Chapter One: Remain Hidden

500 years later, somewhere in the middle of the archipelago ocean, the last of the Night

Furies was soaring at great speeds, evaluating the ocean surface bellow. He had emerald

green eyes,

two large wings and two smaller wings near the base of his tail. His tail has two

fins, one on each side that helped him fly, but the left one wasn't a part of his body, rather it

was a man made version built for him after he lost it years prior. He has sharp claws on his

four legs and a snout like other dragons, however, what really made him stand out was the

colour of his scales. His body was almost entirely covered in jet-black scales, and small light

patches on his sides. This made him almost impossible to see during night time, but caused

him to stand out in broad daylight like a black sheep in a herd. While he didn't touch the

water, the sheer speed of which he was travelling was enough to leave a trail of waves and

ripples splitting behind him. Of course, he didn't notice nor care as his attention was focused

on surveilling what lay in the water below him. He was searching for something, yet he

couldn't find it. For almost miles the water below him remained blue and empty, but after a

while of searching, the Night Fury suddenly stopped and hovered over the surface, grinning

at what he found. Fish. Lots of fish. Probably a dozen schools of decently sized tuna.

Without a moment to lose, he dived down into the water bellow, scooping up as many fish as

he could in his jaw. Although many fish dogged out of his way, he still managed to trap a few

in his jaw, wiggling desperately as they tried to escape. However, this sensation within his

mouth quickly died down, as he emerged from the surface, allowing the water to leave his

mouth without losing the fish, due to his retractable teeth trapping them in his mouth.

Satisfied with what he had found, he turned around and flew back to the rock where he had

left the others, eager to show them what he had found.

As Toothless flew closer to the lone rock in the middle of the ocean, the four figures he had

left on top of it became clearer and clearer. One was Meatlug, a light brown Gronkle known

amongst the group for her caring, motherly, and loyal personality, as well as her love of

rocks, a common delicacy amongst Gronckles. Next to her stood Barf and Belch, a green

Hideous Zippleback with brown spots along their back and wings. Despite sharing the same

body, the two were known to constantly bicker with one another, as they could be seen doing

now. The dragon who was most irritated by them was Hookfang, who sat next to him. The

biggest of the group, the Monstrous Nightmare had red and orange scales run down his

body, and stood tall with the red stripes that ran down his body from his spiraled horns to his

tail visible for all to see. Toothless rolled his eyes slightly, as he knew his friend was

incredibly prideful, yet he was also reckless, slightly selfish, and incredibly stubborn.

However, he could be friendly and caring in the most unlikely of scenarios, most of the time

involving Toothless or the others to some extent. Finally, there was Stormfly, Toothless's

closest friend. Despite being a Deadly Nadder, Stornfly had a very beautiful and bird-like

appearance due to her blue and yellow scale pattern, with winged-forelimbs that were about

the same size as her, and small, yellow eyes, and yellow spikes that lined the top of her

head almost like a crown. Toothless knew that she was very curious, playful, and even loved

to flirt with other dragons, including himself and Toothless at certain points of their lives.

However, that time between them had long passed, and what remained was an incredibly

loyal friend who was at Toothless'

side almost all of the time.

As the Night Fury landed on the bank of the island, he released the dozen fish he had

managed to capture onto the floor, landing in a big wet pile for the other dragons to see.

Alright, I found all of this just a couple minutes north of this rock, Toothless communicated

through growls, pointing his left wing in the direction he was addressing. Although the

dragon's language was inaudible to humans, it was understandable to almost all species of

dragons (at least according to what Toothless had been told). There's a larger school where I

found these guys, and should be enough to feed the Berkian Dragons back to the hidden

world. But if we're going to catch them, we need to be strategic. Toothless then began to lay

out a plan for the best way to capture the fish in his head, as he assigned each of the

dragons present with a job.

Hookfang, you dive into the water and use your flamescales to send the fish to the surface.

