Outsider Chronicles: Black Dragon Slayer

Getting reborn into a world of Magic can be awesome or horrifying. Black Clover is somewhere in the middle. Unfortunately for me, I ended up as Asta. On the up side, I met a teacher who can drastically

So yeah, watching and enjoying Black Clover and I decided to do this. I really like how the powers work in the Anime, so I really want to play with them. I've also been rewatching Fairy Tail and, well, you know how that usually goes. I currently have no plans for it to be a full on crossover, other than in passing, but you know what I'm like. I also have a couple of ideas that are similar to this, including one with Asta as a God Slayer and another with the Outsider being an escapee from the Tower of Heaven who washes up in the Clover Kingdom and becomes a Magic Knight, which would be more of an actual crossover. Still working on those though, so have fun with this for now. Enjoy!

Chapter 1

When I died, the last thing I was expecting was to open my eyes again. However, thats exactly what happened. Of course, I wasn't in the same place as I closed them, nor was I in the same body. In fact, I was in the body of a baby. Yay me.

As for my new location, well, lets just say I might be in trouble. Why? Well, the world I've been reborn into was one of magic, demons and insanely powerful Wizards with a bad habit of destroying entire towns...well, almost. Yep, I've been reborn into the world of Black Clover! What? Did you expect me to say Fairy Tail? That'd be fun too, but not today.

Unfortunately for me, it didn't take me long to realize that, while I like Black Clover and the idea of using Magic is fucking awesome, I wouldn't have the chance because I'd been reborn as fucking Asta. Fuck my life.

So yeah, my childhood wasn't really that different from canon Asta's. Spend time with the other orphans, train and work on making sure I was strong enough to actually be able to do stuff in the future. Honestly though, I wasn't entirely sure if I'd even be able to do much in the future. True, I could gain the Five Leaf Grimoire like Asta did, but those went to compatible users and, being as I was very different to Asta, I wasn't sure if I would be compatible enough to use it.

It was that thought that led to me being distracted enough that I ended up stumbling on the one who completely threw everything I thought I knew out the window.

On that day, I was on my way to my normal training ground, intending to blow off some steam after a particularly nasty encounter with one of the local 'nobles'. They weren't technically nobles like those who lived in the Noble Realm, but they were local landowners and distantly related to the actual noble families, so naturally looked down on everyone else. Somehow, the idiot had found out that I didn't have any magic and, being the stuck up brat that he was, had started taunting me over it. As usual, I had completely ignored him, but that didn't mean that some of what he said had not struck a chord.

While I didn't give a shit what the idiot thought about me, he had brought up a good point. Without Magic, I was practically unemployable. No matter how strong or skilled I was, the fact remained that virtually every job required the use of Magic to one degree or another. That meant that there was a very good chance that I wouldn't be able to find work when I grew up, meaning that I was fucked.

"Arghhh, this is so fucking annoying!" I groaned, "I have to rely on a possibility that might not even be possible to even survive in the future? God damn it, I fucking hate uncertainties like th..AHHHHHHHHH!"

I was cut off mid rant as I put down my foot and found myself tipping forwards as it vanished down a very well hidden hole in the ground. A moment later, after a few moments of panicked flailing, the rest of me followed, sending me plummeting down a deep pit.

WHUMP!

"Owwww, that hurt," I groaned as I pushed myself to my feet, "Where am I?"

I looked around. I was in what appeared to be an underground tunnel that stretched in both directions and quickly vanished into the darkness.

"Well thats just great," I muttered as I looked up at the hole I'd fallen through, which was much too high up to reach, "What do I do now?"

I looked around again, then sniffed the air.

"Lets see, the air that way smells fresher," I muttered, "That'll do."

I started walking in the direction of the fresh air I could smell. After all, as Gandalf once said, if you're lost underground, just follow your nose.

