9/27 Saturday

Days Until Haru is sold off: 14

With preparations fully complete, they had decided that Haru would deliver the calling card tomorrow, and then they would take Okumura's treasure as soon as possible.

Despite having everything planned out, she found the stress that she was feeling unavoidable.

As class ended for the day, she decided to head to Dr. Maruki's office to try and help manage her stress.

… And maybe, learn a little bit more about his methods.

She arrived at Maruki's office, the atmosphere of his office already having an effect on her.

"Ah, Niijima-san, hello." Maruki greeted. "Have you come to help me out again?"

"Maybe in a bit." Makoto replied. "I was just hoping to relax for a bit."

"Oh, of course." Maruki nodded. "Things must be quite stressful for you. Feel free to relax, and help yourself to some snacks… or, what's left of my snacks, anyway."

Makoto glanced over to Maruki's snack bowl, which was almost completely empty.

"Ren?"

Maruki nodded.

Makoto sighed, taking one snack for herself.

She engaged in some small talk with Maruki about school and home for a while before Maruki changed the subject.

"Speaking of school, Niijima-san…" Maruki trailed off. "Something that I've been curious about is those Phantom Thieves that the students keep talking about."

Makoto felt her fists tighten.

"What is your opinion on these Phantom Thieves of Hearts?" Maruki asked. "Stealing desires from criminals and forcing them to confess… It's quite interesting."

"Have you taken an interest in them?" Makoto asked, attempting to take the conversation away from herself.

"I have." Maruki nodded. "I feel as if their methods and the goals for my research must be connected. That's why I'd really like to analyze their methods."

"You mean with the calling cards and everything, right?" Makoto asked.

Maruki nodded. "They say that they're able to 'steal desires'. Do you have any idea how something like that would be possible?"

Makoto tried to remain calm.

"…I couldn't possibly imagine." she answered. "What about you?"

"Hmm… well, if there was some material proxy for desires…" Maruki theorized. "Say, do you remember the story I told you about cookies?"

"A person's desires changed the way they were tasted." Makoto recalled. "Would this be similar?"

Maruki nodded. "Desires have a large effect on cognition. Without the desire, the cognitive perception of the cookies would be gone. Likewise, I believe the Thieves somehow directly 'steal desires'. It makes me wonder if you could take away anything you wanted from someone… trauma, personality, memories… anything, really..."

He smiled at her as he said it, but the idea of stealing all of things from people rubbed her the wrong way.

"It's certainly… very intriguing." Makoto replied.

"It is, isn't it!" Maruki agreed. "I'd like to be able to talk to one of the Phantom Thieves one on one, but either way, I think I'm very close to completing my paper. Thank you for all the help you've given me, Niijima-San."

"… Of course, Dr. Maruki. Anytime." Makoto said.

She could feel Maruki's gratitude.

COUNCILOR CONFIDENT: RANK 7

She said goodbye to Maruki and went home for the day.

9/28 Sunday

Days Until Haru is sold off: 13

Haru's legs shook as she walked through the hall.

As Okumura's daughter, everyone had thought that handing her father the calling card would be the easiest way of getting him to see it.

It made perfect sense, of course.

If only her legs didn't feel like lead at the moment.

"Father…" Haru whispered.

"What is it?" Okumura asked.

"There were a bunch of these outside." Haru muttered, handing him one of the calling cards.

"What the?!" Okumura gasped. "This is… a calling card?!"

"You know what it is?" Haru replied.

"Hrmp… you can't go a single day without the news blathering on about these 'Phantom Thieves'!" Okumura scoffed.

Her father opened the calling card, reading out the contents out loud.

"Sir Kunikazu Okumura, the great profiteering sinner of greed." Okumura began. "Your success and global fame exists due to the tyranny you rain over your employees. Thus, we have decided to make you confess all of your crimes with your own mouth."

Okumura shook his head, scoffing at the letter's contents.

"I-Is that from…" Haru trailed off.

"Yes. The Phantom Thieves." Okumura confirmed.

"Father, I…"

"Leave me, Haru." Okumura commanded. "I have to make some calls."

Haru watched as her father pulled out his phone, calling someone and demanding that they have the police investigate.

Not wanting her father to grow suspicious, Haru quietly slipped away.

Deep within his palace, Okumura's shadow shook with rage.

