Two dirty urchin girls ran down the street laughing and plopped down on the grass outside a church.
"You promise we'll be best friends forever, 'Sette?" asked the brunette urchin.
"I promise," answered the blonde one.
Eponine and Cosette pinky swore.
"What are you brats doing out here?" a booming voice came from above them.
Cosette and Eponine sat up and Thenardier grabbed Cosette's arm, yanking her up.
"Papa!" Eponine yelled as Cosette winced.
Thenardier held his finger in front of his daughter, "shut up!" He grabbed Cosette by her hair and threw her to the ground toward the way back to their Inn. "You get to work!" He commanded her.
Cosette scurried away and ran back to the Inn.
"You," Thenardier said, turning to his daughter, "I need your help with another robbery."
Thenardier grabbed Eponine by the collar of her dress and dragged her along with him. Eponine kept turning back trying to spot Cosette back home safe.
"Stop dragging your feet!" Thenardier growled, "Eponine!"
"Eponine!"
Eponine awoke to her father's voice. She had just opened her eyes when he grabbed her by the collar of her dress, forcing her to stand.
She had fallen asleep on the stoop of their house again because she hadn't made enough money to earn her way in for the night.
(It was actually a run-down, abandoned, two-story shack Thenardier had claimed as theirs. It was hidden away in a corner. People passing by never seemed to notice it).
Epoinine had only made enough money to get her siblings permission to enter.
She stumbled down the stairs and finally gained her balance when her father let go of her.
"Come on now, stop dragging your feet. I need your help, pockets aren't gonna pick themselves."
Eponine caught up to her Papa and turned back to see her siblings waving at her from their window.
Eponine smiled at her siblings and gave them a thumbs up, assuring them she'll be ok. Gavroche smiled back at Eponine and Azelma looked at her unsure. Eponine gave her sister a small smile and turned back to follow her father. As soon as she turned her smile dropped and she wished she didn't have to steal from people to make her Papa happy.
Nonetheless, here she was again in the streets stealing from unsuspecting people.
They made their way down to Le Marais when Eponine was starting to get hungry.
Eponine walked around watching people eating at restaurants, and looking at food through grocery shop windows.
She was staring at a father and daughter enjoying a baguette when she bumped into someone.
"Pardon, Monsieur."
"It's alright," answered the old man she had bumped into.
He helped her up and she thanked him, looking back at the man and his daughter eating.
"Are you hungry, child?" He looked over where she was looking and looked back at Eponine.
"No, I'm quite alright. Thank yo-" in that moment Eponine's stomach decided to rumble.
"Here." The old man took out a baguette from a grocery bag and handed it to Eponine.
"Oh, Monsieur, I couldn't-"
"Please take it. You need it more than I do."
Eponine stared at the baguette, smiled at the man and slowly reached for the baguette. Once she had it in her hands she ripped a piece and took a bite. It was fresh and warm and she smiled, savoring it.
This blissful moment was cut short when a woman screamed, "my jewels! My precious jewels!"
Eponine and the man turned towards the woman, frantically looking around with her hands around her naked neck.
Eponine's eyes widened and she turned to the man, "thank you for your kindness, monsieur, I must go now."
The man turned to Eponine, then the woman, then back at Eponine. He reached his hand out to her and said, "follow me."
Eponine turned to a crowd that had formed around the woman and decided to follow the man.
As Eponine followed along, other townspeople started yelling about missing items, "my purse!"
"My fan!"
"My gold pins!"
Eponine started looking around, she knew her father had to be around for she knew she hadn't stolen any of those items.
"Eponine!" Eponine stopped running at the sound of her name. The man looked back at her and they both turned to where the voice came from.
Thenardier looked at his daughter from across the road then pointed at her to go.
Eponine released herself from the man's hold on her hand and ran away.
The man stared at Thenardier and before he could react, Thenardier ran away.
The man started to run toward where Thenardier had gone but suddenly a gust of wind, blowing some nearby trash got in his face and Thenardier had disappeared.
The man stomped his foot, "Damn you Thenardier!"
"Sir!" The old man turned and a woman dressed in robes ran to him, "Did you find him?"
The man groaned and clutched his face as he turned from a posh old man with a long beard, glasses, top hat, and a hooked nose, to a slightly taller, younger man with a growing beard and roman nose. As the man held his nose from the transformation, he took off the fake glasses.
