Episode 63: Manectric Charge
Mew and her friends are still making their way to Petalburg City in hope that she can earn her fifth badge at the gym. But first, they stop for a little fun at Mauville City.
"Well, here we are," Brock says
"Feels like forever since we've been to a big city," May says.
"Right. I say let's go grab something to eat," Mew says.
The group agrees.
Max soon spots something up ahead, "Look at that, guys!"
Everyone looks and sees what looks like a small carnival.
"Well, what do you know? Looks like there's a carnival in town," Brock says.
"And they have a bunch of different games," Molly says.
"I want to try that soccer one," Tomo says.
"Maybe we should check it out. Could be fun," Zinnia says.
Zinnia, Tomo, Molly, and Max run ahead to have some fun.
May says, "Hold on, I want to shop."
"Well, maybe you can start shopping here," Bock says.
"Where?" May asks.
Up ahead, they see some familiar faces in Pokémon costumes playing the rolls of carnival barkers.
The familiar voice calls out, "Step right up! Play a game, claim a prize! Everybody wins one!"
"Lots of stuff and beautiful jewelry too!" Another voice says.
May soon notices one that watches her attention, a purplish pink box.
"Look at that gorgeous ribbon case," May says, and becomes determined, "I'm going for it, now!" and runs into the carnival.
"Okay. I'm staying out of her way," Brock says.
The voice, reveals to be Jessie, says, "The old carnival and shopping stand scam…
"Works every time," Another voice says, revealing to be James.
In other words, this is another Team Rocket scheme.
Mew and May head on ahead.
"Hey, this could be a lot more fun if we're all together," May says.
"Good idea, May," Mew says.
May then calls out, "Come on out, Torchic, Beautifly, Aron, Mudkip, Skitty!
And with that, all of May's Pokemon are out.
Brock then calls out, "Forretress, Lotad, Mudkip, Spinda!"
And all four Pokemon come out.
Jen then calls out, "Jigglypuff, Flaaffy, Snover!"
Zinnia calls out, "Come on out, Asther!"
And Asther the Whismur comes out.
"Yeah!" Max, Tomo, and Molly say and throw out some of their Pokeballs.
Tomo calls out Rufflet, Bidoof, and Riolu.
Max calls out his Galarian Zigzagoon. Shroomish, and Surskit.
Molly calls out Yamper, Pawmo, and Espeon.
Mew then calls out, "Come on, guys! Let's have some fun!"
Soon, Swellow, Treeko, Combusken, and Mudkip will come out. Torkoal comes out and is in tears, and blows out smoke.
Mew then says, "Guess what, guys. Torkoal's our new teammate. Say hi.
While some of them greet Torkoal. Torkoal responds by crying and blowing out smoke again. That also gets Jessie and James covered in soot on their faces and costumes.
Jessie responds in disgust, "Blecch! What kind of Pokémon was that?!"
"I'd say it's one we don't need to bother stealing," James says.
A bit later, Brock steps up to try his luck at the soccer target game.
"The fans are quiet, wondering if Brock will land it again. With precision aim and a powerful punt...!" Brock says, and kicks the ball.
That hits the ten.
Brock says in confidence, "Yes. Bullseye. It's a perfect ten! How's that for fancy footwork? These feet can't be beat!"
Everyone claps with glee.
"Not bad, Brock," Mew says.
They soon heard Torkoal call out, "Torkoal Torkoal Torkoal," (Let me have a shot, Mew.)
Torkoal was staring at the soccer target game, ready to go.
"Torkoal!" (I want to play!) Torkoal says.
"Hey!" Max calls out.
"Looks like Torkoal wants to play," May says.
"Okay, then give it a try," Mew says.
"Torkoal can barely run. How is it going to kick the ball?" Max wonders.
Brock wonders the same thing, "Hmm…"
"Okay, Torkoal, you can do it!" Mew says.
Pikachu and Eevee cheer.
To everyone's astonishment, Torkoal stood up on its hind legs.
"Ah!" Max says, surprised.
"He stood up!" May says.
"Look at that!" Brock says.
"Alright Torkoal, take your best shot and put it right in the goal!" Mew calls out.
Torkoal prepares his best kick, but as he tries to do so, he accidentally slips on his left foot and falls over backwards. Everyone falls over in disbelief while laughing nervously. Torkoal starts crying from embarrassment.
