Chapter 126: Behind the Scenes of the J League Finals
Time passes...
"Have fun today." Iwasada Yasuaki addressed the Detective Boys in the National Stadium lobby.
In the commentary box...
"It's the J League's 30th anniversary match." the announcer declared over the microphone. "Kawasaki Frontale are attempting to reclaim the league championship title from FC Tokyo, who can't possibly lose at the National Stadium, in this fantastic match. Kageyama Yūka-san of Hinatazaka46 is here as today's guest. Kageyama-san, what should we pay special attention to today?"
"The match-up between Oshima and Matsuki." Kageyama replied. "I've also got high hopes on Tachibanada."
"For today's special event, the children chosen by lottery will play a mixed friendly match with players from both teams." the announcer turned back to the field. "The ball is passed from Yoshida-san to Kojima-kun. He's trying to dribble through."
In the audience stands later...
"You don't look too happy, Haibara-san." Fumio noted, the others were gushing over the soccer players.
"This wasn't supposed to happen." Haibara pouted. "I was supposed to hold hands with my beloved Higo when we entered the pitch."
"I thought that might be it." Fumio sweatdropped.
"Yesterday's Big Osaka's match was amazing." Mitsuhiko remarked.
"Sanada made a ton of mistakes." Genta added.
"That's right." Haibara twitched. "Sanada missed a huge opportunity and Big lost the game."
"Sorry about that." the incognito Sanada voiced from behind.
"What are you doing here?" Professor Agasa wondered.
"Scouting the opposition, obviously." Fumio reasoned.
"I thought I'd give them a thrashing the next time we play them." Sanada declared.
"I hope you do so." Haibara deathpanned.
"After all, Tachibanada gave you a trashing in your match the other day." Genta pointed out.
"It's not surprising." Conan commented. "He's the captain of a team that's produced one great player after another."
"Spirits gave you a trashing in yesterday's match, too." Haibara added.
"You didn't have to be so blunt, Haibara-san." Fumio sympathized with Sanada's dejected look.
"Something's not right." Haibara stated. "Behind the Frontale goal." she gestured
"What's going on?" Mitsuhiko was stunned to see the stands empty. "There aren't any fans."
"Haibara-san, check the ticket entrance." Fumio suggested.
"Look at this." Haibara turned her tablet to a streaming site. "It's a live stream on social media. There's an argument happening outside the National Stadium. They're about to explode." she commented, the Frontale fans were blocked out at the entrance.
Turning to the large LCD screen in the stadium, Conan noticed a suspicious man in the audience. "What's his deal?" he wondered. Turning on his Telescopic Lenses, he scanned the audience. "Over there." he located the man in sunglasses. "That man."
"What about him?" Ayumi wondered.
"He wasn't watching the match at all." Fumio replied. "Instead, he's focusing only on his watch; as if... he's waiting for something or someone."
"The mysterious empty seats, the supporters not allowed entry and the mysterious man who's not watching the match." Conan muttered. "This calls for an investigation."
In the police headquarters...
"Detective Takagi, I need a favor." Fumio made a call to Takagi. "I'm going to send you a picture. Please help find out what you can about the person in the photo."
"Is there something the matter with them?" Takagi inquired.
"I'm just curious about something." Fumio replied. "I think he's involved in one of kaa-san's cases."
In the audience stands...
"I ran the photo you sent through the facial recognition software and got a match." Takagi gave Fumio a call a while later. "The man in the photo is Fukunaga Yuzo, 55 years old. He's the leader of a terrorist group who hasn't done anything major recently. In the past, he was the mastermind behind large-scale terrorist plots. Fortunately, his plan was stopped thanks to Mizuno-fukutaicho's predecessor before they could be carried out and his entire organization was arrested. He was found guilty and served time. He just completed his sentence the other day and was released. He's at the National Stadium?"
"Some supporters have been denied entry to the stadium as well." Conan informed, Fumio handing his smartphone over to their leader. "There must be something going on."
"Give me that." Sato was heard snatching Takagi's phone over. "We'll head there right now."
"What are we going to do?" Ayumi asked.
"We need to keep an eye on that man." Conan answered. "I'm also curious about what's happening outside. Haibara, I'm going out to check."
At the stadium entrance...
"Crap." Sanada winced, seeing the commotion with Conan. "Not even an unstoppable J Leaguer can do anything about this."
"All the fans should want to go in, but there are some people who don't." Conan pointed out. "The fake fans are only interested about what's happening behind the gate. Looks like Fukunaga hasn't learned his lesson."
"We have activity, leader." Fumio voiced over the Detective Badge. "Someone who's likely his accomplice handed him a large case; a large case that resembles a sniper rifle. Fukunaga's past terrorist plots involved the assassination of a VIP with a rifle."
"In other words, it's time for us to act." Genta declared.
"Don't." Conan warned. "It's too dangerous."
"We'll make sure we're not spotted." Mitsuhiko assured.
"We'd better hurry." Conan moaned. "Detective Takagi." he made a call to Takagi.
In the stadium's concourse...
"We'll check the news and social media to look into every VIP and celebrity in the stadium." Fumio informed, Conan was coordinating the search on Sanada's back.
"Have you found anything?" Conan asked.
In the audience stands...
"There are a lot of celebrities here." Haibara shook her head.
"But there's no connections to the suspect." Fumio added. "Wait..." he frowned. "What if the stadium is simply the shooting location?" he suggested.
"There are homes of important political figures and government, police and Self-Defense facilities." following Fumio's train of thought, Haibara enlarged the tablet's digital map.
"The real target is somewhere else." Fumio realized.
In the stadium's concourse...
After backtracking Fukunaga's past news, Conan realized the terrorist's true target.
"Conan-kun, I just arrived at the gate." Takagi's voice came over the phone.
"Detective Takagi, is the government, police or Self-Defense Force holding an event near the National Stadium?" Conan asked.
"A lecture on white-collar crime is being held at the National Stadium's Umayado Memorial Auditorium." Sato spoke through the speaker.
"Is Inspector Megure attending that lecture?" Conan pressed. "It was Inspector Megure who arrested Fukunaga Yuzo. And Fukunaga's accomplices are among the supporters shut out of the stadium. Instruct the staff to allow people with tickets inside."
"Whoever's left outside is a terrorist." Sato reasoned.
"Given the auditorium's location, the shooting location should be near Aoyama gate." Conan supplied.
On the stadium roof...
"He's really here." Sanada gawked, he and Conan spotted Fukunaga laid down on the roof in a shooting position.
"You're too late." Fukunaga smirked.
"No, you don't!" Conan activated his Anywhere Ball Dispensing Belt, ejecting an inflatable soccer ball.
"Stand back." Sanada moved in, sending the ball flying towards Fukunaga.
