Dragon Tongue
Viking Tongue
Growing Up Within the Nest
Forge was silent as he sat just outside the entrance of the cave that had been his home for as long as he could remember. He glanced over his shoulder when he heard the familiar purr of the dragon that he considered his best friend and brother. He smiled as the black dragon laid down beside him, resting his head against his lap. Forge carefully ran his fingers along the scales on the back of his neck before he turned his attention back to the clear blue sky.
"Do you ever wonder just what is out there, bud? The alpha has always kept us hidden away but I want to explore." Forge sighed, leaning back, supporting his weight on his arms. He closed his eyes as he felt the sunlight on his face, allowing his mind to wonder about the great unknown. Toothless suddenly growled, standing on his paws to allow Forge to climb to his feet. The young man glanced around, searching the skies for whatever had the Nightfury on edge. He could just barely make out a black speck in the distance, causing him to quickly run back into the cave, allowing a whistle to echo throughout the ice caverns. The young Viking ducked around several ice spears before he made it into the clearing where the Great Alpha resided. He dropped into a bow, resting his fist over his heart, glancing up when he felt the familiar cool breath on the back of his neck.
"There is an unknown dragon headed this way. Toothless did not seem to recognize his scent but he was still to far in the distance for me to properly make out anything more than the fact that it was a Nadder." Forge explained, his voice easily slipping into the familiar dragon tongue.
"The dragon is a friend unless it proves to be otherwise. This is a sanctuary, and it will be allowed entry provided is does not seem hostile to the others." The Alpha growled, his ice blue eyes seeming to pierce through the young man. Forge simply nodded before he made his way back to the cave entrance where Toothless was still waiting. The nightfury simply glanced over his shoulder before he turned his attention back to the dragon that was getting closer.
"The Alpha says that this Nadder is allowed within the island unless he is hostile upon arrive." Forge explained. He stepped forward when the blue Nadder landed, stumbling slightly when it's leg properly touch the ground enough to support some of its weight. Forge couldn't help but frown when he noticed the anger red marks on its leg, guessing it had been chained up for quite some time. He slowly stepped forward, holding up his hands in an attempt to show that he meant the terrified dragon no harm. The Nadder simply growled, its eyes narrowing as Forge stepped closer. Toothless released a warning growl before he sat back to allow Forge to further inspect the injured dragon.
"Can you stand?" he questioned, ignoring the surprised expression the dragon gave him. He glanced at it, waiting for a response or for it to simply stand on its own.
"You speak dragon tongue? But you look like those horrible Vikings." The dragon stated, revealing it to be a female. Forge only sighed, shaking his head as he heard the already familiar comment. He had grown up hidden in the dragon king's nest and had helped in rescuing many dragons though some refused to trust him simply because he looked like the very being that had harmed them.
"I am a friend, and I would like to help if you would permit me to." He explained, kneeling down in an attempt to get a closer look at the enflamed cuts on her legs. She shifted slightly; her wings pressed closer to her body. Forge glanced at Toothless, hoping the Night Fury would say something to ease the dragoness' worries. The Night Fury only stood up and walked back into the cave though Forge assumed to was just to get another dragon that would be able to help them.
"Who did this to you?" Forge questioned as he pulled moss from the pouch tied to his waist. He held it close to allow her to smell it before he pressed it against her leg, hoping the cool water would relieve some of the sting that was clearly bothering her.
"A Viking tribe just a day flight from here. They captured us during a raid and used us to train their young ones." She finally explained. Forge glanced at her for a moment before he turned his attention back to what he was currently doing.
"Were there anymore dragons on this island?" He questioned.
"Yes, several. A Nightmare, a Gronkle, a Zippleback and a Terror. I heard several of them talking about killing the Nightmare and how much of an honor it would be." She quickly explained, the terror she felt bleeding into her voice. Forge glanced up when Toothless walked back outside with another Nadder that went back the name of Blazer because of his red and orange scales. The Night Fury had already heard what she'd said and could guess just what Forge was thinking.
"Let us go talk to the Great Alpha. Perhaps he would allow us to fly out and access what the problem is." Toothless stated.
"Absolutely not. It is too dangerous for two hatchlings like you." The Alpha growled.
"With all do respect my king we are both nearly adults, yet we are the only ones that have not been sent out on any missions." Forge objected. He glanced at Toothless when he felt his tail connect with the back of his head, giving him an annoyed glare. Toothless quickly shook his head causing Forge to roll his eyes in annoyance.
"Very well. You may go but understand this. Neither of you are to get anywhere near the Vikings." The alpha finally agreed. Both man and dragon nodded their heads before the exited the main cave where the alpha resided. Forge walked next to his brother, a frown marring his face as they walked through the tunnel systems, lost deep in thought. Toothless released a small growl in an attempt to gain his attention, knowing that his brother had never seen anyone that looked like them that hadn't attempted to kill him for being a demon aside from one village far outside their own territory.
