Chapter 33: Getting Sentimental
That afternoon we attended Midna and Jeremy's wedding in the Twilight Realm. Midna wore a black floor-length dress with ruffles. She later explained to us that it was customary for Twili weddings. The ceremony was wonderful, and afterwards we all ate dinner and everyone danced in the throne room where I once dealt with Zant. It was more lighted for this ceremony for the sake of the Light Realm-dwelling guests. I was sitting down because I didn't really want to dance. Ever since I became the Hero I have gone to many royal events, so I have had to dance, but even after getting lessons from an expert, I still am terrible at it!
Sally looked at me from across the table as I fidgeted with my fingers. "Don't you want to dance, Link?"
"I can't." I replied. "I'm a klutz!"
"That's okay." She got in my face and grinned. "I am too!"
"But...but...you sing...you're gifted with that stuff!" I protested.
"I can sing, but that doesn't mean I can dance!" She grabbed my hand. "C'mon! We'll be fools together!"
I beamed at her and stood up. "Okay!"
We started to dance very clumsily together until all the attention was on us due to the absurdity of it. "Why don't you two stop making fools of yourselves!?" A nobleman shouted as we almost slammed into him and his partner.
"Butt-out!" Sally shouted over my shoulder. "Don't you know we're creating the newest dance-craze?"
"Sally...um...what are you talking about?" I looked at her with confusion.
"Play along!" She whispered.
"Um, yeah!" I said waveringly. "W-what she said!"
Sally glared at me, then smiled and sighed. "Oh well..."
I then twirled Sally around and we collided with another nobleman and his partner. All four of us fell to the ground.
"Goodness I'm sorry!" Sally said apologetically, helping the woman up.
"Sorry, folks." I apologized, helping the nobleman up.
"ARRRGGGGHHH!" The nobleman shouted, pointing his finger angrily at Sally. "DO YOU KNOW HOW EXPENSIVE THIS JACKET WAS?!" He pointed at his fancy black vest with gold satin trim. "WHAT'S A COMMONER DOING AT A ROYAL WEDDING ANYHOW!? YOU'LL PAY FOR THIS, WENCH! " He shoved her, and that was it.
I grabbed him by the collar and held my fist to his face. "How DARE you?!" Everyone gasped.
I got ready to punch him when Sally put her hands on my shoulder. "Link, please..."
Midna put her hands on Sally's shoulder. "Let him."
"But-but it's your reception, Midna!" Sally argued.
"That nobleman needs to learn how to treat a lady with respect!" She glared at the nobleman, who began to quiver. She walked over and got in his face. "Link is right; how DARE you?! You don't touch a lady like that!" His shaking became more intense. She turned to us and winked. "Having that said though, Link, this guy isn't worth your time." She looked at the nobleman again and pointed at the main doors. "GET OUT OF MY CASTLE!"
Everyone cheered as the nobleman was ushered out of the castle by Midna's guards.
I turned back to Sally. "Are you alright?"
"Yes, no need to worry about me." She smiled and kissed me lightly on the lips. "Thanks for defending me."
"Anytime." I grinned.
"D'awwww!" Midna sighed. She turned to Jeremy and they smiled and kissed.
The rest of the wedding was fun, but fairly uneventful. It was great to see Midna and Jeremy so happy together...and I couldn't help but think about Sally and me. I'd like that to be us someday... I want to ask her...I'm just scared...I want to wait for when the time is right.
When the night was over we went back to the Light Realm; back home. As we quietly got up to her door I gave her a gentle kiss goodnight, but as I was about to draw my lips away, she pressed her lips to mine and wrapped her arms around me. I wrapped my arms around her and kissed her passionately, running my fingers through her hair. After two minutes we kissed on the lips one more time. She giggled as I kissed her nose and we let go of each other's hands as she went to her front door and opened it, looking at me again and blowing me a kiss. I did the same and waved good-bye for the night.
Curtis' POV
I woke up this morning around 6am and made coffee and tea. While I waited for both to cool enough to drink I bathed and got dressed. I went to the coffee pot and poured a cup. The cup I used was flawed for sure, a little rough around the edges, a little sloppily painted in light blue with the word "Daddy" in black laquer paint. The handle was lumpy at the top, and it was a little chipped from years of use, but it was still my favorite cup; for the little hands that made it for me so many years ago in grade school worked hard for a gift worthy of her "daddy." I always prefer my coffee rich and black with a single lump of sugar. I sat at the table and began to sip from it when Sally opened the bathroom door and came out. She was already bathed and dressed and ready for the day. I couldn't help but laugh beside myself. "You are definitely a morning person!"
"I guess I qualify as the quintessential 'daddy's little girl,' then!" She giggled.
"Ha! 'Apple doesn't fall far from the tree!'" I chortled. She held up her hands and did a silly little waltz with herself to the counter and poured herself a cup of coffee with milk and sugar. "How was your date with Link at Midna's wedding?"
She reddened and smiled big. "It was wonderful." She sat next to me at the table with her cup. "I learned that Link and I are both terrible dancers..." We both laughed. "...But we made the best of it and had a really good time."
"Better to have fun messing up together!" I said with a grin. "When your mother and I got married, the ring bearer tripped on his shoelace and fell. He was getting so much attention from the adults making sure he was okay that the little girl pretended to trip too! She finally helped him up and they hugged each other."
"How cute!" She laughed.
