Genre: Adventure, Action, Friendship, and NO ROMANCE

Summary: Destiny always has a unique way of leading each person to reach the peak, but not all humans can reach that peak even though fate has shown the way. Zen'in Maki never thought she would be thrown into another world when she felt death would come to her. However, is it just a coincidence? Or is it the Destiny of the Universe that will guide her?

Chapter 8: Water Seven

—OoOoO—

Maki's daily life on the ship wasn't far different from a normal day in her world. She continued to exercise and train despite having no one to spar with. She woke up at five and started the day by doing cardio to increase her stamina and endurance. But since the Going Merry was a small ship with no gym equipment, Maki decided to make up for it by swimming in the ocean for two hours.

After that, she rested for an hour before continuing her training in powerlifting, squats, and such. In this case, Maki borrowed Zoro's equipment. She used a barbell that she estimated to be about six tons. Maki was initially a little doubtful whether she could lift such a heavy weight. The reason was that the heaviest weight she had ever lifted before getting the zero-cursed energy body was less than two tons. However, she managed to lift Zoro's barbell without any problems.

Overall, she swam in the sea for two hours starting at five in the morning, rested for a while, and then did training for powerlifting, squad, and such. The exercise ended with a thousand swings of the six-ton barbell like a sword, with all the plates placed at the end. This one she imitated from Zoro's daily routine.

Some might think that Maki could grow big muscles with that training portion. However, a unique fact was that Maki's muscles never grew like those of a bodybuilder, no matter how hard she trained. Her muscles were always in top shape to fight using high mobility, agility, and strength.

"Luffy, can you lend me a hand for a moment?" asked the bespectacled girl.

"Yeah?"

"You're a rubber man, aren't you? Any form of blow won't work on you. Can I give it a try?"

Luffy was a little confused by Maki's question. He tilted his head while adjusting his straw hat.

"Fine. You can do that. But why?"

"I just wanted to confirm something."

Luffy still didn't understand Maki's goal but was interested in what Maki wanted to do. Likewise, the other crew members watched curiously.

Maki rolled up her t-shirt's sleeves to her shoulders. Her fair skin seemed to glow under the sunlight. Maki took a stance and pulled her right fist back. With all her might, she hit Luffy's head.

The blow landed roughly on Luffy's head. However, as expected, it did no damage to the boy. In fact, his head was elastically thrown back tens of metres and made a unique sound like stretching rubber.

And by Hooke's law, Luffy's head, which was thrown with his elongated neck, returned to its original place.

Maki, who witnessed that, didn't show a surprised expression. She had already seen Luffy's abilities and expected that much. However, the experiments continued.

"Now, hit me as hard as you can."

Luffy was shocked, as were the other members who heard it.

"Seriously?" asked Luffy.

Before Maki answered, Nami interrupted first.

"Wait, Maki, what do you really want to do?"

This question represents all members of the Straw Hat Pirates.

"Something has been bothering me since seeing Luffy fought Enel. And now I wanna confirm it," replied Maki.

Meanwhile, in another corner of the ship, Ussop, standing and leaning against a wooden wall, looked at Maki curiously. Because he couldn't draw a conclusion, he tried asking Zoro who was beside him.

"What do you think, Zoro? Is there really something strange about Luffy?"

Zoro was the first crew member Luffy recruited. If there was anyone who knew Luffy more than anything, it should be Zoro. However, the answer that came from his mouth didn't satisfy Ussop.

"Who knows? I just thought his power was rubber. But whatever Maki thought, it wouldn't hurt to listen. After all, she has a high battle IQ and was also the first to realise Enel's weakness."

Ussop didn't participate in the fight against Enel. He was immediately knocked out when Enel visited the ship and only contributed to the rescue mission of the girls and fighting the man armed with the balls.

However, from what he heard, Maki made a considerable contribution. She defeated two of Enel's executives, discovered the method to attack Enel, and even caused significant damage to the man. Although in the end, Maki collapsed after being hit by an attack that flattened most of the forest behind the ruins.

At first glance, you wouldn't expect a girl like Maki to be such a strong fighter. Her clear skin, round glasses, flat bangs, and ponytail made her appearance more suited for a nerd. However, when she pulled her long sleeves and displayed her firm and strong muscles, you would clearly see that Maki was the embodiment of a perfect soldier.

"If Maki had fought against Aokiji at that time, do you think we could have won?" Ussop said.

"I can't say for sure. But honestly, I don't think we'll win. Even though he's a logia user and Enel's abilities are more deadly, I feel Aokiji's stronger."

