"Ooh, I'm so excited! New volume, new adventures! Hopefully things will get better," Ruby bounds to her seat after a good night's rest.
"Maybe in this volume we'll get to see ourselves in the Vytal Festival." Yang thinks the two previous volumes have been hinting at it, slowly leading up to it and this volume might be the one.
Everyone gets in their own seats, talking about what this volume might hold. A whole lot of shit, Raider thinks as she walks into the room with a yawn. But, she wasn't going to ruin what little happiness and optimism the group has left.
With a good stretch and a small sigh she asks if the nine are ready to start. The girl is met with mixed answers of excitement. Nodding, the remote appears in her hand, she floats in a criss-cross position and starts the episode.
The sun shines, all is quiet and serene. The crickets chirp, the leaves fall from the trees and on the edge of a cliff is Ruby, standing above Summer Rose's grave.
Oh, so that's how this episode is starting. Both Ruby and Yang watch the screen with a bittersweet feeling, sad they're starting with the topic of mom, but a bit of a nice feeling as Ruby visits her grave to talk.
Rose petals float from the girl's hood as she's up much closer now. "Hey mom, sorry I haven't come by in a while. Things have been… well things have been pretty busy, oh, dad's here too. He's y'know, dad; he's still teaching at Signal, but he told me he's going to be going out on some missions soon, I think he misses adventuring with you." Ruby pauses as her next words are much softer, "I miss you too."
Ruby flinches as she feels a hand on hers, turning her head at Weiss, but the girl refuses to meet her eyes as Ruby barely noticed the light tinge of pink on her cheeks. Ruby smiled anyway, appreciating the sentiment from the girl.
"Haven't gotten kicked out of Beacon yet," Ruby's voice is immediately back to something more fun and lighthearted, "So that's cool. I think being on a team with Yang helps, I keep her in line."
"Hey, you keep me in line? If anything I-" Yang was cut off by Weiss.
"Me and Blake keep the both of you in line, if we don't then the team would just be pure chaos." She knew that if Yang finished then those two would be going back and forth for who knows how long.
Yang and Ruby decided to put a pin in this discussion, promising that they would come back to it at some point if they don't forget about it.
"That was a joke, she's actually a really great fighter, you can tell she's learned a lot from dad. Well so are Weiss and Blake. Oh, they're my teammates, together we form Team RWBY, and yes before you ask that does cause a lot of confusion. Anyways, uh, I made a bunch of new friends and I met some…let's just say odd teachers."
"I think that's a nicer way of putting it," Yang leans over, whispering to her partner, overjoyed to see that got a small chuckle out of her.
"Oh! We've also stopped some bad guys too, I guess it's like they say 'Like Mother Like Daughter'. I still wonder why Ozpin let me into the school early, but, uh, I guess he'll tell me one day, you know how he is. It's funny, the more I get to know him, the more he starts sounding like uncle Qrow."
Knowing their uncle, Yang and Ruby couldn't decide if that was a compliment or not.
A bark from Zwei grabbed Ruby's attention as she turned around to see him and her dad. "Oh, looks like dad's back, I gotta go! He's dropping me off at Beacon for the tournament match before he goes on his next mission, wish me luck!" Ruby shouts excited as she drapes the hood over her head.
"Yes, so we will see ourselves in the Vytal Tournament!" Yang pumps her fist in the air, excited to see how they do.
Everyone else was just as excited, but a few couldn't help but be a bit nervous, remembering all the times Raider mentioned that this is the volume where all goes down the drain. The only question is, how?
Ruby paused, and turned around with one last sentence, "It was good to talk." Ruby ran back towards her dad, the sun prominent as birds flew to it.
Amity Colosseum is shown from a birds eye view, inside the crowds cheer as a match is already taking place, the terrain half and half; one of fire and the other ice. Ruby is swinging Crescent Rose, fending off her opponent, same as Blake as she's in a one on one battle with Reese.
"Yeah! Break their legs!" Nora shouts with passion towards the screen, even if that isn't going to be the outcome of the fight.
It might have just been themselves but that didn't stop Team Rwby from cheering on their counterparts. The rest of the room was filled with yells of encouragement for the four, or two since Weiss and Yang technically haven't even made their appearance yet.
Weiss swiped her opponent with Myrtenaster, behind her propelled herself off the ground using Ember Celica.
