Chapter 344
Wo Fat came down the stairs, his eyes on the decanter of whiskey he had in his hand. He seemed more interested in that then he was in Steve, who was being pulled up from the remnants of a poker table by Grover and Chin.
"It's completely frozen solid. This is five-hundred-dollar whiskey, I'm gonna kill her," he was muttering to himself.
Yeah, Steve sort of felt the same way. Except he was more angry that his wife had thrown him off the second floor of his house.
Wo Fat finally turned to him once he was off the steps. "Where is your wife?" he asked. "In fact, why aren't you two at the banquet hall? I would have thought you'd be there by now to get 'Hele and Danny out."
Great so there really was a hostage situation. Not that he really doubted her, he just had wanted more of an idea of what was going on before charging in there.
"She's gone by herself," Steve muttered and Wo's eyes narrowed. He seemed to take in the mess, and the fact that Steve was trying to crack the pain out of his lower back.
"What uh… what happened here?"
"Your sister, went crazy and shoved me over the railing," he growled, because he had a few people there that didn't know about her powers. "She's gone to the school by herself because she wouldn't listen to me."
"I doubt that's it," he said. "You were probably proposing going about the rescue the long way."
"You mean the legal way?"
"Your kid's in a room with a bunch of men with guns," Wo Fat snapped. "Why are you even thinking about the legal way? Don't you care?"
That wasn't fair, he very much did care, but things had to be done in a way where he didn't get arrested at the end of things. Because he very much wanted to watch his kid grow up.
"Okay, okay, just… shut up, shut up and tell me what this is. She said you're working them, what do you know then?"
"What do I know?" he echoed. "I'm not working with them, they just asked for my permission to work on my island."
"Your Island?" Steve echoed. What… what the actual fuck did Wo Fat just say to him? "Just… oh my god! Wo! What the fuck do you know about this?"
"Uh, well… I mean… not a lot. The uh… the leader's name is Talib Abadi, he works with Jemaah."
That was a terrorist group, a splinter group of al-Qaeda. Son of a bitch Rowan was right about that too. Fuck he should have just gone with her. Why didn't he just go with her?
"He's after Ramos' son. He's uh… some important Filipino diplomat. They have the bodyguard working with them. And I think he said this was about Suharto Chandra, he's like some big guy to the Jemaah, I'm pretty sure this is about them getting him out of prison cause he's jailed there. I'm also pretty sure that they're going to execute him which is why they're so desperate," he said with a shrug. "But that's about it."
That was a fucking lot.
But he couldn't remember the name of Rowan's ex?
Grover was standing beside him. "It ain't just Rowan and her kid in there. Danny, his kid and my kid are all at that dance too," he growled. "Why the hell didn't you tell us that this was going down?"
Wo Fat pinched the bridge of his nose. "Well… they paid me not to… I didn't know it was a family affair…"
"You have Sandy tracking us!"
"Yes but I don't ask for updates about you people I only care about my people."
"Nahele is your people!" Steve shouted. "How did you miss that?!"
"I will admit that I didn't do as much research before approving as I usually do… and besides they only called me yesterday. I didn't know their plan until tonight when Sandy informed me Rowan was in their vicinity. I must not have surrounding checkers on Nahele, I thought I did," he said. He had pulled out his phone to look at it, but eventually put it back in his pocket. He looked at the two men in front of him and noted how upset they were.
"Look, mistakes were made, and I fully regret that now."
Steve half paced away from him. "What about Sin Nombre, have you called him?"
"Yes, he's on standby."
"Standby?"
"Yes, I told Rowan, if you wouldn't go with her, to pull him and go in hot."
"Why… why would you tell her…?" Steve thundered while Wo Fat just stared at him. "We wanted her out of trouble Wo, remember?"
"You do realize the longer we stand here, the longer she has to run amok in that situation with Con?"
"Well wouldn't he be able to reign her in?"
"He doesn't reign her in, he eggs her on. The two do not make good choices when together. Hence why I was never brought down to Hawaii with them. Hence why he ended up taking on a building of Yakuza with a pistol and a hunting knife."
Steve just glared at him. "Why in the hell did you leave the two of them alone together so much then?"
Wo Fat shrugged again. "I didn't have a choice," he said. "Are we going to go or do you want to argue some more?"
Steve almost slapped him then and there, but he was right they didn't have time to argue. Steve had wasted all of their time arguing as it was. So, he whirled away going for his truck, with Wo Fat following, heading off to rescue his partner, Grace, Will, and most importantly, his kid.
