Ruka snuggled herself closer to Yugi, shyly at first but soon was tucked up against His side with Rua book ending her. Queen was sitting on the other side and though she didn't lean against Yugi she stayed by His side as well. Given Yusei and Aki's age, Queen could have been alone for a very long time.
Everyone had been dead for a very long time...
"Sir?" Ruka finally asked quietly into the rustling silence of just them and the roses.
"Yes Ruka?" Yugi continued looking forward, past the roses, blasted buildings and off into the universe.
"What will happen here? If all the people are gone?" she asked her voice growing softer as she spoke until 'gone' was a mere breathy whisper.
A light breeze carried through the area, keeping the roses rustling to provide something in this absolute emptiness of a space. Over time Crow could see how the sound could become mere background noise that no one minded. But for now it was something other than the eerie silence that consumed the area. He had been on the look out for some form of life, a bird seemed the most reasonable. But as far as he could see he was the only 'bird' here and that bothered him as well.
"There's no one else here...So normally, people outside the Ground Zero would move in, because this is not an issue of radiation. However the animals were so spooked that it only set Momentum faster in its spin. The destruction spread out through out the world... so there really isn't anything here that isn't a duel spirit.. Like him." Yugi nodded his head towards a large winged beast that was flying towards them, its dark frame sticking out like a growing sore thumb on the sky.
"Which is a very long winded way of saying I'm going to destroy this reality. Like how one spot of a web can disturb it so greatly that you get the spiders' attention. This world in its state has set off a chain reaction through the universe well... this sector of the universe. I held off on deleting this reality because there's always the possibility that different choices would be made negating the need to destroy this. But it didn't happen, its spreading out; worlds are dying because of the actions here."
Everyone looked at Yugi, even Queen Angel of Roses was left staring at Yugi as the enormity of the situation sank in on them.
A whole world with no single life form, just Duel Spirits because of the actions of a very few. Sure the schools had taught of the evils of Nuclear weapons. But this...
But 'this'...
"So there's life on other planets and they're all going to end now because of what happened in this one small area of the Earth?" Rua asked as he tried to fathom that. Stars with life? Aliens? And they were just going to up and die because Divine messed with Big sis?
Crow was just swaying on his feet as the weight of a universe crashed down upon his shoulders all the worse by the sadness in Yugi's eyes. Staring at God and finding words was impossible so he pulled his gaze away to try to organize his thoughts, That's when he saw the silent tears pouring down as twin rivers on Ruka's face. As clumsy as a new born bird he got his legs under him properly so he could crawl to her. "Hey, Ruka no don't cry..." He reached out with his dirty gloves and tried to wipe the tears from her eyes.
"No, someone has to... Everyone here died, who knew the reason either? They just died with no understanding, and now everyone else in this whole reality is going to do the same thing! Someone should cry for them! Someone needs to care that they're about to die!"
Her words pushed down Rua's desperate attempt at 'not' being a cry baby and quickly the field of mourning roses was consumed with the sound of two wailing children. Crow knelt before them unable to think of anything to comfort the pair, and a glance at Yugi revealed that Yugi, the King of Games and Lord Almighty was also crying as well.
"I know I'm not smart but can you at least explain how Momentum could cause a complete disaster like this?" Crow asked needing to understand, so it couldn't happen again in their own reality.
"So here's an issue Momentum tends to have," Yugi began, his voice humanly choked. "When the program starts its set to focus on Yusei and his emotional state, when he's a calm baby. From there it radiates out and picks up on the emotions around it. Its one of those 'its a great idea but short sighted due to lack of proper information'. Essentially the idea is that it runs and tries to attain a 100% max output of energy that is developed by the positive emotions of people. But the reality is that there's no place where everyone is happy all the time. So really it runs at about 90 percent efficiency from the people here, However; if a natural disaster hits the country it takes the rest of the world's own happiness to keep the program running correctly. After all Japan is a small country compared to a good many. So it drowns out this countries' own fear and despair with its positive emotions which helps bolster the people here to rise back up."
With that Yugi reached up and ran his fingers through his bangs and hair, felt the soft strands run through like all the blood that had been spilled. "The fire didn't do anything it was Aki's trauma that started everything, the disasters that affected the world began here. As young as Aki was the day it happened, she killed everyone in Neo Domino with her powers, leaving her the only one close enough for Momentum to lock in on. Snapping a 90 percent rotation into a dead stop then into a slow Zero Reverse. Because both of them can grow stronger with emotions they just fed off each other until she was summoning on a scale similar to that of your Aki well before her time. It caused panic and the rest of the worlds' fear fed Momentum into speeding up the reverse rotation."