"Oho! It seems we have another astonishing bout ahead of us, wouldn't you agree professor?" Professor Port asks Dr. Oobleck as he shouts into the microphone. Dr. Oobleck's initial response was to correct the man, but answers, saying the match may be one of the closest four on four rounds of the tournament.
"I think fighting a corrupt organization really helped," Ruby states with confidence.
"For those of you just now joining us, welcome to the Vytal Festival Tournament! Broadcast live from the Amity Colosseum!" Professor Port announces as multiple airships from all over come to the floating stadium. "If this is your first time watching, allow us to break down the rules."
Dr. Oobleck takes over as he explains the rules of the tournament, "The tournament is divided into three distinctive rounds; teams, doubles, and singles. Age and school year are irrelevant. In this tournament, the only attribute being tested… is skill."
"Correct! The winners of this battle will elect two of their members to represent them in the doubles round. Followed by the winners of that round choosing one member to advance once again! The remaining combatants will then fight their way through the final bracket in the hope of achieving victory for their kingdom!" As Professor Port explains, a screen follows along with him, showing small figures.
"Oooh, I can't wait! Raider, can you please give us a hint, pleeeaassee!" Ruby turns around, practically begging the eager girl to give them something, not wanting to have to wait to know.
"Haha, yeah, no." Raider laughs before deadpaning the girl, telling Ruby she wasn't getting anything out of her. This results in the girl turning around with a pout.
"Now where's the fun in knowing what to expect?" Yang asks her sister rhetorically.
"And, yes, Peter, these certainly are some spectacular spectacles on which to spectate on, and I don't think anyone around the world is going to disagree with me on that." As Dr. Oobleck speaks, spectators from all around the globe are watching.
"Ah, and why would they? Now, let's get back to the match between Team RWBY of Beacon, and Team ABRN of Haven." Professor Port says in response.
"Quit yabbering and show us the fight!" Nora yells impatiently, it was only a few moments and she was already getting testy.
Reese hovers around the ice terrain as she makes her way towards Blake, throwing it. Blake deflects it back using Gambol Shroud, which continues back and forth as Reese rushes forward. When finally back in her hands she uses it as a shield as Blake uses her semblance and proceeds to go on the offense, pushing Reese back.
On her hoverboard again Reese advances towards Blake, the Faunus smirks as she creates an ice figure of herself that Reese crashes into, sending her to the air where Blake cuts her weapon in half. But, the broken halves of her hoverboard transform into revolvers that she fires a couple of times before landing right on her butt, the crowd groaning as she holds on to it in pain.
"That's gotta hurt," Yang winces at the screen.
"I hope she's okay," Though she might have been their opponent, Pyrrha wishes for everything to turn out okay.
Weiss gives the screen a grimace, it looked like the girl landed right on her tailbone.
Yang lets out a shout as she lands on the ground, immediately going into combat with Arslan. The area around them explodes as each of their fists connect, sending the both of them back.
Arslan wraps Yang's ankle with her weapon and flings her to the colder side of the arena. Yang attempts to get back up but is wobbly because of the ice, this leaves her to be an open target as Arslan comes and punches her, causing her to fly back. Nadir turns to shoot at her but gets blasted instead by none other than Ruby, the blast freezing his legs in place.
"Got your back sis!" Ruby yells to both the Yang on screen and directs that statement to her actual sister sitting on the couch over.
"Got your back!" Ruby shouts after shooting.
This got a small laugh from the girl, finding it a little humorous how they said the same thing, almost exactly.
"Who's got yours?" Bolin asks as he swings his weapon. A gravity glyph appears next to him, then a second later, Weiss, as she launches him through the glyph, leaving him to smash against a rock.
"My bff!" Ruby says happily, to which Weiss's immediate response was to deny that fact. "Yes…" Ruby whispers with a fist pump as Weiss darts off.
Everyone looks over to Weiss, waiting for her to refute, but nothing ever comes, this leading to Ruby gasping and squealing with delight. "Weiss!" Ruby was about to jump but Weiss brought up a hand, telling her not to push it.
Ruby does as she wishes, but she does bounce in her seat with excitement.
"Wow, what went and warmed your heart?" Nora asks with a smirk.
Pretty sure we're all looking at her, Yang thinks with a tiny laugh.
