Last week, a new DPS track got me in the mood, and this week, it's a Rustage track for Doctor Stone. I had the foresight to listen to it after watching the latest episode, so it was a real bop.
I admit that this chapter had some issues, as I had to make some changes to the plans when I realized that they just didn't work with the set-up I've done, but I'm happy with the finished product and hope you are too.
Chapter 52: Steel and Flames
Getting to the rooftop was easy enough. Hebimi found that his training with Burnin in this new form was paying back the investment threefold. Because of that, he spotted the creature and could confirm that it had to be another of the League's Nomu.
His assumption about it fleeing also seemed to be off. While the thing ran, it seemed dead set on destroying anything and everything in its path, with no rhythm or reason to any of it. "Does the League just want to watch the city be destroyed? Why?" Koharu spoke, her voice seemingly forming in his head.
"What else could this be? But there's no point trying to ask it; if it's like the others, then it can't even speak." Hebimi replied as he took off after it. The Nomu noticed his glowing form, even with the light of the city and flames, and let out a screech that had Koharu hissing in pain.
"Stupid beast, only good for breaking your human constructions and making noise." She hissed as the beast continued to screech, seemingly not needing to breathe. To silence it, Hebimi took a breath. His spine shone brighter as he stoked his inner flame.
"Serpent's Fire Scales!" He bellowed as he breathed out a giant green fireball that raced towards the Nomu, which saw the attack coming and dodged it. The fireball headed towards a billboard, but Hebimi lifted his hand and clenched his fist, causing the fireball to explode into a volley of small fireballs that all managed to either fly around the billboard or turn around. All of them were heading straight for the now-surprising Nomu.
"I'm not letting you hurt anyone tonight!" Hebimi declared as, with a swipe to the side, his fireballs barrelled towards the Nomu, but the beast proved to be harder to defeat than he wished as its body didn't so much bent as it seemed to turn to rubber, elongating, squishing, bending and twisting around his multi-directional attack to avoid the worse of it, leaving only couple fireballs to hit their mack.
Hebimi frowned while Koharu let out an annoyed hiss when the burns and impact of those 2 blows didn't so much as slow the beast down as it continued to run, wreaking anything it could. Now that the monster had exposed at least one of its quirks, it used it to turn its arms into large blunt weapons and smash and crush things outside of reach, only adding to the destruction.
"It's not going to make this easy, but I'm not about to give up so easily either!" Hebimi declared as the beast cleared a jump from one side of the street to the other, the distance of an entire street below not stopping it. Hebimi wasn't sure he could make the jump, but a suggestion from Koharu solved the problem. Again, he breathed, increasing his inner flames' power and pushing himself to run faster as he approached the roof's edge. He took as big a jump as possible when he got to it.
Hebimi soared over the edge, but he wouldn't be able to get all the way. Leaning forward, he fired off a stream of fire toward the street below. It was weak and not all that hot, but the force was enough to give him that extra airtime by sending him higher up, giving him the height advantage to send out another fire scales towards the Nomu.
Again, it tried to evade, but Hebimi was wise to its tricks and kept back three of the fireballs. When it evaded the rest, those three smashed into its chest, one after the other, sending it tumbling off the roof, smacking a streetlight before crashing into the sidewalk. But even that didn't slow it down.
"What the heck?" Hebimi asked as he could see the burns lingering. He could bet that this Nomu didn't have super regeneration, and yet it was insistent on escaping. Only now, while at street level, it started targeting windows, cars, and everything else people left in a hurry.
"Is it just me, or is this a quieter part of town?" Koharu's question brought up a good point. Jumping down to the street level to give chase, Hebimi noted that unlike where he had been, which had been chaos, things were much quieter, with the bulk of the fighting happening in the distance.
This was getting weirder by the minute, but he couldn't just make assumptions; Ryukyu always kept an eye out for details, and Endeavour made it clear a pro needed to be aware of everything happening. "Todoroki, can you hear me?"
"Call me Shoto on the line, Hebimi. Did you defeat the Nomu?" Hebimi wondered why Todoroki chose his name for his hero name, but that wasn't his business, nor was this the right time to ask.
"No, it's still running from me. Are the other Nomus acting like this? Are they trying to just cause trouble, I mean?" Hebimi asked, keeping the chase even as the Nomu let out another screech and smashed into a wall. Then, as if it were a lagging game, it started climbing it, its rubber limbs stretching out to any holds it could and pulling it up.
