Chapter 26: A Proposal or just a Discussion

The house was quiet for the night and Jamie found Eddie in Sadie's nursery putting her down in her crib. He slowly approached her and wrapped his arms around her waist, placing his chin on top of her head.
"She looks so peaceful when she's sleeping."
Eddie smiled and then tilted her head up and looked into Jamie's eyes.
"You've got that look in your eye bub. What's up?"
Jamie took his arms from around Eddie's waist and turned her around so that she was facing him, taking her hands in his.
"There's something I'd like to talk to you about babe. Let's go in our room so we can talk."
Eddie furrowed her eyebrows and then concern began to line her face. She let Jamie lead her into their bedroom as soon as she closed the door to Sadie's nursery just enough to leave it open a crack. She kept looking at Jamie with a concerned look as they both took a seat on the bed.
"What's wrong?"
Jamie kept smiling.
"It's nothing bad Ed. I promise. You know how Patrick had been looking forward to have a little brother around the house?"
Eddie nodded and her smile turned into a sad frown.
"We've been over this with him. I can't have babies anymore."
Jamie nodded and weaved his way into the conversation.
"He knows that babe. We've already had that conversation. But we're finally in a good place, I transferred hospital's, I'm getting paid more. We can afford more things now. Sadie is getting bigger, I know she would love someone to play with."
Eddie eyed Jamie.
"Are you considering adoption?"
Jamie nodded his head and placed a hand on the back of her neck, massaging it slightly.
"Yes. Now hear me out: There's this beautiful little boy. His name is Liam. He's been in the system for almost three weeks now. He's got no one. No family to speak of. If you're up to it, would you like to meet him?"
Eddie let out an unsure breath. Jamie pulled his phone from his pocket and brung up a photo of him and Liam. She smiled at the photo.
"He's so handsome. What happened to his mom?"
Jamie was about to answer Eddie when there was a knock on the door. Clearing his throat, Jamie answered.
"Come in."
The door slowly opened to reveal Patrick behind it. He groaned as he stepped into his parents bedroom.
"Dad my stomach hurts."
A concerned look crossed Jamie's face as he sat up and patted the blanket on the bed.
"Come here bud."
Patrick slowly sat down on the bed. He winced and shook his head.
"Don't press too hard dad. That hurts."
Jamie ruffled Patrick's hair and gave him a sympathetic look.
"I'm sorry Pat. I'm being as gentle as possible. Ouch bud. You've got an umbilical hernia. It's where your belly button pops out."
Patrick winced and looked at his dad with a worried expression.
"Can't you fix it dad?"
Jamie still had a concerned face and shook his head no.
"Unfortunately I can't bud. We'll have to go to the hospital to have it reduced."
Patrick wasn't usually one to panic, his calm demeanor came from Jamie.
"Does that mean it's going to be fixed? I wasn't born with my belly button sticking out."
Jamie yet again ruffled Patrick's hair and kissed his head.
"We'll get you feeling better, ok?"
Patrick was fast asleep after having spent an hour and a half in the emergency room at Saint Benjamin's hospital. Jamie brushed a kiss to his head and turned out his lamp. On the way out, Jamie whispered towards Patrick.
"Get some rest bud."
Shutting the door, Jamie made his way back to him and Eddie's bedroom. Once inside, he looked Eddie in the eye.
"He's finally asleep."
Eddie lie her head against Jamie's shoulder and planted a subtle kiss to his neck.
"I feel bad that this happened to him bub. Did the doctor who fixed his hernia say why it happened?"
Jamie shook his head.
"Doctor Jacobson wasn't sure. It took longer because of the scan of Patrick's abdomen. It was clear. There were no obstructions of any of his internal organs. These things aren't always easy to explain."
Eddie nodded and placed another kiss to the side of the Jamie's neck.
"I would like to meet Liam. When can we go and see him?"
Jamie's smile grew and he pulled Eddie in for a kiss. When he pulled away, he nodded.
"I'll get in touch with ACS tomorrow."
