"Strike her down," Jerec said, his voice arch. "And realize your true destiny. Your true power!"
Kyle looked down at Jan, his lightsaber in his hands, then back up at Jerec.
"...why would you even ask me to do that?" he asked.
Jerec's smirk faded.
"What are you talking about?" he replied. "I saw what happened with Maw. He was at your mercy, and you killed him."
"Because he was someone who I didn't like very much," Kyle replied, waving a hand for emphasis, and his lightsaber made a vwuum noise as it moved. "And he was literally asking for it. But you're asking me to kill my girlfriend."
"Am I your girlfriend?" Jan asked, distracted from the fact that a troupe of Dark Jedi had captured her and thrown her in front of Kyle. "I don't think we ever talked about that before."
Kyle shrugged. "I'm simplifying," he said. "And it has less impact if I called you my pilot."
"What are you talking about?" Sariss asked.
"Your master just told me to kill Jan to try and turn me to the dark side," Kyle pointed out. "Which is something I have no reason to do."
"Isn't that just what you Jedi do?" Jerec said. "It's the best way to turn someone to the Dark Side, isn't it?"
"The Emperor did it, sure," Kyle answered. "But Luke had a reason to do it, because the Emperor was taunting him with the death of his friends. And the Emperor had a reason to do it, because if Luke had killed him he'd have taken Luke over. Even Vader would have had a reason, because he believed the Dark Side was stronger and Luke was literally his son."
"How exactly do you know that?" Jerec demanded. "There were only three people there!"
"How do you know that?" Kyle replied, confused. "There were literally three people there and two of them died. I only know because I got to know Luke a while ago. We reminisced about the Death Star plans – he helped get them to the Rebellion, and I stole them."
"Wasn't that Jyn Orso?" Sariss asked, curiously.
Jan looked up. "No, I'm Kyle's pilot – and girlfriend, apparently – but I didn't steal the plans."
"Okay, this is getting confusing," Kyle said. "Let's circle back to the actual point. Why do you think I'd do that?"
"It's just how Dark Jedi complete their journey to the Dark Side," Jerec answered, shrugging. "Self destructive murder of their loved ones and the people who could help them."
Sariss and Yun exchanged glances, and shifted away from Jerec. Even Boc stopped capering for a moment, getting further from his Miraluka Master.
"Well, if that's not the right way to turn you to the Dark Side, I'll just have to use someone who you don't like," Jerec declared. "Yun! Give me your lightsaber and go and stand next to Katarn."
Yun stared at him.
"...no?" the young near-human replied.
"Honestly, you're really not thinking this through," Kyle said. "At all. You literally killed my father and we're a few miles away from a source of force power that would let anyone who misused it become the ruler of the galaxy overnight. And your plan is to turn me to the dark side, making it so I'm driven by rage and hatred and ambition, and then… what? You're expecting that I'll just obey you because you're also a dark Jedi?"
"It's worked so far," Jerec said. "But I have certain gaps in my organization. You could become my right hand man!"
Yun raised his hand.
"What about me?" he asked. "I know the answer, but I thought I'd just register an objection that at this point I'm functionally your right hand man, since Sariss is a woman and Boc is insane, and you're literally trying to get me killed so you can maybe get a better servant."
"The Emperor did it," Jerec shrugged.
"The Emperor got thrown down a reactor shaft," Kyle pointed out.
Jerec made a face. "If you're trying to say no, just say no," he advised.
"I'm confused," Boc said. "Are we going to get to the point where the stabbing happens? That's the best part!"
He giggled.
Yun was looking even more thoughtful.
"Any chance I can join your side?" he asked. "I'm becoming rapidly aware that my prospects with my current organization aren't very good."
AN:
Sticking with Kyle, that whole light-dark choice in Jedi Knight doesn't really make much sense.
