10/10 Wednesday
After classes ended for the day, she decided to head straight to Leblanc.
With exams coming soon, it would be good for her to have a quiet place to study in.
She greeted Sojiro when she arrived, ordering her coffee and curry as she sat down at the booth.
After a half hour of studying, however, she heard the door to Leblanc opening.
She saw Futaba dragging Ren into Leblanc, Ren letting out a groan.
"… Do I want to know what happened to him?" Makoto asked.
"He tried out a new shake they had at Big Bang Burger." Futaba answered. "He's been grimacing ever since he drank it."
"... I see." Makoto muttered.
"Oh, is that why the two of you stopped by here late?" Sojiro asked.
"Not just that!" Futaba exclaimed. "There was something else too!"
Futaba pulled out her phone, showing Sojiro the screen.
"I found a whole buncha dirt on my uncle!" Futaba exclaimed. "I have his bank info, transition history, credit details, and a lot more!
Sojiro frowned. "How on Earth did you get your hands on all of this?"
"Hacking, of course!" Futaba beamed.
"F-Futaba, you shouldn't go that far." Makoto warned.
"B-But…" Futaba trailed off.
"That's a criminal offense, Futaba!" Sojiro snapped. "There's no way we'd be able to use this in court!"
Futaba seemed to shrink under Sojiro's gaze, looking guilty.
"I know how badly in debt he is." Sojiro sighed. "He's not going to try to get custody back, so don't pull stupid crap like this."
"But he's still exploiting you for money." Ren pointed out. "He doesn't actually care about Futaba at all."
"Even so… it's true that I wasn't able to help you when you needed it most, Futaba." Sojiro sighed. "Maybe there's someone better out there to take care of you."
"W-What, you don't think that I belong here?" Futaba gasped. "Am I just in the way…?"
"No, that's not what I-" Sojiro began.
"Do you not want me either, Sojiro…?!" Futaba cried.
"That's not what I meant!" Sojiro insisted. "I just that maybe… for your sake, you might be better off somewhere else."
"F-Fine then! I don't want to be with you either!" Futaba shouted. "I still have Makoto and Ren and all of the others! You can just stay here alone with your dumb coffee beans!"
Futaba ran up the stairs into the attic.
"F-Futaba!" Makoto cried.
Sojiro sighed. "She likes you guys a lot more than me. Makes sense though… you guys are the ones who saved her."
"That's not… you did everything that you could." Ren argued. "She would have been even worse off without you."
"Even so… it feels like I spent more time in this cafe than I did trying to talk to Futaba." Sojiro frowned. "Making Wakaba's curry recipe… and the coffee… it feels like they were just excuses to stay distant."
"Boss… I think… regardless of the past… what matters most is that Futaba's happy, right?" Makoto asked.
"That's true, but-"
"I think… that she'd be happiest with you." Makoto pointed out.
"Maybe you're right, but… could you make sure she's all right." Sojiro asked.
"We will." Ren nodded. "But… if you're serious about wanting to be there for her, I think you should talk to her too."
"Yeah… I'll talk to her soon." Sojiro promised. "I'll just cool down a bit with a smoke first."
Ren nodded, walking up the stairs to the attic, as she followed close behind.
"Makoto. Ren." Futaba mumbled.
"Are you ok, Futaba?" Ren asked.
"… Yeah, I'm fine." Futaba muttered. "Not…"
"Futaba, about Boss…" Makoto trailed off.
"Mom used to talk about Sojiro all the time." Futaba frowned. "How good he was at making curry, how interesting he was to talk to… Mom would always smile when talking about him."
"She must have really liked him." Makoto commented.
"Y-Yeah…" Futaba stammered, holding back tears. "I-I said some horrible things to him… nothing that happened is his fault. If anything, this situation is my fault. Sojiro lost a crapton of money because of me."
"Futaba, that's not your fault." Makoto insisted. "It's your uncle's."
"But I still screwed up, didn't I?" Futaba muttered. "I wanted to stay with Sojiro so badly that I tried hacking to get my uncle's info."
"If you want to stay with him that badly, I think you should let him know." Ren advised.
"Yeah… you're right." Futaba nodded.
The three of them turned around, hearing a knock on the door.
"Futaba… is it alright if I come in?" Sojiro asked.
