"Asher," Stewart yelled, seeing Asher fall.
"Fuck," Asher swore as he dangled from his harness over the water.
"Don't panic," Stewart called, "stay as still as possible.
"I can't move my left arm," Asher shouted back trying to take a hold of the line connecting his harness to the safety system.
"Hold on Asher," Stewart said, "we're calling the rescue crew. I can't pull you back, that beam cracked."
Steward stared at the large crack in the iron beam unsure why it had opened up.
"Allison, Everly," Asher yelled.
"You'll see them tonight," Stewart said.
"If I don't make it, tell them I love them," Asher shouted, "tell Allie I love her and tell Ev that daddy will always be there for her."
"You will see them," Stewart said, "Asher stay calm. Don't panic."
"I'm bleeding," Asher yelled.
"Help is coming," Stewart assured, "Asher you will make it out of this."
Stewart and the rest of the crew tried to keep Asher calm.
The rescue crew arrived to find the young man dangling over the water. They quickly stabilized the beams and the rescue workers made their way towards Asher. They lowered him to a boat below.
When they loaded him in the ambulance Asher continued to panic.
"I can't move my arm," Asher yelled, "and my feet are tingling."
The paramedic cut the safety harness. They discovered a large cut on his side.
"Start a large bore IV and give fluids," Ben called, "wait this is Hunt's son in law."
"Dr Hunt," a young paramedic asked, "which one?"
"Owen Hunt," Ben replied, "Asher isn't it?"
"Yes," Asher replied.
"Your name," Ben said.
Asher replied, "Asher Blouin. I want to go to Grey Sloan."
"Only place we will take you," Ben assured, "Owen and Teddy will be standing by for you."
"Allison," Asher said, "I need to see Allison."
"We will call your girlfriend," Ben agreed, "when you get to the hospital."
"Fiance," Asher said, "we're engaged."
"Congratulations," Ben smiled, "when?"
"Three months ago," Asher replied.
"Move people," Owen bellowed, "incoming trauma clear trauma one. 20 year old male fell from a beam on a job site and was suspended."
They waited in the ambulance bay. Owen watched as his residents dashed to meet the ambulance.
"Asher," Owen gasped.
"Allie," Asher whispered.
"I'll call her," Owen said, "she's home with Ev today."
"Tell Everly she'll always be my princess," Asher said.
"Not how this works," Owen replied.
"I'm bleeding and I can't feel my toes," Asher said, "I can't move my arm."
"KEPNER," Owen bellowed, "GET ME KEPNER NOW!"
"Owen," Teddy said, running to join him in the trauma room.
"It's Asher," Owen said.
"I'll call Allie," Teddy said.
"Shotgun him," Owen bellowed.
"Dr Hunt," an intern asked.
"He's our son in law," Teddy said, "engaged to our youngest."
"I need his history," the intern said, "Dr Altman."
"Asher Blouin, Age 20," Teddy replied, "April 15 2015. He's an electrical apprentice."
"His family," the resident asked.
"Fiance's name is Allison Altman-Hunt my youngest," Teddy replied, "two year old daughter named Everly. I'll call Allison then send Dr Grace to get her."
Teddy stepped out and called Allison.
"Baby girl," Teddy said.
"Mom what's wrong," Allison asked, "I know that tone and you're at work."
"Theres been an accident," Teddy replied, "Annie is on her way to get you and Ev."
"Mom what happened," Allison asked.
"Asher is in the pit," Teddy replied, "he fell."
"How far," Allison asked.
"10 feet," Teddy guessed, "he was in a harness and is alert and oriented. He's going to CT now. It's Kepner's first day back and she has him."
"Dad," Allison said, "I want dad to do it."
"Sweetheart you need to get Everly and come," Teddy said, "we will be here."
"Should I call," Allison asked.
"I will," Teddy replied, "do you want them to come? You're his fiance and you've lived together for two years. Legally you're common law and you make the decisions. His parents can't override you."
"Don't let them make decisions," Allison said, "mom they didn't vaccinate him. They got mad that we did."
"You have to," Teddy said, "Everly is up to date?"
"She is," Allison said, "Cat doesn't have school today can she baby sit?"
"Cat or Ellie," Teddy assured, "Faroke isn't here you could call him. Him and Nisha are so good with Ev."
"I'll call Nisha first," Allison said.
"Call then get organized," Teddy replied.
Allison called Nisha who was there in 10 minutes with Khitam.
"Allie go," Nisha assured, "I have Ev. I'll stay here until you get home. Keep me updated."
Annie picked up Allison and drove her to the hospital.
They got the test results back as Allison walked into the ER.
"Asher," Allison yelled running to him.
"Okay," April said, "it's not as bad as we thought."
"What is it," Teddy asked.
"Teddy, Owen out," April said, "just next of kin."
"Allison," Asher said.
"I'm his fiance," Allison said, "we have limited contact with his parents."
"Okay," April said, "so your left arm is broken and the shoulder is dislocated you've also broken the collar bone on that side. That will be fixed easily and I'll send an ortho resident to set it. You may need surgery, I want to watch it for the next couple hours. Your kidney and spleen appear to be bleeding from when you hit the beam."
