Episode 7: The Raptor 7
Captain's log: Stardate 58286.6 - The Vorlon Ambassador is still trying to persuade us to give up warp drive and switch to hyperspace jump-gates. As part of this, they have pointed the Federation to a world rich in Quantium 40 deposits. Since the Enterprise was in the area, I am sending a team of geologists, led by Commander Stonn in a raptor to investigate the planet.
Murasaki system - Raptor 7
Raptor 7 had just jumped into the system when the pilot, Ensign Grace Eight cried out: "Sir, a ship is decloaking right in front of us!"
"Evasive maneuvers Ensign," ordered the Vulcan Commander Stonn.
"Already on it sir," replied the model 8 Cylon as turned the wheel, attempting to make a hard turn. Unfortunately, she was unable to prevent their raptor from making a sideswiping collision with the black ship that had suddenly appeared before them. The raptor began spinning out of control.
"Blast it! Can't you stop this ship from spinning?" groused Doctor Leptus. He was a Tarquinian, one of the Vulcans who had rejected logic and in another timeline would have become a Romulan.
"I'm trying sir," replied Ensign Eight as she struggled with with the controls, attempting to stabilize the ship. "I'm going to have to bring us down to the planet."
With great difficulty, the Cylon pilot was able to bring the Raptor to a safe landing on the planet. After she shut the engines off, most of the crew let out a sigh of relief.
"Did anyone get a good look at that ship we hit?" asked Yeoman Smith, a Kobalian Human.
"I only caught glimpse of it. But it looked like big black spider to me," replied the Talosian geologist, Lieutenant Calix. "It was definitely malignant. My telepathy couldn't read it at all."
"Commander, our link with the collective has been broken!" exclaimed Chief Engineer 23 of Two. He had been a model 2 Cylon before he joined the Borg and had been assigned to this mission in case there where any problems with the geological survey equipment.
"It is likely that there is some element in the atmosphere that is interfering with your connection to the Borg collective," theorized Commander Stonn. "I hypothesize that the same factor is blocking our subspace connection with the Enterprise."
"So until we can get back, we're on our own?" said Doctor Leptus.
"It would appear so," confirmed Commander Stonn. "In the meantime, we should begin the geological survey while Lieutenant Commander Two evaluates the condition of the Raptor.
"Aye sir," chorused the crew as they gathered their equipment and began exiting the ship.
"You three survey the North, Ensign Calim and I will survey to the South," commanded Stonn, as he and the Medeusan geologist went South. The other team of geologists consisted of the Talosian geologist, Lieutenant Calix, the Kobalian Human, Yeoman Smith and the Cylon geologist, Ensign Donald Four.
The part of the planet they were on was shrouded in a thick fog, making visibility poor over even short distances. And they were able to find some rich Quantium 40 deposits. But Yeoman Smith's scream brought Commander Stonn and Ensign Calim running back to them. They arrived to find Lieutenant Calix dead, an enormous spear piercing his body.
Ston pulled out his tricorder and began scanning.
"There appear to be indigenous life forms in our vicinity," observed Stonn.
"They're all around us! I can feel their minds," explained Ensign Calim.
"Phasers on stun, let us use a wide dispersal pattern to frighten them off," commanded Ston. "Fire."
All four of them pulled out their phasers and aimed into the fog, firing.
"Got one!" exclaimed Ensign Calim, who was able to feel where to aim via telepathy.
"They appear to be in retreat," observed Stonn, as he scanned with his tricorder. "Let us return to the raptor."
"What about Calix's body?" asked Ensign Four. "We can't just leave him here!"
"Very well. I shall carry him back to the raptor," said Stonn, and he hefted the Talosian corpse onto his shoulder. Once they returned to the Raptor, Ston set the body down and stepped inside the raptor, where Lieutenant Commander 23 of Two, Ensign Eight and Doctor Leptus were trying to repair the raptor.
"Commander Two, report," commanded Ston.
"We are able to repair most of the damage," reported the Borg Chief Engineer. "However, the impact pierced our fuel tank and we lost most of our tilium. We have enough for a jump, once we reach orbit. But getting there is the problem. We only have enough fuel to lift five us into orbit."
"So how do we decide who stays and who goes?" asked Doctor Leptus. "Do we draw straws?"
"I shall be the one to make that determination," replied Stonn.
"Now, wait a minute! What gives you the right to decide who lives and who dies?" Demanded Doctor Leptus.
"I am in command," explained Stonn. "That gives me the right to make life or death decisions for the crew of this mission."
"As we going to have a funeral for Lieutenant Calix?" Asked Yeoman Smith.
"Our priority is to repair the raptor," replied Stonn. "The indigenous life forms make a funeral too dangerous to perform."
"I say we ought to pull out those Kobalian firearms," suggested Ensign Calim, the ones with explosive rounds designed to take out Cylon Centurions."
"That would be a Prime directive violation, albeit a minor one," countered Stonn. "This is their planet. We are invaders here. No. Phasers will be enough to drive them off if they resume their attack."
"What did they look like?" Asked Doctor Leptus.
"They were approximately 3 meters in height, humanoid, dressed in furs," reported Ensign Four. "They appear to be armed with stone age weaponry."
"I still think we should hold a funeral for Calix," groused Doctor Leptus. "It's the decent thing to do."
"Very well, I will allow a brief ceremony," allowed Stonn. "Ensigns Calim and Four will perform take care of the burial. Yeoman Smith and I will guard them while they dig."
After they had dug a grave for the Talosian geologist and placed his body in it, Yeoman Smith said to Stonn: "Aren't you going to say a few words?"
"There is little point in doing so," replied Stonn. "The Lieutenant can no longer hear our words."
"We can," countered Ensign Calim. "We should at least say something."
"Very well," said Commander Stonn. "Here lies Lieutenant Calix, who came from Talos IV to die on this world. He was our senior geologist and he will be missed."
"So say we all!" replied Yeoman Smith, followed by Ensign Four.
Suddenly a spear came flying out of the fog, piercing all the way through Yeoman Smith's abdomen!
"We are under attack. Phasers," commanded Stonn, as he drew his phaser. "Aim a wide dispersal pattern. We need to frighten them off.
The Vulcan, Medusean and Cylon fired their phasers into the fog on three sides of their group. But the spears kept flying at them.
"Retreat back to the raptor," commanded Stonn.
As the group ran back to the raptor, another spear took out Ensign Four.
"Is the ship repaired?" Asked Stonn, as they entered the raptor.
"All systems are functional," replied Chief Engineer 23 of Two.
"Then Proceed with lift off," commanded Ston.
"Aye sir," replied Ensign Eight, as she started the engines.
"Looks like you didn't have to decide who lives and who dies after all," observed Doctor Leptus, as the ship rose through the atmosphere.
"Yet if we had not performed that illogical memorial to the dead, one of the dead might have gone up here in my place," mused Stonn.
"Aahhh! Much better!" Cooed the Borg, as his connection to the Borg Collective was restored once they reached space.
"Prepare to jump back to Enterprise," Commanded Stonn.
"Aye sir. Calculating Jump coordinates," replied Chief Engineer 23 of Two. "Coordinates calculated."
"Jumping in 3,2,1 Jump!" Said Ensign Eight before jumping the raptor back to the Enterprise.
Captain's log: Stardate 58287.7 - Although the world the Vorlons sent us too is rich in Quantium 40, the presence of a hostile indigenous population precludes us from establishing a mining colony there.
