Chapter 32: Love
I woke up that morning feeling comforted and happy. Never before in my life have I felt a love this strong; a love that isn't one-sided or fabricated, but pure and true. I looked at her face and it was as if all of my heartaches went away. Silly girl, hugging my arm tightly and mumbling, this girl...I never thought someone like her, someone that was meant for me, could ever exist. And here she is, flesh and blood, holding onto my arm tenderly, mumbling in a high-pitched voice...mumbling that it's her teddy bear?! God she's goofy! That's why I love her, more than anything in this world. She is my light, a light I once thought had been dimming.
"No! You can't have my teddy bear!" She shouted in her sleep. "My teddy bear is my fuzzy-wuzzy friend!" She began to talk in a baby voice that wasn't understandable, mumbling who-knows-what, but it sounded so funny that I could barely stifle a chuckle. She continued to hold onto my arm and was apparently having a bad dream, because she started to get angry and scared. "NO! Don't take my teddy bear! You can't!" She squeezed tighter and tighter until the point that I thought the circulation would surely be cut off from my arm. I winced in pain, trying to wake her up by gently shaking her with my other hand. Surely she isn't intending to kill me, right?
"Sally..." I whispered.
"My teddy bear! Don't take it away!" She moaned with irritation.
"Sally...hello?" I shook her. "Anybody home?"
"No! I don't want chocolate! I want my teddy bear!" She began to get louder.
I shook her and spoke louder, while still keeping it quiet enough to be unnoticed by the hospital staff. "Sally! Wake up!"
"Hmmm?" She slowly opened her eyes and looked at me. "W-what happened?" She yawned widely. She looked at my arm in shock when she realized how tight she was squeezing it. "Sorry! Was I dreaming?"
"Yes." I chuckled lightly. "Apparently you thought my arm was your teddy bear and you definitely were not going to let go of it."
"Oh. I don't even remember that." She giggled.
"Figures." I grinned.
"What's that supposed to mean, butthead?!" She glared at me jokingly.
I sighed and looked at the clock. "Never mind that; you'd better get going before the 'police' show up."
"Okay, okay." She got up and stretched, yawning loudly.
"Shhh!" I put my finger to my lips.
She smirked. This could be trouble! "Help!" She spoke in her normal voice, pretending to be in peril. "I have been kidnapped by this handsome lunatic that wants to make me his lover!" She put her hand to her forehead. "Whatever will I do?" I covered her mouth and we both chuckled.
"Get out of here, damsel!" I said in jest.
We kissed and she sat on the window and turned herself around, but before she departed she turned to me. "See you at visiting time."
"See you soon!" I replied. She jumped off the windowsill and was out of sight.
A couple of hours later visitors were permitted into the hospital, and Sally was back in my room. I was so glad to have her back. Silly perhaps, but even a little bit of time away from her feels like forever. She sat down in a nearby chair and I sat on my bed as we both drank coffee and ate breakfast. "Hmmm!" She hummed. "I would kill for a cinnamon roll right now! It sounds so good!"
"Don't look at me, I don't have a cinnamon roll! So HA!" I stuck out my tongue.
"What?" She shrugged. "Guess I'll have to kill you regardless!"
"Violence is not the answer, ma'am." I told her. She walked over to me and held up her fist. I opened my mouth and hesitated. "That's your weapon of choice?"
"Yep!" She giggled and lightly punched my arm with her fist.
"Ow!" I shouted and winked. "It hurts so much!"
"You're such a baby!" She tittered.
"You're a meanie!" I lightly punched her arm.
"Am not!"
"Are too!"
"No!"
"Yes!"
"No!"
"Yes!"
"NO!" She tried to argue more, but I stood up and hugged her tightly, dropping us both onto the bed as she continued to laugh.
"Looks like you two are having too much fun!" A familiar snickering voice echoed.
Sally got off of me and stood up. "You didn't see anything!" She waved her hands side-to-side. She looked directly at the source of the voice as I did...thank the Goddesses it was only Midna!
"No worries." She smiled. "You two are SO CUTE!" She floated over and pinched each of our cheeks.
"Ouch!" Sally rubbed her face. "How are you and Jeremy doing?" She wiggled her eyebrows at Midna.
Jeremy, that's right, he and Midna have been dating for a long time now, at least 2 years. He is another Twili, but he has good morale and treats Midna well. I have never seen her happier.
"We're doing great!" She grinned. "He's the best guy ever!" She twirled around in a circle and stopped when she noticed me glaring at her and cleared her throat. "Not that you aren't a good guy, Link, but Jeremy is definitely a better ladies' man!"
"I beg to differ, Mid-" Sally began.
"Oh, that's your opinion!" She waved her hand in jest. "Jeremy is the best!" She squealed. "And he's all mine!"
"Good." I smiled. "I'm happy for you."
"Care to spill the details?" Sally giggled.
"Okay, I suppose I can share!" She put her finger to her chin. "He and I went out to dinner and it seemed like it was just going to be a regular date, but..." She turned around and fished something out of her pocket, and then revealed her left hand. "HE PROPOSED! AND I SAID YES!"