"Y-Yeah, that's fine." Futaba replied.
Sojiro entered the room, Futaba hanging her head as he did so.
"Sojiro… I…" Futaba trailed off.
"Look, I'm sorry about what I just said." Sojiro apologized. "I'd like for you to stay with me for as long as you want… but only if you want to."
"As long as I want…" Futaba muttered.
"I know you might have fun spending time with people your own age, but I promise that I'll do my damnedest to try to be there for you." Sojiro promised. "So… Will you stay with me?"
"Ah…" Futaba trailed off.
She appeared to be deep in thought… only to immediately start laughing.
"It's so weird seeing you get all emotional, Sojiro!" Futaba giggled. "It's not like you at all."
"It's cause he's a big softie deep down." Ren chuckled.
"Alright, alright, that's enough, you two." Sojiro said, shaking his head. "You two are as exhausting as ever."
Makoto giggled at their banter, happy that the three of them were getting along.
"But… Sojiro, I know I've caused you a lot of trouble…" Futaba mumbled. "But I really do want to stay with you."
"Futaba…" Sojiro trailed off.
"Sorry for not saying that earlier." Futaba said. "And… thanks for taking care of someone like me."
"Are you sure that I'm good enough?" Sojiro asked.
"I wouldn't want anyone else!" Futaba quickly exclaimed.
"Well, you heard her, Boss." Makoto smiled. "I don't think it could be any clearer than that."
"Heh… guess not." Sojiro grinned. "I'll make sure that you don't regret this. If you ever need help again in the future, come to me. I promise that I'll protect you from now on. Feel free to stay living with me for as long as you like."
"Mm-hmm!" Futaba nodded. "I will. And I'll look forward to sorta living with you two, Ren!"
Futaba's phone began to ring, and she gasped as she saw a notification.
"Gah! I totally forgot! There's a livestream I was going to watch! I'm out of here!" Futaba exclaimed.
Sojiro smiled as Futaba zoomed off.
"I've been such a fool." Sojiro said. "All my life, I've always tried to take the easy way out in order to avoid these types of conflicts."
Sojiro turned towards Ren.
"I wasn't there for Wakaba when I knew something was wrong, and I wasn't there for you at first either." Sojiro admitted. "Instead, I kept going on and on about how you can't fight back against the laws of our society. How you should just accept the hand you're dealt in life."
"That's… it's alright." Ren insisted. "I understand why you said what you said."
"You shouldn't sell yourself so short, Boss." Makoto said. "You've still taught us plenty of advice, and you've always been there to talk to."
"I should be thanking you two." Sojiro expressed. "For showing me what's really important in life."
She felt closer to Sojiro.
HIEROPHANT CONFIDANT: RANK 7
They talked for a little longer before heading downstairs.
"I'm going to be heading back home myself." Sojiro said. "Don't stay up too late, ok?"
"Are you worried about me?" Ren smirked.
"He really is a softie." Makoto giggled.
Sojiro just grunted in response, scratching the back of his head.
Before he could respond, they heard the door to Leblanc open, Haru stepping inside.
"Um… is this a bad time?" Haru asked. "I came here because I thought one of you would be here…"
"No, it's fine." Makoto said. "What did you need, Haru?"
"Umm… could we talk in the attic?" Haru asked.
"Of course." Ren nodded.
The three of them went up to the attic, Haru letting out a nervous breath.
"Is this about your father?" Makoto asked.
"Yes, that's right." Haru nodded. "He's been feeling under the weather these past few days, but today… he suddenly decided to hold a press conference."
"A press conference? Then…" Ren trailed off.
"Oh! He's probably gonna confess to all of his crimes! Makoto exclaimed.
"Yes, that must be it." Haru agreed. "I know that you told me that this is how it's supposed to go, but I was still nervous."
"I understand." Makoto nodded. "But we stopped the masked man from killing him in his palace, so everything should be alright."
"Thank goodness for that." Haru expressed. "Despite everything… I wouldn't want anything to happen to my father."
"That's another successful infiltration." Ren grinned. "We should think of a way to celebrate, like after the rest of our major targets."
"Oh, about that…" Haru trailed off. "Are all of you free tomorrow?
"We should be. Why?" Ren asked.