"No, they seem to be sticking to their areas to cause trouble. Yours seems to be the exception." Todoroki replied as Hebimi spotted a car, a streetlight, and a balcony. He rapidly formed a means to get back to the rooftops to finish this chase before the Nomu forced him to chase it into another ward.
"I'm heading northwest through sector….17, I think? I'll call you after I've handled this in a few minutes." Hebimi replied as he rushed towards the parked car, using it as a springboard to grab onto the street light, swinging himself onto it, and using it to jump towards the balcony. After that, it was easy to get onto the roof and spot the Nomu…but shouldn't it have gotten further by now? It was a pretty fast one.
"I'll tell Endeavour," Todoroki confirmed before cutting the line. Hebimi was left wondering, but that would come later, as he was getting tired of this chase. He needed to handle this issue, call it in, and get back to the others.
The only issue was that he needed a means to put this beast down or slow it so he could capture it. He couldn't use any of his typical attacks, and he didn't want to cause property damage, but his Fire Scales had also proven to be ineffective. Or maybe it was the way he was using them that proved ineffective. That second one seemed to have done some damage.
"Serpent's Fire Scales!" Hebimi breathed out, creating another fireball, but instead of allowing it to explode, it flew forward before turning back to him. Hebimi left it hovering behind him as he created another one, which caused the first to hover to his left and the second to hover to his right. With the two attacks primed and ready, he sent the first one towards the Nomu, which reacted as he expected, evading the rain of fireballs. Still, before that first attack ended, he sent the second one in.
'Got you.' Hebimi thought that this had to be how he took it down; it had no means of escape.
Away from the action, Shigaraki and Kurogiri remained on the same rooftop where they had spoken to Stain, watching Hosu engulfed in chaos and fire. Though Shigaraki wasn't as happy as he could be as their best Nomu was just taken out by Endeavour, though it was metal as hell seeing the man burn its head to ass and leave its corpse to drop at his feet.
He didn't know why people didn't like Endeavour as much as that smiling fool, All Might. That was totally badass.
"Man, that Endeavour sure is something else. He's way too high a level boss for this level." Shigaraki grumbled, scratching at his neck as he wanted that one to rampage more. Should have known that piss-ant Stain would attract stronger bosses to fight him.
"You will not participate in the combat?" Kurogiri asked, finding it strange that his master was content to stand here and observe. "You could serve as a counter-balance to Endeavour."
"You crazy? I'm still healing after that bastard Stain stabbed me. It's why I brought those guys," Shigaraki countered, feeling his shoulder where the knife wound was hidden but slowly healing. He wished the League had a healer on their team, not for the first time.
He also recalled the conversation he had with his sensei before coming here. He wished to track down the Hero killer and kill the bastard for refusing his offer and injuring him like he was some level-one grunt. Sensei had 6 Nomu ready but only allowed him 4…well, he was down to just 3 now. "Speaking of, did one of the heroes take the bait?"
Kurogiri nodded. "Yes, I believe it was the same one that gave us such trouble at the USJ."
"For real?" Shigaraki had been hoping to catch Endeavour's attention; he had no idea that the insane pyro-boss Hebimi was here either. Seeing Kurogiri nod, he barked out in laughter. "Well, that's some real good luck, I'm hoping they take each other out, but that brat's a serious healer and DPS. Stain's current kit's just not optimized for him."
Oh, he had to go see that. Two of his biggest annoyances were spotting each other and fighting. He wondered if Stain's blades could cut through stone or if they would melt in that brat's lava flesh. Either way, he was in for a show.
Snapping his fingers, Kurogiri opened a portal for him to walk through, which his faithful right hand followed him through. The two vanished from their current rooftop to search for where Stain had holed up.
There was a bright flash of green flames overhead, followed by a wave of hot air and the unholy fusion screech of a rat, cat, and horse as Hebimi's attack managed to hit home. It deeply burned Nomu's flesh, sending the wounded creature tumbling into a dark alley. There, it crashed into some bins, bending and smashing up the cheap steel and spilling its smelly contents across the alley floor.
