Chapter 30: Recovery
Link's POV
We talked excitedly with one another, both thankful for the second chance at life I had been given. She got up to leave to tell everyone I was okay, but she was stopped at the doorway by Midna. She had a box of chocolates in her hands. "Oh, Sally! A kind gentleman asked me to give these to you. He said he hoped it would make you feel better."
"Oh. You can tell him thank you, but I won't be needing them..." She moved out of the way and as soon as Midna saw me, her jaw dropped as she threw the box of chocolates into the air. Each little morsel flew out of the box and dropped all over the floor.
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!" She screamed, flying over to me and pinching my cheeks. "YOU'RE ALIVE?! THANK THE GODDESSES YOU'RE ALIVE!"
"OOOOWWWW!" I yelled.
"Be easy on him!" Sally giggled.
Midna and Sally both came over to me and hugged me as we all laughed.
I still feel shocked at how I actually woke up that day. I thought for sure I was done for. One thing that still lingers and reminds me of my sacrifice...is the pain. It's so intense that no matter what I do, I feel a throbbing sensation pulsate throughout my whole body! I don't think I've ever been this gravely wounded in my life. Because of it, I've had to stay at the hospital and take physical therapy to gain my strength back. It hurts like hell.
But when I see Sally's face everyday, smiling and laughing at me as I gag over medicine, knowing that I saved her life, I understand the worth of what I'm going through, and that's why I have to keep on trying. For her and myself.
This morning I was to have a physical therapy session. At this one I had to try to get out of bed by myself. Sitting up was the worst, and after having to do it for the first time the last time I had physical therapy, I wanted to stab myself in the eye! Sally was in the room with me, thankfully, and tried to keep me distracted by talking to me and keeping things light-hearted. Midna came to join in on the "party" (whoopie?), but despite what I thought her intentions were, which would have been to torture me in any and every way, she was very supportive and...nice? (Whoa, HOLD UP! Okay, had to be sure I wasn't giving her too much credit...I almost couldn't believe what I was writing! ;) ) After a few minutes my physical therapist, Mr. Arnold, arrived in the room. He was scrawny, with short brown hair only a couple inches long and big glasses that always slipped down his nose. His glasses began slipping without fail as he knelt by my side. He pushed them back up with his finger. "How are you today, Sir Link?"
"Good." I replied with a gulp.
"That didn't sound too convincing." He told me with a smile.
"He's nervous." Sally spoke shyly.
"Am not!" I tried to raise my voice, the hoarseness I felt making it difficult.
"Don't forget you're still not at optimum health, Link." Mr. Arnold sighed. "You should be saving your strength; trying to argue and yell for ridiculous reasons certainly will do you no good."
"What do you know?!" I hissed, raspiness laced on my breath. Sally lightly, but firmly bonked me on the head. "Hey!"
"He is a doctor." She rolled her eyes.
"I liked that!" Midna spoke up suddenly. "Hit him again, Sally!" She sneered. "You know he deserves it!"
Sally just smiled and shook her head. "You really are surreptitious."
Midna winked. "I wouldn't have it any other way!"
I laughed softly and looked at them with a grin.
We all talked for a little while, and then Midna left for Ordon Village again and left Sally and I at the hospital. Sally got up and yawned, stretching her arms. "I'm going to get some tea and maybe some soup from the kitchen. Would you like some?"
"Sure. That sounds good. Thank you." I replied quietly.
She smiled at me and walked out of the room. I laid my head down for a minute and stared at the ceiling. It's hard to believe we've only known each other for a year now...she makes me feel alive...on a level that no one else has been able to achieve. She makes me so happy; happy that I met her, happy that we've been through everything we've been through, the times we've laughed, and even the times we've cried. I wouldn't trade it for the world...because I got to do it all with her.
She walked back in with a wooden tray which had two cups of tea and two plates perched upon it, along with a forks and knifes placed neatly on folded napkins. "I hope chicken and rice is okay...they didn't have that beef stew you liked last week..."
"That sounds delicious." I grinned as she set the tray down on an end table.
"Good;" She faced me. "Because there's no returns!" She pointed a finger at me in jest. "You'd better like it!"
I decided I'd play the game. "You know what? I've changed my mind, I think I might have to pitch a fit! I wanted my beef stew!" I crossed my arms and huffed.
She giggled. "You should see your expression! You look like a whiny toddler!"
I sighed. "Gotta act like a little kid sometimes, I guess."
"Sometimes?" She raised a brow. "How about all the time? In your case, at least!" She stuck her nose up like she was pretty special for making that comment.
I brushed it off like it was nothing.
"Hey!" She whispered intensely.
"Pffft!" I teased. "That's not as effective as actually yelling, don't you know?"
She put her hands on her hips. "You know I can't yell in a hospital."
"Yes you can." I smiled.
"No, I can't." She argued.