"Even better, when your mother was pregnant with you, she cried over nearly everything!" He chuckled. "When trying to think of your name, and of course we didn't know if you were a boy or girl, we couldn't agree on one. She was bawling and shouted, 'I want his name to be Johnathan!' I felt bad and wanted to cheer her up, so I playfully 'cried' to her 'then I guess we'll have to name him Johnathan!'"
Sally snickered. "You pretended to cry?"
"It worked!" I shrugged with a smile. "She stopped crying and laughed at me." We both giggled.
She stopped laughing and beamed with her mouth closed, a sweet demeanor on her face. "Deep in my heart I just know that Link and I will be like that...I mean, we kind of already are."
I looked at her earnestly. "I'm confident that you two will be that way too. It makes me so happy seeing you two together." I placed my hand on her shoulder. "You are truly made for each other." I then hung my head in shame at what I had done to keep them apart. "Goddesses, why was I such a fool? I wrongfully tore you two apart. I really do regret-"
"It's okay Papa." She put her hand on my shoulder and then hugged me. "You were trying to protect your daughter. You didn't know that woman was manipulating you."
"Thank you for helping me see the truth." I patted her on the back.
"Thank you for leading by example and being a stellar Papa!" She kissed me on the cheek.
I smiled thankfully. "What time is Link coming over today?"
"Around 11. He and I are going to make lunch." She replied. "How does chicken and rice sound?"
"Delicious." I said.
"Good!" She nodded. "Link told me yesterday that Fado recently butchered one of his chickens and offered it to him so he could have a fresh one, so he's bringing it today."
Link's POV
A few hours passed and it was finally time to head over to Sally and Curtis' house and spend the afternoon with them. Ever since I survived the ordeal with Sally's Stepmother, Eleanor, and Vlad and Curtis divorced Sally's Stepmother, the three of us have spent more time together and have grown closer. I really enjoy the relationship we all have with each other. Today was no different; I was excited to go over and spend time with them both.
I knocked on the door and Curtis opened it. I held up the sack with the chicken in it in front of the two of us and made a little joke. "Bawk bawk bawk bawk!"
Curtis laughed and mimicked me. "Bawk bawk bawk bawk!"
I pretended to have a conversation with him in the ancient language of "chicken." I snickered. "Bawk bawk bawkety bawk bawk?"
He replied with. "Bawk bawk!"
We were roaring with laughter at this point. "BAWK!" I shouted.
"BAWK BAWK!" He shouted in return.
Sally came up and giggled, rolling her eyes. "Bawk bawk!" All three of us laughed loudly.
We prepared the chicken and put it in the oven to cook and made the rice dish.
We sat down together and ate and chatted. I looked at Curtis. "I would really enjoy taking some time to go fishing with you Curtis. Would you like to go with me?"
"Sure!" He grinned. "If your girlfriend doesn't mind me stealing her man for a while!" He winked.
Sally giggled. "I don't mind. You two should spend some time together! I'll go to Castle Town with Ilia or something."
I looked at Curtis. "How does tomorrow morning sound?"
"Fantastic!" He said whole-heartedly, bringing up a fist. "We'll catch a big one, I'm sure!"
He and I linked hands as if we were going to arm-wrestle. "Wanna make that a bet?" I teased.
"Sure! Let's make it a bet!" He smiled cockily.
"Oh, it's on!" I shouted, letting go of his hand and lightly slapping the table with both of my hands. Curtis stood up and gave me a noogie. "Hey! Ow ow!"
Sally laughed. "You two are having too much fun; and to think you're not even at Hena's Fishing Hole yet! Hm! I wonder what trouble you'll cause there?" She winked. We had a wonderful day together.
The next morning I got up and got ready and met Curtis at his house around 5am. When I arrived Sally had just gotten up and walked lazily into the living room in her nightgown, yawning loudly. She placed her hand in front of her mouth mid-yawn. "Sorry. That was noisy."
I walked over to her and kissed her on the lips. "Sleepy this morning?"
She rubbed her eyes. "Yep. You could tell by the eye boogers huh?"
I laughed and looked at her dumbfoundedly. "Eye boogers?"
"The little things in the corners of your eyes when you wake up, silly!" She pointed to her eyes like a child. "I call them eye-boogers!"
"Oh!" I smiled. "I call them crusties."
"What about when they aren't crusty?" She queried.
"They're still crusties to me."
"You don't know what you're talking about, hero! I am right!" She crossed her arms and looked away from me in jest.
I hugged her from behind and picked her up. "Really now?!"
She chuckled loudly with delight as I set her back down. Curtis came into the room. "No making out in my household, you hear me?!"
I let go of her and froze. "Curtis...I'm so sorry...I-"
"HAHAHAHA!" He bursted out laughing. "You should have seen the look on your face!"
"Papa!" Sally cried. "You scared me for a second! If you scared me, imagine how you made Link feel!" She sighed. "You're such a child sometimes..."
He hugged her. "Yep! And proud to be!" He then hugged us both. "You know I think you two are perfect together!"
"True..." She smiled.
"Guess you haven't really changed a bit since our mission with Rusl! You're still such a goofball!" I laughed. "You did have me nervous for a second, though!" I turned to Sally. "Did Ilia tell you that she was available to spend time with you today when you asked her yesterday?"
"She did. We are meeting up in two hours to go shopping at Hyrule Castle Town."
"Awesome!" I kissed her on the head and then Curtis gave her a hug. "We're off then!"
"Yes!" Curtis added. "We'll be catching the fish of the century!"
"Okay!" She shouted as we left the house. "Good luck!"