"Don't make such a big deal out of it," Weiss huffed.
Bolin looks up with the help of his weapon but frowns as Weiss stands in front of him, a white glyph under her as she charges forward. She doesn't go far as she stays near him, landing a few hits on him as she leaps over him to be in front of him. Weiss creates another white glyph that Ruby uses, propelling herself in the air to come crashing down on him. She's stopped by him and she stays in the air; frowning she fires Crescent Rose, shooting Bolin to the ground and for her to land right next to Weiss.
The two stand together as he gets up, not wasting a second Weiss summons ice shards to crash down on him as he comes running, they miss as he runs past Weiss to Ruby. Ruby shouts her disbelief as Bolin breaks a piece off the large red shards, throwing it to Reese.
Catching it she places the shard into her board, turning the green into red. Reese gave Blake a wink as she went over and freed Nadir from the ice.
Yang couldn't place why such a small act pissed her off so much.
Using the same board, Reese comes back to Blake, and shoots her back against the ice behind her, breaking it. As Reese spun to attack Blake, circles of fire followed. Blake used her semblance to get away, throwing Gambol Shroud, and effectively getting away. As Reese followed her she spotted a motionless Blake, her back facing the girl.
No one had to say it, but they were all thinking it, that was one of Blake's clones.
Reese goes for the kill, but is surprised as it's not Blake but a copy. In slow motion, Gambol Shroud is thrown in front of her, sticking to the chunk of ice to the right of her. Blake tightens the ribbon, it makes contact with Reese's stomach, leaving her defenseless. With this opening Blake kicks Reese into the wall, resulting in her being removed from the fight.
"Yeah Blake!"
"Yeah!"
"Woo!" Different shouts spread throughout the room at Reese's knockout, celebrating that that's one down, just three to go.
Blake was startled as Yang lightly shook her in excitement. "Yang…" With that one word Yang released, rubbing her neck with a small chuckle and apology.
"Ooooh, double whammy! Reese Chloris is eliminated by ringout and aura level!" Reese looks up at the screen as her aura level depletes and bangs her fist against the ground in frustration at Professor Port's announcement. Dr. Oobleck made a side comment that she really should have worn a helmet.
Arslan swings across the ice as Yang's right behind her, firing. Beside her was Nadir, who was about to shoot at Weiss before his own teammate, Bolin, was thrown at him. Creating a giant gravity glyph, Bolin and Nadir are lifted into the air before being smashed against each other.
A white glyph forms from under them, the two are then encased into a ball of ice that rolls around the terrain. Arslan sees this and just rolls her eyes at the boys before coming to their aid. Sliding in front of the ball of ice, Arslan plants a foot on the ground before using a single punch that destroys the ice, freeing the two boys.
Weiss shouts for Yang, getting her attention as she creates a wall of ice. Firing Ember Celica, Yang rides on the ice; Blake throws Gambol Shroud that Yang catches. Ruby helps Blake propel herself and both her and Yang are launched towards the remaining members.
"This is gonna be good," Nora moves around in her seat nonstop. The others felt the same way as they sat on the edge of the couches.
The three looked up in time as Blake swung Yang, who gave a battle cry as collided with all three, punching them back and effectively winning the match as they blew up from one of the fire geysers.
"Team RWBY Wins!" Ruby shouts as she jumps from her seat.
"We won!" Yang did the same as her sister, reasonably excited.
Shouts resonated all throughout the room as all nine of them cheered for the victory. "We're gonna advance!" Yang adds, pumping her fist.
It took a whole lot from Raider as she told them to calm down after they cheered for about ten minutes. At that point it was getting a bit out of hand.
Professor Port says that that's the match as Ruby and Blake jump up and down in excitement and Yang pumps her fist. Weiss, unsure, questions that they actually won. She's assured when Yang gives her a thumbs up.
"We did iiiitttt is anyone else starving?" Ruby jumps in the air, their location changing as they now all stand near the fairgrounds.
"Can't blame you for thinking about food after a fight like that," Nora says as she would have likely asked the same thing.
"I don't think anyone is blaming them, that was an awesome fight!" Sun starts off neutral before his voice turns into something more lively.
"Speaking of food…" Using her semblance Ruby dashes off into the kitchen, coming back into the room a few seconds later with a handful of cookies to snack on. This just left everyone sighing with smiles on their faces.
