Chapter 2
Two Weeks Later.
Now that Issei had revealed his true origins, the sergeant was making plans to help each of the Gremory peerage members since he knew that while Kiba, Xenovia, and Gasper had grown much stronger, both the King and Queen, as well as the sole Rook of their team was much weaker than any of them.
The Ratings Game between the Gremory and Bael peerages was postponed to address the damage to the Underworld and the trial of Diadora for his betrayal and crimes against the Church/Angel Faction.
The Gremory peerage members were still getting used to the new Issei since his actions changed. Issei preferred to sleep with just one of the girls at night instead of all of them because he didn't wish to suffocate to death or deal with the girls fighting in bed all the time before tiring themselves out.
Issei and Asia grew closer since the two were not only engaged, but Issei seemed to grow closer to Akeno, Irina, and Rossweisse. In contrast, the others, Koneko, Rias, and Xenovia, seemed to feel like they weren't growing closer to him at all since Issei treated Koneko as a child and respected her as a fighter but refused to do any of the Senjutsu healing with her naked on him since Issei didn't want Koneko to settle on him but rather someone who could truly make her happy.
Xenovia and Rias did chat with Issei when they could, but Issei was busy with his schoolwork. He was given the exam to become a High-Class Devil due to his accomplishments against Diadora, but really, it was so they could see who Issei Hyoudou really was as the sergeant.
Ravel, on the other hand, seemed to be enjoying Issei's new persona and still helped him out, which led to the two almost acting like a married couple, like he was with Asia. Unbeknownst to the sergeant, Asia, and Ravel make a blood pact to protect Issei from those who would dare harm him and train together to become stronger when Issei becomes a High-Class Devil and gains his peerage.
Issei also helps Kiba finally get together with Tsubaki, which is due to Issei pushing Kiba on top of her while they kiss each other. This results in Issei being so proud of his friend that he can have his chance at happiness.
Gasper, on the other hand, was more emotionally attached to Issei since the little Daphmir was more interested in hanging out with Issei. The sergeant didn't mind since he respected Gasper's crossdressing. Double Trouble back in the squad was nonbinary, which resulted in Issei telling how Double Trouble was a bit of a flirt in the squad and how they enjoyed flirting with him the most since Double Trouble enjoyed his reactions.
This led to Gasper going all out with the cross-dressing and even trying out some cosplay on both sides, like Rachel Alucard, Princess Boo, Snake from GI Joe and even imitated Kuroka, which made Issei laugh so hard when Gasper acted like her, which was shocking to the group until it came the day that Issei was returning to class after the Ratings Game.
And this day will be shocking to all the students of Kuoh Academy.
Morning. 4 am.
Issei was jogging in the streets, which helped him wake up and relax while also getting his blood pumped for the day when he heard panting from behind him. He looked back to see Ravel and Asia struggling to keep up with his pace while Kiba seemed to be handling it with no problem.
"Come on! We're almost done. Just around that corner and we're at the finish line." Issei called out, his voice full of encouragement.
Behind him, Ravel and Asia were pushing themselves hard to keep up, their breathing ragged. Ravel's face was flushed from the exertion, while Asia's legs were clearly starting to give out. Kiba, on the other hand, was running alongside Issei with effortless ease, his face as calm as always, even though they had been running for miles.
"I'm… not sure how much further I can go, Issei…" Ravel muttered through gritted teeth, her determination matching her usual fiery personality, but it was clear that her stamina wasn't quite up to par with the others.
Asia was struggling even more, her pace slowing as she panted, "I-I'll catch up… just… need a second…"
Issei glanced back over his shoulder, seeing their fatigue. A small smirk tugged at his lips as he slowed his pace just enough for them to catch up without leaving them behind. The last thing he wanted was to push them too hard, but he was secretly impressed by how hard they were working to keep up with him. He knew it wasn't easy for them, especially given how intense their training had been lately.
"We're almost there, just a few more steps!" Issei cheered again, pushing himself to run ahead slightly but leaving enough space for his companions to follow. The corner of the street loomed ahead, and as they turned it, the familiar sight of Kuoh Academy's gates appeared in the distance.
Ravel managed a half-grin despite her exhaustion. "You're impossible," she muttered, but there was no anger in her voice, only admiration.
"I wouldn't have it any other way," Issei replied, giving her a wink.
