Chapter 18: A Visit from Old Friends.

Sunstreaker sat down bored in his chambers as he waited for the connection on his personal computer to go through. At last, a face appeared on the viewscreen he'd been hoping to see for a while.

"Hey bro, how's it going?" Sideswipe asked.

"A hot mess," Sunstreaker admitted as he leaned back in his chair, put his hands behind his head, and kicked his feet up.

"Ah, come on," Sideswipe insisted. "You're the lucky one; you get to visit a whole new world."

"A whole new world full of organic sludge…." Sunstreaker muttered. "We've been here for at least two deca cycles, and we haven't made any serious progress in finding the Allspark."

"Is it really that bad?" Sideswipe asked. "The planet, I mean."

Sunstreaker was quiet for a bit. "I wish you were here, Sideswipe. You're better at this stuff than me…"

"Maybe you could talk to Optimus about it?" Sideswipe suggested, "It'd be nice to work together again."

Sunstreaker put his fingers to his chin thoughtfully. "Yeah, I'll think—" all of a sudden there was a massive boom as the Ark-27 shook. The shaking was so intense it knocked Sunstreaker out of his chair, landing on the ground with a thud.

"What was that!?" Sideswipe asked.

"No idea," Sunstreaker said, getting up. "Sorry, Sideswipe, I'm going to have to call you back."

"You got it," Sideswipe said.

With that, Sunstreaker raced off into the hallway; when he got there, he found Brawn also running down it.

"Any idea what's going on!?" Sunstreaker asked.

"Yeah!" Brawn shouted, "We got-" Just then a laser shot blasted Brawn in his shoulder; he grunted as the blast knocked him back into the nearby wall.

Sunstreaker looked to where the shot came from and saw Barricade and Quake standing in the hallway, the latter holding a laser rifle that was smoking.

"Say no more, buddy!" Sunstreaker shouted as he pulled out his laser pistol and started firing at the two. Barricade quickly pulled out his duel pistols and returned fire.

Brawn grunted as he picked himself back up and faced Quake.

"Gonna take more than that to beat me!" Brawn boasted as he slammed his fists together.

"Lucky for me, I've got even more power than that." Quake boasted back. He threw his rifle to the side and charged at Brawn, grabbing him and then slamming him into the side of the ship.

As Sunstreaker continued to fire at Barricade, he turned on his wrist comm. "Optimus! This is Sunstreaker! We got Decepticons in the Ark-27!"

Over the comm, Sunstreaker heard Optimus grunt. "Yes, Sunstreaker, we GRRRR noticed!"

"Optimus!? Are you okay!?" Sunstreaker asked.

"Hard to say," Optimus grunted in pain.

A few minutes earlier

Optimus stood with Ratchet in the control bay of the Ark-27 as they did some routine maintenance on the ship. There was an awkward silence between the two old friends as they worked.

Optimus finally spoke up. "Is he secure in the secret room?" he asked.

"Secure as can be," Ratchet answered.

"Any progress?"

"None," Ratchet said mournfully.

I'm not judging you for not giving up Ratchet," Optimus replied.

"Yeah," Ratchet said, hanging his head low. "Because isn't that what we do? Never give up?"

Optimus nodded. "That's exactly what we-"

All of a sudden the communication system sprung to life: "Ratchet, this is Prowl; we need—" then they heard Hot Rod's confident boasting followed by a crunch.

Ratchet picked up the comm unit right away. "Prowl!? Is that you? What happened!?"

"We're fighting one of the kid's monsters, called a Hydra." Prowl responded, "It's kicking our tailpipes, and Hot Rod's badly injured. Ratchet, we need evac, NOW!"

"Just once, I'd like one mission with no fuss," muttered Ratchet as he raced to the ground bridge controls with Optimus. He didn't waste any time and activated the ground bridge the second he was there.

"It's open! Get back here, Prowl!" Ratchet ordered.

"We're in," Prowl answered after a moment. "But Thalia's hurt too now. We'll need-"

Just then there was a boom that knocked Ratchet and Optimus off their feet, followed by a sputtering sound, the ground bridge turned off, and the portal disappeared.

"What the hell!?" Ratchet asked. "Prowl, are you there? Prowl!?"

"What happened?" Optimus asked.

"Someone shut off the power to the ground bridge and the comm system!" Ratchet replied. "Prowl and the other should be okay; just teleported to a random location."