The Nomu whined, burns just being the beginning of its injuries as it also had broken bones and terrible cuts from the bent steel snapping and cutting into it. But it had a job to do; it was ordered to lead one of the heroes in this direction, and it had accomplished that, so it went limp as it awaited further orders. Sadly for the Nomu, when Hebimi jumped after it, he had no way of knowing that and, without hesitation, landed knee first into its neck, a thud quickly followed by a snap of bone as he shattered its spine, leaving it paralyzed from the neck down.
Jumping off the creature, Hebimi took a breath, his nose wrinkling as he picked up the alley's stench. "Of all the places." He sighed, but at least the beast was down—not dead, but it wouldn't be giving him any issues now.
Looking around, he was about to leave when he spotted something, but no one slumped against the wall. "Oh no…" Hebimi rushed over, seeing that the figure was a bloody mess; his face seemed to be the only thing that wasn't torn up as there was a large smear of red on the wall, leading down to him, painting a picture that this was no accident. They didn't dress like a civilian, but as a pro, his costume was cut up and covered in his blood, mainly around his chest, which greatly worried Hebimi the darkest spot seemed to be where the liver was, and another over the right side of his chest.
"Koharu." Hebimi didn't need to say more as Koharu slithered onto the pro. She immediately detected that he was cold—far colder than a human was supposed to be—but he had a pulse, weak as it was. As she inspected his wounds, Hebimi contacted Endeavor for emergency support.
It just took a few seconds for the number two hero to respond. "Hebimi, you've captured the Nomu?" Endeavor was to the point, which Hebimi both knew, expected, and greatly appreciated right now as he tore open his meager medical supplies, Hado-sempai's lessons on treating wounds playing in his head as he looked for his disinfectant.
"Yes, Endeavour. It's paralyzed behind me. I'm in an alleyway in sector 17, I can see a Denny's across the street, but that's not why I called. I need an ambulance." Hebimi replied, Koharu relaying every wound and cut she could find, putting the number at 6, most of which were terrible but not serious. The two to the gut and another to the lung were causing concern as both seemed to have been through and through.
"You're injured?" Endeavour asked, sounding a little surprised about it, which fair-it would take a lot to put Hebimi down for long.
"Not me, I have a hero here, he's slashed up badly and has already lost a lot of blood. He could be Stain's latest vict-"
"Behind you!" Koharu's scream was an explosion of noise in his head, but Hebimi trusted her with his life. He didn't question or hesitate. He acted based on her words, spinning around to face the threat, his body heating up as his hand shifted to stone and magma.
His assailant proved faster.
In a moment, a chipped blade cut into his stone, the hard material proving nearly useless against it. The masked attacker only grunted in surprise as they applied more force, their sword slicing clean through his hand, sending the severed limb flying to the side. However, it was now Hebimi's time to surprise them as where blood would have gone bursting out thanks to a significant artery being sliced; it was instead a jet of steam and lava droplets.
His assailant's eyes widened, seeing the danger for what it was and instantly pulling back, something Hebimi could use as while it hurt having his hand cut off, it was nothing like what someone would feel, giving him the clarity to take a breath. It sent a fireball towards his attacker, the man jumping over it, latching onto a fire escape above, only to need to let go when Midoriya sent another at him, forcing him back.
The first of the two fireballs had crashed into the trash, catching light and bathing the alley in his flames' warm, green flow. Allowing both parties to get a good look at the other.
"A shrine maiden? No, you're a child dressed like a heroine, aren't you, little girl?" the crouched villain asked. Glancing towards his blade for a moment, his gaze returned to Hebimi as he fully turned to face him. He put the wounded hero to his back so Koharu could work her magic, burning shut the worst of his wounds before he bled out, and then Midoriya could treat him.
The villain saw through his move. "I can't let you interfere, child. The fate of that fake is to die this night by my blade, his end being fittingly slow." Stain told him, expecting the child to flinch, to glare at him, or even retreat. He was down an arm, and his impressive quirk couldn't compensate for the sheer difference in their skills and speed.
Midoriya did none of them. Lifting his arm, he inspecting the wound. It wasn't just his hand missing but half his forearm as well. The sword, though chipped and old-looking, had done a fantastic job. It was a single, clean slash through stone and lava, though it wouldn't be enough, as Midoriya frowned. With a grunt and a burst of lava and stone, a new hand formed, good as new.