As they finally reached the gates of the school, Issei came to a stop, stretching his arms out and catching his breath. "You two did great," he said, nodding at Asia and Ravel. "You're getting stronger, keep it up, and soon you'll be able to keep pace with Kiba here."
Kiba gave a small nod of acknowledgment, though it was clear he wasn't showing off. "Issei's right. It's all about pushing your limits. You'll get there."
Asia, who had managed to catch her breath, smiled warmly. "Thanks, Issei. We'll keep training."
They all stood for a moment, catching their breath as the early morning sun slowly rose over the horizon, casting a soft golden glow over the school grounds. The peaceful silence was broken only by the distant sounds of the city beginning to wake up, cars starting to drive by, and the soft rustle of leaves in the morning breeze.
Issei felt a pang of satisfaction. Things had changed, sure, but the bonds with his peerage members—his friends—had only grown stronger. Even if the path ahead seemed daunting, he knew he wouldn't face it alone.
"Alright, time to get ready for school," Issei said, breaking the silence. "We've got a big day ahead."
Ravel raised an eyebrow, her expression turning mischievous. "Are you sure you're ready to face the chaos of school, Issei? This'll be the first time you take off that persona people are so used to, so there's bound to be some people thinking it's just an act."
He grinned, though it didn't quite reach his eyes. "I can handle it. Don't worry about me."
Asia, ever the optimistic one, piped up. "Issei's right! He's much stronger now and not the same. If anyone can handle it, it's him!"
Issei chuckled, shaking his head. "We'll see about that."
As the group walked through the gates of Kuoh Academy, little did they know that today would be unlike any other. The students, unaware of what was coming, would soon see a new side of Issei Hyoudou—a side shaped by battle, leadership, and the weight of the decisions he'd made. Today, he wasn't just a regular student; he was a soon-to-be High-Class Devil, a sergeant with a past that would soon catch up to him.
Issei and his group headed to the clubroom to use the shower there and enjoyed the private time that Ravel had with Asia since the girls were glad that the baths were soundproofed.
"Okay, so we know that Issei's true feelings are coming out since he did turn down Koneko and said she'd be happier with someone else," Ravel said as she was glad that the stupid cat was out of the running while Asia nodded in response.
"Indeed, plus I can tell that Issei is planning on letting down Rias and Xenovia since Issei doesn't seem to be as interested as he was before, which makes me wonder about his true feelings for Rias and Xenovia since I can imagine him turning down Xenovia due to her advances in wanting his baby while Rias is not exactly on his mind for romance, well maybe respect as a King but I think that's it," Asia explained which Ravel agreed with since if Rias were to hear when the nobles spoke of the Gremory Peerage they talk about Issei since they all notice how he is the pillar of strength for said group.
Sure, the other members of the said peerage are respected, but Issei is shown more since he has revealed not only his true past but also how he truly was the one who lifted his teams' spirits high when they struggled or were low on confidence.
"Yeah. But I do think our biggest threat will no doubt be Akeno and Gasper since I can tell that both of them have been spending more time with each other, which makes me glad that Issei will have those who respect him follow him. Still, I do wonder if Issei will become a High Class before or after the Bael peerage since many people are looking forward to seeing Issei fight Saiorag." Ravel said that since she knew of Issei's fanbase, she was excited to see their idol face Saiorag Bael.
"I've heard, but I do think Gasper, now that they've fully embraced their true selves, while Akeno seems to truly lobe Issei as he is, even Irina. I do feel bad for Xenovia, but this may be good for her since I was thinking of her, and Kiba would be a nice pair since I know he's dating Tsubaki, but Kiba and Xenovia would be a great pair as well.
"Yeah, if that Yandere Queen will let Kiba be near another woman since she's still a bit possessive due to his fan club," Ravel said as she recalled Tsubaki having to keep Kiba safe from his creepy fan club, especially the Manga Club that ships Kiba and Issei, much to the guys' displeasure.
"Agreed, but it's still nice to train with Issei since it helps me get a bit faster and stronger. I can tell that it's been helping me with my healing magic from Twilight Healing." Asia said that she used her Sacred Gear to heal the bruises on her feet, which Ravel had no issues with since her regeneration was able to take care of.
The two girls then continued to enjoy their bath while Issei and Kiba were chatting with each other on their side of the bath.
"So, how are things with you and Tsubaki? Any problems in your relationship?" Issei asked while washing his back before Kiba replied.
"Well, we've only been dating for two weeks, and she's already cautious of my fan club."