Later, we see Brock and some other Water Pokémon playing water targets.
"Hit it!" Brock says.
Mudkip, Lotad, Brock, Zinnia, and Asther are playing.
Soon, Max, and Jen along with their Pokemon along with Pikachu and Eevee, are playing ring toss.
"Ready, go!" Max says.
Although some of them miss, May's Skitty used its tail and managed to get one in.
Later Treecko and Corphish are playing the high striker along with Riolu and Jigglypuff.
"Treecko Treecko!" (Ready, Corphish?!) Treecko asks.
"Corphish!" (Hammer time!) Corphish says.
They both hit the lever, but they weren't strong enough to make the puck reach the top, causing them to bicker.
Corphish says, "Corphish Cor!" (That was your fault, Treecko!)
"Treecko Tree!" (No, it wasn't. It was yours.) Treecko argues.
Mew gets between them, "Hey guys, there's no need to fight. Can't you two just get along."
They were soon interrupted by Torkoal snorting and billowing smoke again, this time with Ash, and the others.
Later, we see May, Molly, Tomo and several other Pokémon on some sort of dance floor, similar to the dance pads used in Dance Dance Revolution.
"Keep it up, guys!" May says.
Unbeknownst to them, it was Meowth behind the game machine.
"Unbeknownst to da heroes, while dey're all out dere playing and dancing around, we're going to bust a move of our own," Mewoth says, and pulls out a remote, "Time to face da music!"
With a press of a button, the water target game station shot out a blast of water, washing out those who were standing and playing while caging the smaller Pokémon.
"I won me a few prizes!" Jessie says.
Over at the high striker, Ash is giving the game a try but notices something wrong is going on with the mallet.
"This mallet has a mind of its own!" Mew cries out.
The mallet smacks the lever and makes the puck hit the bell, sending a net out over Torkoal, Corphish, Riolu, and Jigglypuff.
"Looks like its winner takes all," Jessie adds.
At the ring toss, the Pokémon end up getting trapped by the rings they were holding)
"Wow, we're really on a hot streak!" Jessie says.
At the dancing machine, Meowth bursts out of the screen with a net in hand)
"Here I come!" Meowth says and nets some of the smaller Pokémon.
"Well, this just keeps getting better," Jessie says. But frowns, "With the exception of this costume."
"Mine's kind of grown on me, actually," James says.
Then Meowth lowers the balloon, "Cause being furry is fun, but now we got to run!"
"So the fun has just begun," Jessie says.
"Hey! What are you doing stealing our Pokemon?!" Mew demands.
And with that, the Team Rocket motto kicks in.
Jessie:
Prepare for trouble, though you saw through our lies and deceit.
James:
Make it double and maybe you'll learn to cheat!
Jessie:
To protect the world from devastation.
James:
To unite all peoples within our nation.
Jessie:
To denounce the evils of truth and love.
James;
To extend our reach to the stars above.
Jessie: (removes her costume)
Jessie!
James: (removes his costume)
James.
Jessie:
Team Rocket blasts off like a rockin, sockin, soccer ball!
Holding the soccer ball.
James:
Surrender now or prepare to fall!
And then kicks the soccer ball at the soccer target game, which hits dead center to light up the board to show multiple Team Rocket logos.
Meowth:
Meowth! Dat's all!
Wobbuffet:
Woooobbuffet! (That's the game!)
"Team Rocket!" Everyone exclaims.
"Give us back our Pokemon!" Mew demands.
"Right now!" Zinnia adds.
Team Rocket refuses, "No!"
Mew then calls out, "Pikachu, Eevee, try to use Thunderbolt and break through the net!"
Pikachu and Eevee try, but fail.
Brock calls out, "Forretress, Rapid Spin!"
Forrettress tries to break loose, but also fails.
"Torchic, use Ember!" May calls out.
Torchic tries to burn the net, but to no avail.
Mew then calls out, "Everyone, use your attacks to break the net!"
All the Pokemon try to use their attacks at once, but none of their attacks are working.
"No way! How could nothing work?!" May says, shocked.
Team Rocket laughs
"Because, this time we made a wise investment, and went for the best net dat money can buy!" Meowth says
"Expensive…" Jessie says.
"But worth it!" James says.
Mew shouts, "Come back, you crooks!"