Only then did he speak. "Just like the reports. A figure with a red scarf and multiple blades across his body, notably a sword typically used in one hand. And with a fresh victim to boot. It's you, the hero killer, isn't it?" Midoriya asked him, raising both fists, shifting completely into his transformed state. Stain's sword could still cut him, but the man saw how his lava could get on him if he wasn't careful.
"You're the reason we came to Hosu, to put an end to your cruelty and murder. You say that man is meant to die tonight? Who are you to decide that?" He demanded, feeling angry, genuine, burning anger, as he just couldn't fathom why someone would take a life. And what was his about the man he was protecting being a fake? Why did that matter?
Izuku believed it didn't; no, he knew it didn't. Heating up, he made that clear to the serial killer: there was no fear in him, not when someone's life was on the line. "I'm going to save him, and I'm going to make sure you can't hurt anyone else, you hear me?"
Stain didn't immediately strike; instead, he studied him. He studied him to find a weakness to exploit, as he couldn't fight this kid as he did others, and he studied Hebimi's resolve. His fanatic crimson eyes looked into the duel infernos that were Hebimi's eyes, and he could see the rage in them, twisting and boiling. But it wasn't an impure wrath but a righteous one.
He liked what he saw, but that didn't mean he would spare his target. He would have finished him off earlier, but with the commotion, the League kicked up, his hunt had been delayed, and then this kid and his prior opponent came crashing it, forcing him to dive for cover.
Stain pointed his blade through him to the dying man that Koharu was doing her best to keep alive while her human bought her time. "Those eyes…they have a fire, a respectable inferno. Yes, you don't seem to be one of the fakes, but that won't stop me. Step aside, or you'll find that even children can become my targets."
"Target…is that all he is to you?" Hebimi asked, his words as soft as they could be in his transformed state, but they carried a thick undercurrent of heat. His core burned hotter than such callous phrasing. Did Stain think the same for everyone he hurt? Did he even consider the harm that he caused to those who loved his victims? He saw how Iida was after the news; he saw how his parents looked before he healed him.
Maybe he could heal the others; getting approval for all of them would be challenging, but Izuku would put in the work; he would beg if he had to…but couldn't help all of Stain's victims. He had killed 17 people already. People who had hopes, dreams, goals, friends, and loved ones, and yet he cut them like they were nothing. Like their lives and the people who loved them were nothing. And yet…and yet Stain could stand here and call them 'targets?'
If Midoriya still had teeth, they would be grinding together right now as he struggled to contain just how furious he was. The lava flowing between his scales glowed bright and burned hotter as he took a step forward. "You think you can just ask me to betray everything it means to be a hero and let you end him? Well, I won't. I won't back down, not to you or anyone!"
His left arm exploded, bits and pieces of stone and lava flying about as he shifted it into a flame thrower and aimed it down the alley toward Stain. "You want to kill him, then be ready to walk through hell!"
Whatever response Stain had was burned away by a spiral of flames
Endeavor was battling a second Nomu, which proved to be a greater annoyance than that first; it wasn't as strong as even before he arrived. The heroes were keeping it contained, but it processed an annoying quirk that allowed it to absorb and release their attacks, which, when paired with a must-be some sort of byproduct flame resistance, made it a challenge to deal a heavy enough blow to handle it.
As he had just fired off a Flashfire fist: Jetburn into its chest, the superheated strike had a much weaker effect but knocked it off balance. Where another hero smashed the damned monster with their steal bat, sending it tumbling into Shoto's ice.
What should have been a finishing move proved fruitless when, with that empty gaze, it let out another ear-piercing shriek before releasing the force of its hits, shattering enough of Shoto's ice that it escaped. Manuel helped, as someone had broken a fire hydrant, allowing him to send the high-pressure water towards the beast, which Todoroki could freeze. This allowed others the chance to try and take it down while it was restrained.
Endeavor wondered if they could use something sharp and just stab it through its head when his com went off. Reaching for it, Endeavour was greeted with Hebimi's voice. "Hebimi, you've captured the Nomu?"
Hebimi didn't waste time. "Yes, Endeavour. It's paralyzed behind me. I'm in an alleyway in sector 17, I can see a Denny's across the street, but that's not why I called. I need an ambulance."
Endeavour's brow creased as his frown grew. Sector 17 was supposed to be quiet, and no one else had even mentioned a petty robbery since this mess started.