"This is absurd!" the shadow snapped. "Why, of all people, would they chase after me?! Thousands of other company presidents, and they choose me!"

"It seems like you're having a bit of trouble, Okumura."

"Who's there?!" Okumura's shadow turned around, gasping. "Y-You."

"Me." the other man replied.

A black masked man stepped out from the shadows.

"It seems like you're having a bit of trouble." the masked man noted. "Even with the help of Sugimura's shadow, you still couldn't take down those Thieves."

"It's not my fault! There are so many of them!" Okumura shouted. "They even managed to corrupt my daughter, convincing her to join them!"

"Your daughter?" the masked man repeated. "She's joined them?"

"Y-Yes, she has!" Okumura stammered. "Haru is with them!"

"Interesting…" the masked man grinned. "Regardless, this is your palace, so it's your responsibility to overcome a potential failure."

"I… I'll take care of them, I promise!" Okumura insisted.

"You'd better…" The masked man warned. "Or else…"

The masked man unsheathed his weapon, pointing it at Okumura's face.

"The Diet will decide your fate." The masked man said.

"I am the Diet!" Okumura scowled.

"Not. Yet." The masked man calmly said.

"Y-You… if you want those thieves gone so badly, why don't you help me yourself!?" Okumura's shadow snapped.

The masked man paused for a moment before letting out a laugh.

"Hah… alright then." The masked man smirked. "I'll have to cover my entire face just in case, but I suppose I could step in if things get… dire."

The masked man gave a dark chuckle as he left the palace…

Makoto quickly made her way to Leblanc as soon as she had finished her breakfast.

They would all quickly meet up and discuss their plan before heading to Okumura's Palace.

She could tell that the others had made it here before her, as she could hear an argument as she accented to the attic…

"For the last time, if I make it any bigger, it will no longer conform to the golden ratio!" Yusuke declared. "And that would be disastrous!"

"Golden ratio?!" Futaba gasped. "Is that a Jo-"

"No, it's not a reference!" Yusuke cut her off.

Makoto cleared her throat, gaining their attention.

"Thank you for coming, everyone." Makoto said. "Is everyone ready and prepared?"

Everyone nodded, fully prepared to begin the final part of the operation.

"Alright then." Makoto nodded. "Then let's quickly discuss the plan and move out."

She went over everything they needed to know before leading everything over to Okumura Foods, going into the palace for the final time.

They swiftly made their way through the palace, making their way back to the treasure room.

When they arrived, however…

"Hey, where's the treasure?!" Morgana cried. "Where's my sweet, sweet treasure?!"

"Up there!" Futaba shouted.

Looking upwards, Makoto saw the treasure being lifted into the air by some sort of device.

"After it!" Makoto shouted.

They began to chase after the treasure, but were quickly intercepted by more robots.

"Stop right there! We won't let you get to Okumura!" the robot shouted.

"Ugh, we don't have time for this!" Makoto snapped. "Yurlungur! Brain Jack!"

Makoto brainwashed each of the robots.

She had been worried that it wouldn't work, considering how fanatically loyal they were to Okumura.

Thankfully, the spell still managed to affect them.

The robots immediately stiffened, staring at her… before bowing down.

"One of us! One of us!" the robots chanted.

Makoto barely suppressed her anger as she heard the others snickering behind her.

"Just block the path so no one can escape or chase us!" Makoto commanded.

"As you command, glorious leader!" the robots cried in unison.

The brainwashed robots blocked off the entrance to the room.

"Now's our chance!" Makoto cried. "We can't let Okumura escape!"

The group quickly chased after Okumura, cornering him in a large room with a massive ship inside.

"This must be some kinda docking station!" Morgana realized.

"Come out, Okumura!" Ryuji shouted. "We've got you cornered!"

To Makoto's surprise, Okumura did just that, stepping out from behind his large ship.

"Okumura…" Makoto glared. "Exploiting your employees… and even your own daughter!"

"You knew the guy you were makin' her marry was scum!" Ryuji snapped.

"All of this because of your insatiable greed!" Makoto yelled. "What do you have to say for yourself?!"

Okumura sighed, uttering only one word.

"Karoshi…"

"What?" Makoto asked.

"Karoshi… do you know what it means?" Okumura asked her.

"Death from overwork, right." Makoto replied.

