"Dad! The eggs are burning!"

Patrick yelled to Jamie who'd gone upstairs to tend to Liam. Going into the kitchen, Patrick quickly turned the stove off and put the pan with the burnt eggs in the sink. Turning the cold water on. He looked at his hand and shook it.

"Ow!"

Jamie rushed into the kitchen, handing Liam over to Cora, who took her little brother and rocked him.

"Did you burn yourself Pat?"

Patrick nodded his head and tried to hide his tears.

"Yeah."

Jamie steered him towards the kitchen table and had him sit down.

"Let me see Pat. This isn't so bad. It's a first-degree burn. Let's put some cool water on this."

Patrick stood up and Jamie steered him towards the kitchen sink. Turning the tap on, Jamie placed Patrick's left hand under the cool water.

"That hurts less. Breakfast is ruined."

Jamie shook his head and turned the tap off, Patrick moving his hand away from the sink.

"Breakfast isn't ruined Pat. Let's put a bandage on your hand, and remember, keep this dry ok bud?"

Patrick went over to the table and took a large bandage from the first aid kit.

"I know dad. What are we having for breakfast now that the eggs are burned?"

Jamie ruffled Patrick's hair and kissed his forehead.

"Pancakes bud. Do you want to get your sisters to help out?"

Patrick nodded his head.

"Ok. But can you please tell Maisie to put a little less chocolate chips in the pancake mix? Maybe it's nothing, but it made me feel weird after I ate it."

Jamie stopped from reaching into the cupboard for the chocolate chips and looked at Patrick seriously.

"Does your throat get itchy? Do you feel like you need to clear your throat a lot? Like something is stuck?"

Patrick shook his head.

"No. More like I get this weird taste in the back of my throat."

A pit began to form in Jamie's stomach. Swallowing the lump in his throat, he put his professional mask on, the one he used when he was speaking with patients.

"Sounds like you have an allergy to chocolate. I know the feeling bud. I'm allergic to olives. Your mom and I, long before you were born, we were eating in a diner, and I ordered a salad. Your mom ordered a bacon cheeseburger. You know your mom, she loves meat. Anyways, the salad I ordered without olives. The waiter didn't write anything down and there were no olives, but a sauce that had olives in it. In less than 20 minutes, I was breaking out in hives, and my throat was getting itchy. Your mom got me to the hospital in time. I would've died if she hadn't gotten me there on time."

Patrick's eyes widened and he swallowed hard.

"That's not going to happen to me, is it?"

Jamie shook his head no and ruffled Patrick's hair.

"Not unless you eat chocolate. We'll have to get you a medical id bracelet. It can make the difference between life and death."

Patrick pursed his lips and shook his head.

"Aw, come on dad, I don't want a bracelet."

Jamie looked Patrick in the eye and nodded seriously.

"There are plain one's bud. It would just have your name, what your allergies are, and a phone number to call a family member in case of an emergency. It helps EMT's know what your allergic to."

Patrick nodded in understanding.

"Don't you have one dad?"

Jamie rolled up his right sleeve of his dark blue sweater and showed Patrick.

"I do. See? This is one is simple. It's not flashy. Just my name, what I'm allergic to and your mom's phone number."

Patrick nodded one more time and seemed to be accepting the idea.

"Ok. You don't think Cora will tease me about it do you?"

Jamie gave Patrick a confident look.

"Of course not. Your sister understands how serious allergies are. I'll explain it to your younger sisters once they come downstairs."

Patrick nodded one last time and watched his dad pull his right sleeve back over his arm. Jamie heard three sets of feet clamber down the stairs, then Cora's voice.

"Maisie, Keena and Kaitlyn, walk down the stairs please!"

Patrick looked at Jamie and rolled his eyes.

"Is it just me dad, or is Cora starting to sound like mom?"

Jamie gave a small laugh and pushed the swinging door to the kitchen open.

"Ok girls, before we get started on making daddy's delicious pancakes, we need to have a talk."

Maisie looked up at Jamie, her lip protruding out in a pout.

"Are we in trouble daddy?"

Jamie shook his head no.

"No baby. None of you are in trouble. We are going to change something with making the pancakes though. Maisie we're going leave the chocolate chips out of the pancakes, ok?"

Maisie's pout still stayed on her face.

"Why?"

Jamie went and explained what was going on.

"Your brother Patrick is allergic to chocolate. If he eats chocolate, he'll get really sick, and he can die from eating it. Daddy can't eat olives. I will get really sick from eating them and end up in the hospital. So, we can't have chocolate sorry honey."

Maisie nodded and then her face brightened.

"Ok. Can we put peanut butter chips in the pancakes instead daddy?"

Patrick would never say no to peanut butter chips in his pancakes. Grabbing the bag of peanut butter chips, Patrick opened them and popped a handful in his mouth.

"Mmm. Dis is readdy good…."

Jamie joined in and smirked, grabbing his own handful of peanut butter chips and popping them into his mouth. Keena put her hands on her hips and gave Jamie a look he'd seen from Eddie thousands of times.

"Daddy! Patrick! Don't eat them all! I want some too!"

Jamie put a hand on the bag of peanut butter chips and gave Keena a reassuring smile.

"Don't worry princess, we have three more bags in the cupboard. But we're only using one bag for our pancakes today. Who wants to help me with the pancake batter?"

Maisie and Kaitlyn raised their hands.

"We do daddy!"

Jamie smiled and kissed both their foreheads.

"Ok, Pat do you want to get the pancake batter started?"

Patrick grabbed for the mix and poured it into a big bowl, Maisie pouring the water into the mix and began stirring. The mix was becoming stiff. She looked up at Jamie.

"Daddy, this is really hard to stir. I need help."

Jamie nodded and placed both of his hands on top of Maisie's, helping her stir the mix. Kaitlyn then poured the peanut butter chips into the bowl and father and daughter kept stirring. A half-asleep Eddie walked into the kitchen with bed head hair and smiled at the kids and Jamie.

"I thought I smelled something good in here. Jamie, where are Sadie and Liam?"

Jamie gave her a reassuring smile.

"Sadie is asleep in the Pack-n-Play and Liam is asleep in the bassinet by the couch. I've got the baby monitor in my back pocket babe. Got it covered. Get some sleep?"

Eddie nodded her head yes.

"Better than I have in the last week. Ooh. Pancakes. Lots of chocolate chips please."

Keena put her hand up.

"No mama! Patrick can't have chocolate. He'll get really sick and go to the hospital."

Eddie became worried and looked at Patrick.

"Pat honey, why didn't you tell me you were allergic?"

Patrick seemed slightly embarrassed.

"I thought it was nothing. But every time I eat it; I get this weird taste in the back of my throat."

Eddie felt a lump in her throat and shook her head and willed it to disappear.

"Honey, that's very serious. Anaphylaxis is not something to play around with. It's dangerous. It's happened to your dad twice now."

Patrick felt painted into a corner.

"I'm sorry mom. Dad said he'd get me a medical id bracelet. I didn't know I was allergic to it until I ate the chocolate."

Eddie pulled Patrick into a hug.

"I'm sorry if I seemed like I got mad at you baby. I'm not mad. You had me scared there for a minute."

Patrick hugged Eddie back.

"I'm ok mom. We're substituting chocolate chips for peanut butter instead."

Eddie let go of Patrick and smiled.

"Even better."

Everything had been a little chaotic this morning, but it was getting better. They were together as a family.
