CHAPTER 289
The guards around the fence had become alert. It seemed they were almost standing at attention. Within the closest treetops the leaves and branches rustled. There were growls, barks, and shrieks, and the sound of claws striking wood was loud as velociraptors scaled the upper foliage. As if hurled by catapults the hunters launched out of the trees and landed amongst the guards. Cawing and cackling they dispersed around the perimeter of the rooftop.
The initial volley of raptors crowded the fence, but it was clear that there were more coming. The individuals along the back of the building were parting to make way for others. Something bigger and heavier was climbing through the trees. The sound of its claws and its effect on surrounding branches was distinct.
Vulture emerged in a rush of feathers and scaly skin. Her weight slammed against the rooftop, and she quickly raised her body, puffed her chest, and spread her wing feathers. With this intimidating display Vulture unleashed a bellow like the shriek of a thousand buzzards coming together in one vile noise. Around her the velociraptors mimicked her performance before all fell silent.
The sound of another utahraptor scaling the trunks was all that could be heard. With a burst of plumage Falcon exploded from the high foliage. Her landing was heavy, like Vulture's, and the thick eagle-like feathers that shrouded her body shifted around her with a bushy independence. As Falcon straightened up she ruffled her plumage, and it conformed to her hide. Angling her face toward the human captives her dense coat now moved with her, expressing fierce muscle tone and powerful precise motion.
Falcon examined her prisoners with deep scrutiny. There was bitterness, resentment, and anger in her stare, and still behind that there was curiosity. Beyond the curiosity there was a frustration in the obvious barrier of communication. Falcon let out what might have been a sigh, and then she turned toward the gate at the corner of the building.
The velociraptors in front of her made way as she advanced. Every emotion seen in her eyes reverberated through her footsteps.
Within the enclosure Dr. Johnson was hit with a realization that made her stomach sink. As she watched Falcon approach the gate she was dawned with the understanding that the raptors were coming in.