"This damn polyjuice potion is weak! Remind me to fire Kramer later-"
"Sir, did you find Thenardier?"
"I saw him!" yelled the man in frustration. "I saw him, alright? But I simply couldn't believe my eyes and he ran away before I had time to catch him." The man threw the hat he was wearing on the floor and started to pace.
Suddenly another gust of wind blew with the sound of a loud crack.
The man and the woman turned to see an old man with robes and a long beard sitting at the square a few feet in front of them.
The man and the woman looked at each other. The man rolled his eyes and made his way to the old man.
"What are you doing here?"
"It's nice seeing you too, Inspector."
"Drop the act, old man. What do you have up your sleeve this time?"
The old man turned to the inspector and gave a small smirk, "I happen to know where Luc Thenardier resides."
"Stop it with the games, Albus. If you really know something, tell me now."
"Now, now, Javert. Take a seat-"
"Albus I don't have time for this-"
"Sherbet lemon?" Albus asked the Inspector, taking out a candy.
The inspector let out a long breath and Albus put the candy back in his pocket. "Go on. Sit."
The inspector sat down, "What do you want, Albus?"
"A deal."
"What kind of deal?"
"Leave the children alone, Javert. It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be. They didn't ask to be given the life or the parents they have been dealt."
"Where are you going with this?"
"The eldest turned eleven just this month."
"Get to the point, Albus!"
"Inspector. Think about it. She just turned eleven. September is next month."
"Hogwarts? No. No way. We're not letting the children of that, that terrorist, into the grounds of that school. The school which my own child attends-"
"Inspector, you know very well that every child with magical powers has the right and are welcomed to attend Hogwarts. It's a law, is it not?
"I am the law."
"No, you simply enforce it. Therefore, you must follow through."
Inspector Javert huffed and Dumbledore spoke again, "let the children attend Hogwarts with no obstacle and I give you my word, you will have Luc Thenardier locked up in Azkaban for good."
"Alright then, tell me where he is and we'll get the children to London."
"No need to worry about that, I have someone on the job already."
On the other side of town, Eponine had run home as fast as she possibly could and still her father had somehow, yet again, beaten her to it. She always thought it strange how quickly he could get from one place to another. Even with all the shortcuts and hidden alleys or routes she knew of, there was no way she'd ever be able to get places as fast as her Papa could.
"What took you so long? Get inside!" Thenardier scolded his daughter.
As she was dragged inside she saw all the jewels, gold and valuable products her Papa had taken at the square, laid out on the table.
Before she could make her way upstairs, to her siblings, her Papa stopped her and put his hand out in front of her. She rolled her eyes and took all the money she'd taken, out of her pocket and into his hand. Her Papa took it and pushed her upstairs.
Once Eponine opened the door of her and her siblings' bedroom, a dirty hand went over her mouth. At the same time as the hand came, she saw a big man at the end of the room and before she could scream another pair of hands covered her mouth and pushed her towards the door, closing it.
Before Eponine could fight the hands off of her, Azelma came into her line of view putting a finger to her mouth, telling Eponine to keep quiet.
Eponine gave her sister a confused look, "Eponine, please, you can't make a noise," her sister whispered.
"Ep, I promise to take my hands away, if you promise to not scream," added her brother, Gavroche.
Eponine looked down at her brother looking betrayed, she then looked back at the man who was standing far away from them with his hands up, looking innocent. He then gave her a small wave with a nervous smile and Eponine looked back at her siblings.
"Eponine, he's here to help. I don't know why, but I trust him, Sis," said Gavroche.
"Do you promise not to scream?" asked Azelma.
Eponine looked at the man, then back at her siblings and sighed nodding 'yes'.
Gavroche took his hands away from his sister's mouth and Eponine took a slow breath.
Eponine side eyed her siblings and looked at the big man across from her, "who's your friend?"
"This is Harry-" Azelma started, but was cut off,
"Hagrid," Hagrid said.
"I thought you said Harry." Azelma said.
"Yes, and I corrected you many times."
"Hagrid's a funny name." said Gavroche, making Hagrid huff.
Eponine took a closer look at Hagrid and she didn't know why, but she felt like she could trust him. And this was not an easy feeling for her.
"Hello, Hagrid, I'm Eponine."
"I know who ye are."
"He knows our names and he knows Papa," said Gavroche.
At this Eponine raised an eyebrow and stood in front of her siblings, "are you a friend of Papa?"
"No! Merlin, no. But we come from the same world."