I quickly lost track of time as I made my way through the darkness, but as I continued down the path, the tunnel began to lighten it eventually opened out into a truly massive cavern with a number of gleaming stalagmites and tites and walls that sparkled in the light that leaked through a hole in the ceiling and reflected of what, at first glance, appeared to be a vast pile of black gemstones. For some reason, the cavern smelt like fresh rain mixed with the heavy scent of an incoming storm front.

My eyes wide in awe, I slowly made my way through the cave until I reached the black mound. I could feel the weight in the air pressing down on me in a way I'd never experienced before.

"What is this place?" I muttered, "Some kind of heavy Mana zone?"

I examined the black mound and frowned.

"Thats weird," I muttered, "These look almost like…"

I was cut off as the mound shifted. Then, I stumbled back as it began to move, slowly uncoiling and revealing that I was right. The mound did look like scales because thats exactly what they were. I watched in terrified awe as the vast creature rolled over and stood, towering over me like a gleaming mountain. Two paws large enough to crush the church like it was made of toothpicks, each tipped with claws longer than I was tall, crashed down on either side of me as a head the size of a house loomed over me as the humongous Dragon stared down at me with golden eyes that could double as beach balls.

I'm not even remotely afraid to admit that I had a little accident, especially when it opened its mouth and revealed teeth larger than I was.

"Well now, what do we have here?" said the Dragon in a voice that went straight through me and made my bones vibrate, "Its been a long time since a Human has stumbled on my lair. Whats your name child?"

"A-asta," I said, "Please don't eat me…"

The Dragon looked surprised for a moment, then let out a bark of laughter that made the entire cave shake.

"Don't worry kid, theres no risk of that," he said, "I never did find Humans particularly appetizing and you would be naught but a morsel anyway."

"That...doesn't make me feel much better," I said.

The Dragon chuckled again as he settled back down and rested his chin on his knuckles

"Well then young Asta, my name is Veldora, the Storm Dragon," said the Dragon, "Tell me, what brings you to my home?"

I blinked as I realized that yes, the Dragon did indeed look like Veldora Tempest from Slime, then shoved the images that came with the name to one side. I'd consider the ramifications of that particular can of worms later.

"I'm lost," I said, "I was on my way to do some training and ended up falling down a hole into this cave system."

Veldora raised an eyebrow ridge.

"Training?" he asked, "At your age? Why?"

I twitched.

"W-well, I don't have any Magic, so the only thing I can really do is train my body," I said, "I want to be strong enough to be able to keep my friends at the Church safe in the future and that means I can't afford to slack off."

Veldora narrowed his eyes.

"No Magic?" he asked, "Interesting…"

He looked thoughtful for a moment, then looked back down at me.

"I have been sleeping here for a very long time child," he said, "Would you be willing to tell me some of what has happened in the outside world?"

I hesitated.

"I'm...not sure how much I can tell you," I said, "I'm just a commoner orphan, I don't exactly have access to that much history."

"Alright, then tell me what has happened recently," said Veldora.

"O-ok, I'll do my best," I said.

The next couple of hours was spent talking with Veldora, answering his questions as best I could. I actually had a fair amount of information on current events because people always love to gossip and few of them noticed the small orphan listening close by. Some of his questions didn't make much sense, but I answered them all to the best of my abilities.

"Hmm, very interesting," rumbled Veldora once I was done, "Very interesting indeed…"

He sighed, letting out a small spark of lightning that hit a nearby stalagmite and blew a chunk out of it.

"I've been sleeping here for a very long time it seems…"

He shifted slightly and winced.

"But my injuries have not healed in the least. Guess the others were right, hibernation wasn't enough to fix it. Oh well, too late now."

I frowned.

"You're injured?" I asked.

"In a way," said Veldora, "Its closer to a curse than an actual injury, but it is draining nonetheless. And old foe with a grudge and a lot of power managed to damage my Soul."

He sighed.