"Correct." Okumura nodded. "It's become a big enough phenomenon for people to have coined a term. To society at large, it is something that cannot be helped. No one bothers to make a fuss about it, because it's just how things are. Something natural. Someone pointless to fight against. Like an earthquake or a tsunami."

"But they shouldn't be that way!" Makoto argued. "That shouldn't be how things are!"

"Yeah, just because that's how things are now doesn't mean it can't change later!" Ryuji added.

"So what are you hoping to accomplish?" Okumura scoffed. "Do you think changing my heart will accomplish anything meaningful?"

"What are you talking about?!" Ann shouted.

"I already told you. The 'abuse' that you're accusing me of is hardly unique to Okumura Foods." Okumura pointed out. "If you wanted to get rid of these practices, you'd have to change the hearts of thousands of people across thousands of companies!"

Makoto frowned. Much as she hated to admit it, he wasn't entirely wrong.

"Even so…" Makoto trailed off. "As I said, it's not just your employees that you mistreat, but your own daughter as well."

Okumura scoffed. "I must use every tool and resource in my possession in the most efficient manner possible."

"So is that all I am to you?" Haru asked. "A tool?!"

"No, right now you are worse than that." Okumura answered. "I have no use for a disobedient daughter!"

Everyone glanced at Haru, worried about what her reaction would be.

"I see…" Haru whispered. "I just have… one more question, then."

"And what would that be?" Okumura asked.

"Every time our company would get involved with some sort of scandal, another company would, without fail, always get involved with another, larger scandal." Haru muttered. "Employees and managers would act out, company secrets would get revealed, and other such things."

"And…?" Okumura trailed off.

"Were you behind these incidents?!" Haru cried. "Were you the reason they had those scandals? Just how much of our fortune… is built off of ruining the lives of competitors and employees?!

"… I did what I had to do." Okumura stated. "That's just how this world works."

"It's not how things were before! It's not how Grandpa did things! He was the kindest, most charitable man I have ever known!" Haru cried.

"And what did that get him?!" Okumura snapped. "A lifetime of poverty!"

"But…!"

"Enough of this!" Okumura shouted. "Begin the countdown."

"Destination set. Beginning countdown to launch…"

A robotic voice resonated throughout the room, and a giant timer appeared on the ceiling, and a giant hatch in the floor opened up, revealing Okumura's ship.

The ship itself was in the shape of a two-headed bird. The black color of the ship reminded her of a crow…

The ship was adorned with bright red, blue, and green orbs that reminded her of gemstones.

"T-Minus 30 minutes until launch."

An image of a constellation in the form of a large building projected from the ceiling. Presumably, it was Okumura's destination.

"The Diet Building…" Haru muttered.

"Hahaha!" Okumura laughed. "Once that timer hits zero, I will take my place amongst the highest echelons of society."

Okumura climbed atop a floating chair in the room, rising several feet in the air.

"It's over, Haru! I have the high ground!" Okumura declared.

"You underestimate my power!" Haru replied.

Okumura sneered as he saw them prepare to attack.

"I don't have to get my hands dirty… I have loyal employees for that!" Okumura declared.

Suddenly, multiple robots started pouring into the room, ready to attack.

Ryuji and Yusuke met their charge head on, holding them back while Ren and Ann lent support.

Haru blasted one of the robots with a Psio spell, which proved to be very effective.

"I see…" Makoto muttered. "Red Rider!"

Makoto summoned a sinister skeleton riding a horse. It fired off a Mapsio spell, lifting the robots into the air before slamming them all into each other, causing a massive explosion.

"All right, we got em'!" Ryuji cheered.

"Don't get too excited!" Okumura grinned. "Those were the easy ones!"

"T-Minus 28 minutes…"

Makoto frowned, keeping an eye on the timer as more robots poured in.

"Let's try to find their weakness, everyone!" Makoto commanded.

They hit the robots with spell after spell, and while they did damage, none of them seemed to be particularly effective.

"T-Minus 26 minutes…"

"Recharge!" Okumura ordered.

The robot's eyes lit up, and they suddenly began to heal off all of the damage that they had inflicted.

Before they could stop them, the robots finished recharging, preparing to attack again.

"What the hell?!" Ryuji snapped.

"Ugh, it's not fair when the enemy gets to heal!" Futaba grumbled. "Only we should be able to do that!"

