Semblance Incontinence, Part 2
The grounds of Beacon were empty, exactly as Ozpin, Ironwood, and Ms. Goodwitch had said they would be. Yang had answered while she was in the aura machine, talking with Amber.
Apparently Amber had a bit of an attitude problem, but Ozpin said that would most likely fade within the next few minutes. So instead, it would be a good idea to go outside and start to walk around, not do anything too strenuous.
Ha! Ruby felt too good to not do strenuous things. The leaves were barely jiggling in the wind, only moving like an inch at a time. Her scroll wasn't dead, but it seemed like it was inching along whenever she wanted to look something up.
Naturally, when she had too much to do, she started to swing on the trees using Crescent Rose, exactly as she had slowed down her fall the previous day when she was fighting Uncle Qrow. Who said that he would maybe train her later, but she was too hyped up right now.
Not to mention the wind and breeze felt great. It was a slow wind, a subtle wind. One that she desperately hoped wasn't the Maiden powers activating on their own because she had no idea what she was doing when it came to that.
Maybe she could take some time right now to figure it out? No, she had to get to the courtyard because that was where Yang had said she was going to be? Wait, no, that was the rooftop because apparently the courtyard was closed until six in the morning.
Probably because there were a few people with latent destructive Semblances who were using the early morning hours to train. Cough, Dad and Qrow, cough.
Yeah, Ruby was feeling good. She glanced at the rooftop of Beacon, brushing off some more rose petals that came from the rose bushes just off to the side, although Ruby was surprised they had rose bushes truthfully. Wouldn't that hurt if someone got in them?
Oh right, Aura would take care of that. Aura, and whoever discovered it, was a genius. It could take care of so many small little difficulties, such as the pinpricks of rose bushes.
She took a few steps back and surged forward, trying not to use her Semblance this time. She didn't want to count on Petal Burst all the time. It was handy, certainly, but that didn't mean it didn't drain her aura. And the faster she went, the more she drained it.
She flourished Crescent Rose, making its blunt edge grab the tree branch. She spun in a circle around it, using her muscles to increase her spin velocity. It was like that one game character, the one with the stretchy arms. Yeah, she could do just that using Crescent Rose instead of stretchy arms.
The tree wasn't moving though, aside from a small amount of the breeze.
She hurled herself upwards, grinning like a maniac as it seemed the wind itself was helping her, before her feet caught on the side of Beacon. Fortunately, not on a window, otherwise she'd have some explaining to do.
She consciously avoided having her Semblance activated, instead just using her own speed as she sped up past gravity. This was so amazing! She wasn't using the Maiden's power though, this was solely herself-
Ruby soared past the roof to see the three Belladonna's in a small corner, talking vividly. Their hands were moving very slowly though, and Ruby couldn't hear what they were saying. She landed on the roof a moment later, putting Crescent Rose away.
Again, she brushed off more rose petals. The wind blew behind her, which was strange because it had just been on the wall heading straight up...actually, could wind go straight up a building? Shoot, she'd have to look that up, but her scroll was taking ages to load up any messages.
"Hey Blake! Mr. Belladonna, Mrs. Belladonna," she said to the three almost frozen statues. Blake's ears were out and mimicking the movements of her mother's, although her golden eyes were wide in shock.
Ghira was saying something, just barely starting to turn around. He was moving an inch by an inch, as if he was trying to not be stuck in some kind of syrup. Even thicker than that. No, molasses!
Although molasses made her think of brown sugar, and that made her think of cookies, and now she was kind of hungry because the most she'd eaten in the last few days was a few chicken breasts and some pasta. Although Yang did try to bring in a few cookies to her whenever she and Ruby passed each other in the evenings or mornings or whenever it was they actually saw each other.
It was weird, despite being in the same building they saw each other less frequently now, it seemed. "You three alright?" Ruby asked again. "Is this some kind of game that the rest of us wouldn't know about?" Ruby asked as she shared a grin with Blake. Although Blake still looked worried, and now even more so.
