my gym battle?

Mew has a flashback to his gym battle with Flannery.

"That's it!" Mew says. Then calls out, "Torkoal, let's try Overheat!"

The inside of Torkoal's shell starts to light up

Then Brock says, "Remember, Mew, Overheat gets weaker every time you use it. Better try to make your first shot your best shot."

"Right. We'll make it count," Mew says. She then calls out, "Be ready, Torkoal. As soon as Steelix pops up, we hit it!"

Torkoal confirms as it heats up and patiently waits.

Mew says in thought, "Where are you, Steelix?"

Steelix finally surfaces and darts in.

And with that, Mew gives the signal, "Alright, Torkoal, fire the Overheat, now!"

Torkoal fires the attack with full force and lands on target, greatly hurting Steelix.

"Direct hit!" Zinnia shouts.

"Awesome!" Mew says.

"Talk about powerful," May says.

The force of the attack starts making Steelix slide backwards before it counters with Iron Tail.

"Oh, no!" Mew cries out.

Steelix prepares to strike, but flinches and collapses before a hush falls on the valley. The hush was soon broken by Skarmory ordering the Magnemite and Magneton to attack, but Steelix stops them before getting back up.

"It's back up," Jen says.

Torkoal and Steelix stare each other down before Steelix decides to forfeit and tells the other Pokémon it was time to go. The other Pokemon follow.

"Hey, look at that, Steelix is leaving," Max says.

"Along with the others," Molly adds.

"I'd say Torkoal got its respect back," Brock says.

"Torkoal, you were so great," Mew says.

Torkoal starts crying tears of joy and snorts smoke out of its nose, covering everyone's faces in soot.

"I'm assuming that means thank you," May says.

"I think so," Zinnia replies.

"For our own safety, we better stop complimenting it," Max says.

"I agree," Molly says.

Torkoal sweat drops and apologizes.

"It's okay, Torkoal," Mew says.

Later that evening, as the sun was setting, Mew, her friends, and Torkoal crossed the river.

"That was such a great battle, Mew," Max comments, "You and Torkoal worked so well together, it's hard to believe the two of you just met."

"Yeah, it does seem like we make a good team, doesn't it?" Mew says.

"Torkoal ("Sure does.") Torkoal says.

Then Mew asks, "What do you say? How would you like to be part of our group, Torkoal?"

Torkoal, crying tears of joy, pins Mew to the ground while agreeing to her proposal.

Mew giggles, "I'll take that as a yes."

Then Torkoal nuzzles her.

Mew smiles and says, "I think we're gonna be great together."

"Well, that's a happy sight," May says.

And Brock says, "You know, I think Torkoal's gonna fit right in."

"Great job, Mew," Max says.

"Way to go!" Max adds.

Mew and her friends have made it safely through the Valley of Steel, picking up a new friend along the way. And now, it's on to Mauville City, which will be the final stop before Mew's next gym battle.