"They're on the defensive!" Makoto realized. "They're buying time for Okumura to escape!"

"Then let's hit them hard and fast!" Ren exclaimed.

"But let's be smart about this too." Makoto stated.

She fired a few shots at the robots alongside Ren.

The robot seemed mostly unfazed, however, and fired right back, grazing her shoulder.

Makoto grimaced, trying to think of a plan.

Running through the options they had already tried, she realized that the only type of elemental spell that they didn't have consistent access to were Bless skills.

Thankfully, she had come prepared, just in case.

"Daisoujou!" Makoto called.

A creepy skeleton in monk robes appeared.

"First of all." Makoto muttered. "Give me my health back!"

Daisoujou gave a menacing crackle as Makoto used its powers to drain one of the robots dry of health and magic.

Ryuji slammed his club into the drained robot, finishing it off as Makoto prepared another spell.

"Makouga!" Makoto shouted.

Sure enough, the bright light proved to be very effective on the robots, allowing the others to quickly finish them off.

"T-Minus 24 minutes…"

"Fine then! Let's see how you deal with these ones!" Okumura roared.

Two large robots charged into the room, immediately firing at them.

"These ones look pretty durable…" Ren frowned. "Oracle, give me a boost!"

"You got it!" Futaba shouted.

Futaba boosted Ren's attack right before he blasted the robots with a powerful Maeiga spell, knocking the robots to the ground.

"You ready, Queen?" Ren asked.

Makoto nodded. "Pazuzu!"

Seeing Makoto bringing out a Persona with curse skills, Ren prepared to help out.

"Call him a Smeargle…!" Futaba started.

"… Cause I'm passing the baton!" Ren finished.

Ren passed the baton to Makoto, who blasted the robots with another powerful Maeiga spell.

One of the robots was destroyed, with the other one on its last legs.

"Grr… this isn't working." Okumura muttered. "Focus your fire!"

The robot acknowledged the command, readying its gun.

"Target the most versatile one!" Okumura shouted, pointing at Makoto. "The barbaric, dark-haired women!"

"I'LL SHOW YOU BARBARIC!" Makoto roared, slamming her fist straight into the robot's chest so hard that it pierced through its metal body and came out its back.

Okumura continued to call forth more robots, but Makoto always had an answer.

"Belphegor, Bufula!"

Morgana would supply the group with healing and items to keep them topped off.

"Hell Biker, Agilao!"

As the group fell into a rhythm, wave after wave after wave of robots fell with ease.

"Hariti, Zionga!"

Oil and broken robot parts littered the ground.

"T-Minus 15 minutes…"

"N-No! That's not enough time!" Okumura panicked. "I need some help! I need-"

"Everyone, scatter!" Futaba frantically cried.

Everyone ran away, narrowly avoiding a blast of nuclear energy.

"What the hell was that?!" Ryuji snapped.

Toooooooooooo…

The group heard a strange sound coming from above.

"A trumpet?" Makoto questioned.

Glancing upwards, she saw what appeared to be a skeletal angel playing a trumpet.

"Ah, perfect timing." Okumura grinned. "This will surely take you down!"

"This shadow doesn't look like anything else we've seen in the palace." Morgana frowned.

"It's a lot stronger than most of the other shadows we fought here." Futaba warned. "Be careful, guys."

The shadow played its trumpet yet again, trying to zap them with bolts of lightning.

"Ahhhhh!" Morgana screamed, getting hit with a stray bolt.

"Mona!" Makoto exclaimed. "Panther, heal him!"

"Got it!" Ann nodded.

The shadow quickly moved to stop her, firing off numerous fireballs.

"Makarakarn!" Haru cried, reflecting the flames just in time.

The shadow hissed as the flames started to cover its body.

Haru wasted no time capitalizing on the shadow's predicament.

"Psio!" Haru cried, striking the shadow with psychokinetic energy, flinging it into a wall.

Haru quickly fired her grenade launcher, causing a huge explosion when it hit the shadow.

"Ha! That wasn't too bad at all!" Ryuji grinned.

Yusuke nodded. "And now, all that's left is-"

"Everyone, watch out!" Futaba screamed.

Before they could move, a massive orb of almighty energy landed on top of them, sending all of them flying across the room.