We all grinned and cheered. "Finally!" I shouted. "It only took him two years!"
"Can I look at it?" Sally asked. Midna nodded and handed it to her. She held it between her fingers and examined it in awe. "It's so beautiful!" She looked at it dreamily, and Midna took the opportunity to get my attention, jerking her head towards Sally and making sure I knew that she liked it.
"Shut it!" I mouthed.
"When's the date?" Sally looked at Midna.
"In two weeks!" She yelled.
"How romantic!" Sally exclaimed. They beamed at one another and basically temporarily forgot I was there.
I coughed. "Ahem. Forgetting someone's here, are we? You can fangirl and be girly when I'm not here, thank you."
"Party-pooper!" Midna stuck out her tongue.
"I agree!" Sally dragged down her bottom eyelid with her finger and stuck out her tongue.
"Don't join in her game, Sally!" I whined.
She giggled. "I'm just trying to keep you in line, making sure you're not getting too 'high and mighty.' Don't you know that 'girls just wanna have fun'?"
I crossed my arms. "Don't pull that card on me, missy!"
She crossed her arms and looked away from me. "Oooo! Link's in twable!" Midna mocked. I glared at her. She gestured towards Sally with a wave of her hands. "Kiss and make up!"
"Oh, I'll do better than that!" I went over to Sally and took the ribbon holding her ponytail out of her hair.
Sally's hands jerked to her head to feel for her hair tie. "Link!" She scrambled, rather ungracefully, to her feet. "That's not fair! Give it back!"
I took the opportunity to tease her and bobbed my hand up and down in the air as she tried to reach her stolen treasure. "Link, you butthead!" Midna yelled. "Give it back to her!"
"Link!" Sally yelled.
"Hmm? Did you say something, Sally?" She walked out of the room. "...I may have taken this too far..." I turned away from the door to face Midna.
"I told you that you should have stopped and given it back to her!" She grunted.
Suddenly Sally hugged me from behind and made me jump, causing me to drop her hair tie. "Yes!" She squealed. She grabbed it from the floor.
"I can't believe I fell for that!" I huffed.
"I'm glad you did!" She pulled all of her hair back except for the few short strands at the front that she always lets loose to frame her face, finishing it off by tying the ribbon tight. "There. All better."
"Nice one, Sally!" Midna winked.
"We have to show these boys who the real boss is!" She giggled.
They both smiled at one another.
One and a half weeks later I was well enough to leave the hospital. I was relieved to be able to go back home and settle back into a normal routine.
Soon it was Midna and Jeremy's wedding day. It was being held in the Twilight Realm. Of course, I wanted to take Sally as my date, but she's never been there...and it is...well...you know, a tad bit strange, to say the least.
Since the days of Twilight Princess and the return of Midna, a new mirror has been created so those of royalty or nobility status, myself included, would be permitted to come and go for trade and negotiations purposes. Taking Sally would technically be bending the rules...but since when do I follow them anyway?
Around 6am I was standing at Sally's doorstep in my formal clothes, which was nobleman's attire complete with black boots, tight tan pants, a light-blue overcoat, and no hat. I absolutely REFUSE to wear a tux; I'm not the guy getting married, as far as I'm concerned I shouldn't have to! As for Midna's previous remarks regarding my relationship with Sally, she can SHUT HER PIE HOLE! Okay...end rant.
I knocked on the door and waited for Sally to answer it. She, however, did not answer it, Curtis did. "Hello, Link." He smiled, gesturing inside. "Please come in." I walked in with him. "Sally's just finishing getting ready. You know, women take forever!"
"Don't remind me!" I laughed.
"Papa, do you know where mother's favorite perfume might be?" Sally shouted from her room.
I reddened. Curtis cleared his throat. "Yes. Unfortunately I'm not sure where it is, sweetheart."
"No worries! I'll look in the attic." She answered, slowly walking in our direction. "Wait! Link's not here, is he?" We both looked in her direction and saw her in her robe. I blushed again.
"He is. Ahem." He cleared his throat again.
"Oh no!" She cried, running in the opposite direction.
"Sorry she's so slow getting ready." He sighed.
"No worries." I replied.
"Found it!" She shouted from in the attic, running back to her room.
"She's pretty excited." He said.
"She seems to be!" I chuckled.
"I don't think she's ever been to such a formal event before. Sure, she's been to weddings before, but they were so much more casual."
"Oh." I said with slight surprise. "I haven't been to very many myself. I prefer more casual over formal."
About 10 minutes later she came out of the hallway in a pink silk and lace dress. I looked at her and also noticed she was wearing make-up, which she almost never does. She looked so beautiful. "I hope this is formal enough; it was my mother's dress."
"It's perfect." I grinned. "You look lovely."
"D'Awww stop it! You're making me blush!" She took a good look at me. "You look very handsome too!" She said while smiling and blushing.
"Ahem!" Curtis cleared his throat. "Have you forgotten I'm here?"
"Oh! Sorry Papa!" Sally said with worry.
"No problem." He chortled. "You two lovebirds had better get going!"
"Hey!" I laughed, taking Sally's hand.