Suddenly, they all hear someone coming before they look back and see Wattson, Watt and Wattson's Elecktrike coming their way.
Wattson calls out, "Hold on!"
"Team Rocket hasn't won this battle yet!" Watt adds.
"It's Wattson and Electrike!" Mew says.
"Watts, too!" May adds.
Wattson calls out, "Electrike, Thunder Wave!"
Electrike fires the attack and hits the balloon, but nothing happens.
"Oh! Did I forget to mention dat we used some tungsten metal to reinforce our balloon and reflect electricity?" Meowth says.
Jessie and James also say, "Now that was a good deal."
Watt then throws his Pokeball and calls out, "Ampharos, use Iron Tail to cut through that rope!"
Ampharos comes out and does so, to Team Rocket's shock, while the Pokémon land safely.
"Are you all okay?" Mew asks.
Jessie turns to Meowth, "Why was the rope not reinforced, Meowth?""
"To afford dat net, we had to cut back somewhere," Meowth says.
James asks, "Is this really happening?"
Wattson then asks, "Ashley, Watts, let's finish this off."
"Right!" Mew and Watt say.
Wattson calls out, "Electrike, Thunder Wave!"
Mew calls out, "Pikachu! Eevee! Thunderbolt!"
Watt then calls out, "Thunder Shock, Ampharaos!"
All four attacks combine and strike the balloon, electrifying Team Rocket.
"Meowth, what's the excuse this time?!" Jessie cries out.
"Guess tungsten really is conductive!" Meowth says.
"I'd like my money back!" James adds.
Wobbuffet adds, "Woooobbuffet!" (Iiiiiin fuuuulll!)
The balloon suddenly explodes, sending Team Rocket flying.
Team Rocket cries out, "Team Rocket's blasting off again!"
May, Max, and Molly cheer, "You did it!"
"Wattson, Watt, thank you," Mew says.
"Yeah, you came just in time," Brock says.
"Don't mention it," Wattson says.
"We're just glad to see you all safe," watt says.
Ampharos agrees
Max then says, "What a cool Ampharos."
"First one I've seen," May says, and brings out her Pokedex.
Dextette says, "Ampharos, the Light Pokémon. An Electric Type. Ampharos has the ability to illuminate the tip of its tail. This special ability is used to guide the lost to safety."
"Ampharos sure showed Team Rocket a thing or two," Wattson says.
Suddenly, Electrike begins to glow.
"What's happening?" May asks.
Electrike is beginning to evolve," Watt says.
Electrike morphs until it gets bigger, along with longer legs and a longer neck and a tail before the glow fades to reveal its new form. A canine, quadrupedal Pokémon. Its body is mainly blue with a spiky, yellow mane on its head and yellow tufts of fur on its haunches and around its front feet. Its mane sticks straight up and has three points. It has a jagged upper jaw, red eyes, and holes on either side of its head that seem to be its ears. Each of its paws has three claws. Its blue, spike-like tail is bent at a sharp angle.
"Awesome! It evolved into a Manectric!" Max says, amazed.
"Alright!" Mew says and brings out her Pokedex.
Dextette says, "Manectric, the Discharge Pokémon. An Electric Type. Manectric has the ability to gather local electrical energy in its mane and then discharge it, creating thunderclouds.
Wattson chuckles with a grin, "Welcome, Manectric."
Torkoal suddenly starts crying tears of joy before snorting smoke from its nose, covering everyone in soot
"Sorry, Wattson, Torkoal does that whenever it gets excited," Mew says.
"So, you caught yourself a Torkoal," Wattson says.
"And we made a new friend," May says.
Zinnia says, "Hi, I'm Zinnia. And this is my Whsimur, Asther."
"It's nice to meet you," Watt says.
"That's right. Pretty cool, huh, Wattson? I'd love to battle you with it to see what it can do. What do you say?" Mew says.
"I'd like the chance to test my Manectric, so I guess that means you've got yourself a deal, Ashley," Wattson says.
"Really? That's great!" Mew says, excited.
"Pika, Pika!" (Absolutely!) Pikachu agrees.
Then Wattson notices, "Is this your Skitty?"
"Yeah, I've been working on training it," May says.
Watt kneels down and pets Skitty, "Well, looks like you're doing a great job."
"Oh, well, thank you," May says.