After they parachuted from Sky Island, they stopped briefly at an archipelago called Long Ring Long Land. They did nothing special other than restock supplies. However, they unexpectedly met an Admiral from the Navy nicknamed Aokiji.

Long story short, they met a group of strange pirates and played a game of Davy Back Fight. Maki participated in the game, and the Straw Hat Pirates won it by a narrow margin. However, Maki continued to explore the island alone while Aokiji intercepted her group on their way back to the house of the person they were visiting.

That was why Maki didn't fight against Aokiji while the Admiral slaughtered her friends.

Back to Maki and Luffy's activities. The rubber boy hit Maki with all his strength, accompanied by shouts of 'Gomu gomu no pistol'. Maki took the blow with her nose, or at least, she deliberately let it hit her.

Normally, a blow from Luffy's punch could send a person flying several metres if hit hard. But Maki held it well so that her stance didn't get broken. However, the force exerted by Luffy's punch and the resilience of Maki's stance caused the wooden floor to crack and ultimately crumble, causing Maki to fall into the ship's hull.

Ussop, who saw it, immediately screamed hysterically.

"No! Not that again! How many times must this ship be destroyed because of your recklessness?!"

Ussop was initially relieved because he thought that Maki was quite normal. However, he had to swallow it back after seeing that the girl was a barbarian who sometimes didn't think twice about her training.

Luffy chuckled at Ussop's scream.

"Hahaha! Sorry Sorry."

The boy just smiled and stretched his elastic hands down to help Maki up.

"Sorry, I didn't think the floor would break," said Maki after climbing onto the deck, "Should I've just let myself get dragged by Luffy's punch?"

"No, never mind. Even if it's like that, I'm sure it was the railing that would be destroyed," replied Ussop, arching his eyebrows.

Maki and Luffy locked their mouths tightly because they couldn't reply to Ussop's complaint. However, Nami approached Maki while handing over the glasses that the girl left before she let Luffy hit her in the face.

"So, what do you want to achieve actually?" Nami asked.

Maki didn't answer right away. She put on her round glasses first and adjusted them to make them comfortable.

"First of all, Luffy, is your power really a rubber? I mean, is it really pure rubber, or are there other mixtures?"

Luffy raised his eyebrows when he heard the question.

"What do you mean? Shanks said the devil fruit I ate then was Gomu Gomu no Mi. It's a rubber."

"No matter what it is, devil fruit only provides one type of power," said Robin, who joined the conversation, "If there's any other effect, it's a derivative of the main power of the devil fruit. So, it shouldn't deviate from its basic principles."

"That's the same as Enel could generate heat from his electrical power, right?" Nami chimed in.

Robin nodded at the response. Meanwhile, Maki showed a thinking pose with her hand pinching her chin.

"So, what do you really think, Maki-chan?" Sanji asked while exhaling his cigarette smoke into the sky.

"Fine. I'll start from the oddities I found."

Maki paused her words for a moment to prepare the explanation, which might take some time. With a slow exhale, she began the session.

"When I hit Luffy, my punch felt like it hit a boneless object that didn't have any structure. It was like I hit a balloon filled with water. Only Luffy won't break, no matter how hard I hit him. On the contrary, with his extraordinary elasticity, Luffy's head was pushed back to reduce the effect of my blow. I'm not sure, but it seems like your body also naturally spreads the kinetic energy from my blows throughout your body."

Almost everyone tilted their heads in confusion with Maki's explanation. However, Sanji and Robin caught the gist of the message even though several terms they weren't familiar with were included. Maki realised that, and she tried to find alternatives to provide a simpler picture.

"In defence, his body acts like rubber. However, if it's just ordinary rubber, there's a saturation point where your elasticity can't withstand the pressure applied. That's why I think there's something else to your power. In my world, there's a unique phenomenon to the laws of physics called Non-Newtonian Fluid."

Maki paused for a moment to take a breath.

"Put it simply, it's a liquid with properties that aren't like liquids. When you apply a sudden, unconcentrated force, the liquid will behave like a solid object and even tend to be elastic, depending on the density of the liquid. In fact, it can be as if you were running on water if you had a non-Newtonian fluid."

Luffy didn't understand what Maki was discussing, nor did Ussop and Chopper. However, their eyes lit up when they heard the term "running on water". They were about to respond to that statement, but Sanji stretched out his left hand to signal them to be quiet.

"A liquid that makes you feel like you can run on water. Is that the same liquid as a mixture of water and cornstarch?"