"I may have worked up an appetite," Blake says as her stomach grumbles violently. The girl holds her stomach with a look of surprise as her friends stare silently.
Blake couldn't help but feel her own cheeks burn in embarrassment.
"Gee, if only there were somewhere on campus to get food around here," The area expands, showing all the food stands around them, "Oh wait." Ruby places a hand on her shoulder, saying she forgets about the fairgrounds as well. "I was being facetious."
Questionable eyes stared at the screen. Having no clue what that word means.
Ruby abruptly raises her arms, "Wha- well if you were hungry why didn't you say so?!" Yang waves her hand, telling them she knows just the place to eat.
Weiss' scroll rings, causing her pause, when taking it out the caller is her father.
I must have still avoided his calls. Weiss thinks to herself with a frown.
"You okay Weiss?" Ruby must have immediately seen the expression as soon as it was placed because she turned to her partner, worry etched across her face.
"Yes, I'm fine, it's nothing to worry about." Ruby looked like she didn't want to let it go but Weiss assured that it was nothing.
Weiss's eyes narrow, aggressively putting her scroll away, and following her friends.
"Hey! Might be hard to eat without this!" Emerald calls as she holds Ruby's wallet between her fingers.
"What the- thief!" Ruby's face goes from shocked to aggravated as she sees her wallet in Emerald's hands.
Ruby, panicking, frantically checks her pockets. This leads to Emerald chuckling, "Good to see you Ruby." Ruby thanks her as the girl gives back her wallet.
Ruby takes a moment to let out a breath of relief, knowing that all her money wasn't going to be pickpocketed.
"Guess I dropped it, girl pockets are the worst!" Ruby shouts in annoyance as Yang comes up beside her sister, greeting the girl.
"Just left the stadium after watching your amazing fight, you guys were awesome!" Emerald tells the two happily.
"She finally says something true for once," Nora mutters bitterly.
Ruby blushes and stutters embarrassed nonsense. As Ruby's cheeks remain red, Blake states that her team has progressed as well. "Y'know, I feel like we never see your other teammates," Weiss says, sounding slightly disappointed.
Yang asks her how they did, Emerald clicks her tongue and their fight appears on the screen. Emerald and Mercury fire their weapons, Cinder kicks one of the opponents to the ground, and the kid looks up to see a girl looming over him. She smirks, her eyes changing to pink and brown as she kicks his face.
"Neo…" Yang grumbles with disdain.
"Really well," Emerald answers as they're back to the present. Ruby congratulates her, asking her if she wants to grab victory food with them. "Oh, gosh, that's so nice of you, but my teammates are all kind of…introverted." All five look behind her as Mercury picks up a boot, sniffing the inside.
That seems like a new kind of introverted if you asked Raider. All the kids grimace as they see Mercury smell the boot.
"I get how people smell freshly bought books or a new can of tennis balls, but a boot?" Jaune says, a little weirded out.
"Really socially awkward," Emerald adds, Team Rwby turning the attention back to Emerald as they all suck air through their teeth. Yang voices that she gets the picture. "So yeah, looks like Merc and I are gonna be moving on to the doubles round, what about you guys?"
"Well, as the leader of this team I thought long and hard about this decision," Ruby starts with Weiss butting in, informing her the whole team put it to a vote, clarifying. "Uh, yes, uh, but I decided that we should put it to a vote."
Oh Ruby, people sighed good heartedly, shaking their heads.
"We voted for Weiss and Yang," Blake says as she raises a hand to gesture to the two in question.
"Aw yeah! Team Freezerburn for the win!" Yang would normally bring the person into a side hug, but the girl was all the way on the other side of the room.
Both Weiss and Yang have completely different responses, Weiss curtsies and says she'll happily represent team Rwby, while Yang pounds both of her fists together telling Emerald that two of them will kick some butt.
Their responses were found so funny because the two are polar opposites, and the students will cease in finding the moments between them funny.
It also goes to show how different their childhoods were and how they were raised, that's the interesting thing to look at, the two coming from different worlds.
Emerald gives the two a chuckle, "Well, if Mercury and I see you down the line don't think we'll go easy on ya." Yang gives a laugh as both her and Weiss give her a determined look, not wanting to have it any other way.
