Journal Entry 22

June 29, 1932, Wednesday

I spent today mostly on sentry duty at the navy hospital's front gate. Not much really happened other than an ambulance came rushing in with a patient. Couldn't get a good look at them. When you are stuck on guard detail it's hard to stay alert all the time especially when nothing out of the ordinary seems to happen. Training helps but yea it does get repetitive.

Michail kept me company on this occasion.

Back in boot camp when he found out about how I came to the States as a child he sometimes calls me his immigrant brother. For a big guy he can be pretty sentimental. Of course he likes to bring up our two people's ancient ties to each other. We had a pretty good laugh when we considered the possibility that our ancestors may have served together as legionaries for the Eastern Roman Empire. Probably not true but it would be amazing it was so.

Later a European woman with chestnut hair and in a blue dress walked up to our post. Usually most folks on the sidewalk ignore us but she was different. Her green eyes and a ready smile were focused on Michail who seemed quite pleased with the attention. She introduced herself as Sofija in English and asked my fellow marine who he was. Her accent is definitely Slavic but it's not Russian I believe.

They flirted for a little bit while I gave them some space and stood watch. They worked out a dinner date but then Michail took me off guard asking Sophia if she had a friend that I can go out with as part of a double date. As a matter of fact Sophia knows someone, claiming her friend to get out more anyway. Before I could even object Hercules looked at me, silently pleading to go along with the double date idea. Despite some reluctance on my part I agreed.

Soon enough Sofija and him agreed to have it at the nightclub called the Casanova and happen on Friday night. Then they kissed each other and Sofija went on her way. Once she was out of sight I told Michail these exact words.

"You owe me for this."

That big Greek just gave a toothy grin and replied. "You're welcome."

I get the feeling besides really wanting to be with Sofija he is trying to play matchmaker here. Him and some of the guys have been wanting to hook me up with a woman for some time. Also I suspect they made a wager among themselves about which one of them was going to find the right gal for me. Michail actually told me to keep this secret which added to my suspicion. He doesn't want the others to try to ruin his chance to win that wager.

Kinda annoyed with that scheming I admit but you know what it wouldn't hurt to try. Besides, it's just for one night. Whoever is my date, I hope we have a good time, even if it is temporary.

On a different note Hector got his rematch with Frank Steele of Squad D this evening. Shang helped with the towel and I with the water bucket while Felton acted as our squadmate's manager. He had been training hard for this whenever possible. Meanwhile Gunny acted as the referee

Initially Steele had the upper hand in the first round, driving Hector to the ropes, not once but twice. In the second round Frank taunted our buddy, causing him to be reckless and he got hammered pretty badly in the head with a right cross and he dropped sideways.

Fortunately Hector got up at the count of five

After that the squad leader had a real serious talk with Hector who was getting frustrated with himself. He reminded him how far he made it in the corps and not to surrender to that blowhard in the other corner. It actually did the trick. Hector slowly but surely got the upper hand in the third round using his speed and agility to avoid Frank's most of strikes while prepping him with jabs, few straights and body-shots.

It provoked his opponent, making him lose focus and Hector nailed him in the chin with a left uppercut. Man Frank went out cold and Gunny called it in. Hector dropped to his knees as we rushed to celebrate his win and got him up. He made our whole squad proud, including himself. Both Boxers had to be helped out of the ring and each were checked by a corpsman.

They were sent to the medical ward for the night and rejoined our squad tomorrow. I believe the two actually gained each other's respect from the way they nodded at each other. Mr. Guao, who watched the match with us, remarked that they fought with heart. I agree they sure did.

Shang was quite happy because he made a killing in cash betting on Hector earlier. He told our squad he loves Kung Fu better but does enjoy western boxing too. You know I think when there is time I'll go look for a place to watch such a fight where they use that martial art or others similar to it. Been hearing a lot about these fighting styles. It will be interesting to see its adepts in action.