"You're injured?" Endeavour asked, getting back into the action as he could fight and converse just fine.
"You're injured?" Endeavour asked, sounding a little surprised about it, which fair-it would take a lot to put Hebimi down for long. A pro called his name and tossed him their weapon, which happened to be a cone-shaped spear, but it seemed to be made from metal.
"Not me, I have a hero here, he's slashed up badly and has already lost a lot of blood. He could be Stain's latest vict-" Midoriya's response was cut.
"Hebimi? Hebimi, respond!" Endeavour called back but got no response as he growled. Hebimi's response had enough details for him to guess what happened. Heating up the spear, he charged the Nomu, impaling it and driving it into the ground with a crash, forming a crater. Again, it let out a pulse of energy, forcing Endeavour back, but at least now it had severe damage. The spear might have been dislodged, but now it had a gaping hole in its gut; its intestines would have been falling out if the wound hadn't been scorched shut.
"Dammit, heads up, we have a possible Stain sighting and downed hero in sector 17. Do we have anyone in the area that can respond?" Endeavour called out, both to the gathered heroes and to the lines.
"Midoriya?" Todoroki realized something that Iida had heard as he had stuck close to Manuel through the crisis. He had wished to hunt Stain but knew he wouldn't have caused this, nor could he ignore innocents in need.
"We don't have anyone in that area. They're all busy dealing with the villains rampaging or getting people to safety." Despatch reported that they might have seen an increase in pros, mainly coming in to help search and apprehend Stain. However, with the League's attack, one they were starting to suspect wasn't random, they found themselves too busy to spare extra hands.
Iida heard all that, and he could guess as to the reasons why, but more than that, he thought about his schoolmate fending off a serial killer who had already proven capable taken down fully trained, experienced pros. It didn't matter how skilled he was or that he won the Sports Festival; all it would take is one slip and-
No! He refused to let that happen, not while he still had his legs, so he rushed to Manuel. "Manuel! I can get there the fastest."
The pro looked at him like he was crazy. Iida had already admitted why he bothered with his offer and promised not to chase him. "It's too risky."
"Please, sir. Allow me the chance to help protect lives." Iida thought it was perhaps a poor choice of words, as they were already saving lives. Still, Manual could tell what he meant, and as much as it worried him, he couldn't deny that Iida was the fastest one here. Endeavor could go, but he was busy with this current threat. He couldn't just disengage…
Manuel sighed. "Fine, but don't do something crazy. You get there; you help them get the injured hero out of there." Iida nodded as he turned to race off, his quirk firing up.
"Shoto, go with him. You'll need the firepower. Don't get reckless." Endeavour called out; he had faith that the Iida son could handle things, but against a villain who had already killed heroes, it would make more sense to send additional help, just in case.
"Sure." Todoroki didn't fight him on this, running over to Iida, who quickly told him to get onto his back, as they would have been slower if Todoroki had tried to run with him. Todoroki felt weird but didn't fight as he climbed into his classmate's back. With that, Iida jetted off, Todoroki acting as his guide as he hadn't been as familiar with the sectors of Hosu as Endeavour had made Hebimi and Todoroki be.
"Could you explain why Midoriya is fighting Stain?" Iida asked as they raced through the largely empty streets; the heroes had done a good job of getting people to safety.
"Hebimi was chasing after a Nomu that we saw earlier. He must have spotted Stain in the act and moved to assist." Todoroki told him, which only made Iida worry all the more.
"We have to hurry then; there's no telling what that monster has done, " Iida said, though Todoroki wondered about that. Having fought Midoriya, he could tell that he wasn't a pushover, not a long shot.
Stain felt sweat fly off his face as he leaped out of the way of another attack, the heat of the dodged fireball only adding to his sweat. He could admit that this kid was strong but also intelligent, as the Hero Killer could easily outmatch him in speed, and should we get close, he could send another limb flying.
Hebimi knew this and made it his mission to keep him at bay with ranged attacks that could strike anywhere. A few had grazed the walls and fire escapes of the buildings between them, leaving the steel frames so hot that when Stain had grabbed one earlier to try and get close, he burned his hand.