Closing the conversation, Emerald tells the four that she's gonna go catch some more fights. Ruby looks back and gives the girl a wave, shouting for her to have fun. The moment Emerald's head turns her expression falls to something disgusted, Mercury asks her how the 'new friends' were.
"I hate them," Emerald states without missing a beat.
"Hey, well fuck you too," Was Yang's immediate response, a fake smile plastered on her face. Everyone was thinking it, except for Jaune and Ruby, but Yang, expectantly, was the one to actually say it.
Mercury reminds her that orders are orders. "I just- how can they be so happy all the time?" Emerald shouts, frustrated while intertwining her fingers. Mercury points a finger at her and wonders if she at least got what they wanted. "It's the heiress and the bimbo."
Bitch… Yang growls, aggressively crossing her arms. She wasn't the only one ticked off by the response, two people more so than the rest.
Mercury thinks it over, his hand placed on his chin, "Hm, alright, at least now we know who we're working with.
Team Rwby all sit at one of the stands, Yang telling shopkeep that she'll have a bowl of the regular. Not a moment later and a large bowl of noodles slid towards her.
The kids in the room with a large appetite simply marvel at the huge amount of food.
Eager, Ruby quickly asks for the same, and her wish is granted. Weiss asks the man if he has anything with low salt, but she was ignored as she was given the same thing as the previous two.
Blake gives Shopkeep a look, nodding to him. The man sprints out back and swiftly places a large bowl of noodles with cooked fish on top, thus leaving Blake's mouth watering.
The same could be said for the Blake in the room as she envied her on screen counterpart right now, wishing she had that in front of her.
Yang was about to open her mouth with a smirk, but the look Blake gave her immediately shut her up, daring her to say something.
"Aww, Weiss, what's the occasion?" Yang asks happily as Weiss pulled out her card to give to Shopkeep. Weiss tells her to consider it as a thanks for sending her to the doubles round.
Not a second later her card was ninja starred onto the wood, Shopkeep pointing to the register that her card had been declined.
Ugh, father, I just know you had something to do with this, Weiss fumes, thinking of the only logical possibility.
"What? How can my card be declined? I was barely into my monthly allowance," Weiss and her friends sulk. Blake tries to discreetly pull her bowl closer towards her but it was hastily taken away from her, saddened she lays her body over the counter.
Blake held off the strong urge to reach out her hand, wanting the fish to come back to her.
"Maybe I could help?" Pyrrha announces as she and the rest of Team Jnpr come up to the counter. Ruby shouts her name merrily, Yang telling her she didn't have to.
" But she could!" Both Blake's quickly said at the same time, this getting a few laughs out of her friends.
"Well, I think you all earned it after that battle," Pyrrha continues, as well as Jaune asking if they could join them.
All eight of them sat full and content, pushing their empty bowls away and holding onto their satisfied stomachs. "Are you sure it's wise to eat before a fight?" Ren asks Pyrrha, the amazonian replies that it will give them energy. A moment later Nora let out an enormous belch.
Jaune groans, face planting the counter, "Uuugh, if I barf I'm blaming you." Nora puts both of her hands on the wood, demanding he aim it at the enemy.
"Nora, that's disgusting," Ren says with a grossed out face, but the girl next to him wasn't planning on taking her future words back anytime soon.
"Nora, that's disgusting, but if you do feel the urge." Jaune gives Ren a thumbs up, telling him he'll keep that in mind.
Pyrrha stands up, telling the others they should be off, Ruby asks if they think they're ready.
"Of course! We got a world-renowned fighter on our team, one's basically a ninja, I can bench press five of me, Jaune, we trained all year, our weapons are awesome, Glynda barely yells at us anymore."
"You think it's because Glynda didn't see the point in correcting something that can never be rectified?" Raider asks, voice teasing.
"Hey!" Ruby wants to say some kind of retort, but realizes she doesn't have one. She trails off as Raider gives her a knowing look, her silence speaking volumes.
"And, uh, Jaune!" Nora finishes enthusiastically, gesturing to the man who looks like he's about to pass out. Ren asks the boy if he's going to take it, but Jaune just tells him she's not exactly wrong. "I'm kidding, he knows I'm kidding. Don't be so nervous, the worst that can happen is we lose, then it's just a few more years of walking around school with everyone knowing we're failures, our friends will slowly abandon us to preserve their social status, we won't be able to show our faces in class, no one will sit with us in the cafeteria, and Ren and I have no parents, we have no home left to go to, we'll be officially renamed Team LOSE-iper." As Nora rambles on the color drains from her entire body and she ends it all, smacking her head onto the wood.
