Chapter 4: Night Shift
Renesmee knew they weren't dangerous, but she feared for their lives. They were so different from them, too different. And none of her family would like their kinship. Except maybe Sabrina and little Jake.
She was torn between telling them the truth, or leaving everything as it was. She could ask Sabrina to use her power and make them forget everything, but the truth was that she wanted her family to know everything. She wanted them to be friends with them and vice versa. She sighed.
"Is everything okay, honey?"
"Yes, Mom, everything's okay… What if they weren't dangerous?"
"What, excuse me?" Bella asked.
"What if they weren't dangerous? They saved Irina and from Alice's vision it seems like one of them didn't want a fratricidal war. I mean, maybe they're good, maybe…"
Bella looked at her daughter in surprise.
"Jake, can you take her to her room please?"
"Why?" the little girl asked.
"It's not something a little girl can hear," her mother replied.
"Yes I can," the little girl said resentfully.
Everyone looked at Nessie in stupor.
"Jake, can you take her to her room please?"
"Why?" the little girl asked.
"It's not something a little girl can hear," her mother replied.
"Yes I can," the little girl said resentfully.
Everyone looked at Nessie in stupor.
"Please don't send me away. You introduced me to the Volturi. You thinks that this is worse?"
"Honey, we don't know who we're dealing with. They're not vampires, and even hybrids."
"Your mother is right Renesmee. Even I can't understand how she could have had a vision when they're not like us," Alice said.
"Maybe it's because they're part vampire or maybe it's because you have had a connection with Sabrina…"
"As excuse?" Edward asked alarmed.
The little girl put hands on mouth. She had said something too much.
"Do you know who they are?" Edward asked angrily.
The little girl began to cry.
"Do you know who they are?" her father urged.
"Stop it, Edward, you're scaring our daughter."
"Let's all calm down. My darling, do you know them?" Carlisle asked softly.
The little girl nodded. Everyone was speechless.
"Why didn't you say anything?" grandfather asked.
"I couldn't, I was afraid you would hurt them. They are my friends."
"Honey, they are dangerous, they manipulate people's minds, they did the same thing to me, they made me believe that one of our classmates was one of them…"
Alice didn't finish her sentence.
"Mike is one of them, aunt. And no, they are not dangerous."
Carlisle decided to take the little girl with him to talk to her in private.
"Then honey tell me everything."
"I have met two of them in the woods. Jacob was with me too, but he doesn't remember anything about the meeting. Sabrina manipulated his mind. None of them are evil, in fact they are better than us. They found a way to feed themselves without killing humans or animals."
"How?", Carlisle asked curiously.
"They take blood from the Forks Meat Consortium… sometimes."
"Sometimes?", Dr. Cullen pressed softly.
"When is needed they donate their blood to Bree and Didyme."
Carlisle looked at the little girl in amazement. Bree and Didyme were names he had heard before.
"How they donate?"
"Yes, their blood regenerates and when Bree and Didyme don't have anything to eat, they think about it. they lacerate their wrists and…"
The little girl couldn't finish her sentence.
"Honey, they might have manipulated your mind and…"
"No, Grandpa. They didn't. They're not monsters, even if they think they are."
Renesmee burst into tears. Bella heard her and went to her daughter.
"Carlisle!"
"It's okay, Bella. It's just all so absurd. My shift at the hospital starts soon. I have to get ready. Don't ask the little girl any questions right now. I have to check on something first."
oOo
"Good evening Dr. Cullen"
"Good evening Inspector Swan, did something happen?"
"A small accident, a boy fell off his motorbike. Maybe he caught something."
"I understand. Good evening Mrs. Miller, has Nurse Nolan arrived yet?"
"Yes, she's taking care of a boy who fell off a motorbike."
-Good, she's here- thought the doctor.
"Good evening Sabrina."
"Good evening Dr.…"
Sabrina didn't finish her sentence. Her eyes began to water.
"Sabrina!" Dr. Cullen said in alarm.
"It's all right, doctor, it's just a pollen allergy. I apologize, I need to do some tests at the boy."
Carlisle immediately realized that she was lying. It was the middle of winter. The doctor continued to watch the woman.
"Don't worry, I'm faster than the pain," she said to the young man.
"I hate needles and blood," the boy said.
"Yeah, me too," the woman replied. "Done."
"Wow, I didn't feel anything. She is really good."
"Thank you."
"Nurse, why the tests?"
"I think you know."
"My parents?"
"You're a minor, I have to tell your parents."
The boy went out. Sabrina stopped for a moment. She was about to start crying again. She took a deep breath. Carlisle's eyes widened. She was breathing. He also realized that she had a heart, not a still one like his, but a living heart, beating.
-What are you really Sabrina, a hybrid different from Renesmee, a vampire... an evolution of it- he thought.
Sabrina could barely hold back her tears. She began to carefully observe the bottle with the blood she had just drawn. Her irises dilated slightly. Carlisle didn't stop looking at her secretly. She knew it.
"Good evening Mrs. Davis. This is Nurse Nolan. Your son is here in the hospital, he had an accident… no, fortunately it is not serious, but I must inform you that the boy has used a narcotic substance: marijuana."
After the call, the nurse threw the blood in the sink. She cleaned everything up and went out to lock herself in one of the hospital offices. She cried her eyes out. Carlisle could hear her, but he didn't know what to do. Luckily, apart from the young man, there was no emergency. The patients were sleeping peacefully. The girl stayed in the small room for over an hour. When she came out, he tried to talk to her.
"Sabrina, we need to talk," the man said softly.
"I can't, farewell Dr. Cullen."
Sabrina ran out of the hospital at an abnormal speed. Carlisle was shocked, the girl was faster than a normal vampire.
oOo
"What happened Sabrina," her brother asked.
"Oh Mike I'm so sorry, I ruined everything. They know… I didn't have the courage to manipulate my fa… Dr. Cullen's mind."
The young man hugged his sister.
"It's okay, my sister. This isn't the first time we've move."
As I said in the first chapter, this story is old and published on EFP (italian site) always with the same title: Gli eredi di Volterra. At that time my credentials were different (UffaUffaUffa), but I lost them.
If someone wants to read the old version (this one is different, slightly different… it depends on the point of view) you can find it there. Happy reading