"I wanted to thank all of you for everything that you've done for me." Haru stated. "So I actually made plans for all of us to go to Tokyo Destinyland tomorrow!"
"R-Really?" Ren gasped. "You got tickets for all of us?!"
"Yes. Father even reserved the entire park for us. I told him that he didn't need to do that, but he insisted." Haru answered.
"T-T-The entire park?!" Makoto gasped.
She knew that Haru's family was rich, but that was insane!
"Y-Yes, for the whole day." Haru stammered. "Would you all be able to come?"
"Sure! Sounds great." Ren grinned.
"Sounds fun. Let's see if the others can come too." Makoto replied.
After quickly confirming that everyone could attend, she said goodbye to the others before heading home for the day.
10/11 Thursday
The entire group quickly made their way over to Tokyo Destinyland. It was still incredible to her that Haru had somehow managed to reserve the entire park for them.
Supposedly, it was originally going to be for a company party, but it had to be called off due to the scandal. At least it wouldn't go to waste.
Since they had gathered the entire group together, it was the perfect opportunity to let them know about everything that had happened recently.
"Thank you for coming, everyone." Makoto expressed. "I know that you're all eager to go on the rides, but we have some quick business to take care of first."
"What do ya mean?" Ryuji asked.
"There's something that I have to tell you." Makoto stated, as everyone gathered around. "It's… about the Metaverse."
That immediately caught the other's attention.
"Is it about my father?" Haru asked.
"No, it's about someone else… someone capable of entering the Metaverse." Makoto explained.
"You mean the masked man?" Ren asked.
"No, someone else." Makoto elaborated.
She explained the situation with Eiko to the rest of the team.
"FOR REAL?!" Ryuji gasped.
"So that girl I met that one day… she has a Persona as well." Yusuke nodded.
"This Tsukasa guy sounds like a real dick." Ann frowned. "I'm glad that the two of you managed to deal with him, although…"
"Sooo, um… will she be joining the team?" Futaba asked.
"I'm… not sure." Makoto admitted. "She told me that she would want to help us if she can, but there is a problem…"
"What kind of problem?" Ren asked.
"It's kinda like what happened to Haru." Morgana answered. "It seems that she hasn't fully awakened yet."
"I'm going to try and train her in the upper floors of Mementos and see if I might be able to help her with that." Makoto explained.
"I'll come with you, just in case!" Morgana replied.
"Thank you." Makoto nodded. "Actually, there was one more thing… it doesn't really have anything to do with the Metaverse, but…
She glanced over at Ren, who nodded at her.
"You see… Ren and I…" Makoto trailed off.
"You're dating, right?" Ann said, cutting her off.
"The two of us are… w-wait, how did you know?!" Makoto gasped.
"I mean… it was kinda obvious." Ann giggled. "With the way you two have been acting recently, it was easy to tell."
"R-Really?" Ren asked. "Did the rest of you guys know too?"
"It was rather obvious when I took the time to observe the two of you, and the glances that you gave each other." Yusuke noted.
"You didn't think that I noticed all those times that you'd leave me behind to sneak off somewhere with him?" Morgana pointed out.
"Um… I did see the two of you on the rooftop." Haru recalled.
"Oooooh, the rooftop. What were you two doing up there?" Ann teased.
"N-Nothing! Nothing at all!" Makoto insisted.
Futaba shrugged. "I mean, I have cameras set up at Leblanc, soooo…"
"You still have those up?!" Ren exclaimed.
"Ugh…" Makoto groaned. "I can't believe that everyone…"
"WAIT, FOR REAL?!" Ryuji gasped. "SINCE WHEN?!"
"… Almost everyone already knew." Makoto sighed. "I thought that we did a better job of keeping it discrete." Ren shrugged.
Makoto: W-Well, in any case, that was all I wanted to say. So feel free to enjoy yourselves!
Everyone dashed off, going to try out the various stalls and rides.
They had even all gone on a rollercoaster together.
After another successful infiltration, the team felt closer than ever…
FORTUNE CONFIDANT: RANK 7
Eventually, after the team had gotten their fill of all of the rides, they all sat down together to eat.
Some of the others were wearing funny little hats and accessories that they had gotten at the stalls.
"Makoto, look, look!" Futaba cried, holding out a Cerberus plushy. "Look what Ren won for me!"