And probably a bunch of terrorists from his very, very angry wife.

Before the signal jammer went into affect, before they heard the gunshots. Danny had been in the men's washroom with Will and Nahele.
Originally it had just been Will, for the very second that Rowan had left the ballroom, he had gone and approached his daughter and Will where they were dancing with their friends. He had just wanted to talk, that's all, but Grace had been angry. Accused him of embarrassing her, and when her reminded her that it was his job and that was why he was wearing that nametag, she ripped the nametag off of him and stormed away.
Will, however, did not get away as successfully as Grace.
Danny had succeeded in getting the kid into the washroom to ask him what it was he liked about his daughter before warning him that Danny was a cop and interrogated people for a living and would therefore know if Will was lying. Then Will lost signal on his phone, which he thought was weird but as they were sequestered in the bathroom they hadn't realized that everyone else had lost signal as well.
If Danny had been out on the dancefloor, where Rowan had told him to stay, he would have noticed and been able to get them somewhat prepared for what was coming.
But then Nahele came into the room, stepped between him and Will and told him to leave the kid alone. That he had been chaperoning their dates and Will had been super respectful the whole time. Danny also turned his sass onto Nahele, despite Rowan's warnings about opening a portal and dropping him into the ocean, because not only was she not charged, he knew she wouldn't do it in front of the two kids who had no idea what she could do.
Then they heard the gunshots.
Both kids had turned towards the door wide eyed and surprised. Nahele whipped out his phone immediately.
"Sandy where's my mom."
Well Rowan had him well trained.
His phone was quiet for all of two seconds and then the screen went red.
Professional has been removed from the situation. Codename Champ has just confirmed close proximity to hostage situation. Loading up operational procedures for protection and extraction. Stay still until procedures are in place.
And then the little white spinning ball came onto the screen.
Right so Rowan had gotten out but they hadn't. Not good. Or maybe good, because then she could go get Steve. But knowing Rowan she was just going to do something crazy and get herself hurt. Then Steve would freak out and Nahele would cry and it would be a big thing.
Nahele turned wide eyes onto Danny who kept his face devoid of any worry or fear over this.
"It's alright," he said to them. "Just stay here, alright? Just stay here. Rowan's outside I'm sure she'll call the proper authorities, none of you move!"
And then he left them there.
When Will showed up later, just in the nick of time, to knock a guy out with a fire extinguisher, Danny was both relieved and pissed off. The guy in question had a gun with more bullets in it than Danny's and had been pretty much about to shoot him once Danny was out of cover.
But it brought up a very important question and that was.
"What the hell is the matter with you? I told you two to stay put… where's Nahele?" he asked noting that the older boy was not with Will and probably would have pulled a Steve if he had been. Full out tackle the bad guy, worry about shooting him later.
"They took him," Will said. "He… he hid me and then let them take him. They said they were looking for him, someone named Sandy wanted him…"
Sandy was Rowan's app. Right so it was still up and running and it was demanding Nahele. Why wasn't it asking about him and the others?
Probably because they weren't very high on Wo Fat's list of people he cared about.
Oh, he was going to argue with Rowan about that when he got out of this.
He followed Will to the control room where they could access the digital sign outside and change the message, you know, in case Rowan got detained, cause that would have been so like her.
Danny had stolen a walkie-talkie from one of the men that he had taken down. And from what they were saying and what Will told him, they figured out that they were after Jeremy Ramos who was a diplomat's son.
Will helped him find Jeremy and then hid the two kids in a crawlspace to ensure that they'd be safe.
Then Danny did something stupid.
He went to see what was going on with Grace. He just wanted eyes on her, he just wanted to make sure that she was still okay. He glanced into through one of the windows and found Grace away from the rest of the hostages. And that might have worried him if she wasn't clinging to Nahele's arm who had been pushed to the side and was seemingly shielding her with his own body. Yes, very much a McGarrett, he had seen Steve in a similar position many a time, many times with Rowan behind him.
He even had the posture right. Nahele was ramrod straight his eyes darting around the room as if sizing up his options. But Nehele had Rowan's smarts and he wasn't going to doing anything stupid.
And then of course, Grace was holding onto his arm, her finger's digging in through his suit. She had to be hurting him but the boy didn't move his arm or even show it on his face. He just continued to stand in front of her, half stepping in the way to keep the men away, not that they were really paying attention to the two kids, they were just walking near-by as they paced about the dancefloor.
