"Pat, can you get me that pillow from over there please?"
Patrick nodded and grabbed a pillow from one of the chairs next to the couch. Jamie helped Patrick place it behind Eddie's back. He looked at each of his five children.
"I want you guys to help your mom out. The baby is going to be here very, very soon and I don't want her doing things that are too stressful. That's where you guys come in. I will help you guys as best I can with things around the house. I want you guys to do your chores, your homework before playing games or watching videos on you tube. Cora, no Tik Tok, Snapchat or Instagram until you finish up your essay on 14th Century France. Got it?"
Cora nodded and looked at Eddie with concern.
"Mama, are you ok?"
Eddie shifted on the couch uncomfortably and winced slightly.
"I'm ok honey. How about you guys start working on your chores. I need to talk to your dad for a minute."
Once the kids had disappeared upstairs, and he heard the sound of several doors closing, Jamie looked at Eddie, apprehension lining his face.
"You ok Ed?"
Eddie shook her head no and reached for Jamie's hand, gripping it tight and letting out a breath.
"Noo… It hurts Jamie."
Jamie squeezed her hand and nodded.
"Are you having contractions?"
Eddie nodded and could only groan and get out a word.
"Mmm hmm."
Carefully and gently, Jamie helped Eddie to her feet. One hand still gripping hers, he fished his phone out of his pocket. He dialed Frank.
"Dad. Yeah, it's time. Can the kids ride to the hospital with you? Ok. Can you tell pop to call the rest of the family and let them know what's going on? Five minutes? Ok."
Jamie hung up the phone and he felt Eddie's grip on his own hand lessening. He noticed she could breathe easier. She took a moment or two to catch her breath.
"No matter how many times I go through labor, these contractions will always be the same. They hurt."
Taking a hold of both her hands, he held them both, giving them a squeeze, calling to the kids upstairs.
"Kids! Come downstairs please! It's time! The baby is coming, and grandpa will be here in less than five! Let's go! Come on!"
The sound of doors being thrown open and five sets of feet came clambering down the stairs. Keena looked up at Eddie wide eyed.
"Where's the baby mama?"
Eddie shook her head.
"The baby is coming honey. They aren't here yet. The baby is still inside mommy."
Keena reached a hand up and rubbed her mom's belly.
"It's time to come out now."
Eddie chuckled softly until the pain from another contraction barreled through her. Keena backed away from Eddie, a frightened look crossing her face, tears in her eyes.
"Mama?"
Jamie opened his mouth to say something when he heard the doorbell. Patrick rushed to the door and opened it, standing in the doorway was Frank. The kids all rushed out the door behind him and piled into one of the big black Suburban's parked out front. Frank nodded at Jamie and Eddie.
"I'll make sure we get to the hospital safely. My detail will make sure of it."
Jamie nodded and Frank moved aside so the couple could get through the doorway. Once the door was closed and locked up, Jamie guided Eddie down the stairs and towards the car.
"Breathe babe. Breathe. That's it. Good. In through your nose and out through your mouth. That's it. Good. I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere."
Helping her into the car, Jamie shut the door and went around to the driver's side. It wasn't until they were almost out of Bay Ridge that Eddie let out a gasp and then a loud whimper. She tried to hold back the panic in her voice.
"Jamie, I think my water just broke."
Jamie felt a lump begin to form in his throat.
"Is it clear?"
Eddie blew out a breath and held onto the door handle of the Chevelle.
"You're seriously asking me that? How should I know! I'm not a doctor!? You are!"
One hand on the steering wheel, Jamie squeezed Eddie's hand and then put it back on the gear shift.
"Keep breathing Ed. I know it hurts. How far apart do you think your contractions are? I can't exactly keep my eyes on the road and look at my watch at the same time."
Eddie took in a breath and continued to grip the door handle. She let out another cry and then glared at Jamie.
"You did this to me! I hate you!"
As they stopped at a red light, he tried to read Eddie's facial expression. She let out another breath and he could see her squeeze her eyes shut and give out a grunt. He put a hand on her forearm and shook his head.
"Ed? What are you doing? Don't push sweetheart."
Eddie, shaking her own head letting a shaking breath out.
"I can't control how this baby comes into the world!"
Jamie was doing his best to keep control of the situation in front of him, but they were still far from the hospital, and he knew he had to do something. A thought came to him as he saw an ambulance in front of them. Eddie was trying to catch her breath and was still gripping the door handle.
"Keep breathing Ed. Help is right in front of us."
As Jamie got out of the car, Eddie reached for her phone and called 911. She managed to get most of her message across to the dispatcher before she dropped her phone. Her phone forgotten, she gripped the door handle and tried to breathe through the pain. Jamie came back to the car and to the passenger side, knocking on the window. Eddie let go of the door handle and he opened it up, revealing two EMT's behind him. She looked at both EMT's.
"Get this baby out of me!?"
Jamie ran a hand through Eddie's hair and kissed her forehead as the EMT's gently placed her onto the stretcher. He knew they were in the middle of traffic. His eyes landed on an empty parking space a few feet away from the car. Jamie took the opportunity and got in the car and parked. Getting back out, he locked up and climbed into the ambulance with the EMT's and Eddie. The one to the left closed the doors and off they went, sirens blaring. Eddie gave Jamie a worried look.
"I thought you left me!"
Jamie shook his head no and reached for some hand sanitizer, rubbing some into his hands.
"I'm not going anywhere."
Eddie's left hand landed on her very swollen belly, and she screamed.
"Get this baby out! I really need to push!"
Professional mask on, Jamie nodded and the EMT in the back of the bus with him handed him a pair of gloves. He did his best to sound reassuring.
"You're doing great sweetheart. I want you to keep breathing. Let's see where we're at with the baby."
Eddie became irritated and glared at Jamie.
"I'll tell you exactly where the baby's at, between my knees! Get them out! NOW!"
The oxygen in her nose was of no help to her. Eddie closed her eyes and took another deep breath. She shivered slightly and then opened her eyes. Jamie had a smile plastered on his face.
"Ok Ed, I see the head. I want you to give me a push. That's it. One more. Keep breathing. Good. Keep pushing. One more and the head will be out. I promise. That's it. Ok, the head is out! Here comes a right shoulder. Keeping breathing babe. You're doing great. Here comes the left shoulder. I've got her! It's a girl!"
Eddie felt overwhelmed suddenly, and tears filled her eyes as Jamie held the screaming little girl over the sheet. The EMT helped Jamie cut the umbilical cord that separated mother and daughter. The tears began to fall as Jamie placed the little girl atop Eddie's chest.
"Hello little one. I'm your mommy. Eddie. Welcome to the world."
Jamie smiled through his own tears. This baby girl was loved just like every one of his other kids. He watched as both mother and daughter bonded, a smiled coming to his face.
"I never get tired of seeing you bond with a baby Ed. Each baby we've had, it's like the first time all over again. You did great babe. I'm proud of you."
Eddie nodded and turned her attention back to the little girl on top of her chest that had yet to get a proper name. She was exhausted. But now this baby girl was here, and she was going to keep her safe no matter what.