Ruby could actually see her ears flick. The movement wasn't sudden, but rather slow, now. It was almost impossible to see normally. "I'm impressed with your control Blake, I thought you couldn't move your ears slow!" Ruby grinned.
Blake made no attempt at moving at normal speed. Ruby brushed off more rose petals. At this point it was almost strange just how far those rose bushes popped up. There weren't any on the roof, and it's not like Ruby was using her Semblance right now.
Or...she glanced at Mr. Belladonna. He was still trying to turn around. "Oh, I guess I am," Ruby muttered as the rose petals turned around her. She was using her Semblance now. Had been for a while, probably since she turned it on back after the elevator from the Vault.
"Well, shoot," Ruby muttered. How to turn it off now? She was doing everything she normally did when she wanted it to turn off after turning it on accidentally.
She sat in the corner for a bit, before realizing that wouldn't help much. Her Semblance wanted her to go fast. And there was little else speed going on just by sitting down and doing nothing. "I wonder if I could get someone to race me," Ruby muttered aloud. She grasped Blake on the arm, "I'll be right back! Probably faster than you think it'll be," she said. Blake once again had no response except slowly turning her head towards where Ruby had first come up from.
Oh wow, Mr. Belladonna had sensed her first, followed by Blake's mom. Blake had actually seen her last, which was strange because Ruby had thought the girl would be used to random acts of strangeness happening around Ruby. She was there when Uncle Qrow was there too.
Actually, Ruby hadn't told her about half the things Qrow's Semblance had happen. Like the time it broke the fridge, it broke the shop, it broke everything else in just as many minutes as it did.
That would probably be a fun story, but it would have to wait because right now Ruby was stuck in permanent Semblance time and while that would be really cool because she could just go 'woosh' and she'd be somewhere else in everybody else's time but now she was also so much faster than everyone else and she couldn't control a darn thing about it!
Not to mention the darn wind constantly at her back blowing her forward no matter which direction was facing and she hoped that wasn't the Maiden's power because she had no idea what she was doing so that way she could figure out how to turn it off!
"Okay, bye Blake, be back in a few minutes my time, which will probably be just a few seconds of your time," Ruby said, waving a quick goodbye even though none of the three Belladonna's could actually react fast enough to tell her no, or to stay.
Ruby walked down to the floor below, brushing more rose petals off her face. Now that she was actually aware that she was in Semblance time Beacon was just strange and weird now. No one was here, or no one was around. The entire place was silent, without anything for sound except that wind behind her, pushing her forward more and more.
It was like it wanted her to go fast. Actually, that might be a way to do it, so go so fast she breaks out of her Semblance. Or if she activates her Semblance only to deactivate it later then maybe she'd break out of this!
She tried that, focusing on her inward aura so as to activate her Semblance. It had been second nature for so long that she'd almost forgotten how to do it on purpose.
The floors of Beacon surrendered to her speed, and in only a few seconds even to her she was essentially across the entire castle. When she deactivated it, because she had to otherwise she was going to crash into a wall, so hoped that meant someone would come out of the doorways to yell at her to keep it down.
But they didn't, and all that was left with was the howling wind. Which...had it gotten worse? Before it had only been a gentle breeze, but now it was a surprising gust, fluttering her cape.
Actually how did that work? Was her cape stuck in Semblance time too, or was it just because it was stuck to her so it somehow came up with her time? Actually was it different times, or was it just her moving so fast that the wind was just following her?
She wasn't sure. She'd have to actually check on that one of these days. Or maybe her Semblance wasn't actually super speed, but it behaved so much like it it was hard to tell it apart. It was strange, sometimes it just sped her up and other times it acted like this.
Ruby gave a quiet sigh, the sound eliminated from the wind surrounding her like a tornado, before she started to head down to the ground floor. None of the doors were open, and when she tried to open hers for a split second she could actually see the door start to open.