"It's understandable given how crazy they are, and they say I'm a pervert," Issei said, which made the guys chuckle before Kiba asked.
"Hey, Issei. You and Gasper...is there..."
"Well, to be fair, I'll admit that they're cute, but I already had to deal with one Double Trouble, and now I'm dealing with a second one since Gasper has been wearing fake breasts."
"Really?"
"Yeah. It makes sense since they've been wanting to try out wearing more adult-sized dresses and such since it makes them feel fabulous, and the fact Gasper thinks they can pull it off better than Rias and Akeno."
"Is that why they've been training to learn how to use their Darkness to become an adult at times?"
"Uhhuh."
"Well, cheers to Gasper. By the way, I heard you rejected Koneko. Is she doing better?"
"Asia says she is, but I can see that Koneko still wants to try and get close to me, as well as both Xenovia and Rias too, since honestly, I was thinking you and either of them would be a great pair since you and the girls could help each other, plus I do think that Tsubaki wouldn't be so protective of you against Rias or Xenovia," Issei said since he thought Xenovia's bluntness and her forward attitude would help Kiba open up more or Rias would be a good choice since they've known each other for a while now.
Kiba pondered this since he would admit that he enjoyed Rias's company. Kiba was grateful that his King had saved his life but didn't want to pursue a relationship with her since he was her Knight and servant.
Plus, Kiba saw Rias as more of a sister since he wouldn't admit it. Still, he's always wanted his own Knights of the Round Table as part of his peerage since he's always thought of having honorable comrades in arms and the fact he's always liked women who could hold their own and kick his ass.
"Well, I'll think about Xenovia since I was kind of hoping to trade with Riser Phoenix since I actually would like one of his Knights and a Pawn of his to join my future peerage, or they're up for it." Kiba said with Issei congratulating him.
"Sweet! I was honestly thinking the same, too, since Isabela and Xuelan actually asked me if I would be willing to trade with Riser for them should I become a High-Class Devil." Issei said as he recalled speaking to the Rooks of Riser's group since Isabella was amazed by Issei's military training and wanted to spar with him. At the same time, Xuelan was actually amazed and envious of Issei being so strong since she thought that Issei could help her become the strongest and even help Xuelan with her training in using Chi.
The two guys finished showering and got dressed for the day while back at the Hyoudou residence. One member was feeling depressed since they felt so incomplete.
And that person was none other than Xenovia Quatra.
Xenovia was in the training arena and saw that no one else was around before summoning Ex-Durandal. Still, instead of easily lifting the sword like she always did, the sword felt really heavy as it fell to the ground, its chains wrapped around its blade and handle.
"I don't blame you for rejecting me since these past two weeks have proven that I'm far from worthy," Xenovia said as she looked at the sword that rejected her and recalled how the sword was so powerful, yet she, out of many other candidates, was able to wield its power.
However, after Issei came out about who he was in the past, the sword began to reject her after seeing her soul and training waver before it allowed her to use its power one last time in the battle of Diadora Battle. Afterward, the sword remained in its seal, not allowing Xenovia to use its power after the battle, which really hurt the warrior's pride as she knew that the sword wasn't just a hunk of metal but a blade that chose if its wielder was worthy of using its power.
"I'm supposed to be a Knight, a fucking Knight. And even then, I didn't have the speed to get to Issei to help him against his battle against that damned Descendant of Beelzebub." Xenovia then turned to her mirror and looked at Asia in her thoughts before she gritted her teeth.
"Asia is much faster than me, even though she isn't a Knight. She is a Bishop, one who is known for healing others. If Asia had been honed for battle like me, she could've easily saved Issei before I could even attempt to do so." Xenovia said as she closed her eyes and imagined their roles swapped, with Asia as a warrior more competent than her in battle, fighting alongside Issei.
At the same time, she was a healer and supported in the rear while watching them from behind, which made Xenovia think of an interesting idea.
"Maybe. Maybe if Asia and I had exchanged roles, then maybe our relationship with Issei would've been stronger, and I could've helped him better before he revealed his true self, and maybe I could've been there for him instead of goading him just for a child. What kind of person am I to be so selfish?" Xenovia said as she looked back at her sword before pondering about Asia using the sword better than she could since, after all, Xenovia was an Amazon woman who was a fool thinking she, herself, deserved to be with Issei after what she did to him and didn't even realize his feelings before it was too late.
