"Blouin, Altman-Hunt," a resident called your scrubbing in.
"Yes," Allison cheered, giving Leo a high five. They were the first sub interns chosen to scrub in.
"We're with Dr Liard,' the resident said she's a general surgeon.
"What is it," Allison asked.
"Liver resection," the resident replied.
"Will we be able to touch the patient," Allison asked.
"Depend on Dr Liard," the resident replied, "and you two know each somehow."
"We're siblings," Leo replied.
"But your names," the resident said, "half siblings?"
"I'm married," Allison replied.
They reached the spot where they were to meet Dr Liard.
"Who do you have for me," Cassidy Liard asked.
"Leo Altman-Hunt and Allison Blouin," the resident replied.
"Altman-Hunt," Cassidy said, "are you from Seattle by any chance."
"Yes," Leo and Allison replied together.
"I did my residency there 25 years ago with a Dr Owen Hunt and a Dr Teddy Altman," Cassidy said.
"Our parents," Allison replied.
"Our," Cassidy said, "little Allie and Leo? Grace's baby siblings."
"Yes," Allison replied.
"Wow and you're here as sub interns," Cassidy shook her head, "time is weird."
"You know Grace," Leo asked.
"We did our residencies together, I was in her wedding," Cassidy replied, "then I moved for my fellowship and we grew apart. How is she? Is she still with Josh?"
"Her and Josh are good," Allison replied, "I saw them about a week ago before I flew out."
"So you two surgeons like your parents," Cassidy asked.
"Yes," Allison replied.
"But Allison your name," Cassidy said, "why Blouin?"
"I'm married," Allison replied, "I chose to take Asher's name."
"When," Cassidy asked.
"Three years ago but we've been together since highschool," Allison replied.
"Wow and your parents," Cassidy asked.
"Very supportive," Allison said, "being away for six weeks is going to be hard though."
"Away from your husband," Cassidy asked.
"And our daughter," Allison replied, 'Everly is 7."
"That would be hard," Cassidy agreed, "one reason I've never had kids. Our career is hard to raise kids in."
"I can see that," Allison replied.
"It's not always fun," Leo agreed, "but for us both parents are surgeons, Allie's husband is an electrician so there's some normalcy there for Everly."
"So you two ready to scrub in," Cassidy asked.
"Yes," Allison smiled, "do you want us in regular caps or our own?"
"Your own is fine," Cassidy smiled, "your parents picked out some for everyone in our class. A colour or a pattern."
"They only did that for Grace's class because they were all her friends," Allison said, "and Dad picked all three of ours."
"What do you have," Cassidy asked.
"I have sun flowers and Leo has a treasurer map," Allison replied, "then Grace still wears her sea otters."
"Does your mom still have birds," Cassidy asked.
"She does," Allison smiled, "the bird cap is as much a part of mom as her scalpel. But they're scaling back slowly."
"It's time," Cassidy replied, "I knew she stepped down as chief a few years ago."
"It was time," Leo said.
"What schools are you two at," Cassidy asked.
"Texas South Western like mom," Leo smiled.
"UW," Allison replied.
"Different schools," Cassidy asked.
"Different needs," Allison replied, "I had to stay in Seattle for my daughter. Ev couldn't have been moved at 4, moving her for my residency will be hard on her, she'll miss her cousins and my parents."
"Grey Sloan residency then," Cassidy asked.
"I'm applying everywhere," Allison replied, "I want to leave Seattle. It's time for Ash and I to spread our wings."
"Leo what's your plans for residency," Cassidy asked.
"Military like mom and dad," Leo replied, "I finish med school then do a little bit in a military hospital then hopefully field surgeon."
"I remember when you two were just babies," Cassidy said as they scrubbed in.
"You used to babysit," Leo remembered.
"I did," Cassidy replied, "I can't believe how much you two have grown up. I remember the first day your mom appeared at Grey Sloan and how your dad would bark at us interns like a drill sergeant except for Grace. How he kicked me out of the front row when she did the intern appy so he could text through the whole thing."
"He was probably sending mom a play by play," Allison replied.
"They were so hard on her," Cassidy said, 'I'm expecting good things from you two lets go."
They followed Cassidy into the OR and watched as her resident opened.
"Altman-Hunt, Blouin retract please," Cassidy commanded. In the gallery the other subinterns were watching.
"We're doing it," Allison whispered to Leo.
