Chapter 111: The Case of Ayumi's Illustrated Diary 2

Sometime later...

"It started when we were on our way home from a drive." Ayumi began.

Flashback

"Conan-kun." Ayumi shook the dozing Conan awake, the others spotting a flashing light inside a darkened building, a crowd had already started to gather around the deserted building. "What's that?"

"Could it be..." Fumio frowned, the kids left Professor Agasa's Beetle. "Morse Code?"

"Not only that, but they're signaling SOS." Conan noted. "Good job spotting that, Fumio."

"Is someone being held captive up there?" Genta wondered.

"Fumio and I going to go check things out." Conan had Fumio tug along with him. "You guys wait here." seeing the deathpan expressions on the other three's faces, he sighed and allowed them to follow. "Don't let your guard down." he warned, the group having arrived at the door.

Genta opened the door and the kids spread out to hide behind some furniture.

Professor Agasa then opened the door to the room where the light flickers was and saw a tied-up Danno Masaru lying face-down on the couch, his bundled-up legs were attached to the pull cord of the lamp.

"Are you alright?" Professor Agasa hurried in and removed the duct tape on Danno's mouth.

"There's a bomb." Danno informed. "Someone's planted a bomb in the building."

"Who planted the bomb?" Conan asked, after freeing Danno and the deliveryman fled out.

"I don't know." Danno replied. "I just came here to make a delivery. While I was tied up and rolling around, I heard them talking about a bomb."

"Professor, we need to report this to the police." Mitsuhiko reminded, the group having escaped the building.

"Where's Conan-kun and Fumio-kun?" Ayumi looked around to find the two boys missing.

"They're still not inside, are they?" Mitsuhiko realized.

"It's dangerous, you two." Danno rebuked, having caught Conan and Fumio at the crime scene. "We need to run. There's no way kids could disarm a bomb."

"Detective Takagi and Chiba, you got here real quick." Conan blinked, both he and Fumio were ushered outside by Danno when they saw Megure's team arrive.

"We received an anonymous tip that a light in that office was signaling SOS." Chiba informed.

"Detective Takagi," Ayumi tugged Takagi's pants. "He's the man who was being held in the office." she pointed to Danno.

"Could you tell us about that?" Takagi inquired.

"My name is Danno Masaru." Danno stated. "I'm a motorcycle deliveryman. When I went the third-story office of that building to deliver a package and receive a signature, a gun fell out of the pocket of a nasty-looking guy. I think he was trying to get his stamp out of his inside pocket."

"So, you were captured when you saw his gun." Takagi noted.

"I lost consciousness when I was struck on the head from behind." Danno recalled. "When I came to, I was tied up and couldn't move. That's when I heard them talking. They said they didn't need to kill me because they'd blow up the whole building."

"You used the light switch to signal SOS in Morse Code." Takagi related.

"Onii-san, why did you think to call for help using Morse Code?" Conan wondered.

"Because I used to be a Boy Scout." Danno blinked. "I happened to remember the Morse Code I learned then."

"By the way, is that your motorcycle?" Fumio inquired.

"That's my beloved bike." Danno nodded.

"Boom!... is what we thought would happen." Ayumi continued her narration, the bomb squad having opened the box where suspected bomb was in. "But all they found inside the box was an ordinary alarm clock."

Flashback

"We'll remove the blockade surrounding the building and leave just part of the forensics team." Takagi decided, after he and Chiba was informed that it was a false alarm.

"I know I heard them say they set a bomb." Danno pondered.

"Conan-kun, Fumio-kun, where have you two been?" Ayumi asked.

"You know, around..." Conan chuckled.

"Takagi-san, there was an armed robbery at the Kaneko Jewelry in Beika City." Chiba reported, after receiving a call.

"Unbelievably, a new armed robbery had taken place." Ayumi related. "That's how the SOS signal and confinement case took an unexpected turn."

Flashback to the following morning...