"You know I will always have your back. You're my nest mate, my brother." The young nightfury growled. Forge glanced at him before he nodded, a small smirk appearing on his face as they walked into one of the few stone caves on the island since the Great Alpha had simply used his ice breath to enlarge and create them a safer home. The cave was lit with a fire that Forge used to both keep himself warm as well as work with. He had taught himself to make weapons and clothes since he didn't have firepower nor sharp claws or teeth to protect himself. Since the Great Alpha never let him out of the nest he hadn't had the option to learn from an actual master, instead learning and teaching himself through mistakes and errors.
"Don't forget this." Toothless warbled as he walked over to where his brother was bent over a leather pouch that one of the small Terrors had brought him back on the Alpha's orders. Forge glanced up and saw the nightfury was carrying one of his weapons that attached to the harness strapped around his leg. He held out his hand, laughing when his brother dropped it into his hand with dragon drool on it.
"You had it. That's why I haven't been able to find it for training." Forge laughed, shaking his head at his best friend's antics. He pulled the leather pack on his back, buckling the leather strap across his chest. As they walked out of the safety of their home Forge couldn't help but wonder just what was beyond the sanctuary. He had heard many stories of Viking tribes killing dragons like it was a type of sport, murdering their own in wars just for more land. He had often wondered about what his life would have been like if Cloudjumper hadn't taken him from his cradle when he was just a baby. It was common knowledge from many of the elder dragons that he wasn't as stocky as most of the Vikings, having a smaller, slim figure that would often be considered too dainty even compared to a woman.
"Ready for the flight?" Toothless questioned as he raised his wings once Forge had situated himself on his back properly. Neither dragon nor male spoke as they soared through the sky, the sun setting behind them after several hours of flying. Forge sighed after a while before he leaned back on, lying across Toothless' back with his arms under his head. He loved watching the stars in the night sky, wondering what the Vikings holding his kind hostage would be like.
"Forge there is something up ahead." Toothless growled. Forge quickly sat up, pulling his hood up as they began to fly into the center of what look like a dragon raid. He frowned as he pressed his body closer to his brother, watching as several different kinds of dragon soared around them, clearly paying either of them no mind. Toothless released a warning growl when one of the Nadders flew too close to his side, their wings brushing for a brief moment. Forge glanced around in confusion at all the dragons. Their alpha had always told them that Vikings were dangerous and would injure or even kill on sight. He couldn't understand why all these dragons were clearly raiding a village full of them.
"Forge something is going on that our Alpha would not approve of." Toothless growled.
"We don't serve an Alpha young one. We answer to our queen, the Red Death." The right head of a Zippleback stated.
"We have not seen a Bewilderbeast, a king of dragons, in many centuries." The left head explained. Toothless and Forge shared a look as they continued on their path towards the Viking village. Toothless flew high over the towers that were stationed around the island, watching as the others flew closer towards land. Forge couldn't help but frown as he watched the Vikings fight the dragons, feeling his heart constrict with each dragon trapped and slaughter. He tightened the grip he had on the harness Toothless wore to keep him on his back.
"Toothless what are they doing? They're killing them without any remorse!"Forge whispered; horror evident in his voice. Toothless allowed one of his plasma blasts to fill his throat, releasing it aimed at one of the Viking watch towers. He angled his body, circling the village. Forge gritted his teeth as he watched a large Viking with a red beard towered over a downed Nightmare, his axe raised over his head.
"Forge don't even think about it! Our Alpha told us to stay away from the Vikings!" Toothlessroaredin warning. Forge reached down to detach the retractable blade from his leg, his anger growing at the treatment these dragons were going through. Toothless angled himself to get a small distance closer to the cliff range that overlooked the village.
"I can't just do nothing Toothless!" Forge complained. Neither dragon nor man saw the net flying towards them until it had wrapped itself tightly around Toothless' body. The sudden jolt from the net connecting sent Forge flying from his back towards the ground.
"Forge!" Toothless yelled as he fell towards the ground over the forest, his green eyes wide as he watched his brother fall. Forge hit the rocky cliffs hard, his head connecting with the rocks hard enough to knock him unconscious.
Yelling was the only thing he could hear as he laid on his stomach, his vision blurry as he regained conscious. He released a pained groan as he struggled to push himself to his knees. His stomach churned in protest, threatening to make him throw up the breakfast he'd had before their flight from the Alpha's island. His body stiffened when he felt a hand on his back, the woman sitting in front of him attempting to gain his attention. He managed to raise his head enough to see the multiple Vikings surrounding him, many of them holding their weapons as if waiting to attack him. A small old woman hobbled towards him holding a wooden staff, getting up in his face. He barely managed a small growl before he clasped back to the ground, once again passing out.
