Chapter 15: Demetri
Leah found herself in her house. She heard the voices of her mother Sue, Billy, Sam, Paul and Emily. She heard them talking about her and Seth. She heard Paul's altered voice angry with her. He said that she had disappeared and had involved her brother only to boycott her cousin and her husband so they wouldn't be given this house.
-My house, the house where I grew up... because they want my house-
She listened more carefully and heard her mother say that she hadn't told her anything so she wouldn't have to argue with her.
When Sam and Emily got married they went to live in the den used by all the wolf boys and their companions. It was her mother who said that it wasn't the right place for a young couple and that she would find a solution. Her wedding gift to them.
-But not this house, not this one- Leah began to cry softly.
She heard Emily's voice say that she and Sam could move into the little house with the white picket fence. The same house Sam wanted to buy for Leah when they were still together and wanted to get married.
The young Clearwater girl fell to her knees, but she got up almost immediately when she heard her ex-boyfriend's hurried footsteps, as he climbed the stairs. She didn't want to see him, not after yet another nasty thing fate had in store for her. But she was also afraid of his reaction and of what she had become. She wasn't herself anymore and she was afraid of herself. She wished she had wings in that moment. She disappeared in the blink of an eye. A few seconds later Sam entered her room, but there was no one there. The boy only smelled a very sweet scent: vanilla and ginger.
"LeeLee," he said in a breath.
oOo
Leah didn't know where she was. All she saw were small airliners. She didn't understand how she was able to move so quickly from city to city, from state to state. She started to tremble when she smelled a very sweet perfume, but which reminded her ofthe stench ammonia.
-Vampire- she thought.
"How lucky to meet you here, wolf woman," a silken voice said from behind her.
Leah could feel him approaching, but not at vampire speed. She noticed that there were other people nearby... humans.
"Let me introduce myself. My name is Demetri, Demetri Volturi."
-He's one of the Italian vampires.- Leah took a deep breath. She had to stay calm.
"I didn't realize wolf women smelled so good. Thinking back, I sense something different now; you're different, wolf girl," he continued.
He was close. Leah could hear the rustle of his robes. She thought about how to get back to the Cullen house, she thought about her brother Seth. He was gone in the blink of an eye.
oOo
The girl returned to the Cullen mansion next to her brother. The boy was awake now, along with Mike and Evan. Doctor Cullen's ministrations had allowed the boys to wake up earlier than expected. Edward approached Leah.
"What's happening Edward?" Leah asked tearfully.
"Leah, you've undergone a transformation. You're no longer a shapeshifter, but a vampire-wolf hybrid," the young Cullen said.
"What?" The wolf girl was worried, but not distressed. Jasper was using his power.
"It's okay Leah, it's not…"
"No damn it, it's not okay." Leah wanted to scream, but Jasper's gift kept her calm.
Eleazar meanwhile approached Carlisle. He whispered that the girl could teleport, while her brother was telekinetic. Leah had heard everything, as had Seth.
"Oh that's great, I have a power like you?", the little wolf boy said enthusiastically.
Edward looked at Seth, then Leah and finally Sabrina. He mentally asked his sister to manipulate Leah and Seth's minds to keep them calm and not hear what he had seen in the wolf girl's mind. Sabrina agreed.
"Daddy Leah has been to the Volturi."
"What, what did that stupid girl do," Bella said angrily.
"Love is not her fault. She needs to learn to handle her power."
"Why do you defend her, what happened to you, darling," Bella asked.
"Now I know the truth, my love. I think I always knew, but I denied it to myself, because it was easier to hate her," Edward said in a whisper.
Edward looked at his father.
"She saw, or rather sensed Demetri. He arrived at the private airport in Seattle. He's here on Aro's orders. He realized we're hiding something, he wants her too," she said, pointing to Leah.
"How did she figure that out?"
"I don't know, I just saw Aro's conversation with his brothers. I saw it through Leah's mind."
"What do you think he wants from her?", Carlisle asked.
"Nothing good," the boy replied.
The Denali girls helped the hybrids, Didyme and Irina, return to Forks. Seth and Leah, still monopolized by Sabrina's power, accompanied them.
"We will stay here and welkome Demetri in without any problem. The tracker must not suspect anything," said Dr. Cullen.
"We have a problem though. Demetri saw Leah. He knows where to find her. He can track all of them because he monitored the shifters during our encounter with the Volturi."
"Add this problem to the mix. In my vision, little Evan was imprinted with Alec," Alice said.
"Are you sure?" her father asked.
"Yes," she said dryly.
"I don't know if that was really imprinting," Edward continued. "It was different from Jacob's and the other wolf boys. But there was still a very strong attraction between them. A supernatural attraction on Evan's part and… I think Alec had a classic love at first sight."
