Chapter 119: Police Academy Arc Wild Police Story CASE: Morofushi Hiromitsu
Seven years prior to present times...
"Good grief, why is the bathroom so dirty?" Matsuda complained, using a floor scrub on the muddy bathroom tiles.
"Didn't I tell you?" Date chided. "The guys who were rehearsing for this weekend's sports festival come in all dirty. They were all doing it in the rain yesterday, too."
"That reminds me." Furuya added. "Hiro's design for the sports festival's class banner was really cool."
"Thanks." Morofushi responded. "I thought it would be cliched to do a sakura blossom design for a police event, though."
"Didn't we get the finished product this morning?" Hagiwara reminded.
"That's right." Matsuda untied the banner from his chest. "I've been carrying it with me."
"Those are some nice colors." Hagiwara marveled.
"I can't wait for the sports festival." Furuya remarked.
"What's this?" Date peered closer at the cloth, spotting paw prints on it. "Paw prints from a cat? It smells a bit, too."
"I know, right?" Matsuda whined. "I wanted to show it off to the other classes, so I waved it outside my window. Not only did it get blown away, but a stray cat stepped on some poo and walked all over the banner. It really annoyed me, so I asked Hagi to help me catch the cat." he retied the cloth on his chest. "But this is what I got." he showed the group his bandaged fingers. "I was just about to send it for cleaning when Instructor Onizuka called for me. How about we talk about something exciting while we work?" he suggested.
"Speaking of which, Morofushi," Hagiwara started. "About the girl in the search request. Is something the matter?"
"You're right." Data concurred. "It's strange to respond like that if she's just a girl you see around town."
"The girl in the picture looks just like the girl I used to play with as a kid." Morofushi admitted. "She died of illness, but there's something I just..."
"If you said she was a childhood friend, is it possible that I've met her, too?" Furuya inquired.
"It was back when I lived in Nagano." Morofushi corrected.
"Why don't you talk about it?" Date insisted.
"It's really not such a fun story." Morofushi backed down.
"Stop that." Matsuda fumed, storming over. "I've held it in because Zero told me to wait until you open up to us. You've been looking for the person who killed your parents. You've been at a loss because the girl in the search request looks like your childhood friend and you remembered that incident."
"You're right." Morofushi admitted. "But I have to solve this case on my own. I don't want anyone else involved in this. If someone else dies..."
"Nobody's gonna die." Date, Matsuda and Hagiwara declared.
"We've been through so much." Date grinned.
"Trouble all this time." Matsuda added. "So, talk about it, Mister Hiro. We won't do anything bad."
"Fine." Morofushi relented. "It's been 15 years since time was frozen inside me. Since that frightful night full of the smell of iron. It happened around 7 pm when my parents and I were having dinner. The man who came to visit seemed to know my father. I heard a quiet voice talking in the hallway. Before long, the man's voice became rough and my mother looked in to see what was going on, I heard my father moan and my mother fixed her expression and turned to me. 'Hide in there for the time being. Don't come out until I say it's okay.'" he recalled, Mrs. Morofushi having stuffed him into a wardrobe. "That's what she said when you put me in the Japanese-style wardrobe. "She went to argue with that man, but eventually, I stopped hearing her voice. I started to smell something like iron filling the room. The smell seeped through the wardrobe I was hiding in. I heard a song. It wasn't my father's or my mother's voice. It was a high-pitched voice that pretended to be coaxing. It kept repeating the same phase. So, I fearfully peeked from inside the wardrobe. The man was holding a bloody kitchen knife while singing to himself. 'It's all right now. You can come out.' he said."
"Did you see his face?" Matsuda pressed.
"I was so scared that I couldn't." Morofushi admitted.
"Why was that man looking for you?" Furuya was puzzled.
"It wasn't me he was looking for." Morofushi replied. "He was calling a girl by her name. It was the girl I often played with as a kid. The girl who looked like the one in the police search request from last night. He was calling out for Yuri."
"Why was he looking for her at your house?" Date was confused.
"What was the girl's last name?" Furuya asked.
"I often called her by her first name, so I never remembered it." Morofushi answered. "We were in frit grade at elementary school, after all."
"You didn't see the man's face, but you saw his tattoo." Hagiwara reminded.
"That man slammed himself against the wardrobe I was in, as if his feet were stuck in blood." Morofushi related. "I saw it the moment he stood away from the wardrobe. He had a tattoo of a something that looked like a goblet on his shoulder. When he pulled himself away from the wardrobe, he held his shoulder like he was in pain. That was when I couldn't see the tattoo anymore because his hand was covered in blood."
"What did he do after that?" Date pressed.
"I don't know." Morofushi shook his head. "I fell asleep before I noticed it. I woke up to the sound of a door or something opening and thought I was in danger of being found. When I braced myself, the wardrobe door was open. I woke up to my brother coming back from camp at his middle school. It was already afternoon the following day and I had slept the entire time. I had mild amnesia due to the shock and couldn't even speak. We were given away to relatives; he stayed in Nagano while I went to Tokyo. I stayed non-verbal until I met Zero. I've remembered a lot of things recently. I want to look at the situation properly through a police officer's eyes and tell my brother about it."
"While you're doing this and that, you met three men who could be the culprit." Matsuda concluded. "We're already gone and talked to those three." he grinned.
"How do you know I was looking for the guy who killed my parents in the first place?" Morofushi was astonished.
"How could we not know?" Matsuda scoffed. "You're always looking up husband-and-wife murder cases in Nagano."
"Then again, he can't possibly be in Tokyo instead of Nagano and happened to be around me." Morofushi pointed out.
"You're right." Furuya agreed. "And the fact that the missing girl happened to look like your childhood friend from 15 years ago is also a coincidence. That's how one would normally think about it."
"We got our 'Cool Beauty' to psychoanalyze our culprit." Hagiwara winked. "And she pointed out the culprit could very well be related to that childhood friend of yours and is also stuck in the past for the last 15 years."
