Author's Note: Hello again. I apologize for such a long hiatus.
One of my close friends, who you may know on here as Reaperman12, passed away a few weeks ago.
For those who don't know him, he was the original writer of this story, originally named A New Future, and Marvin's creator. He passed his story and Marvin on to me to focus on irl things.
He was the one who introduced me to writing and fanfic as a whole, so it stings quite a bit.
This chapter was originally much different, but I made it lighter-hearted in a rewrite.
Anyway, that's everything, I hope you enjoy the chapter!
.
Marvin sighed as he stared at the sunrise from the window of the room he'd been given.
All Might and Izuku had left late last night after a good amount of things had been settled, and Nezu left after running some tests on Marvin to ensure he wasn't experiencing side effects.
Marvin was staying on the Island until his paperwork got sorted out, given he technically didn't exist in the government's eyes.
He didn't exactly like making himself known to the government, a bad habit from his past, but eventually relented since he would need identification to work at UA and help Izuku.
'Last night was exhausting,' Marvin sighed. 'I'd forgotten how tiring it was having to keep my Factor up to dull my senses, and the whole strength deal is annoying.'
In Izuku's body, whenever things became overwhelming, he'd just retreat and let Izuku take over, maybe head into One for All or sleep too.
Now, though, that outlet was gone, and the constant information from his senses was getting on Marvin's nerves.
"This is going to take some getting used to," He mumbled, running his tongue over his fangs, an old habit he still hadn't been able to get rid of.
It wasn't all bad, he mused. His natural body was much more comfortable, and despite the need to hold them back, having his full senses was a game-changer.
Marvin quickly changed and began stretching, clicking his tongue in annoyance at seeing his flexibility had decreased too.
"Bound to happen, I guess…" He muttered in annoyance. "T'was a trained skill after all."
He sighed and began stretching again, silently adding 'Regain flexibility' to his mental list of things he needed to do now that he had his body.
A knock sounded at his door after a while, and Marvin quickly went to answer, wondering who it could be.
Melissa gave him a small smile as he opened the door, and Marvin quickly looked away.
"Shit! Sorry," He said, walking over to the bedside table and putting on his blindfold.
Melissa tilted her head somewhat. "You don't have to wear that, you know? You can always close the blinds."
Marvin shook his head. "It isn't that," He grumbled. "My Quirks works through my eyes too. Anyone I look at… well, it's not fun for them. I have to keep my eyes closed to stop it, and the blindfold helps."
"Wait, you can't turn it off?" Melissa asked curiously. "Midoriya said you had an Emitter-type Quirk, though. Wouldn't your eyes make you a Mutant?"
Marvin shrugged. "My powers don't work the same as those here. I'm from another world, remember?"
"Oh, yeah… but still, the difference is fascinating," Melissa replied. "I wonder if something could be built to help with that?"
Marvin somehow gave her an odd look through his blindfold, his body going a bit tense.
"I– uhhh– maybe?" He said, feeling oddly flustered at that. "I know normal glasses don't work, or any normal type of glass, really. The only things that can block it are things I can't see through."
Melissa's eyebrows went up slightly in intrigue.
"Really? So it's based on your perception of the person rather than anything physical?" She asked, leaning against the doorway.
Marvin made a so-so gesture. "I guess. Thick bulletproof glass blocks it at really low levels, and my Quirk does have a physical part. It's just not fully physical."
Melissa made a noise of recognition, and she looked up for a moment before glancing back at him.
"But how do you see?" She asked. "Do your other senses act as a radar? Or is it part of your Quirk?"
"I can sense the vibrations in the air," Marvin answered. "I guess it's like radar or something, but it's honestly more like a spider's web. The vibrations in the air hit other air molecules and, eventually, my skin, giving me a view of my surroundings."
Melissa's eyebrows raised. "That's incredible! Wait, is that part of your Quirk? Or is it a skill? I've never heard of something like that before."
Marvin shrugged. "It's a skill– learned it from some monks when I was younger. They were teaching me how to airwalk, too, but I never learned that. I was the best at the air radar thing, though."
He winced as the sound of people reached his ears, and he turned back, summoning his earplugs with a flick.
Melissa's eyes widened as he put his earplugs in, and Marvin could almost see the cogs in her head turning.