"Uh, yeah, I think we all do, it's called planet Earth," scoffed Eponine.
"He really hasn't told you lot anything, has he?"
"What are you on about?" asked Eponine, frustrated.
"Ep, he says he's taking us to his world!" exclaimed Gavroche.
"What?! What's that supposed to mean?! Are you some kind of creep?" Eponine looked at Hagrid, pushing her siblings further behind her.
"I'm here to take you away from Thenardier and to a better place."
Eponine's eyebrows dropped for just a second then furrowed and she walked up to the giant man pointing her finger at him menacingly, "If this is some kind of joke-"
"Eponine," Hagrid's gentle voice threw her off. "You have to trust me. I only mean to help you and your siblings. I promise."
Eponine was used to disappointment and broken promises. Her father had once promised to always love and care for her, her one and only true friend had promised that they'd be best friends forever and she'd come back for her, and her childhood friend had willingly joined in on her Papa's robberies after promising her he'd always do the right thing.
Eponine always found it hard to trust and believe in people, but something was telling her to trust this complete stranger, "Ok."
Azelma, Gavroche and Hagrid smiled.
"Ok?" asked Hagrid.
"Ok. if you say you're here to help my siblings and me, then ok." Everyone stayed in a moment of silence. Eponine looked at Hagrid, "what do we have to do?"
"Start packing."
Packing was very easy, the room consisted of one beaten up mattress on the floor, which all three siblings shared and one dresser with three drawers.
Eponine, Azelma and Gavroche took everything from the drawers and threw it into a suitcase that Hagrid had brought.
As Hagrid was closing up the suitcase, loud steps were heard coming up the stairs.
Eponine's eyes widened, "hide!" she whispered to Hagrid.
Hagrid looked around and back at the children in confusion.
Eponine pushed him next to the door, since the door opens inward it'd be a great place for him to hide. She then grabbed the suitcase and threw it under a blanket and her siblings leaned against it to hide it with their bodies. Lastly, she sat on the ground, in front of her siblings, with her back facing the door just in time for the door to open and her Papa to shout, "come on Eponine!"
Eponine turned towards the door, "let's go!" urged her father, "again?" she asked.
"Don't you think it's dangerous? We left not too long ago, they're probably looking for you-" Eponine was cut off by her father storming towards her and making her stand by pulling her hair, "that's none of your concer-"
Suddenly, all hell broke loose.
Eponine felt the hand release her hair and turned at the sound of a loud thump.
Her Papa was on the ground, "Hagrid? You bloody half-blood!" Thenardier kicked Hagrid's leg, making him tumble backwards and fall on his butt.
Eponine went to help Hagrid up and shouted at her siblings, "get the suitcase!"
Azelma and Gavroche lifted the suitcase from under the blanket and as they saw Thenardier getting up, Azelma swung the suitcase at him, bringing him back down.
"You ungrateful brats!" yelled their Papa.
The siblings finally helped Hagrid up and ran out the door.
As they went down, Thenardier's gang appeared downstairs, each carrying something that could be used as a weapon.
They froze and heard Thenardier getting up and heading to the stairs. Hagrid yelled at the kids to duck as he pointed his umbrella at Thenardier. All they saw was a flash of light before Hagrid told them to hold on to him. A loud cracking sound was heard and they were out of their place faster than you could say 'magic'.
The siblings and Hagrid landed in a beautiful open field.
The siblings looked around and before Eponine could open her mouth, Hagrid started, "I will explain later, you have to keep believing in me. Right now we have to get out of here and head toward town, hand me the suitcase." Azelma handed Hagrid the suitcase and he started walking.
The Thenardier children looked at eachother, not knowing how to react. Eponine looked at Hagrid, walking away. She looked at her siblings again and nodded towards Hagrid, she made long strides trying to catch up to him and her siblings followed soon after.
Back home, Thenardier had woken up and was throwing a tantrum fit for a five year old. His gang was trying to calm him down but he swore at all of them and forced them to leave.
He paced back and forth until a thought came to him. He went up to his room and took a small mirror off the wall. There was a hole on the wall and he put his hand inside.
When he took his arm out, in his hand was a long box. He opened it up and took a long, bent stick out of it. He marveled at it and smiled like it was going to solve all his problems.
"You will pay for this, brats."
Hope you enjoyed, thank you for reading. We will meet the rest of the Amis in the next chapter, stay tuned!