He was plotting how to get closer when, through the smoke, he saw movement. A moment later, a dismembered arm came flying towards him, palm open to grab him. Stain was least surprised by this. 'This kid's got skills.' He concluded as he spotted that the limb was being propelled by fiery green rockets. But his surprise didn't slow him down as with a slash, it cut the limb in two between its two middle fingers, severing the cord controlling both.
Hebimi's next move did catch him off as the boy rushed him. Abandoning his range advantage with just one arm, he went on the offensive, his snake hair hissing as they shot towards Stain. At the same time, Hebimi charged up a blast from his opened jaws. Stain countered by kicking the kid's mouth shut, killing his charged attack while slashing through his hair. However, it didn't stop him as his other hand reached forward, grabbing Stain's shin, burning the man as he threw the villain further out, out of the alley, and into the open street.
Stain backflipped and landed on his feet, though he felt his left ankle felt burnt. A glance and shifting it around revealed that it wasn't too bad. 'This kid's a bad match-up for me.' Stain concluded as while he had got through the kid's arm and now hair extensions, his blade didn't have so much as a drop of blood on it, his transformation leaving him truly just rock and fire. One that could regenerate as Hebimi came out of the alley, his lost snake hair and arm regenerating through bubbling molten rock and fire.
"Keeping me out of the alley and away from the fake, are you?" Stain noted.
"Stop calling him that. He has a name." Hebimi ground back.
"And do you even know it?"
"I don't need to. I just know you're wrong for calling him a fake." His arm exploded once more, and another cannon formed, firing off a spiral of flames toward Stain, who could dodge it more effectively with a greater range of space.
"It's a shame then," Stain called out as Hebimi fired off a Fire Scales. The fireball exploded into a rain inferno, which Stain dashed through, his blade flashing upwards to dissipate fireballs before they hit him. But I won't stop my crusade for you, kid."
"You might be able to regenerate, but I've been watching you." Stain zoomed past him, seemingly heading towards the alley to finish the job. It was a false flag, one that tricked Hebimi into turning towards him, already preparing an attack. That played into his hands as Stain leaped over him and drove a blade through his chest and heart.
For the first time in the fight, Hebimi slowed as his core was pierced, his internal heat dropping as it leaked out of him like burning blood. "You fight well, and your rage is righteous…but this was the only real result."
"Midoriya!" Stain looked to the side just in time to take a kick to the face that sent him flying back; his grip on his sword hadn't loosened.
Having arrived right as Midoriya was impaled, Iida and Todoroki took a defensive position with Iida keeping his eye on Stain, who remained on his feet despite the speed and force of his attack. Todoroki focused on their wounded schoolmate, who had dropped to his knees.
"Hebimi? Are you okay?" Todoroki asked. "Iida, he's been stabbed…clean…though." His question stopped when he saw what had happened to Stain's blade. The villain hadn't released it, so he kept the handle and some of the sword, but most of it remained lodged in Hebimi's chest, the steel glowing as the heat had long since compromised its form.
"That…hurt. But it wasn't a smart idea, Stain," Hebimi breathed as the pieces of the blade still in him didn't fall out but were slowly pulled into his volcanic body. When the last of it was absorbed, his wound healed nearly instantly as he got up. "To plunge your sword into my core, the hottest part of my body."
"Thanks for coming, guys. Koharu is tending to the hero I found in the alley, but I'm unsure how much she can do for him." Hebimi gestured down the alley, which still had lingering green flames licking about its entrance, a sort of deterrence against entry.
"We'll just have to leave that to her while we handle this." Todoroki nodded. He had some medical supplies on him, but considering who they were up against, he doubted he had enough for the damage Stain had done.
'Stain,' Iida felt his breath increase, his heart beating faster. 'He tried to kill Midoriya…' He nearly screamed when he saw it.
'Focus, Iida. Don't lose yourself, don't let it consume you.' No, he couldn't let anger guide him again. That wasn't what his brother would want, it wasn't the example Midoriya set. "Midoriya, you'll remain our frontman; your quirk is a perfect counter for him. Todoroki, you keep range support, and I'll get the injured hero out of here."
The two nodded as Iida turned and ran towards the alley, Stain giving chase, having pulled out his knives, knowing that his sword was useless. "It's not wise to talk about plans when I can hear you."
"He did it because it doesn't matter what you hear; we'll stop you!" Todoroki declared as he fired off a blast of fire, which Midoriya matched.