"If we do surgery now," Allison asked.
"Right now I don't know if it's our best course of action," April said.
"Check with dad," Allison said, "surgery would entail?"
"Ex lap," April said, "go in, find bleeders and sew. There should be no long term damage. You're young."
"Why would you wait for surgery," Allison asked.
"See if the bleeding stops on it's own," April replied, "it could resolve."
"The risk," Allison asked, she had learned to ask a lot of questions in these settings over the last couple years with Everly.
"Blood loss, loss of the kidney," April replied, "surgery carries its own risk; it's under general anesthesia, infection, longer recovery time."
"Cost," Asher groaned.
"We'll figure it out," Allison said, "we have yours and mine. It's a work injury your union will have to cover it."
"Can we come in," Teddy asked from the door of the trauma room.
"Yes," Allison said.
"What's the plan," Owen asked.
"I want to give it a couple hours and see if the bleeding stops before I operate," April said, "he may not need it. The arm and collarbone will be set now."
"Kepner likelihood of needing surgery," Owen asked.
"80%," April said.
"Go before he loses more blood," Owen said.
"The cost," Asher said again.
Without hesitation Teddy replied, "use Allie's visa then we can talk after. This first money can wait."
April took Asher up to the OR.
"Not again," Allison panicked pacing the waiting room.
"He's going to be okay," Teddy tried to sooth.
"Mom I can't do this again," Allison ranted, "I can't wait here to know if some one I love is okay. Mom my fiance got hurt at work and now is in surgery."
"Lets sit," Teddy suggested.
"I can't," Allison yelled.
"Allie this is pretty routine baby girl," Teddy assured, "Kepner is good."
"Why can't dad or Auntie Meg do it they're better then Kepner," Allison said.
"They can't he's family," Teddy replied, "Allison he will be okay."
"No," Allison said, "it won't be okay. Nothing is ever okay. They take my baby in there and life was never the same."
"It's a broken arm and some bleeding," Teddy replied.
"No," Allison sobbed.
Michelle and Mark walked into the hospital and found them.
"How is he," Michelle asked.
"Internal bleeding, dislocated shoulder, broken arm and broken collar bone," Teddy said, "one of our trauma surgeons is repairing the bleeding now and the bones will also be set. He will be here 3-4 days then will recover at home. The arm will need 6-8 weeks to heal then he'll go back to work. This is something we see more than you think."
"How did he get hurt," Mark asked.
"A beam broke and he fell," Stewart said joining them, "I just came to check on you guys then will go back to the yard and meet with the investigators."
"What happened," Allison asked.
"The beam he was on broke and fell," Stewart said, "he fell towards the water and away from other beams thank god. His harness caught him after he fell about 10 feet. It did what it was supposed to do. It took almost 2 hours for crews to get in and get him down. He was talking the whole time. I've spoken to Brian and will be speaking to the owners of the company and we will help you however you need. We take care of our own."
"He's still in surgery," Allison said, "he can't work for a couple months."
"Okay," Stewart said, "we will help you guys out. The union will send you some papers."
"She can't speak for him," Mark said, "he's our son."
"My fiance," Allison said.
"Legally she calls the shots until he regains consciousness," Teddy replied, "they're common law now after living together 2 years and engaged. The way the hospital will treat it is as if she is his wife already."
"Where is Everly," Michelle asked.
"With Nisha," Allison said, "Nisha brought Khitam to our house."
"And is she a suitable babysitter," Michelle asked.
"She's my niece," Teddy answered, "through marriage. OBGYN fabulous with kids and Everly loves her."
"I want to see my son," Mark demanded.
"He's in surgery," Owen replied, "I just checked in. Dr Kepner is about half way through. His numbers look good on the monitor."
"We should have been called," Mark snapped.
"Why," Owen asked, "you haven't been around for the last three years. It's been three years and you hardly see them. They have lived together as a couple for two years. That makes them common law."
"They are engaged and have lived as a couple for two years in the eyes of the government she has the right to make the decisions," Teddy snapped.
"And if she doesn't know," Mark yelled.
"Don't talk about me like I'm not here," Allison said, "I'm not the 17 year old who just found out she's pregnant. If I need advice I will talk to Ash's doctors and to my parents. I will talk to people who know what they're doing."
"This is your fault," Mark yelled, "if you hadn't."
"Stop," Owen roared, "no one speaks to her like that."
"If he didn't have to support her he wouldn't have been on that beam," Mark yelled.
"No one can know that," Owen replied, "we know this is hard waiting for your child in emergency surgery. It's stressful and you don't know what's going on."
"How would you know," Michelle snapped.
"Because Annie had a similar procedure when she was 19," Teddy replied, "she was beaten. I was anxious and angry that she was hurt but we had to hide that. We had to be calm for her. If you can't be calm you can't be here. Asher will be done in a couple hours, Allison does not need you here verbally abusing her."
"What are you saying," Mark asked.