"You have telekinesis, too?" She asked excitedly. "What even is your Quirk?"
Marvin sighed. "Long story. Let's just say it's a form of energy manipulation for now."
That wasn't technically false since his Factor did have a distinct energy signature, albeit an incredibly subtle one.
"Oh, really? Wait, that means you can manipulate the energy of your body too," Melissa told him.
"What do you mean?" Marvin asked.
"Well, you have energy manipulation and your body's made of energy," Melissa told him. "Which means you could probably manipulate your body's energy."
Marvin stopped for a moment. "I… didn't think of that… but if I can manipulate it like I can my Quirk… Melissa, you're a genius!"
Melissa smiled at him. "Don't worry about it. You want to get breakfast, though? That's actually what I came up here to ask you, assumed you didn't know your way around."
Marvin shook his head. "I don't, at least not any more than Izuku does. Lead the way."
Melissa showed him through the building, idly pointing out different things as they passed, still intrigued at Marvin's being able to see even with his eyes blindfolded.
"What's that?" Marvin asked after a bit, noticing the small notebook Melissa carried in her hand.
'Holy fuck I'm getting rusty, I would've noticed that instantly in my old world,' Marvin reprimanded himself. 'I'm going soft.'
"Hmm?" Melissa held up the notebook with a sigh. "Just some calculations for a project I'm working on. I usually walk around with it when I can't figure out a problem, that's what I'm doing now."
"Can I see?" Marvin asked. "I'm good at math and other stuff like that, maybe I could help?"
Melissa bit her lip for a moment before shrugging and handing it to him.
"Sure, take a crack at it," She told him, pulling a pencil from behind her ear. "Another opinion wouldn't hurt."
Marvin lifted up his blindfold and took the pencil, muttering as he went over the calculations.
"17.53 per hour at a 37-degree angle," He said after a minute.
"Wait, really?" Melissa turned to him, looking over his work.
Marvin nodded. "For the plans you have here, yeah. But honestly… you could probably reduce waste if you dialed back the consumption and made a direct connection to the source instead of the indirect route you're using."
He pointed out the appropriate parts of her calculations, modifying them a bit so she could see.
"Not sure how much it'd reduce the consumption since I'm unsure what materials you're using," Marvin told her. "But anywhere from 8.64 to 15.3% if you're doing what I think you're doing."
"Thank you!" Melissa sighed exasperatedly. "I've wanted to cut that out for ages now, but I didn't know if it would be worth it or not, and I didn't have enough material to do a test run. At least now I know."
She quickly re-did her calculations, her eyes narrowed in concentration.
"Thanks for that," Melissa told him, looking up.
Their eyes locked, and Marvin froze for a moment, waiting for the sudden spike in fear from her.
Melissa, meanwhile, was feeling something, but that something was definitely not fear.
Marvin looked away quickly and closed his eyes, tugging his blindfold down with a muttered apology.
'Shit. Why am I so off my game? Is it this body? I should've had my blindfold down the moment she moved,' Marvin wondered with more than a slight annoyance. 'First, my control's down, then my flexibility, and now my reflexes? What the hell's going on?'
His skin felt uncomfortably warm, and Marvin was intimately aware of Melissa's presence beside him as he panicked.
His emotions made his Factor spike, and it was only through Marvin's quick reflexes that stopped it from hitting Melissa.
Melissa just stared at him as they walked, her brows furrowed.
'Was that the effect he was talking about? I mean… I guess I could see why he wouldn't want that kind of attention,' She mumbled with a flush. 'But is that something to get so jittery about? Maybe he's self-conscious?'
The two continued to the dining hall, idle chatter making up the rest of their conversation, as Marvin was too off-balance to form a deeper response, and Melissa could see it from a mile away.
"Marvin! Melissa!" David exclaimed as they entered, and Marvin winced slightly at the volume.
"Morning, Dad!" Melissa greeted happily as Marvin nodded in greeting, not trusting his voice.
"Marvin, come on, the food here is excellent!" David told him, gesturing him to follow. "I'm sure you'll find something to your liking."
Marvin nodded a bit hesitantly and followed, his heart still beating rapidly in an internal panic.