"Oh, it's so cute." Makoto smiled. "Where did he win it from?"
"Apple bobbing!" Ren grinned. "I had to find the golden apple in order to win it."
She wasn't sure what Cerberus had to do with golden apples, but at least she was happy.
"How are you all enjoying your meal? I think it's delicious." Makoto smiled.
"Even the presentation of the meal was spectacular! The foot, like art on a canvas!" Yusuke declared.
"The staff brough all of this out this table and food just for us, huh?" Ann said.
"Pretty sweet view too!" Ryuji grinned, looking at the fireworks going on in the background.
"The VIP life is incredible!" Ann beamed. "Not that I'd expect anything less from a private rental!"
"It's still surprising to me that we're the only ones here." Makoto added.
"Hahaha! We're the rulers of the kingdom of dreams!" Futaba declared.
"They even brought out all these bright lights and fireworks." Ren mentioned.
"It's beautiful." Makoto expressed.
"Hehehe… is this the part where Ren says, 'Not as beautiful as you."?" Futaba giggled.
"W-What?!" Ren stammered.
"Ahahaha! They're blushing!" Ann giggled.
"T-That's enough!" Makoto exclaimed.
"Say, Ryuji, what's with those cartoon animal ears you're wearing?" Morgana asked.
"… Ann forced them on me." Ryuji sighed.
"Hehehe… I told him he'd look cute in them." Ann beamed. "I think the Destinyland charm is rubbing off on him!"
"I would have liked to see the parade too, but because the request was so sudden, they weren't able to get enough staff together." Haru said.
"That's alright. Maybe next time." Makoto suggested.
"Either way, this is the best celebration we've had yet!" Ryuji exclaimed.
"Careful, Haru. These guys might raise the bar even higher for their next celebration." Morgana joked.
"Isn't it a bit premature to already be talking about our next celebration?" Yusuke smiled. "We still haven't technically finished this mission yet."
"Oh, speaking of!" Ann exclaimed. "Isn't it almost time for the press conference?"
"Ooooh, perfect timin'!" Ryuji grinned.
Makoto laid out her phone on the table for everyone to see, showing them the live broadcast of Okumura's press conference.
Okumura stood in front of numerous microphones, several photographers taking pictures of him.
"Thank you all for taking time out of your busy schedules to gather here." Okumura greeted. "Today, I would like to elaborate on the truth of my company's labor situation."
Everyone gathered around Makoto's phone, wanting to hear the confession.
"How my employees were forced to work under severe conditions… how lax we were with sanitation and safety… and how I went to great lengths to cover up these scandals." Okumura continued.
"He's really confessing to everything…" Haru whispered.
"For all of this, I wholeheartedly apologize." Okumura expressed.
Okumura bowed his head, several cameras going off as he did so.
"So are you saying that this was all done under your orders?" a journalist asked.
"Yes…" Okumura admitted. "I am responsible…"
"We heard that several of your competitors had experienced scandals of their own, always close to your own scandals. Not only that, but there are rumors that employees that disagreed with your decisions were forced to resign due to a mysterious illness, just like your competitors." a journalist stated. "Did you have anything to do with these incidents?"
Okumura glanced to the side, a guilt-ridden look on his face.
"We'd like answers." The journalist said.
"About that… I have a critical piece of information to share today." Okumura muttered.
"He must have some information on the culprit behind the mental shutdown and psychotic breakdown incidents!" Makoto realized. "And now everyone will know!
"Those illnesses… were mental shutdowns and psychotic breakdowns that I ordered to be done." Okumura confessed. "And the ones responsible… the ones I contacted… must be-"
*BANG*
The sound of a gunshot rang out in the video, striking Okumura in the chest.
"Urk!"
Two more gunshots rang out, striking Okumura both times.
The crowd began to scream in terror, two security guards helping Okumura up as he started to collapse.
The camera panned over to two more security guards tackling a third one to the ground, knocking a gun out of their hand.
Staring at the gunman's face, Makoto noticed that they had a completely dead look in their eyes.
A sinister black ooze flowed out of the gunman's mouth…
It must be the work of a psychotic breakdown.
Cameras continued to flash on Okumura's body before the livestream suddenly cut off.