Usually the doors were near instantaneous. But no, she could actually see this door open inch by inch. "Alright, this is both really cool and really disturbing at the same time," Ruby commented as she slid into her room.
The view of the mirror struck her. Her entire body was shaking in place, as if she wasn't actually there even though she knew she was, and one of her eyes was currently on fire.
It was an orange fire at least, and it seemed small, only vaguely reaching out to the side of her head. "Well. That's more than slightly disturbing," Ruby said as she stared at her visage. She turned her head, trying to keep the fire in view. It was still there, and it turned with her head.
"Okay, so that must be the Maiden power. So how...how do I turn it off?" Ruby asked the empty room. She sat down on the bed, quickly hopping up and down on it. The wind seemingly followed her, but as most of the stuff in her room was heavier, it really didn't blow much of anything around.
She focused on her scroll, hoping that the aura app at least would start up quickly. It took a few minutes, to her at least but in what was probably only a second or so. She was glad that it had no loading times because otherwise that would get annoying very quickly.
Her aura was still at half. "Oh come on!" She yelled aloud as she flopped down onto the bed, her mouth slowly being covered by rose petals.
Winning Bets
Yang looked around a bit. She'd gotten the message sent by Ruby a good few hours ago, although what her little sister was doing awake at four thirty in the morning she had no idea.
And of course Pyrrha had woken up at six, as was her custom, and while Yang was more than happy to sleep away the day, she had promised Pyrrha she'd get some practice in considering that her team leader was going into the Vytal Festival solo rounds.
Jaune and Blake could've done it too, but their duo showing was later in the day, today in fact, and they would need to get a bit of practice. Blake's bed was empty when Pyrrha had woken her up, but the customary book was still open on the pillow. Which meant Blake had left earlier, and in a bit of a hurry.
Fortunately, the one boy of Team PABY was also a heavy sleeper, which meant that Yang could shower for as long as she wanted and not be bugged by him. Although he had quickly learned to knock before entering the bathroom, even if it seemed no one was in there. And he never once brought up anything that could be considered sensitive.
In all actuality, he wasn't half bad as guys go. Yang had dated far, far worse people who would always ask her stupid questions. "What are your measurements? I want to buy a shirt for you." "Of course I don't want you going to that party by yourself, think of what could happen!" "You don't need long showers, you look wonderful already!"
Yang got a lot of practice in making sure that people would stop asking her stupid questions. Or bugging her with stupid statements, rather.
The air was warm, a testament to how close it was to spring again. It was hard to get used to the temperature of Vale. Patch was very used to wildly varied temperatures, closer to how it was in Mistral than anything, despite being close to the ocean.
In winter, it snowed. In summer, it was hot. Autumn, there were a mix of both but in general it was chilly and rainy, and in spring, it was warm and rainy. Simple. Easy. And then Vale was warm all year round, exception being autumn and winter where it nosedived down into the 'far too cold' category. It also went straight back up after the cold shifts, unlike Patch where it was more of a gentle slope.
The courtyard was still technically closed to students of Beacon, but that hadn't stopped her at all. And Yang had made sure that Pyrrha had never known that it was closed to begin with, all with Blake giving her the stink eye. That was fun. Jaune had given a Pyrrha a warning instead, but like all the times the guy had given the red-head a warning, it'd gone straight over her head.
She was so head-over-heels for him and neither of them realized it. That was usual, Yang would have guessed, based on how they acted. Jaune seemed like the type to not know what was going on. And Pyrrha...well, Pyrrha was obvious, but she and Blake had a bet going on how long it would take for her to at least ask him out.
And the dance! She was so close to winning that sweet, sweet two hundred lien. And then...no, she couldn't judge Ruby for half of the stuff that went down.
Although she had to admit those dragon fireworks were awesome. And she didn't even get into trouble for it despite that they spelled out her name.