"We are," Leo nodded.
"Leo we're almost surgeons," Allison beamed behind her mask, "we did it."
"We did," Leo agreed.
That night after the surgery the two siblings found somewhere to grab dinner and a drink.
"Would you really move," Leo asked.
"We will for my residency for a few years," Allison replied, 'Ash won't be super thrilled but he knows we need to for my residency. Leo I've put so many of my dreams of travel, going away to school having the adventures you, Ellie, Cat and Annie got. I want to leave Seattle, I need to. To prove that I can do it on my own with out mom and dad right there. I won't go alone, I'll go with Ash and Ev. I have to prove to myself that I'm not the family failure."
"You are not the failure," Leo said, "Allie you didn't fail."
"Our family knows that but you have no idea what people say about me when they find out I got pregnant at 17," Allison replied.
"And you've done so much more Allie," Leo said, "you are the only one who doesn't believe it."
"Asher's parents," Allison said, "we had to go to court. It's on reason I want out of Seattle. If we're not in Seattle they can't keep spying on us and trying to punish us. They;ve been punishing me since I was 17."
"Because they're judgemental ass holes," Leo said.
"Leo, we need to leave Seattle," Allison replied, "I need that opportunity. I need to spread my wings."
"You do," Leo said, "wherever you go you will be great."
"I just want to set the right example for my daughter," Allison replied.
"You always have Allie," Leo assured.
"Please you all look down on me, you Ellie, Cat," Allison replied.
"No," Leo said, "I was an ass when I found out and when Ev first came home but she is incredible. I hope I can be half the parent you are one day."
"You'll be so much more mature that you will be," Allison replied, "will you and Charlotte?"
"I don't know," Leo replied, "in a few years I'm not in a rush for kids."
"One more once I'm part way through residency," Allison replied.
"Can you do it," Leo asked.
"We can and Ash and I together can," Allison replied.
"I don't know about Charlotte," Leo said, "she wants me to come home and go into family medicine."
"No," Allison argued, ``you've always wanted to be an army trauma surgeon Leo you have to."
"I will but she's not happy," Leo replied.
"She can move to wherever you're stationed and teach," Allison replied.
"That works until I get deployed," Leo replied, "then she's there alone."
"She can grow up and make friends," Allison replied, "Leo she's going to stop working once you have kids."
"Why," Leo asked.
"Because she has no goals and no ambition," Allison replied, "she's not good enough for you. Leo Charlotte is going to drag you down and hold you back."
"I've thought about it," Leo said.
"Dump her," Allison said, "find your person."
"I don't think everyone gets a person," Leo said, "not all of us are that lucky."
"But you should try," Allison said.
"Chris and Jenna are happy but they're not each other's person," Leo said, "Auntie Meg and Uncle Nathan."
"Mom and dad, Annie and Josh," Allison said, "Ash and I."
"I don't think everyone gets that," Leo said.
"But look," Allison said, "get rid of Charlotte and meet someone who is right for you."
"How," Leo asked.
"Don't ask me how to break up with someone," Allison said, "I married my first boyfriend."
"And your solution is that I dump my girlfriend," Leo said.
"At least don't propose,' Allison replied.
"I'm not there yet," Leo said, "and I can't afford a ring."
"We could hardly,' Allison admitted, "I don't know how Asher did it. Mine isn't huge."
"I wouldn't buy a huge one," Leo said, "and you're a surgeon. You can't wear big fancy rings. Mom and Annie wear theirs on a necklace more than on their hands."
"I have mine on a chain right now," Allison replied, "all three, promise, engagement and wedding. They're always on my body."
"Does it bug Asher," Leo asked, "I would want her to wear it all the time."
"He understands that I can't safely wear them in labs or when I'm working," Allison replied, "if I'm off I wear them on my finger."
"It's just been so long with Charlotte," Leo said, "I feel like she's expecting it."
"Have you ever talked about it," Allison asked.
"She's said she wants it but I don't say much," Leo replied, "I don't know if I want to get married."
"You don't have to," Allison replied.
"You did," Leo pointed out.
"But it was our choice," Allison replied, "Asher and I chose together."
"Are you happy," Leo asked.
"I am," Allison assured, "I miss them like crazy but I'm happy with my family. Leo you will find someone when you let go of Charlotte."
"Maybe," Leo said, "I have to decide."
"You do," Allison agreed, "and no matter what you choose I'm here."