And because he was too busy staring at Grace and Nahele, he didn't notice someone sneaking up behind him.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Conejo had been in California eating when he got the call. All he did in California was eat, sleep and stalk Dr. Grey. It was a boring existence but honestly, after what Dr. Grey did she deserved it. So, he wasn't too mad about it, though he probably should have been pissed to see what his life had been regaled to.
So, he lived for the moments that he was needed.
And tonight he was needed.
Wo Fat had called him, had fucked up, he said. He approved a hostage situation that had Rowan in it. He had got her out of the building and completely didn't notice that the kid had been in the building as well.
He was right, Con had said, he did fuck up. Wo Fat did not appreciate it, but had told him that Rowan was on the verge of a full meltdown. She had gone to get Steve but he wanted Conejo to be alert and ready because if McGarrett wasn't helpful Ro was going to pull him.
Conejo had put on a new white shirt, his best leather jacket, and the rabbit mask. He then armed himself to the teeth.
While he waited for Rowan to need him, to pull him, he had Sandy up and running giving him updates.
Sandy had a lot of information that Wo Fat must have logged in her. She knew who was doing this and why, he knew which doors the bombs were placed on, how many people were in the building and what kind of weapons they had.
They'd be screwed if Con got in there. Their basic ass set up was easy enough to get around and dismantle. He could take them apart in a matter of seconds.
The in a flash he went from sitting on his couch to collapsing to the floor. Rowan had pulled him but hadn't put him on a chair so he just dropped. Thanks Rowan.
When he looked around he found that they were in some back supply area. The lighting was dim and flickering though that could have been from the void.
He took a good look long at her and right away he could tell something was wrong. For starters the whole outline of her was lit up, but not with light, it was something else. Like a film of something else was covering her.
She flickered with the lights, her face expressions changing like it was more than one her phasing in and out of view, all overlapping on top of her. She turned to look at him and while the blue was still in her eyes, one eye had glowing white edges and the other had black around the corners.
What the actual hell was happening to her.
"You uh… you okay Rowan?"
"They have my kid," she growled, a sort of gust of cold air came from her mouth, he swore he could see her breath and that, that was not good.
"I'm going to put you in the room, you just have to shoot them, can you do that?"
Con nodded. "Yes I can, can you tell me where in the room you're going to put me?"
"Stage."
Con nodded again, he had seen the floorplan, it was a good idea to put him there. "How many hostiles inside?"
"Uh… something like five," she said?
"What uh… what happened to the others?" he asked and Rowan turned to him confused. "Sandy said more than ten people with guns, that this guy called in reinforcements. So, where's the other guys?"
Rowan's eyes went full black at that point when she said: "Dead."
Right. Gonna gloss right over that one. "Okay. Good to know. What are you doing to do?"
But Rowan was already blinking, and in a few seconds she was completely gone. But for those few seconds he could have sworn he saw the strings around her, waving off of her, which included one very short black one right between her shoulder blades.
Didn't black mean death?
He was pretty sure it did, but he wasn't sure what a short black string meant.
He pulled out his phone and set Wo Fat a text. One that said that he had been pulled but that Rowan was also having some difficulty. He had ended that text with a hurry, because he needed back up, he needed McGarrett, and Con couldn't understand why that man hadn't come with her.
And then she pulled him into the ballroom and that was pretty much when everything went to shit.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Men had come into the washroom.
Nahele had heard them coming and had hidden Will and then gave up himself. Which was a good plan because the men were specifically in there looking for Codename Champ which he realized now was him.
They took him out into the ballroom but didn't make him get on the ground.
Precious cargo they called him, had to keep him separate. The very first thing he did was ask for Grace. Grace was with him, he kept saying and eventually they let him go and grab her.
He kept her behind him, let her hold his hand. He didn't know where Will was, but he was hoping he was safe in the washroom, or with Danny.
"Don't worry," he said to her. "Mom's on the outside. She's gone to get Steve, just you wait."
And that seemed to calm Grace down a bit but she wouldn't let go of his arm, and she was starting to cut off the circulation.
Then they brought Danny in. Great, wonderful, he had been caught too.
He tried to tell them that Danny was with him too, but they weren't going to let him collect any more people to save.