"Maybe as a hybrid he has a totally new imprinting," Carlisle said.
"What happens now? If Demetri goes to them first…" Esme couldn't finish her sentence.
"Why don't we warn Mike. His power can neutralize Demetri's and Sabrina can monopolize his mind," Eleazar suggested.
"Good idea, my friend," Carlisle said.
oOo
Demetri arrived in the late afternoon. He hadn't gone to the reservation or to Forks yet, also because at a certain point he could no longer perceive the shapeshifter's presence.
From where he had settled he could see the Cullens. He understood that they were waiting for something, or someone, even if they pretended not to know anything about his arrival. As a good tracker he had learned to read lips, body movement, gesture language and facial expressions. He had also trained himself to shield his mind to prevent their reader from reading his thoughts.
He saw an open window and jumped in. The boy guessed that it must have been the room of the Cullens' granddaughter when she came to stay with her grandparents. He looked carefully at the space until his gaze was struck by a series of photos. They all portrayed the same girl. A very beautiful girl with eyes and hair as black as ebony, skin the color of copper. The shape of her eyes was slightly almond-shaped and surrounded by thick, long eyelashes. Full, inviting lips, a swan-like neck and high cheekbones. Strong features, but also fine, sweet and somehow, noble.
-Who are you my beautiful- thought the vampire.
The woman's face was frowning, but the hound cared little. He found the girl irresistible. He smiled persuasively, took one of the photos and put it in the inside pocket of his coat. He left as he had come in, but first he wanted to do an experiment. He had noticed that despite his thoughts on the young woman portrayed in the photo, no one had intervened. Not even Edward. He then thought of something bad to do to the little human vampire. Edward did not even approach the room. Demetri understood that Bella's shield could shield protect them from his power, but it protected him too from their power. The boy appeared at the main door, next to Bella's father who had just arrived. In his hand the man was holding two thermos containers.
"Good evening," the vampire said politely.
"Good…", Inspector Swan didn't finish the sentence. He froze, looking at the vampire's red eyes. Demetri had forgotten to put his contacts in.
"Can I help you, Mr…?", the vampire said.
"Charlie, Charlie Swan," the man replied.
"Swan? Are you related to Bella?", the boy asked, increasingly curious.
"I'm her father. Are you one of the Cullen family's guests?"
"Yes," he replied.
The boy smiled even wider.
"Let me give you a hand," he said politely.
"Thank you, son."
The young vampire smiled as he heard the man call him son. If it was Felix in his place, he would have torn him to pieces. He took the airtight containers. He could smell blood inside them. Animal blood.
Mr. Swan knocked on the door.
"It's me guys, I brought what you asked for the new ones."
Demetri couldn't stop smiling. Unknowingly, the man was giving him information. He heard Esme's relieved voice from inside the house saying that it was Charlie and not Demetri and that their boys were safe for now. The woman opened the door.
"Thank you Mr. Swan," Esme said.
"You're welcome. One of the boys you host helped me," the man replied.
"One of the boys… Mike why are you here, you have to protect your family with your power, especially Leah, Aro wants her…"
"Good morning Esme," the boy said.
Esme looked at the young man and fell backwards. She was scared. Demetri watched the scene curiously. He had learned many things.
"Where should I put them?" he asked calmly.
"Esme, is everything okay?" Charlie asked worriedly. He hadn't understood much of what Esme had said, but he had a hunch that these were the kinds of things that were best left not know.
Carlisle ran to his wife to help her up. The Volturo entered without any problems. He headed into the open kitchen and placed the containers on the table. The boy began to sniff the air. There were several scents he recognized: those of the Cullens, those of the Denalis, Renesmee, and a weredog. He smelled two familiar scents. One reminded the boy of Irina's perfume, the other of the immortal girl killed almost two years ago. But it was other scents that caught his attention, including that of the wolf girl.
He thought back to his encounter with her. He was about to touch her when she suddenly disappeared. Thanks to his power, he knew that at that precise moment she had gone to the Cullens. But now he no longer felt her presence. He began to ask himself some questions: how had she managed to escape like that? Why couldn't he hear her anymore? Two questions that he would have to find the answer to. He couldn't return to Volterra empty-handed.
This story is longer and different than the original one I wrote years ago with my nik-name: UffaUffaUffa on Efp.
For me Sue is capable of doing something like that. This and more about the golden couple of LaPush, and I read similar things in some fanfics. As for Paul's reaction, he, like the other wolf boys, is pro-Emily. Leah's cousin has bought everyone's affection. I don't love Sam, I hate Emily. And finally Demetri arrived.
Documentary moment: if someone is wondering why he remembers Irina and Bree's smells... it's thanks to the olfactory bulb that is located next to the hippocampus. Smells can remain in our memory for years and years and are connected to episodic memory with clear images linked to our past. I know something about it.