David tilted his head a bit at his odd behavior and looked at Melissa, who shrugged.
'Must be the new body,' David thought. 'He might not be used to it yet. Hopefully, that passes soon, Nezu said he was making Marvin a teacher.'
Marvin quickly ate breakfast with both Shields, eating surprisingly little before quickly walking back to his room, making an excuse that he'd forgotten something.
He tore off his earplugs and blindfold once inside, panting as sweat dripped down his forehead.
"What… the hell…" He muttered shakily as he stared at himself in the mirror of the connected bathroom.
His face was pale and flushed, his skin gleaming with sweat and his lips dry.
His Factor lurched against his control, and the walls groaned slightly before Marvin reigned it in.
"Holy fuck, Marvin, pull yourself together," Marvin hissed to himself angrily.
He splashed himself with cold water, doing it until he left himself breathless before angrily wiping his face dry.
"Just reinforce with more power…" He whispered. "Kill the weakness… become the weapon I always was…"
Marvin's breath slowed as he whispered the phrase to himself repeatedly, and he shoved his nerves down violently.
His Factor quickly became less volatile as Marvin forcefully silenced his emotions, its power more manageable now.
He let out a slow, deep breath after a moment, his chest freezing cold and his face neutral as he wrapped himself in his Factor like a cocoon.
His Factor became like steel over his skin, and Marvin smiled a bit as the familiar power returned in full force, yet still controllable.
"Better," He mumbled. "Not good, but better."
He changed again, just so David and Melissa wouldn't be suspicious of him suddenly leaving for no reason.
Was it hyper paranoid and most likely unnecessary? Yes, yes it was. But Marvin preferred the term 'properly cautious' instead.
Marvin went back out, finding Melissa in one of the many labs she'd shown him earlier, tinkering with an odd-looking generator.
"Oh, hey!" She said as she looked up, putting a screwdriver down on her table.
"Hey," Marvin replied as he entered the lab, curiously examining the generator. "Is this the project you mentioned?"
Melissa sighed. "Yeah, I'm trying to find a way to create cheap, but still clean and renewable energy. The Island has clean energy, but it's pretty expensive and eats up a good chunk of the budget."
Marvin hummed in thought, staring over the plans Melissa had strewn about the table.
"Do you want some help?" He asked, culling his instinct to look up at her as he asked.
Why he wasn't an expert in engineering by any means, he'd spent a long enough time around Rinai and her projects to at least be passable in the subject.
He couldn't make things, but he could improve and sometimes repair them without issue.
Melissa thought about it for a moment, seemingly weighing out the options.
"I don't have a problem with it," She told him after a moment. "But you literally just got your body back— seems kind of unfair for me to take your help so greedily.
Marvin shrugged. "I couldn't care less, honestly. I did this stuff sometimes back in my old world, so it's not really new to me."
"How about this," Melissa stated. "You're going to be a teacher at UA, right? I presume you're going to be a hero too, since basically every teacher there is one. So if you help me with this, I could do something like help you design and create your hero costume and support items. Deal?"
Marvin went to refuse almost immediately but stopped right before he opened his mouth.
On one hand, he wasn't really sure if he wanted to be a hero; he was just joining UA to keep an eye on Izuku, and Momo to a lesser extent, and the thought of the publicity that came with hero work appalled him greatly.
On the other hand, it wasn't like he had much else to do, and who knows? Maybe those support items could benefit him in the future even if he wasn't a hero.
"Sure, why not?" Marvin replied before leaning closer to the plans Melissa had.
"The generator's design is pretty compact, so as to minimize costs," Melissa told him.
Marvin nodded. "Yeah, if I didn't know any better, I'd say it was a design from my old world… pretty amazing actually, given most of the tech here is worse than my old world's."
The two continued working on the generator, slowly making improvements until they were both satisfied with the result.
As they worked, Melissa couldn't help but notice the odd presence Marvin gave off.
'Both Dad and Nezu were talking about how strong he was,' She thought. 'But then why does he seem so tired? It can't be his body, right? He just got it.'
Melissa tried not to notice the occasional odd shake of Marvin's usually perfectly stable hand or the way he seemed to tense whenever she so much as glanced in his direction, even if he was looking away at the moment.