"I'm a fool," Xenovia said as she pulled Durandal back into its sealed space before the Knight left the arena on a mission to find Asia Argento in hopes of giving someone worthy of the sword who would truly make better use of the greatsword than a brute like her.
At Kuoh Academy.
Aika Kiryuu was surprised to see that Issei seemed more mature and confident, which made her smile. She thought Issei was finally going to take down that persona he had been wearing all this time.
"Heh. So you finally stopped pretending to be that guy. It's nice to see you finally take off that mask." Aika whispered to herself as Issei chatted with his friends until class began. Issei shocked his classmates by performing differently in class and in PE. Not only did Issei answer every question he was asked when called upon by his teacher, but he even outperformed the best athletes in their class, which shocked them until Katase cornered him just as the lunch bell rang.
"Okay, Hyoudou. Confess! How the hell did you do that? Are you on drugs or something that made you smarter or something since you were barely able to scrape by in classes and PE, but now you're suddenly answering questions like they're nothing and even besting Matsuda in the run? Explain! Now!" Katase yelled as she slammed her hands on his desk, but Issei didn't seem fazed. Issei sighed as if tired of her.
"Look pinky," Issei said, shocking the group and insulting them since usually he just keeled over. But this time, the air around him seemed different, as if Katase was being intimidated by someone stronger than her.
"It doesn't matter whether you believe me or not, but let me just say that the Issei Hyoudou you think you know for almost two years was not the real me. However, I doubt your stubborn pride will allow you to think so, but do continue with the theories since it amuses me to see how your pervy mind works." Issei said as he grabbed his lunch and smiled as he walked out with Asia, Xenvoia, Irina, and Kiba, much to the shock of the class, while Aika seemed amused by the whole scenario.
"Heh. It's good to see your real self, Issei." Aika said as she smiled while catching his gaze. She saw a faint smile, which made her feel giddy since that smile was real compared to the one he plastered on his face last year.
For you see, Aika Kiryuu knew of Issei's real self, which some may ask how that's even possible. It's a long story, but if one wants to know how they met, then let's rewind time to last year when Issei was a first-year at Kuoh Academy.
One Year Ago.
Aika Kiryuu knew that being involved with people from the higher class would be the death of her since Aika was born into the higher class. Still, she hated how those with power and money looked down on those beneath them, which is why Aika vowed never to be spoiled rotten; they couldn't do anything on their own. However, she is unable to do anything because Aika is captured by some people who decide to hold her for ransom to get some money from her father.
'Dammit! If they didn't pat me down, then I could've cut my hands free with my survival knife.' Aika scolded in her mind as she tried to loosen them a bit until she heard some of the guards speak.
One of the guards chuckled, his voice gruff and arrogant. " The Boss said the ransom should be coming through soon. The rich girl's daddy will pay up, no problem."
Another guard scoffed. "Hmph. If it were up to me, we'd sell her off. Probably get more money that way."
Then, a third one replied. "Well, not after having some fun since the brat is the age of consent."
"Dude?"
"What?! She's got some sweet honkers on her, plus she probably likes it rough—most rich brats do," the third guy said as the trio chatted, much to her annoyance.
Aika grits her teeth, doing her best to stay composed. She had been in tough situations before—not like this, but she had been trained in self-defense, and she wasn't going to roll over. She was about to try another method of loosening her restraints when something unexpected happened.
A loud thud echoed through the warehouse.
This sound made the guards pause as they used the radio to contact their team.
"Hey, Charlie! What's going on?"
No response.
Then another.
"Hey! What's going on out there? Answer me! Richard? Alex? Sam?" the guy asked, panicked until the trio heard some shooting on the radio, followed by a loud SQUISH.
And another.
And another.
Aika tensed as she heard one of the guards call out. "Oi! Who's there?!"
Silence.
Then, there was a low whirring noise as the radio was turned on the other side, and the intruder spoke to them.
{So this is where you're hiding? An abandoned warehouse is cliché but has its perks.}
"Who the fuck are you? Those guys were former CIA!"
{Your friends' corpses are feeding the crows right now.}
"You expect me to believe one guy took down a group of ten specially trained soldiers?"
{The truth is often hard to believe, especially by the foolish.}
"What was that?"
{Which is why I am giving you and your friends next to you a choice. Surrender and return Aika Kiryuu to her family, or else I will kill you.}
"...You think you scare me? Bring it on!" The guy said as he smashed the radio, which made Aika swallow her spit.