"Can too!"
"Can not!"
"Can too!"
"Can not!"
"Can too!" I chuckled.
"Oh, you think you're pretty funny, huh?" She rolled her eyes.
There was a moment of silence. "CAN TOO!" I shouted, coughing afterwards from straining my voice. A doctor ran in with panic on his face, only to see the two of us facing each other ready for battle. "Is everything...alright?...right...well...that was a total waste of time...please don't shout or yell...unless there's an actual emergency, that is..."
"Sorry sir." Sally answered, turning towards him. "Link here is a little too immature to think about fellow patients who are..." She turned to face me with a glare. "...in need of rest..." She then wore a fake smile, which totally creeped me out, and looking back at the doctor said, "I will make sure he shuts up-uh, I mean, is quiet..."
"Right..." The doctor then walked away.
"LOOK WHAT YOU JUST DID!?" She hissed.
I held up my pointer finger like a child trying to make a point. "Um, I like smiling Sally better than angry Sally, can I have that Sally back please? This alter-ego's creeping me out!"
"A-Alter-ego!? Excuse me?!" She walked closer to me, staring at me with a frown and attempting to be mad at me. I grinned at her and she just got down on her knees by my bedside. "I give up, I can't do it."
"You just can't stay mad at me!" I smirked.
"I guess I can't." She kissed me. "You're too sweet."
I kissed her back. "Dinner and tea's going to get cold if we don't eat."
"That is true." She got up and grabbed the plates as I sat up in bed, handing one of them to me. We were quiet for a while as we ate our food. She was the first to set her plate down, although she hadn't finished her food. I set mine down too, and she then looked at me very earnestly, her eyes getting a little misty. "I can't thank you enough for saving my life, Link...I feel so lucky to have you in my life..." Tears started to come down her cheeks, but they were happy tears.
"I feel very lucky to have you in my life, Sally." I told her, placing her hand in mine.
We talked for a couple more hours and soon it was time for her to leave again for the night. "I..." She stood up. "...I should probably head home."
I grabbed her hand. "I hope for a safe trip home for you."
"Thank you." She smiled kissed me once more on the lips. "Sleep well."
"You too." I said softly. When she was out of the room and out of sight it was as if my heart sank...I instantly felt depressed. I had difficulties falling asleep...staring at the ceiling and out the window, hoping...no, yearning for her to come back. I wished that she could stay overnight because I felt more at ease with her around, but the hospital's visitor policy only allows that for immediate family members and married couples. I fell asleep thinking about her, and I woke up that next morning thinking about her.
Luckily that morning she came to the hospital fairly early. We ate a late breakfast and then I had to take my medication. They gave me an extra dosage of pain meds because I was going to have another physical therapy session...and I was NOT looking forward to it.
"I don' wanna have fisical cerapee taday..." I slurred my words.
She giggled. "I'm sorry, Link...but I really can't take you seriously when you're so overtaken by your medications! You sound so goofy!"
"Stahop it!" I hiccupped and passed out.
She gasped. "Link!" She lightly shook me. "Are you alright?"
I woke with a jolt and saluted her. "Top of the mornin' to ya!" My eyes danced from dizziness, and I felt like I couldn't focus my vision on her. I'm sure I must have looked like an idiot.
"Yeah...I think they gave you too much..." She shook her head.
"Do I still haveta have fisical cerapee?" I asked her.
"Yes." She smiled. "But I will be by your side. Don't worry."
"You sooo guta me!" I grinned. "I wuv you!"
"I wuv you too!" She laughed and kissed me.
A few minutes later Mr. Arnold came into the room. "How are you today, Link?"
"Ah, huh?" I stammered.
"If I may speak, Mr. Arnold..." Sally spoke up. "...I think Link was given too much medication..." She smirked.
"Hey!" I shouted. "Zis is no laffing matta, missy!"
Mr. Arnold and Sally snorted. "I beg to differ!" She said admidst her chortling.
"I think you might be right, Sally." Mr. Arnold replied, looking at me in my dazed and goofy state. He stepped out of the room for a while so I could regain my sanity, and after the effects of the medication wore off he came back. "Alright, Link..." Mr. Arnold spoke seriously. "Are you ready for your next physical therapy session?"
I gulped. "Not really..."
"That's the only way you'll get better." He looked at me quizzically. "You know that, right?"
"Yes, I fully understand that, but it doesn't make it any easier..."
"I will do anything to help you, Link..." Sally smiled at me. "And I'm sure Mr. Arnold would do the same."
Dr. Arnold nodded. "You've got a good support system in this young woman, and if need be I would be more than happy to assist."
I nodded and smiled humbly at them both. "Thank you, both of you."
Oh, yeah...remember when I said I had only one chapter left in my previous entry? I lied. :P More to come soon! Be sure to send me a review! Let me know what you think! Thanks again, everyone! :D