Even the Xiao Long part. How Ruby managed to do that, almost destroy the CCT, and completely dismantle what was existing of the dance, she didn't know. But darn, her little sister knew how to make the best celebrations. With explosions and fire.
As Yang had mentioned, the best celebrations!
The air was surprisingly still, even despite the warmth. Yang looked around, trying to find the signs of her lost sister. Ruby had mentioned to be out here at a specific time, and Yang wouldn't botch that ever. No, she'd never stand up Ruby. On purpose.
Leave her to the horrible decisions of herself? Absolutely. Stand her up? No. Although why she'd decided to go and start up a weapons shop...Yang didn't know. But the thing was Ruby was good at it. Not just at forging or weaponsmithing, because she was, but rather just owning a shop in general. Even if she probably got a lot of help from their dad.
Not Uncle Qrow. He didn't help, he just stood in the corner darkly and muttered inane things that pissed everyone off and let his horrible luck Semblance make everything funnier the rest of the time.
"She is supposed to be here?" Pyrrha asked. The red haired Huntress in training was trailing just behind her. "I haven't seen her yet."
"She's supposed to be," Yang said, checking out the scroll message to make sure it was accurate. It was, to the best of her reading, saying it was. And she was a solid reader, although she never liked to read. How Blake could do it for ends on ends she didn't know.
Her scroll dinged just as she was about to put it away. A message from Blake, asking if she'd seen Ruby. Yang's eyebrow rose. Why would Blake be asking her that? Usually the cat faunus had her own tracking abilities. "Who was that?" Pyrrha asked kindly as she sat down against a small concrete fountain. That must have been freezing, Yang noted.
"Blake. Wants to know where Ruby was."
"Odd. She wasn't out training this morning, was she?"
"No, she and Jaune were going to be training whenever it was that Jaune woke up. Probably around eight or nine. The match isn't until two," Yang said. Pyrrha nodded. Yang had long since been the timekeeper for Team PABY, and whatever schedule it was that she set was what was kept.
She was about to be worried. Ruby could be late sometimes, but ever since she'd opened Summer's Weapon Shop that aspect had decreased dramatically. Which meant this was unique.
Until the wind suddenly blew past them, and Ruby was on a tree, trying to get rid of extra momentum. Yang blinked; was it just her, or was Ruby's eye on fire? "Hey uh...you may want to put yourself out. Before you lose an eyebrow," Yang advised.
Ruby's head tilted before she glanced at the pool, let out an adorable squeak and promptly tried to douse herself out. "No-stupid-maiden" she murmured in-between the water. Pyrrha's eyes met Yang's.
"This...is not normal. But I don't know her as well as you do," Pyrrha said, ignoring the way the water splashed on her.
"Pyrrha, you know enough to know that it's weird. You're not that bad at talking with other people," Yang deadpanned. Pyrrha let out a quiet chuckle before she reached back, pulling Ruby out of the 'must have been freezing' water. Admittedly, Ruby's eye was still on fire. "You uh...you missed it."
There was a breeze now, too. How odd. Before it had been completely still. "Yeah, it's...stupid maiden things I don't know how to turn it off!" Ruby groaned to the world. "No one told me how to turn it off!"
"Turn what off?" Yang asked. Maiden? The heck was that?
Ruby sighed, and the visage made Yang relax a lot more. She probably should have been more worried about the fact that Ruby's eye was on fire but it seemed she wasn't worried about it so...she must have known what was going on.
"I don't know how to explain it so I'm going to go really fast!" Ruby warned. Yang nodded, and hit the record button on her scroll because she'd need it for playback later. It had become second nature at this point.
"Ozpin was having a problem so I volunteered for it after a lot of soul searching and I fought uncle Qrow a few times and even Dad a few more times and I was doing really well but they told me to do it for myself and not for anyone else so I did and then we went down to some ominous little vault that's at the bottom of Beacon and I got transplanted with someone's aura and they were a thing called a maiden and by the way magic is apparently real that's a thing and now I'm here and I don't know how to turn it off!"