"That was stupid," Aika muttered as the guy quickly reloaded his weapon, his hands slightly trembling despite his bravado. The other guards, however, were less confident.
"W-We should call for backup—"
"Shut up," the first one snapped, aiming his gun at the entrance. "Whoever this bastard is, he's dead the moment he walks through that door."
Aika, still bound, analyzed the situation. Someone had come for her—someone skilled enough to take down trained operatives. But was this person here to save her, or did they have their agenda?
Then, the lights flickered.
The second guard cursed under his breath, gripping his weapon tighter. "The hell's wrong with the power?"
A low, distorted chuckle echoed from the darkness.
"I gave you a choice. You chose wrong."
Before either guard could react, the metal door to the warehouse groaned, and then—
BANG!
"Open fire!" The first guy said as the door was blasted clean off its hinges. The force sent both men stumbling backward, their guns slipping from their hands. A figure stepped through the smoke and dim light, their silhouette shifting—inhuman.
Aika's breath caught in her throat.
"What the fuck—?!" The first guard scrambled to grab his weapon, but he wasn't fast enough.
In a blur of movement, the intruder closed the distance. A sickening crunch filled the air as the first guard's head twisted at an unnatural angle—his body crumpled to the floor like a broken doll.
The second guard let out a strangled cry, trying to run, but the intruder grabbed him by the throat and lifted him effortlessly.
"I warned you," the voice rasped. Up close, Aika could finally make out some details. Glowing red eyes. Unnatural, armored skin. A monstrous aura that sent a shiver down her spine.
The guard choked, his legs kicking in the air. "P-Please—!"
The figure tightened their grip. CRACK.
The second to last guard slumped lifelessly to the ground until the third guard got his gun and aimed it at her.
"Hold it right there, you freak!" The guy said while shaking his gun before the intruder turned towards him until they turned to Aika. Aika stared, her heart pounding. The figure turned to her, eyes locking onto hers.
"You're safe now, Aika Kiryuu."
She swallowed hard. "Who… Who the hell are you?"
The figure stepped closer, the dim light finally revealing their form.
And her blood ran cold.
"Die, you freak!" The guard said but barely got a shot off before his gun was smacked away, followed by a precise punch to his stomach that knocked him out cold until the figure stomped on their head so hard they exploded like a watermelon.
Aika stared, stunned, as the figure turned toward her.
Short, messy brown hair. Deep, intelligent eyes that seemed to analyze everything in an instant. A gauntlet on his wrist that was dimming as the glow faded.
"…Hyoudou?" Aika whispered, her voice filled with disbelief.
Issei Hyoudou stood before her, looking much different than the perverted idiot everyone knew him as at school. His stance was steady, his eyes sharp, and his body language spoke of someone far more dangerous than the rumors painted him to be.
"You alright?" he asked, his voice steady as he crouched down to untie her restraints.
Aika blinked before regaining her composure. "Y-Yeah, I—wait, how the hell did you find me?"
Issei smirked slightly. "Let's just say I have my ways."
Once her hands were free, Aika rubbed her wrists, still processing everything. "…So, what now? Are you gonna tell me this is all some weird misunderstanding? That you're actually a secret badass instead of some hopeless perv?"
Issei's smirk didn't fade. "That depends. You gonna tell anyone?"
Aika narrowed her eyes, analyzing him. "That depends. You gonna tell me what the hell is really going on with you?"
The two stared at each other for a moment before Issei let out a small chuckle. "You really are something else, Kiryuu."
Aika huffed. "Damn right, I am."
With that, the two slipped out of the warehouse together, leaving behind the unconscious criminals.
And from that moment on, Aika Kiryuu knew one thing for certain:
Issei Hyoudou was not who he pretended to be.
That night, she learned who he was, which began Aika's crush since she wanted to ask him out. Sadly, Issei kept his distance since he was dealing with a lot of emotional baggage, so Aika continued to help him and just be his friend, hoping that if he ever were to take off the mask, then maybe she could finally reveal her feelings towards him.
End Flashback.
Aika smiled as she headed over to Issei and kissed his cheek, which made Issei blush as he looked down at her. This made Aika smile, knowing that she could still get Issei to blush at simple things like this.
"I'm glad you're done pretending to be that guy, Issei. I wanted to tell you last year, but I love you ever since you not only saved me but also as I got to know you." Aika said, much to Issei's shock, as he then replied.