"Oh, you know?" asked the girl in the ponytail.

"I played around with it when I was a kid. But old man Zeff would scold me for wasting food."

Maki was impressed by Sanji's knowledge. He was indeed a very perverted man, but his brain power was really great, and it seemed that the man with curly eyebrows had extensive knowledge.

Maki was about to conclude on Luffy's defensive abilities, but Zoro, who was impatient, suggested his thoughts first.

"So, what you're saying is, if it's just normal rubber ability, Luffy's body has certain limits when taking a strong blow. However, because his body also has the same properties as this strange liquid thingy, the energy from the blow that Luffy receives is distributed throughout his body to reduce the burden on the elasticity of his rubber body. Because of that, attacks from blunt objects really have no impact on him."

Maki nodded at that conclusion. Zoro didn't have as broad an insight as Sanji and Robin, but if he ignored Maki's complicated terms and replaced them with simpler examples, Zoro could draw the correct conclusions. After all, his experience in fighting made it easier for him to understand the characteristics of Luffy's power Maki was trying to explain.

"But not only that. In fact, this inconsistency appears if you compare Luffy's defensive phase with his attacking phase," said Maki.

Those who heard it couldn't help but have to listen again patiently to the explanation that Maki was about to convey. They just hoped it wouldn't be long.

"As I explained before. With his two characteristics, Luffy's punches shouldn't do any significant damage. In fact, it'd make more sense if all of his attacks were based on whips rather than punches. But as you saw when Luffy hit me, the damage was huge."

'It didn't hurt you at all, tho?' Ussop thought.

Maki looked at her companions in this world one by one to make sure they were still on track. Especially Luffy, who was the main topic at the moment.

"Actually, it's not just this. When you decomposed Enel's ball of concentrated electrons, the scattered electrons should fall to the surface due to the potential difference in the electric charge and produce a flash of lightning. But that's not what happened."

Maki took a deep breath and exhaled.

"So, Luffy, what were you thinking about when you hit your target?"

Luffy was silent for a moment. He showed a complicated expression, even though everyone agreed that the guy had none of Maki's complicated explanations that his brain could digest.

"Well, I didn't think of anything. When I hit something, I want my punch to be as strong as possible. Honestly, I don't understand what you're saying. So, can you repeat that, Maki?"

Maki just showed a facepalm at Luffy's reaction, who wasn't listening. The boy's serious expression was just a mask covering his brain that couldn't follow Maki's conversation. The girl in the ponytail sighed and adjusted her glasses.

"Nah, forget that. If you don't think there's a problem, I guess that's how it is."

However, Luffy took it personally. He immediately lunged at Maki.

"Come on, explain it to me. I promise I'll listen this time."

"No," replied the girl.

"I'll lend you my hat for a day if you explain again."

"I'm not interested in that."

"What about meat? I'll give you some of my meat… or ask Zoro to give his share to you."

Zoro, whose name was suddenly touched, felt called.

"Why should I give her my share? Use your meat, you idiot."

However, ignoring the scolding, Maki also replied while looking at Sanji.

"Well, if it's meat or other foods, Sanji will gladly give me an extra portion. Can I, Sanji?"

"Of course, Maki-chwan. Anything for you!"

Nami pinched Luffy's ear to prevent the boy from continuing to whine at Maki and drag him away.

Maki stared at the view that was part of everyday life on this ship. However, her brain couldn't stop thinking about Luffy's abilities.

'He subconsciously thought his rubber body was immune to attacks from blunt objects. But at the same time, he thought he could deal damage that matched the blows of others who didn't have a rubber body. If paramecia could change the user's biological structure so absolutely, something as inconsistent as that should be impossible.'

Maki looked up at the blue sky. The sea breeze that blew gently touched her face and brought calm to her mind.

'That's clearly not ordinary rubber, but the power of rubber that works according to the user's imagination? Or is it actually like a reality warper?'

Maki closed her eyes for a moment to absorb all the information in nature that was perceived by all her sharp senses. Her gaze then turned to Luffy, who was playing with Ussop and Chopper.

'If such a power really exists, this world's crazier than i think.'

—OoOoO—

Their journey continued as usual. Because the damage to their ship was getting worse and couldn't be repaired by normal means, they decided to look for a shipwright, and it would be better if they found a shipwright who could be recruited to join the crew.

On their journey, they met an old woman driving a sea train. It was a strange, alcoholic grandmother. However, the old fart gave them a map to Water Seven, an island known for having many shipwrights. But what caught Maki's attention wasn't that, but a train travelling on the sea, with its rails floating on the surface.