Yang paused to parse it. She looked down at her scroll, transcribing the words that it thought Ruby had said. Pyrrha raised her hand to ask a question, and Yang gently put it back down. "Two questions. One, how much do you owe me," Yang questioned with a smirk.
Ruby growled. "Two hundred lien."
"Yes!" Yang fist pumped. "Called it. Now I just need to figure out for what. Secondly, have you tried just...turning off your aura?"
The flames went away. "They're not tied to aura their tied to something else and I don't know how to turn them off it's like they're always on but that can't be the case because otherwise they'd have warned me I would have flaming eyes for the rest of my life that actually sounds awesome why wouldn't they mention that as a boon..."
"They're gone," Pyrrha noted. Ruby blinked, before she darted over to the fountain. "So what was all that about?"
"I...don't know if I can say," Ruby muttered.
Yang held up her scroll. "Did you want me to delete this then? Whenever you go into Semblance talking mode I pull it out so I know what it is you said. Also, magic's real?"
"It's how Qrow turns into a bird," Ruby explained.
"So that's what bet it was!" Yang cheered. "Wait, that was actually magic!? I just thought it was his Semblance too, but I didn't think they could do that."
"Yeah I want to figure out how to transform myself into a wolf. It'd be cool. Then I could talk to Zwei, sniff all the things-"
Pyrrha stared at Ruby before switching to Yang, and back again. "Magic is...real? And that's why your eye is on fire?"
"Remember the story of seasons? That actually happened," Ruby explained.
Yang thought about it, before she nodded. That made an unfortunate amount of sense. On the other hand, why had no one heard of this up until now. That seems like something that Huntresses and Huntsman should know about.
"Yeah, so I'm training on how to use them. Hold on, let's see if I can't figure out how to turn them on..." Ruby muttered.
Yang glanced at her sister. Despite being sixteen now, she was still the crazy little sister she'd always had. "Before that, I think you should work on figuring out what you did to turn them off. After all, turning them on at will is a good idea to know if you know how to turn them off."
"...I probably should think about that, huh."
Yang's scroll dinged. She glanced at it for a moment. "Ruby..." She asked after a moment. "Why is Blake asking if you were on the roof for a few seconds this morning? At...five thirty in the morning?" Yang asked.
"That's because I was! I was trying to look for you but I got stuck in permanent Semblance mode again," Ruby explained. Yang connected her scroll to Ruby's aura, nodding as she saw just how low it was again.
Sometimes that was the only way to escape permanent Semblance mode. Especially if one had a particularly nasty one like Ruby did. Yang's Semblance wasn't all that bad if it was stuck in permanent on mode. Although Pyrrha's...she still sometimes got nasty looks by the cooks for stealing all the silverware on accident that one time.
"We came out here to train. Perhaps you can watch Yang and myself?" Pyrrha asked kindly. Ruby nodded, darting over to the fountain. Her eye was on fire again, and there was a light breeze that followed her. "Thank you, Ruby. Also your eye is on fire again."
"Yeah I figured out how to turn it on!"
Yang rolled her eyes, and stretched out her arms and legs a bit. She flicked out her arms in the way she often did to get Ember Celica to activate. "Now the real question is...can you turn it off?" She asked with a hint of teasing.
Ruby knew what she was doing. The only thing that Yang could really do now is trust her. Ruby dove back under the water to see if somehow the water could help put it out. Yang took a deep breath. Maybe Ruby had absolutely no idea what she was doing...
Remember kids, when gaining mystical magic powers, always make sure they come with an off switch.
Also, I went and got myself a Pa t reon page! Same username as here. I post mostly writing lessons and such, for anyone that wants to learn how to write. I'm also going to make sure that I don't hold any chapters back using it. I'll still primarily update FFN and Ao3!
Until Next Time!