"To be honest, I wanted to reply that I felt the same, but-"
"You didn't want to burden me with that. I get it, and I knew I could really be your emotional support, but a part of me thought that if I was able to wait for you to reveal who you truly were, then maybe I could finally reveal my true feelings." Aika explained as she sat next to them and looked at Asia, Irina, Kiba, and Xenovia before asking them a question that shocked them.
"So...Are you guys going to confess that you're part of the supernatural world?" Aika asked, making the four, except Issei, choke on their food until Issei revealed the answer to their question.
"Aika's father is aware of the supernatural world and knows of the Reapers, so he hired me to save Aika when she was kidnapped last year. We've been friends since then," Issei said, which shocked the four of them until they turned to Aika, who smiled as she snickered at their reactions.
"Don't worry about it. I'm no snitch." Aika said as she looked at Xenovia, who seemed a bit wary and as if she had something to confess. "Though it looks like Xenovia is about to say something."
Xenovia sighed as she put her food down and summoned ExDurandal before giving it to Asia. Asia was shocked by this gesture until Asia picked it up and swung it a few times, much to Irina, Kiba, and Aika's shock. However, Issei's face seemed passive while looking at Xenovia.
"Durandal has rejected you, hasn't it?" Issei asked her, to which Xenovia replied with a nod, shocking the group.
Xenovia sighed, her grip tightening on the table before she finally spoke. "Yes. ExDurandal… has rejected me."
The words hung in the air, heavier than anyone expected. Irina's eyes widened, Kiba's expression turned serious, and Asia looked down at the holy sword in her hands, feeling the weight of what Xenovia had just admitted.
Aika's eyebrows raised slightly. "Damn. That's not something you hear every day."
Issei, however, remained composed. He had seen this coming.
"You're leaving, aren't you?" Issei asked.
Xenovia nodded. "For the next three months, at least. I'm going back home—to the Church, to Grigori, wherever I need to go—to figure things out." She exhaled deeply before continuing. "For as long as I can remember, I've been a weapon for God's will. A blade meant to cut down evil. But now… I don't know who I am outside of that. The way I've lived, the way I've thought—it feels hollow."
She clenched her fists, frustration clear on her face. "I fought in this war and killed with no hesitation or resistance when I was an exorcist. I fought for my faction, for my beliefs, but I never really stopped to think about why. And now that I've pondered my personal feelings after this last battle, I—" Xenovia hesitated, then shook her head. "No, I don't want to be lost anymore. I need to find my path, and if I stay here, I think I'll keep pretending I already have."
There was a heavy silence after that. Irina looked torn, unsure of what to say. Kiba seemed deep in thought. Asia frowned, clutching Ex-Durandal tightly.
Aika, meanwhile, just whistled. "Damn. Self-discovery arc? Respect."
Issei chuckled at her reaction before turning back to Xenovia. "I get it," he said. "After the war, I felt the same. Like I had no purpose outside of fighting, outside of being a weapon, a tool for those who needed someone killed. It wasn't until I met Asia who helped me start living instead of just existing."
Xenovia nodded, a small, grateful smile forming. "Then you understand why I have to go."
Issei reached out, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "Yeah. And I support your choice. You'll figure it out. You're too stubborn to give up."
Xenovia's expression softened before she suddenly pulled him into a hug. It was brief but firm, filled with unspoken gratitude. When she pulled away, she smirked slightly. "Just don't get too strong while I'm gone. I don't want to be completely outclassed when I come back."
Issei smirked. "No promises."
As she sat back down, Xenovia hesitated for a moment before glancing at Asia, then back at Issei. "Before I go, though… There's something I want."
The others looked at her curiously.
"A kiss," Xenovia said bluntly.
Asia blushed but, after a moment of thought, nodded in approval. "I-Issei… if you don't mind, I think it would be okay."
Issei blinked, processing that, before exhaling. "You sure?"
Xenovia crossed her arms. "Don't make me repeat myself."
Aika snickered. "Damn, girl, just go for it."
Issei sighed, then smirked. "Alright, alright."
And with that, he leaned in, pressing a soft but sincere kiss to Xenovia's lips. It lasted only a few seconds, but when they pulled apart, Xenovia's usual confidence had a hint of pink dusting her cheeks as she placed her head on his chest with a small smile on her face.