Makoto slowly got up, wincing at the pain, watching as everyone else slowly picked themselves up from the ground.

She quickly healed everyone and prepared to go back on the offensive.

When she turned to look at the shadow, however, her eyes widened in shock.

A bright red aura had enveloped the shadow, causing them to let out crazed roars as they clawed at their head in agony.

"W-What is this?!" Morgana gasped.

"G-Guys, I'm getting some crazy readings off of those shadows!" Futaba warned. "I-It's almost like…"

"Almost like what?" Yusuke asked.

"L-Like they're having psychotic breakdowns!" Futaba cried.

"What?!" Makoto gasped. "But how?!"

"I don't know, I don't know!" Futaba exclaimed.

"Everyone, calm down." Ren urged. "They may be strong, but we're stronger."

As if it had taken offense, the shadow immediately began firing off nuclear blasts at them.

Makoto tried to think of a strategy while frantically dodging the attacks.

"Ah!"

She stumbled on one of the broken robot parts on the ground, quickly switching to Anat to endure the attack.

As she picked herself up, an idea struck her.

"Maybe…" Makoto trailed off. "Mona, blow everything on the ground at that shadow!"

"You got it!" Morgana nodded.

Morgana used a Garula spell to blow all the robot parts and oil towards the shadow.

It interrupted the shadow casting a spell, but did very little damage.

The shadow, however, was now covered in oil.

"Panther, burn it!" Makoto shouted.

"Right!" Ann replied, unleashing a powerful Agilao spell.

The fire easily spread throughout the shadow's body as soon as it made contact with the oil.

As the shadow wailed in agony, Makoto quickly fired off a Freila spell, dealing immense damage due to the shadow's burns.

"Everyone, strike it now!" Makoto commanded.

They struck the shadow with an All Out Attack, knocking it to the ground.

Only for it to slowly pick itself back up.

"H-How?!" Makoto gasped.

"Don't worry, it looks really weak." Ren pointed out. "One more solid hit should-GAH!"

Suddenly, the shadow struck them with lightning once again, dealing heavy damage.

"I… can still… fight…" Makoto grunted, healing herself as she slowly got to her feet.

"RAGGGGGGH!"

Having resisted the previous attack, Ryuji charged forward.

The shadow tried to block, but Ryuji simply knocked the trumpet away before slamming his club into the shadow.

Finally, the shadow succumbed to all the damage, dissolving into a black ooze.

"Thank… Goodness…" Makoto panted. "We beat it."

"Just what was that shadow…" Yusuke muttered. "Was Okumura really holding back such a powerful shadow this entire time?

"There's no time to discuss that now." Makoto replied. "We have to focus on Okumura.

"T-Minus 3 minutes…"

"Looks like we have time to spare." Ren smirked.

Okumura glared in pure hatred.

"Don't think you've won! I still have one last trick!"

"Oh, come on, seriously?!" Ann cried. "Doesn't this guy ever give up?!"

"It seems that I'll have to call forth my last line of defense... Come out, my daughter!" Okumura commanded.

"Daughter…?!" Haru gasped. "But I…"

"Yes, father. Whatever you desire."

Another Haru stepped out of the shadows, only this one was another robot.

"Haru, you must destroy them all, including that imposter, no matter what! Understand?!"

"Yes, father."

"… So, this is how you view me, father." Haru whispered.

Haru pulled out her ax.

"Then allow me to correct that faulty perception!"

Haru clashed with the cognitive version of herself.

"Will you not obey?" the cognitive Haru asked.

"No. I am my own person now!" Haru refused. "I will not be a puppet any longer.

"… Incomprehensible." the cognitive Haru replied. "I exist only to obey."

Haru scowled. "You know… you shouldn't annoy a girl with an ax!"

Haru severed the cognitive Haru's arm from their body, easily overpowering them.

It was clear that the cognitive Haru wasn't strong. It was only a desperate attempt by Okumura to stall for time.

Seeing how ineffective the cognitive Haru was, Okumura began to make a mad dash towards his ship.

"Haru, you know what to do! Sacrifice yourself for me!"

"Yea father, whatever you desire." the cognitive Haru said.

"Hey! That bastard's getting away!" Ryuji shouted.

"Self-destruct protocol activated."

"What?! Self-destruct?!" Makoto shouted.