All eyes were wide, some being thrown in Nora's direction. No one honestly had a proper response to that.
"Soooo, yeah, we're feeling pretty good," Was Ren's response to Nora's entire tirade.
"Don't fret. If anything we should be looking forward to a fight with actual guidelines and not… well, murderers." Pyrrha looks on the bright side as she places her hands on Nora and Jaune's back.
The others gave a shrug, Pyrrha had a good point.
Yang tells them not to sweat it, they've all faced worse. "Let's see; Grimm invasions, violent extremists, a destructive sociopath." Blake puts a finger out for each one named. Ruby exclaims that that's still while they're in training, she excitedly wonders what it'll be like when they all graduate. Weiss looks down sadly, mumbling that she hopes she can pay for a meal by then.
Weiss was feeling the same way as her counterpart, she just didn't outwardly show her emotions.
Professor Port's voice reverberates throughout the fairgrounds, "Will Team JNPR please report to the battle ground immediately."
"Yes! Like they were scheduled to, several minutes ago!" Dr. Oobleck adds, clearly peeved.
"Well, if Glynda doesn't yell at us anymore then others will do it for her," Jaune says, his upper half slumping forward a bit.
Team Jnpr take this as their cue to leave, getting up begrudgingly they head out. The whole colosseum cheers as Team Rwby enters to go cheer on their friends.
Emerald and Mercury follow behind them but go in the opposite direction to find a seat. The crowd goes wild as Team Jnpr and Team Brnz step onto the battlefield. "I wonder who's gonna win," Mercury ponders whilst stuffing his face with popcorn. Emerald scoffs, as if they didn't already know.
"Oh come now, even if you know how a story ends, that doesn't make it any less fun to watch." Cinder grabs a popcorn kernel from Mercury's bucket, heating it up between her fingers until it popped. Cinder sits in her seat and all three of them smirk.
"So what they're saying is they know who's going to win the fight. I hope it's us…" Jaune mumbled the last bit.
"Team JNPR of Beacon vs Team BRNZ of Shade!" Professor Port announces the contestants. Screens around them scroll as they decide the terrains for the battle.
The terrains that have been picked were forest and thundering mountains.
Professor Port gives a countdown from three. yelling for them to begin, but they all freeze before any actual fighting could start.
"What?!"
"Aww man…"
Each member of Jnpr showed their disdain as they would have to wait a bit longer before their fight was actually shown.
The shattered moon is prominent in the sky, a single rose petal falls, landing on its flower, though the flower is crushed as an ursa runs right over it.
"So this must be the volume's intro," Blake hums to herself.
Many other grimm follow. The screen spins into spiral, presenting Team Rwby, Team Sssn, Team Jnpr, and Cinder and her lackeys on the Amity battlefield. Cinder's eyes burn red, fire flowing around; they're transferred into a burning eye from an ursa.
All sorts of Grimm rampage and invade Beacon Academy, some even climbing Beacon's tower.
Ren, being the ever observant, takes the invasion into account. Perhaps a warning of the future? He wouldn't be surprised, so, with that information in mind, he wrote it down, keeping the knowledge for later.
Grimm try to make their way to Ozpin and Glynda but are stopped by a barrier. In front of the two, the wall shatters into shards, revealing Ironwood and all his troops, covering the entire sky.
Blake walks through the red forest, halting as she sees Adam and all the White Fang behind him.
Ren takes note of this as well, feeling this volume will actually give them something to work with.
Grimm and students all race towards each other, but the screen is covered by a blinding light as it shows Yang fighting Mercury, Blake battling Adam, Weiss facing Emerald, and Ruby taking on Cinder.
Weiss smiles as she stands beside her sister, Winter.
A happy gasp left Weiss, her expression clearly showing elation at the sight of her sister. "Winter!" Weiss shouts happily.
Yang and Ruby stand next to their uncle.
"Uncle Qrow!" Ruby throws up her hands, a bright smile plastered on her face, "Oh, I can't wait to see him!"
Winter and Qrow stand face to face, tension evident between the two.
Now people were curious as to what that's about.