They were pacing back and forth, they were clearly worried about something. Probably because their phones weren't working. They kept saying that they had done as his Uncle Oz had asked, so why hadn't Sandy been rescinded?
Then the lights started to flicker, the people in the ballroom all began to murmur in worry, even the men with the guns looked surprised by this. And then all of a sudden the lights all started to explode above them. Glass rained down on the ballroom floor, people were starting to scream, getting up and ignoring the men with guns and their shouts to stop moving.
Nahele pushed Grace down and then covered her body with his, because he knew that was what Danny would want.
And when the room was painted in darkness they could make out the crackle of electricity and the glow of something orange.
Nahele immediately assumed electrical fire but the crackle and the orange glow were highlighting the profile of a person.
Or at least he thought he saw a person. The orange glow was jumping around in the darkness, it wasn't until the gun shots started that he really saw what it was.
And he was more than a little surprised by what he was witnessing.
Rowan was sure to herd the bad men to the right area before she pulled Con into that room.
Then she placed herself in front of her child and let Con get to work.
Con opened fire the second he was in that room, taking out all of the men in a short amount of time, while Rowan popped open a shield to protect them from the bullets tore through the group that had been dangerously close to her kid.
She knew he'd see what she was doing but at that point she didn't care. What mattered was that he was safe and that these men paid for putting him in that situation and made her angry.
When Con was done, she lowered the orange shield. He had been walking towards her when she became aware of another man. One she hadn't realized was there. He came in from a different room, so he hadn't been in her purview before though he should have been.
Nahele had stood up, had taken one step towards her. Her accolade and title on his lips and then he saw what she saw.
She recognized him now, the bodyguard, the one who was in on it. He was supposed to be outside, but he was very much inside and very much angry.
She raised a hand to get rid of the man, to put him somewhere but he had come in gun drawn, had seen a little bit of what she was and was aiming to shoot her.
There was an eardrum shattering bang that echoed through the quiet she had created, just as Nahele shoved her to the side. And beside her, her son jerked, his body crumpling to the floor. There was this fine mist of red that coated her and began to pool around her son's fallen form, specifically around his head.
It took her a while to realize what had happened but when she figured it out, when it finally computed in her head, the fraying around her edges stopped being around the edges and started being all of her.
Then she screamed. A bone chilling, earth shaking, and heart wrenching scream only a mother who had just watched her child get shot in the head could make. A piercing scream that could be heard through all the planes of existence she was tied to.
A scream that gathered all the strings that it could and wrapped them around it.
And in a flash everything all went white with a great big booming explosion that took out everything in that room, all matter, all time, all being, and turned it all to strings.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
They were late getting to the banquet hall. Late because part way through the drive there Steve nearly crashed them.
He had momentarily been blinded. This terrible pain came over his chest, his vision went all white, and according to Wo Fat he had screamed, screamed like he was in agony, like he had in that basement Wo had kept him in, all while orange bolts danced up his arms. He was surprised the car hadn't lost all electronics.
Wo Fat had to grab the wheel of the car to keep them from crashing. He then forced Steve out of the driver's seat even after Steve had told him that it was okay.
Steve had no idea what that was but he knew then that something was wrong, very wrong with Rowan But that meant, when they got to the banquet hall, they were late to the party. Steve found the cop cars already creating a perimeter, ambulances lined up in a row, and a stream of people pouring out of the front doors.
They were all freaking out and screaming, something about an explosion going off in the ballroom.
There wasn't anyone hurt that they knew of but the explosion had scared a lot of people.
Wo Fat was immediately away from Steve and disappearing into the building. And though Steve wanted to follow him to find his own wife, Danny, Grace and Will found him first.
He hugged Grace first, keeping an eye out for Nahele or Rowan in the crowd, but they did not appear, while he was hugging Grace or Danny. None of his family appeared actually and that nervousness that something bad had happened doubled.
"Something happened man," Danny whispered when he got the chance. "Something void like."
And then Steve managed to tear himself away from them and rush into the building.
Other than the cops the place was a ghost town, until he got to the ballroom. The door was closed and in front of it was Sin Nombre in a cop's outfit. How… how had he even got that?
"Where's Ro?" he asked him, the pain still lingered in his chest and the fact that the man wouldn't let him in to where he knew she was, was making him more nervous.
"She's uh… she's detained."
"This isn't funny, something void like happened… " "—yes it really did." "…I want to see her… and where's 'Hele?"
