CHAPTER 212

The allosaurus paused at the opening of the drum and sniffed its edges before proceeding to stoop in. Upon placing its first firm foot inside the sifter the whole cylinder shifted with a groan and the sound of dirt and metal grinding together. The allosaurus recoiled its step and watched the drum settle. From within, Kyra was seeing the dinosaur's hesitance and hoping that the instability of the drum would be enough to deter the beast. She soon observed that it wasn't.

The allosaurus made another attempt to enter and this time planted its foot without retreat. As the carnivore brought its other foot inside, the drum rolled, and the dinosaur stumbled in place. Kyra and Seth tumbled with the movement of the sifter. As the cylinder rotated clods of dirt and rock began to crumble from above. Rays of sunlight danced through the mesh walls. The machine groaned and then settled. Kyra tripped to her feet and grabbed Seth. She could feel that her grip was weak and clumsy. Hoisting Seth, she began to drag him toward the far end of the drum. The allosaurus took another couple of steps, and the sifter rocked and rolled. There were several fins running lengthwise along the inside of the drum that were designed to agitate the dirt as it spun. As the sifter rotated one of these six inch tall fins came around and tripped the allosaurus onto its side. When the carnivore slammed down more dirt crumbled from above.

Kyra had fallen as well and was shielding her face from the falling soil and rocks. She jumped back to her feet and continued dragging Seth. At the far end of the drum was another opening with a conveyor belt positioned right in the center. Kyra saw that if she could get up onto it and pull Seth up with her the allosaurus wouldn't be able to squeeze through the more narrow opening.

Behind Kyra the allosaurus stood up and bumped its head on the top of the drum. It ducked lower as the sifter began to roll again. The allosaur's legs wobbled like it was walking on marbles, and it crouched even lower. Now it was waddling like a fat duck, keeping its feet splayed out on the lower arching sides of the drum, and it was working. With each short cumbersome stride the sifter rocked one way and then the other like a sailing ship.

More dirt continued to rain down on Kyra and Seth. As she drug him further toward the far end they swayed and tumbled. She had almost reached the conveyor belt, but the allosaur was proceeding steadily now and wasn't far behind.

After a few more turbulent feet she had reached the conveyor. She tried to lift Seth, but the Sifter shifted and she fell. A large chunk of dirt and rocks fell at her face. She shook it away and ignored the fact that her forehead was bleeding. Kyra grabbed Seth and hoisted him by the armpits. It was a three foot ledge to get him up on the belt, and she was struggling as her arms were growing weaker. Turning her head, Kyra saw that the allosaurus was getting closer and closer. She was not sure if she would make it.
