Chapter 145: Stakeout 4

Time passes...

"This is the last ride." Genta led the Detectives Boys to the Ferris Wheel on the final day before Beika Amusement Park shut down in indefinite hiatus.

"Isn't that Detective Takagi and Detective Chiba?" Ayumi shouted, spotting the two detectives from her binoculars looking out from the park's security control room.

In the security control room...

"I haven't seen any likely suspects yet." Chiba noted.

"Stay calm." Takagi assured. "We still have an hour."

"It really is Detective Takagi and Detective Chiba." Ayumi beamed, opening the room's door.

"Did you guys quit being cops and became security guards?" Genta was puzzled.

"That's not what happened, Genta." Mitsuhiko sighed, seeing the unopened bread packs on the table.

"They're clearly on a stakeout." Fumio pointed out.

"You two are in disguise as security guards to stake out the amusement park." Mitsuhiko dissected.

"What case are you working on this time?" Ayumi's eyes sparkled.

"It actually started six years ago." Takagi gave in. "A jewelry store was robbed by two thieves. They stole jewels worth 500 million yen. A man named Kanieda Ippei was identified as the principal offender, but the day after the robbery, Kanieda was struck by a car and killed. But the investigation of Kanieda never found the stole jewels."

"They're hidden somewhere in this park, right?" Ayumi concluded.

"Kanieda worked part-time at this amusement park as a student." Takagi explained. "It was also near this area that he was hit by the car."

"But, where did he hide them?" Genta wondered. "This park is huge."

"We don't know either." Chiba admitted. "But his accomplice 'Ebishima' would know."

"Ebishima?" Conan echoed.

"Someone Kanieda met on a criminal website," Chiba clarified. "We don't know their identity, though."

"Ebishima likely meant to collect the jewels once the statue of limitations expired." Takagi added. "But if they learnt the park would be torn down before then..."

"They'll come to retrieve the jewels." Fumio realized.

"Since the park closure was announced, we haven't seen any movement on the stolen goods market, so it's likely the jewels are still hidden here." Takagi admitted.

"And since today's the park's last day, if Ebishima were to show up, it would have to be today." Fumio remarked.

"I lost my hat." Genta panicked. "I must have lost on the Ferris Wheel. I'm gonna go look for it."

"I'll go with you." Mitushiko ran out with his best friend.

"The security cameras you're watching are of the entrances to employee-only areas, right?" Conan hurried over to Takagi who was at the live feed display screen.

"That's Yamagata." Takagi explained, seeing Conan's focus on Genta and Mitsuhiko. "He's retired, but he volunteered to help with security today."

"He wanted to be here on the park's last day since he worked here for 50 years." Chiba added.

"There are only 20 minutes until the park closes." Ayumi was on lookout duty with Fumio.

"Maybe Ebishima won't show up." Chiba guessed.

"When today's their final chance?" Fumio was skeptical.

"Do you know anything about Ebishima besides their name?" Conan inquired.

"What we know from the security camera footage is they are around 165 centimeters tall, but we don't know their face or age."

"In a photo from Kanieda's funeral, there was a suspicious man." Chiba supplied. "He was about 165 centimeters tall and around 70 years old. His wife had never seen him before."

"We thought he'd pick someone younger to help him commit a robbery." Takagi added.

"Ebishima doesn't have to be a man, right?" Fumio pointed out.

"This is the security room." Chiba took the incoming call.

"I'm sorry, but my child is lost." a female voice sounded from the other end of the phone.

At the merry-go-round...

"It's Hiroko, my five-year-old daughter." Sakuramachi Kanako informed Chiba. "I looked away for a second and she's gone."

"What does your daughter look like?" Chiba asked. "Like her clothes and hair."

"She's wearing red shoes, a brown blouse and a black skirt." Sakuramachi replied.

"We'll help too." Ayumi popped in with Haibara in tow.

At the Ferris Wheel...

"Found it." Genta located his cap from under the bench Yamagata was sitting on. "I'm surprised it got blown all the way over there."

"That's a Baker Eats deliveryman." Mitsuhiko noticed the deliveryman ride past them on a bicycle.

In the security control room...

"Isn't the park closing soon?" Fumio was confused. "Who ordered Baker Eats?"

At the merry-go-round...

"Detective Chiba, look." Ayumi pointed to a fallen shoe outside the employee-only area.

"This is Hiroko's shoe." Sakuramachi gasped.

"Madam." Chiba was too late to prevent Sakuramachi from entering the employee-only area.

In the security control room...

"This is the security room." Takagi picked up the call.

"This is Ebishima." Ebishima replied. "I've planted a bomb in the amusement park.

Throughout the amusement park...

As if on cue, smoke-bombs were set off in the three employee-only areas.

After exiting the security control building, Takagi went after the Baker Eats deliveryman who had been instructed to deliver the ordered hamburgers to Beika Station.

Conan, on the other hand, headed off to the water fountain near the Ferris Wheel with Fumio and Mitsuhiko to meet up with Haibara.

"I'll handle the rest." Conan took over after Haibara informed him that she had lost sight of Yamagata. "You evacuate the park."

"This shoe..." Haibara picked up a second red shoe on the ground.

"Perhaps the lost girl is around here." Mitsuhiko noted, after Chiba reported to Takagi that it was a simply a smoke-bomb. "Someone removed this panel." he noticed the back panel of the water fountain was taken out.

Spotting the small prints on the ground, Conan pieced together who 'Ebishima' was.

At the amusement park entrance...

"I think my daughter, Hiromi, probably went home." Sakuramachi was stopped in her tracks by Chiba.

"Is that really true?" Conan questioned. "How's she supposed to go home without her shoes? There never was a missing daughter, was there?"

"Madam, you just said 'my daughter, Hiromi', didn't you?" Chiba also picked up on the discrepancy. "But initially, you said, 'my daughter, Hiroko'. Don't you think it's odd to get your own daughter's name wrong?"

"You seemed unsure when you were asked about your daughter's clothes, too." Conan pointed out. "You just picked out colors from the merry-go-round horses you saw, right? You reduced security by claiming your child was lost, removed the panel behind the water fountain and retrieved the jewels Kanieda hid. There were high heel shoe footprints in the flowerbed in front of the panel, Ebishima."

"I'm Chiba from the MPD." Chiba flashed his police badge. "May I search your bag in connection to the jewelry store robbery six years ago?"

"Go ahead, officer." Sakuramachi grinned. "Search all you want. This boy says I retrieved some jewels, but I don't have any jewels with me."

"I know you don't have them." Conan stated.

"I'm Takagi from the MPD." Takagi returned on the deliveryman's bike. Opening the food delivery pack, he unzipped a smaller bag, revealing a pile of jewelry.

"You created chaos in the park with your bomb threat and used that opportunity to hide the jewels in the Baker Eats bag." Conan added.

"Then, you planned to receive that bag at Beika Station." Takagi concluded.

"We assumed Ebishima the accomplice was a man." Conan noted. "But the accomplice was the woman closest to the culprit all along. Maybe you're the one who ran Kanieda over, too."

"I waited so long for the statute of limitations to expire." Sakuramachi, now revealed to be Kanieda Megumi, hissed. "Things were going so well, until they decided to tear down the park."

"Please come with us to the station on suspicion of robbery and murder." Chiba took Kanieda in.