Even though the water will extinguish your flames, the water will still be heated enough to

make it unbearable for any of the fish. Stormfly, if any fish try swimming sideways rather than

towards the surface, swing your spiketail towards them and scare them back towards

Hookfang. This should hopefully deter them from escaping. Barf, Belch once enough fish

have swum to the surface, I want you to use your gas to cause an explosion along the

water's surface. This should hopefully send a sonic boom through the water that will stun the

fish and send them floating towards the surface. Once it's safe to retrieve them, that's where

you come in, Meatlug. You'll scoop up as many fish as possible with your jaw, and bring

them back here, before retrieving more. Once we have enough, we'll return home.

Everybody on board?

Almost every head nodded, even though there was some groaning heard from Barf and

Belch. They hadn't really been the workful type, but when the other dragons lifted into the

sky, they joined as well. Toothless knew it was only because it was either food or no food for

them, and not because they actually respected him as the Alpha. That was part of the

reason he had brought along his friends instead of actually efficient fishing dragons, since

they would probably think he was lazy or a bad leader, being unable to fish for his kind, let

alone himself. Toothless quickly swiped that thought away however, as the five began to

approach the fishing spot he had found. Hookfang was the first to spring into action, lighting

himself on fire and diving quickly into the water. As predicted, this startled all the fish in the

water, sending them swimming in different directions. However, as quickly as they scattered,

Stormfly flew around the area and used her tail to shoot multiple spikes into the water. As

intended, this startled the fish, who swam back towards Hookfang, before swimming

upwards due to the heat of the water. Unbeknownst to them however, Barf had already lined

the surface with gas, before Belch used his sparks to ignite the fumes, causing a huge

explosion. Soon after, lifeless fish started popping up on the ocean's surface, as as the

fumes cleared, Meatlug flew down with her mouth open wide, scooping up as many fish as

possible, before returning to the rock as possible.

Luckily for the dragons, Toothless had managed to find a treasure trove of fish, as they found

themself retrieving hundreds upon hundreds of fish. Luckily, thanks to the skills they had

learnt over the years, they had come prepared with a makeshift basket, crafted out of

materials from their home. As Meatlug dropped another load into it, Toothless couldn't help

but think to himself. This isn't normal. Dragons working together, using strategies and

crafting tools to capture fish? It would seem crazy to normal dragons. Toothless then paused

and began to reminisce. Well, we're not normal dragons. I'm certainly not. Haven't been for

almost 8 years now. He looked out towards the distance. Despite not being able to see

anything, he knew what was out there was the reason he was like this, and why he and half

of his kind were like this.

Vikings. Or Berkians to be more specific. We were at war with them for the longest time, for

reasons that were completely out of our control. We needed to provide food for the

treacherous Red Death, who in turn would not eat us, and the Berkians were the only source

of food we could find, with their sheep, cows, chickens, and even fish. Yet they never knew

of our predicament, and instead saw us as thieves and murderers. So long we thought,

knowing nothing but kill or be killed. If it continued, it would have surely been the end of at

least one of our species. Yet they all changed when he shot me down. Hiccup. The viking

boy who everyone in his village saw as a joke. Nobody believed him when he said they shot

down one of the most powerful and dangerous dragons they knew of, yet there I was that

day, doing my best to protect my kind without stealing or harming anyone, and he managed

to shoot me out of the sky, finding me in the forest the following day.

He paused and looked up at the sky.

He should have killed me that day. He wanted to kill me. He had his knife above me, ready

to finally please his father and tribe. And yet…he didn't. He spared me. He even tried to free

me, before I pinned him down myself and fled soon after. We both had the chance to kill

each other that day, and yet, we didn't.

The night fury chuckled to himself. I wouldn't have

lasted too long without him. Not only did he craft me a new tail once he learnt of my lost tail,

but somehow, we managed to become close friends as time continued. A dragon befriending

a human, who would have thought?