Then Watt asks, "So, what would you say to a battle with my Ampharos, May?"
"Sure. That'd be really great," May says.
After that, the gang arrives at the Mauville Gym.
"It's been a while since we've been to the Mauville gym," Mew says.
"It looks different," May says.
"You're right. It seems different than last time," Tomo says.
"You're right. I don't remember the front of the building looking like this," Brock says.
"I guess it has had some renovation since we were last here," Mew says, "We should get inside."
But Watt stopped her, "Don't open the door."
"That's right. More than just the front of the gym has been improved," Wattson says.
Excluding Zinnia, the gang flinches in response.
"You don't mean…" Mew says, worried.
"Going through the door…" Max says, wary.
"Makes for a wild ride!" Brock adds.
The group remembers what happened the last time they entered the Mauville gym.
"Yeah. I remember it now," May says.
"Me too!" Tomo and the others react.
Confused, Zinnia asks, "What are you talking about?"
"Trust me, you don't want to know," Jen says.
"Those old traps can't even compare to this new one. So, I suggest you all watch your step, there's no telling what's around the next corner," Wattson says.
Soon, everyone is inside and ready for May and Watt to start their battle first with both of their Pokémon out.
Wattson says, "Our first practice battle between May and Watt will now begin! Trainers, are you ready?"
"Yes!" Watt and May answer.
"Go May!" Mew cheers.
"You can do it, sis!" Max says.
The Pokemon cheer.
May says in thought, "Wow, his Ampharos looks really strong. But Skitty needs this battle experience, so we've just got to believe in ourselves."
"Now, begin!" Wattson announces.
May calls out, "Go, Skitty, Double Slap!"
Skitty leaps into battle and lands the attack.
Then May calls out, "Follow up with Tackle!"
Skitty darts in and lands the attack
"Ampharos!" Watt calls out.
Wattson laughs, "Immobilizing with Double Slap them striking with a Tackle. Great combination!"
"That's the way to do it," Brock says.
"Yeah, way to go, May!" Max says.
"Not bad, but don't think I'll be giving up so easily," Watt says, "Thunder Shock, Ampharos!"
And Ampharos calls out.
May then calls out, "Dodge it, Skitty!"
Skitty does so
"Redirect!" Watt calls out.
Ampharos shifts the attack slightly enough so that it can hit Skitty, which it does
Then Watt calls out, "Now use Iron Tail!"
Ampharos closes in and lands the attack hard, causing Skitty to hit the ground and come skidding to a halt
"Oh, no!" May cries out.
The dust settles, but Skitty is shown to be okay, though a little scratched.
"Skitty, can you keep going?" May asks.
Skitty manages to get up
"This looks bad," Jen says.
"Ampharos is pretty strong," Zinnia says
"Hang on, Skitty!" May calls out.
The Pokemon cheer, (You can do it!)
"One more attack like that and we're finished," May says in thought.
Then Watt says, "Well, it's time to wrap this up. Ampharos, Thunder Shock!"
Ampharos fires the attack.
Mew calls out, "Look out!"
"Watch it, May!" Max cries out.
May then calls out the next attack, "Skitty, Assist, now!"
Skitty performs the attack and darts forward, narrowly avoiding the oncoming Thunder Shock.
"What's this?" Watt asks, shocked.
Wattson laughs before Skitty lands its Assist-fueled attack.
"That was a Quick Attack!" Max says.
"I bet it's from Torchic," Mew says.
Then May calls out, "Okay, Skitty, finish up with Double Slap!"
Skitty then performs the attack and the final strike knocks Ampharos out cold.
"Ampharos! Watt calls out.
Wattson then announces, "Ampharos is now unable to battle! May and her Skitty win!"
May cheers, "Way to go, Skitty! I'm so proud of you!"
Skitty meows as a way of saying thanks
"That was awesome, May!" Max says.
"Great battle!" Tomo says.
"I must admit, May, your battling was very nicely executed, from your combination attacks to the timing with that Assist," Wattson says.
"I agree. Well done," Watt says.
May smiles as she picks Skitty up, "Thank you both so much. It was really the perfect practice for when I have my next Contest Battle."
"Does that mean you're planning on entering a Pokemon Contest soon?" Watt asks.
"Yep," May says.
"But don't forget, May, Assist chooses randomly from all your Pokemon," Mew says, "Be careful to not overuse it."