Yugi stretched his legs out and dropped his hands on his knees as he looked about. This wasn't 'his' reality. That one was long gone eons ago. "He thought that by stopping Momentum through out all realities he could stop what he experienced from happeing to others. He hasn't gone back to see the outcome of his actions. Yours is the first time he's looked 'back' on..."
"Who is this guy?" Crow asked, deciding that anger was better than crying, the twins were a wreck, Queen was huddled on herself in tears, this guy made 'God' cry!
Beyond them Aki reappeared with Yusei looking absolutely shattered, pale and disconnected from his surroundings. Leaving Jack taking up the back as the only strong grounded part of that group.
Jack, Mr. 'Call me King' being in the position of mature responsibility was enough to give Crow pause. There was an ironic timing in the sound of wing beats happening behind Crow's head as he watched his friends walk out. Yusei's expression being the one that he fixated on as it brought back the duel where Yusei confessed his guilt over Zero Reverse.
Yugi reached down and grabbed a box of tissue that he generated and extended them to the twins, "here."
"Why, why does everyone have to die?" Rua asked through the mini waterfall formed from his tears.
Yugi's lips tightened in sadness, "so when a time line splits... So you have this and its consequences, but it split time line is different. Here no one helped Aki," with that Yugi turned and pointed behind him further down the street. "In the couple who died over there, instead chose to go to Aki and comfort the child. They braved the growing upheaval and soothed Aki down so that she grieved in a healthy less destructive manner. She's actually grown to be a colder but still more like your Aki type person. In this reality, they chose self preservation over possible death."
The twins paused to process that thought, that a pair of people could have saved the universe if they had just... taken a risk.
"Yes and no, try to... you need..." Yugi blew out a breath in frustration, trying to think of a way to explain without ordering the twins to do it or realize it out of their own natural thought process chewed through his patience.
"Humans are all designed to have self preservation," Queen pointed out with a sniff. "Its actually abnormal for you to care for someone else more than your own lives. Sometimes you can't save anyone and end up throwing your own life away, like my dear dear Aki. She tried to save her Yusei.. for all her power she couldn't save... she..."
"Yusei? Hey bro?" Crow called out in mounting worry as he pushed himself up and went towards the trio. The haunted look that the guys shared was unsettling to say the least.
"How..." Yusei's voice was pained as he turned his gaze from the carpet of red over to Yugi. "How could... why... I..." It was so frustrating to have so many questions and he couldn't even figure out which one he needed to ask first.
"I want you to take a breath, in through your nose, out through your mouth," Yugi instructed and listened as Yusei obeyed. "Good, now another and keep doing that until the panic subsides."
The twins stiffened in alarm and turn to look up at the older teens, their red puffy eyes and tear stained clothes got Aki's attention immediately. Dropping the Rose Duelist to her knees to check on the pair, her voice a soft worried tone.
"Big sister this reality is going to be destroyed!" Rua wailed as he threw himself into Aki's arms with Ruka right behind him.
Aki knelt among the sweet scent of roses and struggled to grasp that thought process. Because she understood it far better than the twins, after all 'Yugi' was God, the being in front of them looked like the average young adult Japanese man. But that was just a facade, a method for Him to communicate with them. So if this reality had to go, a part of her just accepted that as fact, with a gut twist of shame.
It was looking at Yusei and how he was doing as ordered that bothered her. Pale, drawn, but this wasn't their reality. He couldn't.
He could...
He was...
"Yusei, stop it. This isn't our reality or our responsibility." Aki replied firmly, her voice causing him to turn and look at her, his gaze so deeply haunted. "Stop it. We can't help this reality, the twins are real and they need us. So come over here."
Crow watched the pair and nodded in answer, "Listen to our sister Yusei! You were a kid in this reality, you both were, saying 'you could have done something' that's no better than blaming yourself for Zero Reverse in our reality. You gotta cut this out man, you can't save the world by sacrificing yourself!"
Yusei stood there quiet as his mind kept spiraling down possible pathways as he tried to find some form of acknowledged punishment. That need to be recognized as the one at fault brought his gaze from Aki, to Crow then to Yugi's profile. The guy wasn't looking at him though and merely shrugged.