"I can't believe they're robbed again." Genta remarked, the Detective Boys were in the gathered crowd outside the burglared jewelry store.

"So, that's how it is." Conan realized what had happened. "Professor, can you bring the car around? We were made accomplices in an armed robbery without knowing it." he told the others as Professor Agasa drove off. "That Danno guy is probably working for the robbers."

"It's already quite suspicious he stayed within the building and used Morse Code to call for help when he had no idea when the bomb would go off and if or when anyone would notice his signal." Fumio reasoned.

"Don't you find it strange an armed robbery occurred during a fake bomb scare?" Conan posted a question.

"Ultimately, it caused a lot of police to gather at the building." Professor Agasa concurred. "They even dispatched a bomb squad. It's a good diversion."

"You need proof to suspect someone." Genta pointed out.

"That's what I thought, so Fumio and I observed him closely and didn't notice one." Conan replied.

"A bump." Fumio nodded. "He said he was knocked out by a blow, but there wasn't a bump on the back of his head or any similar wound."

"I thought he was suspicious, so I stuck a transmitter on his motorcycle." Conan revealed. "Danno's bike is parked right up ahead."

"Isn't that Danno-san?" Ayumi pointed to the knocked-out Danno lying face-down on the ground, the group having arrived outside an abandoned warehouse. "This time, he's got a big bump on his head." she spotted the lump on the back of Danno's head.

"He's just unconscious." Fumio assured. "He's still alive, don't worry."

"They probably had a falling out." Conan reasoned. "Mitsuhiko, call an ambulance and the police. Found it." he dug into the airbox under the bike seat and pulled out a screen. "A dash cam. I thought he might have one since the keys aren't in his pocket and his bike was parked strangely. He parked his bike so the warehouse would be visible and left his dash cam running." he rewound the recording that showed Danno arguing with one of his accomplices before the third robber knocked him out with a pipe to the back of the head. "I'm going to skip ahead." he fast-forwarded the footage and saw the camera capture the escape van. "Detective Chiba? We've identified the robbers' car. It's a blue car, license plate number... fifteen minutes ago, they drove west from the abandoned factory in Haido City 7-chome."

With Conan's information, Takagi and Chiba set up an organized car chase to trap the two robbers.

"Speed limits were broken and tires squealed in a back-and-forth description defying chase between the culprits and police that would even more Hollywood blanch." Ayumi recounted. "And then, a giant explosion... that never happened. And on top of that..." she recalled one of the police cars backflipped to avoid crashing into a stray cat.

Flashback to the 'car chase'...

"We quietly followed the car and arrived at a parking lot outside a housing complex." Ayumi recalled, she having spotted the robbers' vehicle.

"They're trying to steal a car." Conan realized, the group had hidden in a corner of the carpark.

"We can't just sit here and do nothing." Fumio pointed out.

"Professor, call the police." Conan made his decision.

"Aniki, why were the police chasing us?" one of the robbers asked, filing away at the car's lock. "We were basically obeying the speed limit."

"Quit your whining." the leader of the robbers chided. "We made off with all this treasure."

"Why did you betray Danno-san?" Conan asked.

"Because the bigger the share, the better, obviously." the leader of the robbers bragged.

"So you intended to use him and discard him from the start." Conan pondered. "You're the one who planned this. You asked Danno-san to cause a disturbance so you could rob the jewelry store. The attack on the jewelry store was simple enough. All you had to do was crush the dump truck you stole from the factory into the store. Since you were caught by a child like me, that means your plan was a failure. Want me to tell you why it failed? Danno-san knew you'd betray him. I'm telling this for your own good; you should give up and turn yourselves in."

"Kid, you should turn around and go home." the leader of the robbers dug into his pocket. "Otherwise, you'll regret it."

"I thought you might say that." Conan snorted. "Nasty adults like you should be punished." without a moment's hesitation, he ejected a soccer ball from his Anywhere Ball Dispensing Belt and knocked the two robbers out.