"That's good, but how did the power shut off?" Optimus asked.

As if on cue, one of the walls in the ground bridge room exploded. Optimus turned and saw a familiar face in the resulting gap in the Ark-27's hull.

"A good question, Optimus Prime," Megatron said mockingly as Starscream and Soundwave stood beside him. "Here's your answer!" He shouted as he raised his fusion cannon and fired.

"Get down!" Optimus ordered. He lunged toward Ratchet and pushed him to the ground; Megatron's shot narrowly flew above their heads.

"Ratchet," Optimus said. "I know fighting isn't your thing-"

"Optimus, you know me," Ratchet said as he got up. "Just because I choose to avoid fighting." out of his arms, twin knife blades extended, replacing his hands. "Doesn't mean I don't know how."

"Always good to hear, old friend," Optimus said as he got up in turn and retracted his right hand to form a glowing orange axe.

"Rip them apart!" ordered Megatron, and he, Starscream, and Soundwave charged in.

Starscream tackled Ratchet and pinned him against the wall.

"Payback for the forest, you outdated piece of scrap!" Starscream threatened. He raised his fist and punched Ratchet across the face.

"What? Too embarrassed you got your tailpipe beat by a measly medic?" Ratchet mocked as he stabbed Starscream in the gut.

"GAH!" Starscream grunted as he staggered back. Wordlessly, he raised his arm and started slamming his fist into Ratchet. Ratchet effortlessly sidestepped Starscream attacks before leg-sweeping Starscream onto the floor.

"Where did you learn moves like that?" Starscream asked.

"Dancing." Ratchet laughed.

"Oh yeah? Here's what I learned with my fellow seekers!" Starscream shouted. He raised his leg to Ratchet's face, where the jet thrusters were for his vehicle mode. The thrusters ignited right in Ratchet's face. Ratchet hollered in pain right before Starscream got up and grabbed him, extending his own sword arm.

"The benefits of having a powerful vehicle mode," boasted Starscream as he grabbed Ratchet by the neck. With a swift motion, he tossed Ratchet onto a table, obliterating it and leaving Ratchet amidst a pile of debris on the floor.

"What can you do? Flash your lights at me?" Starscream derided. Then he slammed his foot into Ratchet's face and put his sword to the medic's neck.

"Pathetic." Starscream dismissed.

Meanwhile, Optimus was fighting in close corridors with Soundwave and Megatron. He swung his axe at the two and swung his sword the other way.

"Come up with new tricks, would you?" mocked Megatron as he grabbed Optimus by the wirst and hurled him through a wall.

"Soundwave. Find the data the Autobots have on the Allspark symbols." Megatron ordered.

"Yes, lord Megatron." Soundwave responded before running off. Megatron then turned his attention back to Optimus, who was picking himself off the ground.

"So it's just you and me then," Optimus groaned as he tried to pick himself up.

"As it always should be." Megatron mocked as he turned his right hand into a glowing pink mace.

"Then let it continue," Optimus fired back, standing up before swinging again. He and Megatron's weapons clashed. The Decepticon leader used his free arm to smack Optimus across the face, but Optimus used the momentum of the blow to turn around and deck Megatron, knocking him back.

Megatron grunted as he felt Optimus's steel fist dig into his face.

"I'm giving you a chance, Prime." Megatron announced. "It doesn't have to be this way."

"Oh really?" Optimus asked with suspicion.

"I mean it, give me the data you have willingly, and we can recover the Allspark together and save Cybertron." Megatron offered, extending his hand toward Optimus. "After all, isn't that what we both want?". As he spoke, Megatron gave a wicked smile.

Optimus glared. "Do you really think I'm that stupid?" he asked.

"No. Just naively optimistic," scoffed Megatron. And then he swung his mace at Optimus again, striking the Autobot leader and leaving scuff marks on his chest. Megatron raised his mace to hit Optimus again.

"I am optimistic, Megatron," Optimus declared as he grabbed Megatron's mace in mid-air with his left hand. "But I am anything but naive." He then swiftly headbutted Megatron and forcefully pushed him through another wall, causing the two fighters to end up in the bridge room of the Ark-27.

Megatron growled and wordlessly leaped up and grabbed Optimus in a stranglehold.

Optimus struggled to get out when his wrist comm started beeping. Out of it came Sunstreaker's voice. "Optimus! This is Sunstreaker! We got Decepticons in the base!"