"I take crimes case by case, what happened here has no weight on your own actions. Admittedly dead kids make their way faster to me because you have far less time to 'mess up big time'. I usually just take the kids in, some times they come out evil but. I've had lots of kids, whole ships full of them, cancer, murder, you name it. But me holding 'you' the Yusei of another reality responsible for the actions here? Nah..."
"HEY! People! Humans! Oh and God!" A male voice blurted out from above them, excited and curious as his wings finally provided a new sound for them to listen to. "Hi! It feels like its been forever!"
"Is that a worm with a beak?" Rua asked with a small frown.
"Looks more like a centipede," Ruka replied before adding, "with a beak."
The twins, confused and shaken from their darker thoughts by this lively voice turned to look at Yugi. Who turned to look away from them in answer, "Hey, I'm sure they can tell you who they are themselves..."
Angel Queen of Roses leaned back so she could see the twins and gave a faint reassuring smile. "His name is 'Black Winged Dragon'. He's always been a chipper sort..." She explained faintly, "Travels the world looking for others..."
Only there wasn't 'others'...
'That's not good,' Crow ruminated while pulling his attention from the strange black winged beast back to Yugi. 'A chipper dragon might not be the mood Yusei needs right now.'
The dragon was such a contradiction with a bird beak face, a black mane and a long worm body. Yet there were six legs, that looked more like crab legs in gray and some random gray feathers. Then there was the 'wings' that looked more like red and black scythe blades on rods attached to the body.
It was a design that was baffling to the others, though they shoved their confused musings to the back of their minds. Because Black Winged Dragon had gotten Yusei's attention as he landed with a raucous fanfare. The 'feet' clacked onto the broken stone and he was such a wobbling looking dragon. He kept moving them shuffling them about to keep upright while his wings were spread out to help him further.
"Are you moving to this world? Did God make you? You want to be friends?"
And that was only beginning of the questions the dragon began with the most cheery voice that really didn't go well with the moody black and red of its feathers and well him. Each question making Yugi smile a little more as his head sank down.
"In some realities, this is what you call a 'perky goth'," he offered before looking back up. "No Black Winged Dragon, they are merely traveling from their reality to another. They're looking for the person who basically caused this to happen." Yugi explained with a casual tone, not raising it despite the fact that the dragon loomed so far above them all. Yet even with such a distance the dragon heard as his beak fell open.
"You're going after that guy? You sure?" He arched his neck down and began looking among the Dragons. "Wow you look rough. But I'm serious, I've traveled this whole world and never found a living person since this went down. Anyone strong enough to do that isn't someone you should face. You're human after all... Fragile..." He lifted one of his feet up and made this jabbing gesture towards the people below.
"He hurt Rosie..." Stardust bemoaned before putting his paws under him to push himself up. "He, whoever this 'he' is, killed off a 'planet' full of people and its spreading through space here. If nothing else he needs to be made aware and face some form of judgement for this!"
"I'm not saying Stardust is 'wrong'," Archfiend called out, "But we now have a dominatrix dragon and here's a perky goth dragon. We got fairies, Robots, doms, and a disco ball... Please, whatever you do, 'do not bring this dragon with us!" he pleaded.
"That is the greatest idea ever! Thanks Archfiend!" Rua called out, a little more cheer in his voice even as Archfiend wailed in protest. "Hey Black Winged Dragon, you want to go to a place with people right?" The boy called out as he pushed himself to his feet.
"HE
HEL... YES! Totally would love to go to a place with people!" Black Winged Dragon began dancing in place bringing to mind images of overly happy dogs.
"So why not," Rua turned to face the others who were a bit surprised given their expressions, "lets take him and Queen Angel of Roses with us!"
"Rua?" Ruka blurted out in surprise, even as she thought about it. The world, the 'universe' was going to end, and if they could save these spirits... But... "Is that fair...? Umm Lord Yugi? What will happen to this realities' Duel Spirit World?"
"You two," Jack rumbled though he was curious sooo...
Yugi gave a casual little shrug, as though what he was debating with himself at first before he decided to explain. "Well it varies, the cornerstone of the world was the tablets of human souls that created the first 'duel spirits' in Kemet. So by destroying this reality those souls would be released into the Afterlife and enter the normal cycle of life, death, and rebirth that all life experiences. As for the souls created by people, they just go to sleep before the reality is 'shut down' if you will. Like a computer really. Program off."