"Right. I'll keep that in mine, thanks," Mays ays.
Wattson then says, "But that's what can make the battle a bit more fun, not knowing what the next move will be, which is the element of surprise," and laughs.
"I'm just excited about our battle, Wattson. So, what do you say you and I get started now?" Mew says.
"Great! I was waiting for you to ask!" Wattson says.
Meanwhile, Team Rocket had arrived outside the Mauville gym.
"So, dis is da Mauville gym, huh?" Meowth says.
"Yes. And everyone knows that gyms are sometimes jam packed with powerful Pokémon of a certain element. In this case, the electrical variety," James says.
"Oh, it will be hard to get in, but not hard enough to scare away Team Rocket," Jessie says.
"That's true, because we're a hardheaded lot," James says.
Meowth agrees, "Yeah, and Jessie is practically fearless when it comes to a heist."
Jessie doesn't take too kindly to it. Thank you, Meowth, but we get the point," She then says, "Anyway, not knowing when to give up is the mark of both a good villain. So, let's get some Pokémon!
"Yeah!" James and Meowth agree.
Team Rocket tries to go in through the door, but end up knocking it over
"What's dis?" Meowth asks.
"Don't know," James says.
Suddenly, the door lifts up and starts zooming down the track.
Jessie cries out, "Stop!"
"Someone, help us!" Meowth screams.
"Me and Jessie don't like rollercoasters!" James panics.
Meanwhile, on the battlefield, Mew and Wattson were almost ready to start.
Mew then calls out, "Torkoal, I choose you!"
Torkoal then comes out and snorts smoke from its nose.
Wattson then calls out, "Manectric, here we go!"
Manectric comes out as well.
Watt says, "The practice battle between Ashley and Wattson will now begin! Trainers, are you ready?"
"You bet!" Mew says.
"Ready when you are!" Wattson says.
"We'll get this going," Mew says. Then calls out, "Torkoal, Flamethrower!"
Torkoal launches the attack.
Wattson then calls out, "Dodge it, Manectric, and use Tackle!"
Manectric charges, avoids the oncoming Flamethrower, and nails Torkoal, who manages to skid to a stop.
"Hang on, Torkoal!" Mew calls out.
Torkoal leaps into battle.
"Manectric is incredible!" May says.
"This is going to be a cool match," Tomo says.
"That's for sure," Max says.
Meanwhile, Team Rocket kept on riding along, this time going up an incline.
"Uh, guys? Any idea what happens when we get to da top?" Meowth asks.
"We get off, and fast," Jessie answers.
"Before it goes down!" James says.
Right as James speaks, the platform reaches the top of the hill and stops.
"Hey, we stopped," Jessie says.
"So, what is dis ting anyways?" Meowth asks.
"Pure, terror," James says.
Suddenly, a trap door opens, and the platform falls through.
Team Rocket cries out, "Freefall!"
Meanwhile, as Team Rocket lands with a thud, the battle continues
Wattson calls out, "Manectric, try a Bite attack!"
Manectric charges in.
Mew then calls out, "Iron Defense, go!"
Torkoal darts into its shell just in time before Manetric bites Torkoal.
Manetric leaps back .
"That's okay, just shake it off," Wattson says.
And Manetric does as it's instructed.
"It's going to take a lot more than that to stop a Torkoal, you know," Mew says.
Torkoal snorts out smoke in agreement.
"I can see your defenses are strong, Ashley," Wattson says, "In that case, Manectric, give em a Thunder Wave!"
Manetric fires the attack.
Then Mew calls out, "Torkoal, Overheat!"
Torkoal's shell lights up from the inside before the attack launches and overpowers the Thunder Wave before hitting Manectric hard.
"That was a powerful yet clean hit!" Watt says.
"How'd you like that, Wattson?" Mew calls out.
Wattson says, "I enjoyed it very much, Ash. However, it seems Manectric is only getting warmed up."
As Wattson talks, Manectric shakes off the effect of the attack.
"That's fine with us, Wattson, cause Torkoal's got a whole lot of fire left in its belly and shell. Check it out!" Mew says.
Torkoal snorts out smoke while also shooting smoke out of the top of its shell.
Then Wattson says, "Don't forget, Ashley, there's a surprise around every corner in every battle," And laughs.