"F-Father!" Haru cried.
She tried to hide the footage, but Haru quickly snatched the phone from her, her hands trembling as she did so.
"What the hell?! Somebody shot him!" Ann screamed.
"The gunman's face…" Makoto trailed off.
"It's just like… what happened to Mom." Futaba whispered.
"What's going on?!" Haru cried.
"That security guard… they must have gone through a psychotic breakdown." Morgana realized.
"But how?! It's not like we ever targeted that guy!" Ryuji snapped.
"… The Masked Man." Ren realized.
"Of course!" Makoto realized. "They… must have known that that security guard would be here… and made sure to wait until this moment to strike!"
"They must have been trying to silence Okumura." Yusuke theorized.
"I-I'm sorry! I have to go home!" Haru cried, running off.
"H-Hey, Haru!" Ryuji called out.
"I'll talk to her later." Makoto promised. "For now, we should all head home.
"Yeah…" Ren agreed. "We can work out what to do later."
Their party cut short, everyone went home for the day, worried about what the future would bring…
"It's been a while, Sae-san." Akechi greeted. "What are you watching?"
Akechi let out a gasp, seeing the footage of Okumura's death.
"I assume you've heard the news." Sae asked, completely calm.
"I have. I'm not yet sure who could have done this, however." Akechi frowned.
"Right now… I believe that silenced and betrayed by his little lapdogs." Sae theorized.
"You mean… the Phantom Thieves?" Akechi asked.
"There could have been a falling out between them, so the Phantom Thieves disposed of him." Sae replied.
"Are there any other suspects?" Akechi asked.
"Not that I'm aware of." Sae stated. "Weren't you suspicious of them as well."
"Of course!" Akechi beamed. "I just wanted to make sure that we weren't overlooking something. But if there are no other suspects, then it's quite likely to be the Thieves."
"Tomorrow, we're searching the Okumura residence." Sae informed him. "We must find the evidence, no matter what!"
"Absolutely!" Akechi agreed.
"By the way…" Sae trailed off. "Did I lend you my laptop recently?
"Not that I can recall." Akechi stated. "Why?"
"My laptop shows signs that someone transferred some data from it." Sae mentioned.
"You suspect me?" Akechi asked, narrowing his eyes.
"I've just been asking everyone I work with." Sae said. "I can't imagine it being anyone else."
"As a detective, I honor the value of information. But… perhaps this could also be the work of the Phantom Thieves?"
"You believe that they could target me?" Sae asked.
"Well, if your theory is correct, and they eliminated Okumura because he was of no use to them, isn't it likely that they could target anyone who they consider a threat?" Akechi asked. "You have been aggressively gathering any information you can on them."
"Hmm… you might have a point." Sae admitted. "That's all the more reason for me to catch them. They're mine!"
"Be sure to watch your back. I'll always be there to help you if need be." Akechi promised. "Just… be sure not to stoop to their level."
"... I'll do whatever I have to do." Sae declared.
Akechi didn't reply, simply sighing before walking off.
How could this have happened?! How could she have been so careless?!
Makoto lied in bed, chastising herself for allowing this to happen.
She should have known that the masked man would try something like this.
"Don't blame yourself, Makoto." Morgana said, curling up next to her in bed. "There was no way we could have known that they would do something like this."
"But then how are we supposed to deal with them?!" Makoto argued. "How are we supposed to know when they'll strike next?!"
"We'll just have to figure that out tomorrow." Morgana stated. "For now, you need to get some sleep. It's been a long day."
Makoto sighed, knowing deep down that Morgana was right. She would need plenty of rest if she wanted to be at her best when making plans for what to do next.
She closed her eyes, eventually drifting off to sleep.
When she awoke, she found herself in the Velvet Room once again.
"On your feet, Mak- Inmate." Justine called. "Our master has an important matter to discuss with you."
She wasn't really in the mood for this at the moment, but she supposed it made sense that we wanted to speak to her now.
"First, I wish to congratulate you for expelling the one so tainted with greed…" Igor began.
"But… things didn't go the way they should have." Makoto frowned. "This wasn't what was supposed to happen."
"Indeed, something odd seems to have happened." Igor agreed.
"It must have been the work of that Masked Man, right?" Makoto asked.