"Some of my comrades figured out a way to heal, but I was too proud to accept the help offered. Now it seems that I'm doomed to wither and die, leaving nothing to prove that I was ever here…"

He trailed off with a wistful look, then shook his head.

"Bah, I sound like an old man," he said, "I'm not dead yet."

I blinked a couple of times as I absorbed that little monologue, trying to figure out why that sounded so familiar, before I pushed it aside and got to my feet.

"Well, this has been interesting, but I've got to get home at some point," I said, "Can you tell me how to get out of here?"

Veldora shifted, revealing another tunnel that vanished upwards.

"This tunnel will take you back to the surface," he said, "I have to say, it was nice to have company for a change."

He looked thoughtful for a moment, then looked down at me with a strange expression.

"Say, you said that you wanted to get strong, right?" he asked.

"I...yes, I did," I said, "Why?"

Veldora's scaly lips turned up into a grin.

"As I said, I'm not going to last much longer," he said, "At most, I have maybe 20 years left before my body gives out. However, I'd like very much to leave some kind of mark on the world. Since I can't really go rampaging across the country in my state and I've long grown out of my destructive phase, I think I'd be better suited in passing on my Magic."

I stopped and stared up at him, wide eyed.

"W-what?!" I spluttered, "Are you saying…"

"Some of my comrades took in Human children to teach a very long time ago," he said, "I honestly never saw the need and found Igneel gushing over his brat rather annoying, but now...now I think I might be interested in giving it a try. So what do you say kid, fancy becoming a Dragon Slayer?"

"B-but I can't use Magic!" I protested, regardless of how much of me was screaming to jump at the chance.

"That won't be a problem," said Veldora, "I can give you some of mine and that will kick start your body's ability to take in and use Mana."

I stared at the Dragon, inwardly fighting a battle between squeeing at the idea of using Dragon Slayer Magic and worry at just what this would do to the timeline. Then I remembered my worries about the fact that I might not get the Anti-Magic Grimoire in the first place and the second part shut up. I grinned.

"Sure, sounds like fun!" I said.

Veldora's grin was as wide and toothy as my own.

"Excellent," he said.

And thats how I ended up training with a goddamn Dragon.

Over the next few years, I spent a lot of time in Veldora's cave getting the snot beaten out of me as he trained me, not only in his Magic, but also in fighting and some interesting Enchantment Magic.

Storm Dragon Slayer Magic was rather interesting as, unlike the other Dragon Slayer Magic, it wasn't limited to one element. Instead, it drew its power from the elements of the storm, that being lightning, wind and water, and its destructive power was, as was to be expected, immense. The mana requirements for its spells were nothing to sneeze at, but I had power to spare. Apparently gaining Magic by having a Dragon gift you with some of his own power resulted in a truly obscene amount of Magic, who knew.

As the years went by, my power and skills grew as I trained with Veldora and Yuno, although the latter didn't know about the former. Unfortunately, the great Dragon also got weaker and weaker as the injuries sustained from Archalogia began to further take their toll. Finally, when I was nine years old, just four years after I met Veldora, the great Dragon reached his limits.

KABOOM!

The sound of rock shattering under my fists echoed around the cavern as the shattered remnants of the boulder that was my target for todays lesson clattered to the ground around my feet. I let the swirling mass of water and lightning fade from around my fists as my mouth stretched up into a grin.

"WHOOO, FINALLY!" I cheered.

"Excellent work kid," said Veldora, "You've come a very long way."

I turned and grinned at the Dragon.

"All thanks to you, Old Man," I said, "So whats next?"

Veldora let out a soft (for him) chuckle and shook his head.

"Theres nothing else I can teach you," he said, "You are far from mastering your power of course, but that is a path you must tread yourself."

He shifted and let out a groan of pain as a few scales slipped from his flank. I frowned. His scales had long lost the lushous shine they'd had when I first met him and he'd been losing far more than seemed healthy lately.

"Are you alright?" I asked.

Veldora let out a weak bark of laughter.

