Chapter 11—Confronting Jóhanna Mom to Mom about Stahl
Michele's POV
Once the kids went into the house, Jóhanna, Gunnar's mom came up to me and asked, "Where Gunnar going, is it what you call it, a good school?"
"Eden Hall or Minnesota University?" I asked.
"Minnesota?" Jóhanna said slowly.
"Yes, it's a very good school. One of the best in the country, outside of the Ivy League," I said.
"Ivy League?" Jóhanna said slowly.
"Uh private universities that are very hard to get into, Harvard, Yale, Columbia," I said.
"Oh," Jóhanna said.
"The Gophers got into the conference playoffs, this year," I said.
"That good?" Jóhanna said.
"Yes," I said.
"Will he be happy?" Jóhanna asked.
"I think so. It sounds like to me that your husband rides on him, until Gunnar is in a lather," I said.
"What that mean, ride on Gunnar?" Jóhanna mom asked.
"It means that Stahl is always on his case about something. Is Stahl that awful of a man?" I asked.
"No. He a good man," Jóhanna said slowly.
"It's just an observation that I have had, every time those two get together. Gunnar becomes anxious and it doesn't seem like Gunnar wants to be around him," I said.
"Are you saying Stahl is what you say hard on Gunnar?" Jóhanna said slowly.
"Yes. Too hard, I think," I said.
"That is the way it is in Ìsland, Stahl's Pabbi was hard on Stahl. Mine was hard on me, Stahl is hard on Gunnar and all of our kids. I am sure that one day Gunnar will be hard on his children," Jóhanna said slowly.
"I am just saying it is not right," I said.
"Well we don't raise our boys to be how do you say be sissy's," Jóhanna said slowly.
"DO NOT EVER QUESTION MY MEANS OF DISCIPLINE," Stahl said.
And with that sentence I shut up.
Adam's POV
I had to convince Gunnar to come out and help finish the decorating for the party tomorrow. Luckily within an hour of the fight Gunnar, Hans and Kelly came out to the garage. With Kelly being carried in her bouncer.
As the afternoon wore on more Ducks showed up with what they were contributing to the party, Averman and Russ brought the silverware, and Luis and Jesse brought the chips, dip, mints and nuts. The only one that could not bring their contribution today was Goldberg, because of today being the Sabbath. They are orthodox Jews, so they must take the Sabbath off each and every week. They had to practice this until an hour after sunset and by the time they got to the deli and brought the food it would have been 1030 at night. Luckily, Goldberg and his parents were bringing the food over at about 830 tomorrow morning, just before we were to leave for church, since there was a ceremony for the graduates of that church. I and Gunnar didn't want to be included but on the insistence of Grandma we were.