"He's with her until further notice," Sin Nombre said. Yeah Steve didn't like this, and Sin Nombre could tell because he swore. "McGarrett, I can't let you in until it's finished."
"Until what is finished?"
"This is very heavily void related and you panic over this shit and if you…"
Steve didn't even wait, he shoved Conejo out of the way threw open that door and then stopped.
He stopped because the entire room was just this blank empty white void and in it was Wo Fat and Rowan. But it wasn't really Rowan.
He knew it the second she turned to look at him.
It was her eyes. They were black. Black with purple swirling white dotted galaxies. Those weren't her eyes, they were the eyes of something else. Something not human. Something that wasn't his wife.
And Nahele wasn't there.
"I… what… what is happening?"
Wo Fat craned back to glare at Sin Nombre who had let him in. Neither seemed surprised by this new look on Rowan, but it was clear, like Sin Nombre, they wanted Rowan far away from him.
"Look, something happened, he's fixing her…"
"Fixing her?" he echoed
"Yes…" Wo said carefully
"Where's Nahele?"
The thing wearing Rowan's face waved an arm and Nahele now stood there. But he was clearly asleep or frozen in time just hovering a good six inches off the floor, being held up by a jungle of pink strings.
"What are you doing to him?"
"We seem to be stuck in a loop," the thing with Rowan's face said in her voice. "She is trying to save him… but she cannot find a way to save herself as well. It's one or the other you see."
"What? What does that mean?"
The fake Rowan waved her hands and like that two orbs hovered above her palms. And in them two realities were playing at once. One where the bullet went through Nahele's skull and one where the bullet went through Rowan's.
"No!" Steve cried. "No! I… what… what do we do? You said it was fixing her, how do you fix a head wound?" He then looked at the thing wearing Rowan's face. "Is it… is it already working?"
The fake Rowan waved her hand again, this time over her face and a large gaping hole appeared where her left eye should be. He could see clear through her head. No.
"Who… what… what are you?" he asked, his breath hitching in his throat, because it was clear that this was not Rowan anymore, not really.
She waved her hand again and the hole in her head vanished. No one said anything until Sin Nombre cleared his throat and said: "The uh… the last time it came around it called itself Fate."
Steve stared at it, Fate really? "I supposed you can continue to call me that."
"Okay… but what are you? What are you doing?"
"Does it matter what I am?"
"I mean you're wearing my wife's face…"
"She's dying, child," he said and a sickly icy bolt ran straight through his heart. "I had no choice but take her over. Unless you'd like me to leave her to the path you've tied her to?"
"NO!" he thundered, of course he didn't. He wanted both his wife and his kid to be okay. "But you can save them both, right?"
"I suppose," the fake Rowan said slowly. "Depends on if she can find a string that saves them both."
"Can we go back a bit?" Wo Fat said. "You said Steve tied her to this path?"
Wait what? No. No Steve did not do this, Rowan's inability to not jump into the middle of a dangerous situations without back up or proper training was why they were where they were right now.
But thing wearing Rowan like a fucking Rowan-suit nodded her head.
"You had the chance to stop this. You chose to let her die," it said to Steve.
"No!" Steve cried, his stomach rolling around, absolutely nauseated with his own nervousness, fear, and guilt. "NO, I'd never…"
"You could have come today. She asked you to help her, begged you to, and you chose to throw her aside."
"No I didn't. I just wanted her to… I wanted a plan… she didn't tell me this would happen!" and then he paused. "Wait… if I come… I come with her do I stop this from happening."
It inclined Rowan's head again. "You do."
"Then… then... fix it that way. Have me take her place…"
For a second they stared at one another, then the fake Rowan raised her hand again and another orb appeared. This one was playing a completely different reality from the other two. One where it was a bullet going through Steve's head. But both Nahele and Rowan were safe.
"If you take her place that will be your path. Is that a path you're willing to accept?"
Steve watched the reality play again. He'd die. That was the other option. He'd die but Rowan and Nahele would be okay.
He nodded without a single bit of hesitation. "Yes. Yes. Take that bullet and give it to me. I don't care. If my dying will save them both I'll take it. Just do what you have to do."
"And you're certain you want to break her heart that way?"
"She'll be alive, that's all I care about."
Those black eyes glimmered. It smiled Rowan's pointed toothy grin. "Well… so be it." and then waved its hand and in that moment, reality ceased to exist until he was dropped once more into the that night's previous events.