"No Asta, I am not," he said, "I'm afraid I'm at my limit. If I'm not mistaken, I'll be dead within the next few weeks."

My eyes widened. I'd known he was weakened from his injuries, but I didn't think it was that bad! It was certainly a lot sooner than the estimate he'd given me when we first met.

"W-what?" I gasped, "No, there must be…"

"Ah, none of that child," said Veldora, "I've long made peace with my imminent demise. That is why I decided to teach you after all."

He smiled.

"I never thought teaching a Human would be so...fulfilling," he said, "I've lived a very long time, but these few short years have been some of the best of my life."

He lifted his head and looked around the cavern, which was now missing most of the stalagmites and tites that had filled it and had more than a few holes blasted in the floors and ceiling.

"Yes, you truly were an excellent student," he said, "You've learnt everything I had to teach in record time. I'm proud of you Asta."

I smiled weakly, trying desperately to suppress my tears. Over the past four years, I'd come to see the Storm Dragon as, perhaps not a Father, but definitely as a familial figure. Still, at least I got some warning, unlike the other Dragon Slayers.

"So, what now?" I asked once I was sure I wasn't about to start blubbering.

"Now? Now you go your own way," he said, "You are no longer the powerless little boy who fell into this place. You are a Dragon Slayer, the ruler of the Storm, the entire sky is not the limit for you."

He lent closer and smiled at me.

"Do what you will and let none stop you," he said, "Go make your own story and let everyone remember the Storm Dragon Slayer!"

I smiled back and held myself a bit taller. I didn't have quite the same reasons as Canon Asta and certainly didn't have the same gumption as him, but I had certainly inherited his dream of becoming the Wizard King, if only so I could do something about the abhorrent way those without noble blood were treated by those on top.

Veldora smiled again and shifted, reaching down so his claw was resting on my head.

"Good boy," he said, "But first, I have one last thing I need to do."

I was about to ask what that was, but before I could, there was an enormous flash and everything went black.

By the time I woke up, moonlight was leaking through the hole in the ceiling and I was alone. I sat up and looked around, but I already knew it was pointless. I couldn't detect any hint of Veldora, other than the rapidly fading remnants of his scent. I smiled sadly and put a hand on my chest.

"Thank you Teacher," I whispered, not sure if he could hear me or not from wherever his Soul was now.

I took a deep breath and scrubbed at my eyes, then stood and lifted off the ground with a faint gust of wind. With barely a thought, I flew out of the hole in the ceiling and angled in the direction of home.

I was flying over the village square when a pained cry reached my ears. I paused and looked down, only to find my Dragon blood starting to boil at the sight of Yuno being menaced by a smug looking tosser who was waving around Yuno's Magic Stone pendant. I'd wondered when this would happen, but now was as good a time as any.

I flipped in the air and rocketed down towards the mugging, sparking clouds forming around my hands as I did.

"Storm Dragons Iron Fist!"

My fist slammed into the unsuspecting thugs face, sending him flying down the street as I snagged Yunos necklace with my other hand and landed lightly in front of my friend, who looked rather startled from my sudden entrance.

"Hey Yuno, I think you dropped this," I said, handing him the necklace.

"Um, thanks?" said the wind user, then shook his head, "Where have you been Asta? We were all worried!"

I let out an awkward cough and rubbed the back of my head.

"Sorry, I was training and lost track of time," I said, "So, what was…"

I spun around and deflected a shard of ice from the thug and fixed the man with a glare as he stumbled to his feet, a murderous expression on his face.

"How DARE you!" he snarled, "You pathetic vermin should know your place!"

He pulled out his Grimoire and I tensed as I felt the Mana in the air begin to increase.

"Ice Magic: Shredding Ice Storm!" roared the irate thug, firing a swirling mass of razor sharp icicles at me.

"ASTA, RUN!" shouted Yuno.