Of course that led to its own problems of course. A girl he liked, Astrid found out about us,

and then the Berkains also found out. He stopped himself. Or rather, I exposed myself when

Hiccup was in danger, getting myself captured in the process. He glared over at Hookfang,

who had come to take a breath. Thanks a lot, Hooky. Of course, if it wasn't for that, we

wouldn't have been able to come together and defeat the Red Death, freeing the enslaved

dragons. After that, things began to look up for our two races. Me and Hiccup introduced his

friends to the dragons who they had been fighting, including Stormfly and the others, and we

even discovered some new species and civilisations as we explored the world.

The smile on Toothless's face dropped though, as his positive memories gave way to more

tragic ones. There were some threats and incidents we faced though. Of course not

everyone in the world was on board with our species coexisting with humans. One moment

in particular struck his mind, relating to when Toothless was controlled by the former king of

the dragons, the Bewilderbeast. He remembered how that moment occurred when Hiccup

tried to change the mind of a man called Drago, and how the situation ended

with…Toothless gritted his teeth, trying to forget about that memory as quickly as possible.

Of course, that led to me becoming Alpha, the king of all dragons. Damn, even thinking that

still sounds unbelievable to this day. Of course the biggest event to occur during that time is

when I met my mate, Light Fury. We never gave her a name besides that, but I'm sure we'll

think of something one day. She was the prettiest dragon I had ever met, and she was

another fury, another one of my kind! We got off to a rocky start, due in part to her less

accepting nature towards humans. However, we hit it off in the end. Now she rules alongside

me over all of dragonkind. She even showed me the Hidden World, the home of all dragons,

a place me and Hiccup had been searching for at that point of time.

Toothless looked back out towards sea as he reflected on what separated the two from each

other.

It was perfect timing, I guess. Of Course the outside world would never leave us alone. We

literally retreated to the farthest reaches of the earth, and they still found us. They put both

our kinds in grave risk. There was a chance where I almost died, Hiccup almost died, and

Light Fury almost died! (sigh) It was clear at that point that we needed to disappear, retreat

back to our home, and live away from Hiccup and the Berkians, until it is safe to return.

Toothless looked back at his prosthetic tail, the one reminder he had of Hiccup and his past

life. I still wish it could have been different. I wish we all coil still be living together,

accomplishing our dreams united as one. Yet, here we are. I haven't returned to New Berk

since the day we left. I don't even know how Hiccup is going, let alone if he's even alive! Ok

Toothless, that's a bit extreme, of course he's still alive, probably happy on Berk. Plus, I have

my own commitments to attend to. I'm the king of Dragons for crying out loud. That's a pretty

big role. But…he stopped, and didn't know whether he thought this next part, or spoke it out

loud. I wish he was still here to help me sometimes.

The Night Fury was suddenly brought back to reality when he caught Stormfly out of the

corner of his eye trying to get his attention. She was extending and withtracking her tailbarbs

repeatedly, and flapping around like a seagull in distress, yet she refrained from squawking

or roaring, which confused Toothless for a moment. However, he quickly remembered the

warning signs they had arranged, and he quickly realized what he was trying to tell her.

Quickly, Toothless sent out a sonic cry, one that wasn't too loud, but loud enough for the

dragons in the area to cease their activity and return to the rock as quickly as possible. As

soon as the other three arrived, Toothless signaled all of them to hide their stash and dive

into the water for cover, and judging by his quiet gestures, they all immediately knew what he

was saying. Humans were coming.

As a lone boat began to grow on the horizon, Toothless peaked out from underneath the

water, trying to make the best visual out of who these people were. The others were doing

there best to blend in with the surroundings, regardless of how little they had. Hookfang,

thanks to his excessive training with his rider, Snoutlout, had dived far underwater, and was

holding his breath for as long as possible. Meatlug, given her rock like build, was attempting

to pass herself off as an underwater part of the rock, similar to Stormfly, who had reshaped

her spikes to look more jagged and rock - like. Barf and Belch on the other hand weren't as

experienced or skillful with iding, and rather had flipped the basket on it's head, hiding the

fish within, as well as themselves. Due to the baskets'

natural materials, it blended in well

enough with the rock, however, there were parts that did noticeably stand out, which worried

Toothless. Hopefully they won't be too noticeable, he thought.