She smirked. "Now I have one more reason to come back."
Issei chuckled. "I'll be waiting."
With that, the mood in the room shifted. It wasn't a goodbye. It was just until next time.
Meanwhile, with Rias.
Rias sighed as she read that the next three months would be given to them for their training since the trial would occur after the first month. The second month would be for quelling the flames of rebellion and then repairing the arena for the Ratings Game.
"At least some of my peerage members will stay with me after Issei becomes a High-Ranked Devil," Rias said after she looked at the transfer papers from Asia, Xenovia, and Gasper.
Rias understood Asia since they've grown closer over time. Asia had always been more attached to Issei than anyone else in the peerage, so it was only natural that she would want to stay by his side.
Xenovia's decision also made sense. She had been questioning her place for a while now, and transferring to Issei's peerage as a Knight gave her a fresh start. Rias respected that, even if she didn't like losing such a strong fighter.
But Gasper…
She looked at his transfer request, frowning slightly. Unlike the others, Gasper had been hesitant. She could tell this wasn't an easy choice for him.
"I suppose I should have expected this," she muttered. "Gasper has always looked up to Issei. And with him becoming a High-Ranked Devil, it makes sense that he'd want to grow under his guidance."
Still, it was bittersweet. Rias wasn't losing them as friends, but as King and Queen, the bond they shared would be different.
A knock on the door pulled her from her thoughts.
"Come in," Rias called.
Akeno stepped in, her usual serene smile in place. "You're still thinking about the transfers, aren't you?"
Rias sighed. "How could I not? It feels like my peerage is falling apart."
Akeno chuckled. "It's not falling apart, Rias. It's just changing. We always knew Issei would become a High-Ranked Devil someday. It was only a matter of time before things shifted."
"I know that," Rias admitted, rubbing her temples. "It's just… I never thought it would happen so soon. I thought we'd have more time together as a peerage."
Akeno's expression softened as she walked closer. "You're afraid, aren't you?"
Rias looked up, surprised. "Afraid?"
Akeno nodded. "That things are changing too fast. That Issei is moving forward, and you might get left behind."
Rias stiffened. "That's—"
"—exactly what's on your mind," Akeno finished. "You've always seen Issei as your [Pawn, as someone who would be by your side, but now he's stepping out of your shadow. He's no longer just your Issei."
Rias clenched her hands into fists. "I know that! I know I can't keep him to myself. But… I just—" She hesitated, struggling to find the words.
Akeno smiled knowingly. "You love him."
Rias flinched.
Akeno giggled softly. "You've loved him for a long time, but you've always hesitated. And now that he's growing beyond your expectations, you're afraid of losing your chance."
Rias looked away. "I don't want to hold him back."
"Then don't, " Akeno said, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. But don't run away from your feelings either. If you love him, then fight for him."
Rias took a deep breath, then exhaled slowly. "You're right. I can't afford to hesitate any longer."
Akeno's smile widened. "Good. Because knowing Issei, he won't wait forever."
Rias stared down at the transfer papers one last time, then set them aside. She had spent too long overthinking. It was time to act.
However, a magic circle appeared in the room, shocking the duo until a being emerged from the said circle. The being appeared to be a handsome man with long blonde hair and bronze eyes. He looked to be very young, rivaling Sirzechs in looks. He had a thick goatee that covered his hardened face. He also wore a red and white robe with a few accents of gold to highlight it.
"Greetings, Rias Gremory." The man said as Rias's eyes widened in shock before bowing to the man in front of her.
"L-Lord Zeus! It's an honor to have the Ruler of Olympus in my home. W-What do you need of me?" Rias asked, her head bowed, not to show disrespect to the most powerful and oldest God of Olympus.
"Ahahah! Steady your heart, child, for I am here because I require Issei's services."
"Issei? What do you need him for?" Rias asked, concerned, before Zeus replied.
"It's due to my brother Sinxe. I believe he is assisting the Khaos Brigade in reviving one of the ancient Evil Dragons, though Loki, son of Odin, is also there. Unfortunately, we are unaware of where the ritual would be, so I am here to ask for Issei's assistance in dealing with this as soon as possible. Plus, it gives him an excuse to reunite with an old friend of his." Zeus said, but the last part he whispered to Rias surprised her until she got back to the matter at hand.
"Well, Issei is having lunch right now, though I'm sure he would be willing to help."