"I cannot say for certain, but surely you sense the malicious will of another…" Igor trailed off. "It seems a contingency has occurred."
"Hmm… a malicious will… I felt something like that back at Okumura's palace." Makoto said. "Still… it'll be hard to know what they'll do next…"
"If these setbacks continue, your rehabilitation cannot be completed." Igor cautioned. "Although there is always a path forward. I look forward to seeing how you will proceed."
Makoto nodded. "The public has likely lost a bit of faith in us… but we'll find a way.
Igor chuckled. "The public can be truly fickle, can't they? That is why it is necessary for them to be led by a firm, guiding hand. Someone to make all of their decisions for them. Perhaps you could be that person."
That seemed… like a bit much.
"I'm… not sure if I'd go that far. Making all of their decisions… I don't know about that." Makoto admitted. "I just… want to help them."
Igor studied her for what seemed like forever, never saying anything, but never dropping his grin either.
"I see… perhaps that will change soon." Igor stated. "Regardless, as I said, I look forward to seeing what you'll do next."
She felt as if she was truly beginning to understand Igor…
HUNGER CONFIDANT: RANK 9
"... Hey, um… it's time to go. Back to your world." Caroline mumbled.
She noticed that the siblings seemed… more reserved then normal, eyes glancing towards the ground instead of at her or Igor.
Did something happen?
Their conversation over, Makoto climbed back into the bed in her cell, feeling herself slowly being dragged back into the real world…
She finished retelling the day in which they had witnessed Okumura's death. She had tried to stress that they had nothing to do with his death, but it seemed like her sister wasn't buying it.
"You truly expect me to believe that?" Sae scoffed. "Okumura was your target, and he ended up dead. Anyone would suspect you."
"But what would be our motive?" Makoto asked. "Why kill him when we could just change his heart like all of our other targets."
"We know that Okumura was involved in the psychotic breakdown and mental shutdown incidents." Sae brought up. "It's possible that he was working with the Phantom Thieves until you decided to silence him."
"That doesn't make any sense." Makoto frowned. "If we were working with Okumura, why would we inflict a change of heart in him and have him confess everything."
"Perhaps he had a change of heart naturally." Sae argued. "He felt guilty for his role and tried to expose you all."
"Then why would we bother trying to figure out who was on his security detail when we could just directly inflict a mental shutdown on him?" Makoto countered. "It wouldn't make any sense to involve any more people."
Sae seemed to consider her words, rubbing her temples.
"I assume…" Sae began. "That you're going to again claim that someone else is capable of entering the Metaverse, and that they're the one responsible for Okumura's death."
"It would make sense, wouldn't it?" Makoto asked. "Since we changed Okumura's heart, they wouldn't be able to inflict a mental shutdown or psychotic breakdown on him. So they were forced to find out about his security detail and get them to kill Okumura."
"And their reason for doing this?" Sae asked.
"As you said, Okumura was involved in the mental shutdown and psychotic breakdown incidents." Makoto replied. "So, the other people responsible had to silence him so that he wouldn't confess and expose them."
"Still…"
"They've pulled this before, haven't they?" Makoto asked. "When they murdered the principal after we changed his heart, they tried to blame his death on us, but it was discovered that they had simply framed us."
"So it's the same situation, is what you're saying?" Sae asked. "Would they pull the same trick twice?"
"I think they'd do anything to hide the fact that they were responsible for all the incidents." Makoto replied.
"I suppose… that it's possible." Sae admitted. "Determining your group as the ones who murdered Okumura might right now would be… premature."
She could feel her sister slowly beginning to trust her.

"That said… I still have a few more questions." Sae said. "First of all, was there anyone else who joined your group?"
"Well, there was one more person who joined us during an infiltration." Makoto stated. "But I wouldn't really call them a part of the team."
"So were they an unofficial member, like the last person you talked to me about?" Sae asked.
"No, I wouldn't even go that far." Makoto said. "This person…"
She wracked her brain, trying to think about how to say what she wanted to say.
"... Wasn't one of us." Makoto finished.
"I see. In that case, did they have some sort of connection to your final target?" Sae asked.
"... It's possible. Shall I explain what happened next?" Makoto wondered.
"Yes… I want you to talk about your final target." Sae answered. "I want you… to talk about why you targeted me."