"If you can not be calm, helpful and supportive you can go home," Teddy replied, "I think it's best if you leave."
"You can't do that," Mark yelled.
"Want to try," Teddy challenged.
"It's our son," Mark yelled, "we make the decisions from this point."
"He's my fiance," Allison screamed, "he chose me, he chose Everly. He chose us."
"Enough," Mark roared in her face.
"Leave," Allison screamed, "get out. Get out now! We don't want you here. We don't need you here."
Teddy wrapped her arms around Allison, "breathe baby girl. I have you, you're okay, you're going to be okay."
"I need them to go," Allison sobbed, "I can't do them and this. Mommy get them out."
Megan joined them in the waiting room, "I heard there's a commotion."
"Asher's parents need to go," Owen said, "they're pushing Allison and trying to take control."
"Mr and Mrs Blouin," Megan commanded, "I know you are worried about your son but I'm going to need you to wait elsewhere."
"Who are you," Mark roared.
"Dr Megan Hunt I'm the chief of surgery this is my hospital," Megan replied, "I'm going to give you two choices go wait elsewhere or go home."
"If we don't," Mark yelled, "he's our son we have a right to see him."
"He is 20 years old," Megan replied, "he is an adult. In the emergency room he asked for his fiance. He chose Allison as his medical power of attorney when he came in. He asked for her."
"We're not leaving," Mark said.
"I'm going to call security," Megan replied, "Dr Hunt, Dr Altman take Allison to wait in one of your offices please."
"Asher," Allison sobbed.
"Allie just go with them and April will page them as soon as she's done," Megan promised.
Nisha took the two little girls into the yard to play, she watched Everly walk around with her walker while pushing Khitam in the baby swing.
"Mommy," Everly asked taking slow steps to the gate.
"Mommy will be home later," Nisha assured, "we're going to play then go in and make dinner. Do you want noodles or rice?"
"Oodles," Everly smiled for her favorite dinner.
"We'll have noodles with chicken," Nisha said, she had looked in the fridge and freezer while the girls had napped. She was going to make penne noodles with tomato sauce, peas and chicken for Everly.
Nisha went through the nightly routine with both girls then paused trying to put them to bed. Everly fought the bedtime routine with Nisha. Even her usually preferred bath didn't sooth her. She didn't know where her parents were and mommy and daddy not being home for bed time was scary.
"Hey," Faroke answered his phone.
"I'm trying to put Ev and Khitam to bed," Nisha said, "but they only have the one crib."
"Do you want me to come get Kitham," Faroke asked.
"No," Nisha said, "she'll need to nurse soon. She liked noodles tonight though."
"Are you going sleep there," Faroke asked, "I can come trade you."
"Everly knows I'm here we haven't heard yet," Nisha said, "until one of them gets here I should stay."
"I'm going to come," Faroke said, "bring the pack and play."
"Pack and play," Nisha said, "last time we were here Allison took one out from under the stairs for us to use."
"Do you need anything," Faroke asked.
"More diapers for Khitam," Nisha said, "I've used Ev's wipes but I need more diapers and a pair of sweat pants for myself."
"I'll bring you clean clothes, tea and a book," Faroke said, "see you soon. If you hear."
"I'll call," Nisha assured.
"Allison," April said, "Asher is out of surgery."
"Can I see him," Allison asked.
"Soon," April assured.
"Will he be okay," Allison asked.
"Yes," April assured, "he's had a few units of blood, I've repaired a spleen and a kidney laceration. The left radius and ulna were broken. They did need to pin the scaphoid bone. His collar bone will heal on it's own and the shoulder is back in it's socket."
"Time," Allison asked.
"Lets say a week here," April said, "then 4-5 weeks at home for the arm and the spleen. I need to monitor his kidney function over the next few days."
"Long term," Teddy asked.
"With physio he'll regain full function," April assured.
"Thank you," Allison said, "can I see him?"
"We're going," Teddy said.
Allison followed her parents to post op.
"Hey," Allison said, "how are you feeling?"
"It hurts," Asher said, "you stayed."
"I stayed," Allison said, "I'll always stay."
"Ev," Asher asked.
"Home with Nisha," Allison said, "her and Faroke are going to stay the night."
"I'm going to stay with you," Teddy said.
"Mom trade Faroke and Nisha," Allison said, "go be with Everly let them take Khitam home."
"I'm going to call Asher's parents," Owen said.
"No," Asher replied, "don't call them. My dad."
"They know you had surgery," Owen said, "I'm just going to let them know you're all right."
"No," Asher said.
"We won't tonight," Owen replied, "but we have to let them know."
"Text," Allison said.
"My arm," Asher asked.
"Will be fine," Teddy assured.
"You're going to be okay," Allison said.
Teddy and Owen said good bye and stepped out of the room.
"I love you," Allison whispered before kissing him gently.
"I love you two," Asher sighed.
"Sleep I'm not going anywhere," Allison soothed holding his hand.
Asher closed his eyes as the nurse gave him more pain medication, he was asleep in seconds. Allison sat beside him holding his and and watching the monitors.