Maki used to think civilisation in this world was reset after whatever happened in the Void Century, or at least the ancient technologies were monopolised by the World Government. However, witnessing the existence of a sea train herself, Maki thought that civilisation in this world wasn't as far behind as Maki thought.

'Moreover, considering that the people of this world depend on maritime life, it's very natural that their marine technology is much more developed.'

The distance from when they met an old woman named Kokoro and Water Seven was close. It only took five hours of sailing until they reached their destination island. When they arrived at Water Seven, their tongues became numb, and they couldn't say a word because they were so amazed by the magnificent design of the island.

"Is this island for real?" Maki muttered.

An impatient Luffy rushed towards the goat's head at the front of their ship. The boy couldn't hide his bright smile while holding his straw hat blowing in the wind.

"This is so amazing!"

Their ship continued to move at a constant speed until it passed a sea gate. Basically, they didn't receive fierce treatment from local residents. They actually looked normal looking at a pirate ship. This gave Maki the impression that not all pirates were riotous groups. However, that also didn't mean the number of peace-loving pirates was also large.

That was why, without intending to start a dispute, local residents told the Straw Hat Pirates that there was a special place for pirates to dock at Water Seven.

"Okay, our purpose here is twofold. First, exchange the gold we got from Sky Island. Second, looking for a shipwright to repair the Going Merry," said Nami.

The girl had changed clothes and wore a dark blue shirt with a light blue tie loosely tied around her neck. With the mini skirt she chose, Nami created a semi-formal vibe to her outfit. Nami and several people, like Sanji and Robin, also changed their clothes.

Sanji still prioritised formal outfits, with an orange shirt without a tie and a black sleeveless vest covering him. The trouser was the same colour as the vest, so only a little of the impression changed. Meanwhile, Robin wore a black coat that showed off her curves with a length that reached her thighs, combined with boots of the same colour.

Maki also came out with a different look. She still wore the round glasses she got from Sky Island. However, she wore a black, long-sleeved t-shirt with light blue words 'Long Live' on the chest. She paired it with a black blazer that she didn't button. And for the final touch, Maki wore grey pants and black slip-ons. And, of course, it was all she borrowed from Nami.

'Somehow, I look like an office lady,' thought the girl.

"Maki, do you have any plans?"

Her thoughts were interrupted when Nami said her name.

"Well, I was planning on looking for a public library. Maybe I can find out some things," Maki replied with a high copium.

"Man, it sucks. I want to take you shopping after we finished exchanging gold."

"We can do it later…, or maybe tomorrow? It's not like this ship's reparation will be completed in just one day."

"Hm, I think you're right," replied Nami.

Maki didn't answer after reaching an agreement with Nami. She turned her gaze to Robin, giving a signal through her eyes to the woman. Robin initially didn't understand the gesture but realised what Maki meant.

"I'm sorry, but I can't accompany you. I'm more interested in exploring this island first. If you find a book you want to discuss with me, just say so, I'll help you later."

Maki was a little surprised by the rejection. She thought Robin was the type of person who wouldn't refuse an invitation to go to the library, but it seemed she was wrong. Or maybe she had misunderstood Robin from the start. The woman wasn't a bookworm because she was a loner with no friends or an introvert. Robin became a bookworm because she was very curious about something.

In other words, if the woman were in a new place, she would first explore the place to satisfy her curiosity.

—OoOoO—

In the end, Maki was left alone. Robin went with Sanji and Chopper to look around the island. Meanwhile, Luffy and Ussop accompanied Nami to exchange gold with her. Meanwhile, Zoro voluntarily offered himself to guard the ship.

Water Seven was a bigger foreign place than Maki had imagined, but finding the central library wasn't difficult. She had the mouth to ask to get to the building in less than an hour. However, the real problem started from there.

"None of the books are useful," muttered the girl.

Two hours had passed, and Maki spent it just checking each shelf after shelf and repeatedly checking the catalogue. However, not a single title was worthy of a clue.

"Most books here explain engineering and science related to marine and maritime affairs."

Maki buried her head on the table with the book she was reading. Piles of books she had finished reading were scattered on the same table. It wasn't like she had finished all the books. It was just that every time Maki discovered that the book didn't discuss something that might be a clue, she immediately abandoned it.

Maki tilted her head, letting her left cheek touch the book's surface. Her empty mind wandered everywhere, thinking about how she would get home and what she would do after returning to her world. However, Maki was lost in this world amidst the war in Shibuya. Maki didn't know how long it would take for her to return to her world, but she was sure that a lot had happened during that time.

