Chapter 151: The Last of Us
"Or it can be a place where you must be 80% taken over by cordyceps just to survive."
"Now hold still. This won't hurt a bit. You'll just feel a pop as I crack your skull open."
"I trust your professional opinion, doc," Kuaidul joked, the scalpel alarmingly close to the dotted line the surgeon had mapped around his head.
He wasn't in distress. It would've only been alarmingly close for someone else in his boots.
It was a fun thought experiment though.
Just my luck they didn't invent anesthetic in this universe!
Kamishiro Rio broke down the door.
"Doctor!"
"What are you doing in here? S-stay back!"
"Let that man go."
"Y-you don't understand! He's our only hope for a cure! He's the only person since the infection started to exhibit a 0% infection rate!"
"This kind of recklessness, I expect out of the Atomic Fireflies. But you, Dr. Faker? What are they paying you?"
"You'd doom us all? For a newcomer you met yesterday? I am not doing this for money! My work…My obligation as a father is to reverse this horrible disease before it eats me alive!"
"At the cost of a man's life?"
"The advancement of science often calls for sacrifice. To save Haruto, I will cross any and all lines! Nothing is off limits!"
"I get your desperation. My brother…Ryoga, he…"
"Don't!" Faker rebuffed angrily. "If I don't find a cure, Haruto will…No, I've already found it! Leave here at once!"
"I'm sorry for your son, Dr. Faker, but he wouldn't want you to be a killer. And that's what you'll become, if you go through with this procedure."
"You sound like Kaito. 'Find another way.' 'There has to be another way.' I tried. I tried everything, and then this opportunity came along, and I'm taking it!"
The wall of the slipshod operating room collapsed without warning. A distraction Rio exploited to elbow Faker nighty night, while the nurses scattered every which way for their lives.
"Oh, Rio! Am I happy to see you!" Kuaidul beamed from his forehead with glee.
Schmaltzy dialogue. Again, he hadn't put himself in a position of veritable danger. But he played the part. For observational purposes.
"It's been one day since we met, and you're already the talk of Heartland? You should be in show business!" She frantically undid his restraints.
GROOOOAN!
"Oh boy! Looks like we have a bloater!" Kuaidul warned.
Rio dove to duck the fungal swipe.
"Nomumumu…"
"Well, if it isn't Nomuratodamas!"
Damas had mutated a second eye, and Nomura was overtaken from top to bottom by green tendrils and yellow gills, his body and robe interknit into a black mycelium.
"Friend of yours?"
"He's seen better days."
Rio turned the metal table abruptly, and rammed it into Nomuratodamas with Kuaidul still lashed down.
"Duel…Duel!" The hybrid lifeform burped spores.
"Duel, he says."
"Yes, I can hear him! Can't be helped…In that case, there's no choice! Duel Disk, set!"
"DUEL!"
"Volume 102, Number 53: The great plague of the maritime city will not cease until there be avenged the death of the just blood, condemned for a price without crime, of the great lady outraged by pretense!" Damas assumed vocal command. "My turn! Draw! I summon Resonance Insect!"

Nomuratodamas sent Parasite Caterpillar from his Deck to the Graveyard, as Resonance Insect had been banished.
"Oh ho! 3400 ATK!" Kuaidul yapped on, still still strapped to the table.
"I can't attack on the first turn, but I can use Beargram's effect! All face-up monsters on the field that aren't Insect-Type or Plant-Type are destroyed!"
Guard Penguin was dragged into an antlion pit and perished.
"Turn end."
"My turn! Draw! I summon Aurora Wing!"