"I don't know about you guys, but this is such an awesome battle! Ashley and Wattson are really giving it everything they've got," Max says.
"Yeah, well, they're both fierce competitors, that's for certain," Brock says.
"I can't wait to see what Manectric's going to do next," Mays ays.
Meanwhile, Team Rocket found themselves in a whirlpool
"Do you have...?" Jessie asks.
"That sinking feeling?" James asks,
We're all washed up!" Meowth says.
Back at the battle…
Mew calls out, "Torkoal, again, use Overheat!"
Torkoal fires the attack.
"Here comes that surprise! Charge!" Wattson calls out.
Manectric takes the attack right in the face but manages to hold on.
"Manetric is not fighting back," Zinnia says.
"But why?" May wonders.
"That's because it's using Charge. It can help an electrical Pokémon store energy," Max says.
"Okay, here's our chance! Torkoal, Flamethrower!" Mew calls out.
Torkoal fires the Flamethrower and engulfs Manectric, but it stills holds on.
"Looks like this is going to be it for Manectric," Jen says.
"I wouldn't be so sure about that," Brock says.
"Why?" Molly asks.
"After charging up, Manetric's electric attacks will become more powerful," Brock says.
"In other words, Torkoal might be in trouble," Zinnia says.
Manectric soon opens its eyes and forces itself out of the Flamethrower.
"Uh oh!" Mew says.
"How about showing us a Thunder Wave?" Wattson calls out.
Manectric does so by creating a blue sphere of electricity
"Torkoal, try to stop it with Flamethrower!" Mew calls out.
"Good idea, Mew decided to switch," May says.
"But who knows what might happen," Brock says.
"Yeah, but who knows what might happen.
Mew and Wattson call out, "Attack!"
Both attacks launch, but this time it's the Thunder Wave that prevails as it strikes Torkoal.
"Torkoal!" Mew cries out.
Torkoal soon hits the ground, knocked out.
Watt announces, "Torkoal is unable to battle, Manectric wins! The victory goes to Wattson!
Wattson smiles, "Excellent! Good job, Manectric!
As Manectric celebrates
Mew checks on Torkoal, "Torkoal, are you okay, buddy?"
Torkoal regains consciousness and confirms.
"You were great, Torkoal, you deserve a long rest, and of course some extra coal later," Mew says.
"Torkoal," (Thank you.) Torkoal says.
Meanwhile, Team Rocket was out of the whirlpool and back on the track.
"What kind of ridiculous ride is this anyway?" Jessie asks, stunned.
"Feels like da Magical Mystery Tour," Meowth says.
"Well, if it's so magical, why can't we make it disappear?" James adds.
He then looks ahead and sees something, "There's a door ahead."
Meowth weakly says, "Open…"
"Says who?" Jessie adds, weakly.
"Open says me!" Meowth says.
The door opens, and Team Rocket is greeted by not one, not two, but three robotic Raikou, though they have no idea that they're robots.
Jessie is shocked, "I don't believe my eyes!"
"Three beautiful Raikou!" James says.
"I got to practice dose magic woids more often," Meowth says.
One of the Robo Raikou roars, frightening Team Rocket.
Jessie says, "This is a gold mine and that old fool who runs this gym doesn't even know it! Let's catch them all and either give them to the boss or sell them to the highest bidder!
"Right!" James and Meowth.
"Seviper. come on out!" Jessie calls out.
James also calls out, "You, too, Cacnea! Go!"
Both Pokemon come out of their Pokeballs.
Meanwhile, back at the battlefield, both competitors shake hands.
"Well, Wattson, thank you for a great match," Mew says.
"The pleasure was mine, Ashley, and it was great for Manectric," Wattson says.
Then Mew says, "Now I'm more excited than ever for my next battle. And we'll keep up our training and be back for another challenge."
Pikachu and Eevee agree.
Wattson laughs, "Now that's the spirit! I can't wait!"
Soon, Watt says, "May, I meant to tell you something."
"Yeah?" May
Watt asks, "Are you aware that a Pokémon Competition is coming up soon in Verdanturf Town? I think you should consider competing in it."
"I've never been to Verdanturf Town," May says.
Max checks the PokéNav, "Well, I guess we could go there first and then double back to Petalburg City."
"Then Verdanturf Town it is," Brock says.