'Satoru had been sealed, but we still have Yuta. So, there should still be hope. However, I must be prepared because the people I know may be gone, and the world has completely changed. Whatever it is, this world isn't a place for me to die. Before I can find my way home, I must become stronger to survive in this world first.'

Maki let out a long breath. She closed her eyes to reorganise her thoughts. However, her concentration was interrupted when she heard a strange voice approaching her.

"You seem to have a lot on your mind, Miss?"

It was a feminine and soft voice. Without turning around, Maki could guess the voice owner was an adult woman.

"I wonder how long you'll be watching me from the corner. I thought you were a strange woman who liked stalking others, but you also had guts. So, what do you want, milady?"

The words that came out of Maki's mouth might sound cruel. However, that was understandable because everyone would feel uncomfortable if they being stared secretly for hours. It was still good because Maki had patience, so she didn't approach the person directly and ask why she secretly stared at her for hours.

On the other hand, the woman was shocked by what she had just heard.

'She noticed it?'

Even though she was surprised, the woman didn't show it. In fact, she could cover it perfectly with her friendly smile.

"The name's Stussy. Well, I didn't mean it in a bad way. I find it amusing to see you running around looking for something. But I feel bad seeing you not in good spirits like now."

Even though Stussy showed a gentle smile and didn't show the slightest hostile gesture, her brain was racing to analyse the potential the girl was hiding. Stussy actually didn't want to overthink Maki. However, seeing Maki could realise that she was watching her made Stussy unable to underestimate the girl.

'I'm a CP0 agent, one of the best in my division. Even though I didn't intend to hide my presence completely in this library, I didn't expect her to just find out I was watching her. In fact, only a few people in the New World have that feat.'

"So, what?" Maki nonchalantly asked.

"Nothing. I just want to say hello because you look like you're having trouble. I'm a tourist and don't have many acquaintances in this place. That's why I'm interested in getting to know you."

Maki looked at Stussy closely and with a probing look. It wasn't like Maki could read minds or know other people's intentions. Even though her physical strength had increased crazily, Maki didn't have those kinds of Esper powers. However, it didn't take complicated logic to assume that the person who was constantly overseeing you was the person who had the potential to have hidden intentions towards you.

Maki sighed while closing her eyes. She adjusted her glasses before standing up. She tidied up the finished books and put them on the trolley beside the table.

"Are you leaving?" Stussy asked.

"Yeah."

"You're a cold girl, aren't you?"

"I know," said the girl in the ponytail briefly.

Maki didn't want to waste her energy on that woman. She didn't know her purpose, but Maki knew the woman was suspicious. Many possibilities could happen. It could be that the woman was a pick-up girl who was looking for her prey, or a mafia who was trying to deceive young girls, or maybe something more dangerous. There was nothing definite that could be drawn from.

What was clear was that, as a person used to living in big cities like Tokyo and Kyoto, Maki was very sensitive to suspicious people who always had such characteristics.

"You said that I was bored, right? Well, that's why I want to return to my friends' place," said Maki after cleaning everything up.

Maki paused her words for a moment and looked straight at the blonde woman.

"You're not some weirdo who would stalk me, are you? And I warn you about one thing. Even if you can hide your presence just now, don't think I won't notice if you're stalking me."

That was a harsh warning from Maki. The bespectacled girl drew the line so firmly that it left no room for Stussy to reason. Basically, Maki didn't care about anything that came out of Stussy's mouth because she had labelled the woman as strange and suspicious.

Even though she received rough treatment, Stussy didn't feel offended. She was a professional and experienced agent. She knew that not all her attempts always succeed. Dealing with a target who was difficult to approach, like Maki, was also not her first experience. After all, the girl wasn't her primary mission, so Stussy didn't intend to pursue her too far.

However, her memories of investigating Skypiea after she saw the Straw Hat group plunge from the sky suddenly came to mind.

'Zen'in Maki. The one who contributed most to overthrowing Enel besides Monkey D. Luffy. Most likely has Kenbunshoku Haki. Her name's not in the report on the upheaval in Arabasta. So, it seems she met and joined the Straw Hat Pirates on Jaya Island.'

Stussy smiled faintly as she watched Maki go towards the library door.

'My instincts as an agent and a fighter constantly ring when I'm around her. Maybe I should go to Jaya after this to get more information about you? However, I can't wait to meet you and get to know your personality more, Maki-chan."
