Selena looked at her PADD again to check the date. She took a breath and glanced out the window and saw the backyard she would play in as a child. She swore. She couldn't be pregnant. She knew how babies were made. Her mother told her when she was twelve. She was also a doctor and knew how many ways to find out if she was pregnant.
Selena never thought of herself as a mother. She was a doctor, and she was happy with that. She and Stephen never talked about children, and they have been dating for two years. She could check and may not have to tell him about this. If she wasn't pregnant, he would never know. If she was, she still had two weeks to think about how to tell him about the baby. Selena had a feeling that if she was pregnant, she would keep the baby. Selena knew what to do to check to see if she was.
Selena left her old room and went downstairs. She didn't see her parents around. She wondered if her mom was working, and she hoped that her dad wasn't downstairs in his office, or he would ask her why she needed the holodeck. She made her way downstairs to the basement; she saw that her dad wasn't there. She had wondered where he was if he wasn't here. She made her way to the holodeck and put in a program.
The program was an old medical program that she used when she was studying for her medical degree. She picked up the tricorder and did a scan on herself. She knew that she should have another doctor to confirm it, but she didn't want the world to know just yet. She looked at the tricorder and gave a sigh of relief. She wasn't pregnant. She felt relieved but she felt a little sorry about not being pregnant. She felt that she and Stephen would have made cute babies. Selena had a feeling that Stephen would be happy about the baby.
Selena left the holodeck and made her way back upstairs. "Mom," She found her mom in the kitchen getting a cup of something from the replicator. "What are you doing home?"
B'Elanna raised an eyebrow before taking a sip of her tea. "That last time I checked I live here unlike you, who is visiting."
Selena smiled and took a seat on the stool at the island. "Sorry, I didn't think that you were home."
"I just came home," B'Elanna was trying to figure out her youngest daughter but thought it best to leave it alone. Her daughter was a grown woman and could deal with what was on her mind without her mother's help. "I'll be in my office if you need me," B'Elanna started for her office.
"Mom, have you ever had a pregnancy scare?" Selena wanted to talk to someone about this. She couldn't talk to her sister because she was on Q'onoS with her family. All her friends were not in town.
B'Elanna stopped and turned towards her daughter. "Yes, several," B'Elanna made her way back to the kitchen and took a seat on another stool. "Why?"
"I think that I just had my first," Selena tried to smile.
"Your first? You never had before." B'Elanna was a little shocked. B'Elanna had to think about where her daughter was in life. She knew that she was dating Stephen, so it wasn't a big surprise.
Selena shook her head. "You remember that I really didn't get into dating until I was in college."
B'Elanna thought about it and knew it was true. She didn't care for most of the boys that Selena brought home. It had never lasted long for her. B'Elanna could believe that this was Selena first pregnancy scare. "Please tell me that you didn't come here to avoid Stephen because you thought that you were pregnant?"
Selena smiled. "No, Stephen had too many things going on the ship that he couldn't make it. I know how much you love him. I think you like him better than your own son." B'Elanna rolled her eyes. Selena laughed because she knew her brother. She took a breath. "When was your first pregnancy scare?" She asked. She didn't want to talk about her brother.
"Right after I left the academy," B'Elanna said. "I was glad that I wasn't because I didn't want to tell my old boyfriend at the time, and I didn't think that I was ready to have a baby."
Selena knew that her mother left the academy after her second year. "You were scared," B'Elanna nodded. "Did you have scares with Dad?"
B'Elanna nodded. "Yes several."
"Several?" Selena thought that her parents were careful when they were dating. B'Elanna nodded. "Wow, you and Dad used protection," B'Elanna smiled.
"Yes, your dad and I were very careful before we married and even after we were married."
"You had a scare after you were married," Selena knew her parents had active sex life. It was something you didn't want to know but between her and her siblings they had caught their parents in comprising positions.
"Yeah," B'Elanna laughed. "Not that we wouldn't have loved another child, but we had a lot on our plates." Selena nodded. She understood that.
"Did you have so many with Dad that you can't remember your first?" Selena smiled.
B'Elanna narrowed her eyes at Selena. "The first time was right after we got together. I was scared because I didn't know how your father was going to react to being a father."
"Did you talk to Dad about having children?" Selena asked.
"Yes," B'Elanna thought back to when Hirogens took over their ship and had them play different holoprograms. She played in the World War II one as a pregnant woman. Tom was shocked when he saw her. After they got the ship back, Tom and she had a talk about children. They both wanted a family and were okay if they had children when the time was right. "Have you talked to Stephen about children? I remember that after I talked to your dad, I knew that I could talk to him about it."
"No, we only been dating…"
"Almost four years," B'Elanna finished for her. Selena shrugged her shoulders. "You may want to talk to him about that."
"Maybe," Selena mumbled. "I think that he would be okay if I was."
B'Elanna took a breath. "Selena, you are in a serous relationship, and this is probably a conversation that you should have earlier."
"Probably," Selena took a sigh. She liked what she had with Stephen. She knew either one of them was going to leave any time soon. She liked having him to herself. They never talked about where their relationship was going. Selena glanced at her mother and knew that her parents were wondering when they were getting married. How did a conversation go from talking about pregnancy scare to what was going on in her relationship with Stephen.
"I think that you got some thinking to do," B'Elanna got up and kissed Selena on the forehead.
Selena frowned. She didn't like her mother was right. Selena watched her mother make her way to her office.
