Chapter 136: The Case of Ayumi's Illustrated Diary 4

Time passes...

"So, let's go hunt for a case." Ayumi declared, after bemoaning the lack of excitement for the past couple of days.

"And I'm being dragged into this, why?" Fumio deathpanned.

"You are part of the Detective Boys, after all." Mitsuhiko pointed out. "Besides, Ayumi-chan's illustrated diary is a case file."

"Shouldn't we be stopping her, though?" Haibara reminded.

"Let's just say the Detective Boys are reinforcing patrols this week." Conan suggested.

"Do you really think that would fly?" Fumio sighed.

"Ayumi-chan, is something the matter?" Conan noticed Ayumi suddenly stop in her tracks.

"I feel like someone's watching me." Ayumi replied. "Lately, I've been feeling that way whenever we hang out together."

"So, what are we doing here?" Conan asked, the children's first stop was the Mouri Detective Agency.

"Lots of clients come to detective agencies." Ayumi stated.

"Looks like there's a shortage of cases, after all." Fumio sweatdropped, seeing the snoring Mouri on the sofa.

"Sorry for bothering you." Conan apologized to the officer stationed at the police box after Genta and Mitsuhiko pulled Ayumi off.

"Why do I feel like we'd more likely meet ghosts than cases here?" Fumio muttered, Mitsuhiko leading the group to a seemingly haunted mansion.

"I may be imprudent for saying this, but I know a place." Haibara voiced, after the haunted mansion proved to be a dud. "It's a shop connected to Yoshida-san's illustrated diary."

"The Kaneko Jewelry Store." both Genta and Mitsuhiko exclaimed.

"It seems like cases happen there all the time." Ayumi got excited.

"Ayumi, your eyes are sparkling..." Fumio sighed.

"This way is faster." Mitsuhiko pointed to a dark alley, seemingly a shortcut.

"Are you kids heading that way?" Negishi Yuji stopped the children. "It's dangerous. I wouldn't if I were you. Some nasty guys hang around the road up ahead. I wouldn't want a bunch of kids to go there unaccompanied."

"But we want to go to Kaneko Jewelry." Ayumi informed.

"That's the shop next to Haronbo." Negishi recalled. "Then, you should take the bus. The bus-stop is right next to the pork shop on the avenue over there."

"You know the area well." Conan was impressed.

"Ward 4 is my responsibility, after all." Negishi shrugged.

"Thank you very much." Ayumi chirped. "Let's head to Kaneko Jewelry."

"Nobody's coming." Genta complained, a stakeout outside Kaneko Jewelry yielded no results.

"That's why I say cases don't very conveniently drop on our laps." Fumio shook his head.

"Where's Mitsuhiko?" Conan asked, returning with a bag of food.

"Mitsuhiko-kun headed towards the park to use the bathroom." Ayumi replied.

"Come to think of it, isn't he taking a little too long?" Fumio wondered.

"Mitsuhiko-kun's Detective Badge?" Ayumi blinked, Conan quickly locating the fallen badge on the grass.

"Haibara, call Mitsuhiko." Conan instructed.

"Already on it." Haibara was already making the call. "No use, though. His phone's off."

"Something must've happened." Fumio concluded.

"Let's review the situation." Conan went into leader mode. "Ayumi-chan."

"Right." Ayumi nodded and handed over her illustrated diary.

After going through the latest drawings, Conan pieced together who Mitsuhiko's kidnapper was.

"I guess you can't judge a book by its cover." Genta sighed.

"You actually can in this case." Conan corrected. "That man has exceptionally thick arms, compared to the rest of his body. Those muscles, his extensive knowledge of Beika City, and the fact that he called Ward 4 his responsibility..."

"He's either a deliveryman or a postman." Fumio realized. "And since we don't know his name, all we have to do is look up people responsible for Ward 4 in Beika City."

"Detective Takagi?" Conan made his call. "I'd like you to investigate something for me right away. Let me see that." he peered closer at a drawing after Takagi came up with nothing. This is it." he found the common object in each drawing. "You've done it again, Ayumi-chan."

At Negishi's hideout...

"What are you doing here?" Negishi was shocked to see the rest of the Detective Boys, Takagi and two policemen. "How did you find me?"

"So, why don't quit your useless resistance, Negishi Yuji-san?" Conan questioned.

"How did you know my name?" Negishi was startled.

"You used the special term 'Ward 4' to refer to the area, so at first, we thought you were a postman." Conan explained. "But, no one was assigned to Ward 4 of Beika City. Just as we'd thought we reached a dead end, I figured out something out when we investigated further."

"The post office isn't the only one that delivers things." Fumio supplied. "See the minivan's license plate?" he pointed to one of Ayumi's drawings. "Vehicles with green plates are either passenger or freight transport vehicles."

"Hyena Express, a company that delivers packages in Beika City, has a Ward 4." Conan added. "And you've been assigned to Ward 4 for ten years now."

"Because Yoshida-san wrote down your license plate number, it was relatively easy to find you." Haibara stated.

"Someone who knows the city as well as you kidnapped Mitsuhiko." Conan started. "You wouldn't take him back to your own house."

"All we had to do is locate every empty house around the city." Fumio noted.

"Empty homes in Beika City Ward 4. the distance between houses, and homes with tall walls that block vision." Takagi took over. "Including various conditions narrowed down the number of empty houses down to six, including this one. And the police searched every last one of them. Negishi Yuji, you are under arrest for kidnapping a minor." he arrested Negishi.