"Excellent! Ares, Aphrodite, Athena, Apollo, and Artemis, will be pleased to see two of the Reapers again," Zeus said as he vanished, shocking Rias and Akeno until her queen looked back at Rias and asked.
"Do you think Issei knew of the Greeks before us?"
"If Zeus was being honest, then possibly, but Issei never mentioned the Gods of other factions in the war. Why?" Rias asked, unaware of Issei's greeting to Zeus."
"OOF!" Zeus shouted as he was punched into the railing on the rooftop.
"You've got a lot of balls showing up here after what your children did in the war and dishonored my friends," Issei said while the Boosted Gear appeared and began to boost his power.
Zeus groaned as he picked himself up from the railing, cracked his neck, and dusted off his robes. Instead of looking angry, he actually chuckled.
"Hahaha! That's the greeting I expected from the Reaper of War!" Zeus grinned, rolling his shoulders. "I was wondering if you'd still hold a grudge."
Issei's eyes narrowed. "Damn right, I do. I lost too many good people because of the selfishness of your pantheon's sick desire to mess with us humans." His aura flared dangerously, the Boosted Gear pulsing with energy. "And now you show up, acting like we're old friends?"
Zeus sighed, rubbing his temples. "I won't deny the past, nor will I try to justify what happened. But I didn't come here to argue—I came because we have a serious problem."
Issei didn't drop his stance. "Oh, so now that you need something from me, suddenly we're cool?"
The King of Olympus smirked. "Let's be honest, Issei. You were never the type to turn down a fight against world-ending threats."
Issei clicked his tongue but said nothing. He hated that Zeus had a point.
Seeing that Issei wasn't immediately trying to punch him again, Zeus continued, his tone turning serious.
"My dear brother, Hades, is making moves behind the scenes. I have strong reasons to believe he's aiding Khaos Brigade in reviving an ancient Evil Dragon—one that not even I would want roaming free."
Issei frowned. "Which dragon?"
Zeus's face darkened. "Apophis."
That got Issei's full attention. His grip on the Boosted Gear tightened. "You're telling me that serpent is about to come back?"
Zeus nodded grimly. "And that's not all. Loki, the son of Odin, is also involved. We don't know the exact location of the ritual, but we need to act fast. That's why I came to you."
Issei exhaled sharply, the rage in his eyes shifting to focused determination. "Alright. Say I do help—what's in it for me?"
Zeus smirked. "Aside from preventing the end of the world? You'll also get the chance to reunite with an old friend of yours."
Issei's eyes narrowed. "Old friend?"
Before Zeus could elaborate, the rooftop door burst open.
"I knew I heard fighting up here!" Rias stormed onto the rooftop, Akeno following close behind.
Akeno sighed. "Issei, why am I not surprised that you punched the King of Olympus?"
"Because he deserved it?" Issei said bluntly.
Rias pinched the bridge of her nose before turning to Zeus. "My apologies, Lord Zeus—"
Zeus waved her off. "No need, young lady. This is just how us warriors greet each other." He grinned before turning back to Issei. "So, what do you say, Reaper? Up for a reunion with the Gods of Olympus?"
Issei exhaled, deactivating the Boosted Gear. "Fine. But if this turns out to be some bullshit scheme, I'm coming back to punch you again."
Zeus laughed heartily, not phased by it at all, as if he was expecting this. "Fair enough! Then, let's get going. Ares, Aphrodite, Athena, Apollo, and Artemis will be thrilled to see you again."
Issei rolled his eyes. "Great. Just what I needed. A family reunion with the most dysfunctional pantheon in history. And the most prideful and stupid Gods of the Pantheon. Excluding Apollo and Aphrodite, that is."
Rias and Akeno exchanged surprised glances.
Just how much was Issei hiding from them?
Scene!
And now, it's time for the real fun to begin. A bit more history into the war will come out with Issei reuniting with his friend and the Greek Gods, though Issei doesn't have a high opinion of them since the war exposed many of the Gods' ugly sides when they interfered or made things worse, which also resulted in some of his comrades dying.
As for Xenovia, I'm having her follow the path to becoming a true Knight, not like Artoria from Fate but one who knows what she's fighting for. This is like how Kiba is becoming his own Kingg since I thought he would like his peerage to resemble the knights of the Round Table.
And so, Kiba and Issei will become rivals and clash with each other as Issei tears down his old facade and enjoys fighting with his brother in all but blood.