She also tried to ignore his adamant refusal to look her in the eyes, or the way he always looked away when he spoke, not letting her see his mouth.
"Have you thought of a hero name yet?" Melissa asked after a decent amount of time.
"Hmm?" Marvin replied, pulling down his blindfold as he lifted his head.
"Your Hero Name," Melissa repeated. "You have to have one, you know? Have you given it any thought?"
"I'm not really good at naming things," Marvin answered gruffly, ducking his head.
Melissa thought for a moment as Marvin continued working on the generator, setting it up for a small test run now that the actual construction was complete.
"You could connect it to your Quirk," Melissa told him.
Marvin winced at that. What would that sound like? Nightmare? Sounded like a cringey villain name.
Melissa frowned at his reaction; what could possibly be his Quirk to make him react like that? Should she ask? Would that be considered too much for someone she'd just met?
"If you don't want your Hero Name to be based on your Quirk, you could always make it describe you," Melissa suggested as she helped him connect the generator.
"… I'm not sure if I'll be a hero," Marvin admitted. "I'm not… I'm not really suited for that kind of stuff."
Melissa did a double take. "What? What do you mean?"
Marvin shrugged. "I'm not the hero type, and my Quirk isn't that of a hero. I'm a fighter— a survivor for the most part— heroics aren't really my strong suit."
Melissa stared at him as Marvin flipped the generator on, seemingly ignoring her gaze.
"What is your Quirk?" She asked finally. "I know it isn't just energy manipulation, because if it was, you wouldn't have described it as nasty and nonheroic. What is it?"
Marvin sighed and flipped off the generator, writing down a few numbers.
"Fear," He said finally, not looking up. "I control fear, anger, pain… everything you could imagine as horrible, I can control it. I can make people see their worst nightmares while awake… give them seizures and heart attacks… even make them kill themselves… my Quirk is death."
His voice was raspy and hoarse, barely audible over the slight humming of the generator, and had Melissa not been standing so close, she wouldn't have heard him.
"And your eyes?" She asked.
"Fear. I can see a person's fears and freeze them in place," He replied. "I can enter their mind and control their fears however I wish. I can even give them new fears if I want."
During the exchange, Marvin had slightly released his Factor from his ears, allowing him to hear Melissa's heartbeat with ease.
Surprisingly to him, her heartbeat had only slightly picked up when he'd spoken, and went down again after he stopped. He couldn't sense any fear of him in her… he couldn't… He couldn't sense any fear in her at all.
Marvin glanced up through his blindfold, tentatively releasing a bit of his Factor in her direction, barely enough to make someone nervous, but there.
His eyes widened as his Factor washed over Melissa, seemingly ignoring her. It hit her, and he could tell she was there with it, but it didn't affect her.
Melissa's brows furrowed as a soft wind brushed over her, even though the windows in her lab were behind her, and there wasn't any wind coming from them.
"Is that… is that your Quirk?" She asked, wondering if this was really it.
Marvin gave her a shocked look through his blindfold.
"There's no way…" He muttered, raising his hand.
His Factor shot out sharper this time, and Melissa took a slight step back from the force, but there still wasn't any fear in her.
"You're immune," He whispered, shocked. "You're actually immune."
"Immune?" Melissa questioned, feeling a bit lost. "What do you mean immune? I'm not immune to fear."
Marvin shook his head. "No, it's not that. Some people are naturally immune to my Factor, but even I'm not sure why. You seem to be one of those people."
His heart was racing, if Melissa was really immune, then he wouldn't have to restrict his Factor around her, or have to wear his blindfold.
"Can I just… check something?" Marvin asked hesitantly.
"Sure," She replied as Marvin lifted his blindfold.
Melissa gulped as he stared at her, her face slightly flushed.
'She looks nervous, but it's not from my Factor,' Marvin thought, surprised to see she really was immune. 'Probably normal, most people don't like getting stared at. I sure don't.'
Melissa's bright blue eyes shone behind her glasses, strands of loose blonde hair in her face, which had a bit of grime on her left cheek.
In short, he found her beautiful, though he wouldn't ever have nearly enough confidence to tell her so.
"Yeah… I was right," He said, putting his blindfold back in place. "You're immune."
