I felt my nails instinctively dig into my palm as soon as she started handing out the papers. Are you kidding? My science teacher slammed a bright red paper down onto my desk and my eyes started to swim. Being frustrated didnt help. "You may start on your test." Ms. Dannagan hissed.
I looked over at the kid sitting next to me, Jake. Jake always seemed like a cool guy, but I'd never worked up the courage to just go up to him ask if he wanted to be my friend. That seemed like a childish thing to do. He was looking at me and our eyes met for a split second before he turned back to his paper. But turning my attention back to my current bane of my existance, I started struggling through the first question.
Around two minutes later, I felt a gentle tap on my shoulder. Jake's brown-green eyes were filled with... Concern? He handed me a note. 'uyo'er ysdlixec?' Oh. 'You're dyslexic?'. I nodded and shrugged my shoulders. He took back the scrap of paper and scribbled something on the other side and handed it to me. It took me a moment to decode the message but I eventually figured that it said 'Can you read the test?'. I sighed and shook my head.
Jake raised his hand and I almost freaked out. What in the world is he doing!? I went full panic-mode. Ms. Dannagan frowned and said "Yes? What's wrong now?" Jake's soft, nervous voice was comforting but the words were not comforting. They were very uncomfortable. "Pheobe can't read the questions on the test."
"I didn't realise she was that stupid."
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
"No, she's dyslexic. It's hard for her to read the test." I kicked Jake's shins and he smiled all sad and shruggy. Ms. Dannagan scowled at me, her stringy grey hair falling in her wrinkled face. "Then I suppose you can sit in the hall for the rest of the period. I'll do a different color copy... At some point."