As the boat got larger, he was able to make out more of its features, and as he realised what

type of ship it was and who was on it, he sighed a breath of relief. It was a fishing ship, and

the two fishers manning it were Bucket and Mulch, two vikings who would bring in the

village's fish from time to time. Even though he had met up with the two countless times

during his time with Hiccup, he still didn't let himself or the others reveal themselves, just in

case.

"I swear Bucket, why did you insist on bringing us out this far?" That sounded like Mulch. "It's

hard enough mapping out new fishing routes closer to New Berk, yet it's even harder

mapping them miles out in the ocean!"

"Aw come on Mulch!" That was definitely Bucket. "Everyone knows the best place to find fish

is out in the open ocean. Plus, now that Hiccup's dragon has taken all the dragons into

hiding, we should be able to fish without interruption."

"Don't get your hopes up Bucket," Mulch sighed. "Trouble always seems to be present in the

waters we sail. It's practically like it's watching us from the depths of the water.

You can say that again. Toothless comically thought. As he eyed the boat, the two didn't

seem to notice any of the dragons hiding in the water, and furthermore, they didn't seem to

find suspicion in the basket Barf and Belch were hiding in. "Hey Mulch! I remember that rock!

We passed the other day, remember? That must mean there's a good fishing spot nearby!"

"Bucket, that spot was miles away from here. Besides, fish don't stay in the same spot all the

time. What if a predator comes along?"

"Oh you mean like a dragon? Good point Mulch. Wait, isn't that hidden world close to here?"

Toothless's heart began to speed up as those last words left Bucket's mouth. He didn't want

to hurt the two fishermen, but he didn't want to reveal himself, even though allowing them to

sail towards the waterfall was like sending lambs to be slaughtered. Furthermore, as the

boat began to float above Toothless, he was able to get a look at Mulch, who was eyeing the

basket on the rock. Toothless's heart was pacing fast now, not because he was scared as to

what might happen if the hideous Zippleback was found out, but rather because he didn't

know what would happen. He quickly glanced around at the other hidden dragons. Hookfang

was seemingly having trouble holding his breath, and Stornfly and Meatlug appeared to be

just as on edge as Toothless. He could only imagine how Barf and Belch were feeling inside

the basket with the fish.

Thankfully, after what felt like an eternity, Mulch eventually turned back to Bucket, agreeing

with his partner. "You're right, Bucket. We should probably head back to the mainland before

any trouble comes our way. It is getting late after all."

"Good idea Mulch." The ship began to turn and drifted away from the dragons, as the banter

of the two fishermen faded into the distance. As Toothless and the others emerged from the

water, Toothless growled to check if everyone was ok. Every dragon responded yep in

dragonese, although Hookfang could clearly be seen rolling his eyes, probably because he

thought two fishermen weren't a big threat. If only he knew a similar thought had almost got

Toothless killed once. Barf and Belch were the last two to respond, lifting the basket off of

themselves, and as they emerged, the fish the five had spent hours gathering tumbled back

into the ocean, sinking towards the bottom.

"OUR FISH!" Stormfly cried, as Meatlug and Hookfang quickly sprung into action, as

Hookfang quickly swung the basket around, keeping as much as they could, while Meatlug

tried to grab as much as her mouth could hold. Barf and Blech stood there puzzled for a

moment, before turning to toothless and giving him a sheepish apologetic look. Stormfly

smacked the wing into her head, and Toothless just let out a long sigh. Clearly there are

some things we need to work on as a team, he thought, before adding, as well as how I can

be better at preventing situations like this. As he looked to the sky though, he did notice that

the sun had lowered significantly since the time they had arrived, and figured it was time

they should be heading back. After Meatlug had gathered enough fish, he let out a roar,

signalling the other dragons to prepare for flight. Hookfang and Stormfly each grabbed

different ends of the basket, and gradually, they all began to rise into the air, getting ready to

return back home, to the Hidden World.