"T-That means you don't have to wear the b-blindfold, right?" Melissa asked quickly, making him pause.
"I guess not," Marvin replied slowly, head down. "I think I'll keep it on though, don't want to disturb you with my face."
"Don't you mean distract?" Melissa arched an eyebrow.
"Same difference, isn't it?" Marvin answered, a tone of bitterness in his voice.
Melissa gave him a long look, resting her elbow on the table and her head in her hand.
It was his turn to feel nervous now, feeling her eyes bore into his skull in such a way that made him feel completely vulnerable. He felt almost trapped under her sight, his hands shaking slightly as he tried to keep his composure.
"You're not ugly, you know?" She said finally.
"Generator should be done," Marvin ignored the statement, not really believing it anyway. "Just some final tweaks and stuff."
"You're not ugly," Melissa repeated, feeling slightly bolder.
"That doesn't matter," Marvin replied, glancing up through his blindfold. "Just as long as I can help the people I care about."
Melissa smiled a bit at him. "I thought you said you weren't a hero?"
She extended her arm out, and he tensed, subconsciously bracing for the worst.
Her hand came to gently touch the edge of his blindfold, making his skin light up in goosebumps and his breath stop.
"Can I?" Melissa asked, tugging at the edge with her nail.
Marvin gulped, his hands shaking noticeably now, feeling his blood rush in his ears.
He stayed quiet for a while, and Melissa's smile slowly faded as she dropped her hand from his face.
"Sorry, I don't know what came ov—"
"Go ahead," He whispered hoarsely, deciding to bite the bullet.
Melissa's smile bloomed again, and she reached up, leaning over the work table to gently untie his blindfold.
Marvin shivered and tensed at her hands in his hair, feeling a flare of desperate panic attempt to overtake him even as the knot came undone.
Every instinct in his body screamed at him to tense up, to fight back and run as fast as he could, and Marvin nearly listened to them.
Melissa's hands slipped away from him with his blindfold, and Marvin suddenly felt a wave of cold overtake his body, as if something were missing.
He shivered again, swallowing his nerves as he opened his eyes to look at her again.
Melissa's smile was radiant as he stared at her, and Marvin quickly ducked his head as his cheeks grew warm.
"See? That's better," She told him, setting the blindfold down on her corner of the table.
"Thank you," Marvin whispered, far too low for her to hear, even with how close they were.
"Hm?"
Marvin shook his head. "Nothing, just feels nice to have it off."
"I'll bet," Melissa replied in amusement. "Come on, we'll finish this and then I can help you with your hero stuff!"
Marvin gave a faint nod and the two went back to work, though the memory of Melissa's hands undoing his blindfold stuck in his head.
Maybe he wouldn't become a hero, maybe he would. Who knew?
But if becoming a hero meant he could see her smile at him like that again, then he would take all the horrible press and life of constant fighting in a heartbeat.
.
Author's Note: And that's the chapter!
Originally meant for this to show Izuku's and Marvin's perspectives on the separation, but I ran out of time. Izuku's will be next chapter.
Marvin isn't fully sold on becoming a hero yet, but a few more talks with other people should change that. Right now he's just getting the door open for him to become one if he so chooses.
In the original story, Melissa was fully immune to his Factor. In this, I'm making her immune to the emotional part (the fear production), but not the physical part (the telekinesis and so on). Just to make it more fun later.
I'm questioning on whether I should make Rumi immune or not, since her being susceptible to it in the OG story is what caused their meeting in the first place, (in a very questionable decision that I will NOT be replicating) and I'm unsure if its a good idea or not.
On one hand, the idea of both of Marvin's gfs being immune is nice, and definitely would help him be relaxed around them. On the other hand, having both of them be immune seems convenient, plus with so many others being so resistant, it kind of makes his Factor useless against many characters, which severely cripples him in the beginning.
Once Marvin becomes a hero, I'm thinking of having All Might sponsor him, kind of like a Visa (idk if they have that in Japan but roll with it) since Marvin would be registered as American, per his request. Also, he speaks like a freaking New Jersey man in English, so it fits.
I also have art of him! I managed to draw him in the hiatus I took (still sorry about that) and its his canon design. You can see it on the polls section of my profile (sorry, FFN doesn't allow direct image posting tmk)