Fun fact about Storm Dragon Slayer Magic. Unlike the other types, I wasn't limited to just one element. I was able to consume all of the elements that made up a storm, those being Lightning, Wind and Water. I could also eat the concept of 'storm', which meant that if I was caught in a blizzard or thunderstorm I could eat the storm itself for a truly massive charge. And yes, that is as bullshit as it sounds, but no more than Sting being able to eat anything white.

With that in mind, is it any wonder that I wasn't in the least bit worried about this idiot?

I grinned, opened my mouth as the whirling mass of ice bore down on me and inhaled. Immediately, the spell began to lose cohesion as it was sucked down my gullet and within seconds, the last of it had vanished, leaving both Yuno and the thug gaping as I swallowed, belched and patted my stomach.

"Ah, I needed that," I said, "Thanks man, I missed dinner.

"I...you...what are you!?" he shrieked.

I grinned a Dragon Slayer grin and slammed my fists together.

"Me? I'm just a worthless orphen from a back end town," I said, "Now let me show you what this worthless orphen can do."

I inhaled, feeling my Magic gather in my lungs as they expanded past what was Humanly possible, then clasped my hands in front of my mouth and exhaled.

"Storm Dragons ROAR!"

An enormous vortex of black cloud full of sparking lightning erupted from my mouth and slammed into the thug before he could do anything, blasting him down the street and into the sky with a rather unmanly scream.

I let up on the attack after a second and let out a sigh as the last of the gathered Mana left my lungs in a faint cloud, before turning and grinning at a gaping Yuno.

"I...you...what was THAT?!" he gasped eventually.

"That was Dragon Slayer Magic," I said, my grin widened as Yuno mouthed the words 'Dragon Slayer' with a look of shock on his face, before my grin vanished, "Are you OK?"

Yuno blinked in confusion, then shook of his surprise and smiled.

"Y-yeah, I'm fine," he said, "He didn't really hurt me."

I smiled.

"Well, thats something at least," I said, "Still, people like that...its sickening that people like us can be targeted simply because we're seen as 'lesser'. Hell, its sickening that we're seen as lesser in the first place, simply because of where we live."

Yuno snorted.

"Yeah, but what can we do about it?" he asked, "I mean, we're just orphans from the Forsaken Land. No ones going to listen to us."

"Maybe not, but we don't have to remain 'just orphans'," I said, "We both have a lot of power. Why don't we put it to use in the future?"

Yuno cocked his head on one side.

"What do you have in mind?" he asked.

I grinned.

"Well, if we want to change things, we need the power to do it," I said, "So I'm gonna aim for the top. I'm gonna be the Wizard King!"

Yuno stared at me for a moment, then grinned.

"Thats...one hell of a dream," he said, "Still, you have a point."

He held up a hand and a small twister appeared above his palm.

"I'm not as strong as you, but I have no intention of being left behind," he said, "I'll be the Wizard King to!"

My grin widened as I held out my hand, a twister forming around it. Yuno looked surprised for a moment, then grinned again and took the profored hand, his wind mixing with mine.

"In that case, lets head for the top together," I said.

Yuno nodded.

"Together," he said and our wind erupted, mixing together as it vanished into the darkness.

And I think I'll leave it there. I had a bit more in mind, but ending on a scene like that, rather than the comedy scene I had in mind makes for a punchier opening.

I have to admit, I'm not entirely happy with some parts of this, but it all holds together alright, so it'll do.

Yes, Veldora is somewhat based on the one from Slime, but hes obviously not the same one. Also, this isn't in the past, instead the events of Black Clover would start at about the same time as the Fairy Tail storyline. Thats not likely to be relevant for a LOOOOOOONG time, if ever, though.

Yeah, Storm Dragon Slayer Magic is slightly broken. However, in exchange for having a wide variety of things to nom on, the spells are more Mana intensive and he doesn't get as much power from eating any of his elements as the other Slayers do.

And with that, I think I'm done. Don't forget to leave a review on the way out!