"Even his own daughter?!" Ren exclaimed.

"Maybe we should deal with the Cognition first!" Morgana suggested.

"T-Minus 1 minute."

"There's no time!" Ryuji cried. "We gotta do something!"

The cognitive Haru began to glow a bright white, emitting steam as it tried to grab onto Haru.

"Get off of me!" Haru cried, grabbing the other Haru and tossing her to the ground.

"T-Minus 10… 9… 8…7…"

An idea suddenly appeared into Haru's head.

"Psio!" Haru shouted, lifting her cognitive self into the air…

"6…5…4…"

…And flung it right at her father's ship.

"Obey… I… must obey… father!" the cognitive Haru exclaimed as they flew through the air.

"3…2…1…"

"Haru, NO!" Okumura cried. "Get back! Don't-"

*BOOM*

The cognitive Haru collided with the ship, immediately exploding on impact.

"Everyone, get down!" Makoto shouted.

Everyone braced themselves as the resulting explosion sent ship parts flying everywhere throughout the room.

And among the ship parts, they saw Okumura himself and his treasure being flung out of the ship, landing hard on the ground.

"No!" Okumura shouted. "NO NO NO!"

Now defenseless, Okumura could only watch in terror as they surrounded him.

"That's enough, father." Haru calmly said. "We're going to be taking your treasure now."

Realizing that he had been bested, Okumura could only sigh in resignation.

"And so marks the end of Okumura Foods… in the end, I am just one more in a lineage of failures." Okumura sighed. "I will rescind the marriage offer and confess to my crimes. That is what you want, correct?"

"Father…" Haru whispered. "Let's go back… to bring a family again. Please."

"Haru, I… I'm so sorry!" Okumura cried.

"Guys, I've got the treasure!" Morgana shouted as he finished searching the debris.

"Good." Makoto nodded. "But before we leave, we have to know… did you really order mental shutdowns and psychotic breakdowns on competitors?"

"I did." Okumura nodded.

"By who?" Makoto asked.

Before he could answer, the entire palace began to shake.

"The palace is collapsing!" Yusuke shouted. "We have to leave now!"

"You guys go on ahead." Makoto told them. "I still have questions for Okumura."

"But Makoto, there's no time!" Ren protested.

"I'll be fine. Anat can still turn back into a motorcycle if I need her too." Makoto replied. "The rest of you have to leave."

Ren sighed. "Is that an order?"

She nodded. "Mona, make sure they're safe!"

"Got it!" Morgana called, transforming into a van. "Let's move, everyone."

As they left, Makoto turned towards Okumura. "What do you know about the people you were working with? The ones that eliminated your compilation?"

"I only met the hitman that carried out their orders. But if I had to guess… someone with the power to carry out all of this would undoubtedly be someone with an incredible amount of power or influence." Okumura stated. "I believe… that they are heavily involved in the political world. A member of the Diet, even."

"The one behind all of this is a Diet member?!" Makoto exclaimed. "That-"

Makoto's eyes widened, and suddenly, she forcefully grabbed Okumura and tossed him aside.

"What was that to?!" Okumura shouted. "I gave you the information you wanted!"

"Get behind me." Makoto said, ignoring his protests.

"What are you-"

Suddenly the sound of a gun being fired alerted both of them.

"Ose!" Makoto called.

Makoto summed yet another persona in her arsenal just as the bullets were about to hit her.

The bullets harmlessly bounced off of her due to her Persona's resistances.

"You need to run. I can't fight and defend you at the same time." Makoto warned.

"Run where?!" Okumura shouted.

"Doesn't matter!" Makoto yelled. "Anywhere that's not here?!"

Okumura quickly picked himself up, running out of the room, Makoto blocking any bullets that were fired.

Using her third eye, she could see a figure hiding in the shadows, preparing to chase after Okumura.

"Don't move!" Makoto shouted, firing a warning shot.

The figure slowly stepped out of the shadows, their fist clenching in anger at her interference.

"So, you're after him?" Makoto frowned. "Sorry, but he's our target!

The figure holstered their gun, realizing that she was unaffected, and instead, pulled out a blood-red sword, and charged right at her.

Nearly their entire body was covered, so there was very little Makoto could glean from their appearance.

There was, however, one thing that stuck out about them to her.

And that… was their sinister black mask.