Optimus couldn't help but let out a frustrated sigh. "Yes, Sunstreaker, we GRRRR noticed!" he grunted as Megatron squeezed tighter.

"Optimus?! Are you okay?" Sunstreaker asked.

"Hard to say!" Optimus grunted again. He then forced himself to get a second wind, flipped Megatron off of him, and slammed him into the floor of the ship's bridge.

"I'll come back to you with an update in a bit," Optimus said before bringing his hands together and slamming them on top of Megatron.

Megatron growled; he lept up and knocked Optimus off of him.

"Here's your update!" Megatron shouted. He started to transform into the alternate mode of an Abrams tank, then he aimed the turret at Optimus.

"Scrap," muttered Optimus right before Megatron fired a shot that sent Optimus flying through several walls.

As Chromia landed a punch on Skywarp, she was left wondering what the heck had just happened.

A few minutes ago she had just been in the Ark-27's firing range to keep her aiming skills sharp, then Skywarp and Thundercracker had teleported in out of nowhere. Now she was fighting against the two, trying to get the upper hand after they took her by surprise.

After punching Skywarp back, Chromia quickly backhanded Thundercracker, who was coming at her from behind. With both cons dazed for a moment, she turned on her comm. "Anyone there? She asked. "I got-"

"Decepticons we know!" Brawn said. Chromia heard a clang and a cry of pain that sounded suspiciously like Quake. "You need backup?" Brawn asked.

"Nah," Chromia replied. Skywarp got up and fired at her, but she jumped up and transformed into her motorcycle mode. "I'll let you know if I do." She revved her engine and drove forward, leaping into the air, her back wheel hitting Skywarp right in the face.

"Gah!" he muttered. Chromia landed on the ground and raced off into the halls of the Ark-27.

"After her!" Thundercracker ordered.

"GRRRR. I hate fighting in enclosed spaces…" Skywarp muttered as the two cons raced after Chromia.

"I know, but we've gotta find that Allspark data." Thundercracker pointed out. "I'll go find it; you go after Chromia," he suggested.

"On it," Skywarp said, He concentrated and, with a VOP, teleported away, leaving Thundercracker to look around the ship by himself.

Skytread was the only Decepticon not engaged in combat at the moment, instead wandering the halls.

As he heard the sounds of Quake and Brawn fighting and other sounds of combat being made somewhere in the distance, he sighed. "Everyone gets to have fun but me," he muttered.

As he searched the ship, he saw an open door and looked in. Inside the room was a small monitor with various cables attached to it, a few backpacks, various small furniture, as well as other miniature commodities, but no one was inside.

Skytread let out a wicked smile. "This…this must be where those bugs the Autobots befriend live…"

He walked inside the room. "I'm gonna enjoy wrecking this stuff."

"Not a chance, pal!" yelled a voice as Sunstreaker grabbed Skytread from behind and put his arms around his waist.

Skytread growled before Sunstreaker threw him backward away from the room. The Autobot then closed the door behind him.

"Autobot killjoy!" Skytread muttered, and he swung his fist at Sunstreaker, but the Autobot caught Skytread's fist in his hand.

"Hah. That's what my brother tells me," laughed Sunstreaker.

Thundercracker had finally found Ratchet's lab and was busy trying to get the computer to turn on.

"Come on, come on!" Thundercracker muttered.

"Having trouble, Thundercracker?" asked Soundwave as he and Starscream walked into the room, the latter dragging Ratchet by the neck.

"I am," Thundercracker reported, sounding frustrated. "It looks like the doc modified the computer so that only he could access it. Can you bypass it, Soundwave?"

"I probably could, but knowing the individual known as Ratchet, it could take longer than would be desirable." Soundwave elaborated.

"As I suspected," Starscream muttered smugly. He then tossed Ratchet forward as he landed in front of the three cons. Starscream pointed his wrist gun at the medic's head. "Access the computer for us," he ordered.

Ratchet shot a look of disgust and anger at the three cons. "Go to the pit."

"Looks like we need some leverage," Thundercracker suggested. "See anything in the room, guys?"

Starscream turned his head back and forth as he inspected the room, making sure to keep his gun at the medic's face. "I don't see anything," he said.

"I, however, detect something with my sensors," Soundwave said. "A hidden compartment."

Ratchet's optics widened. Starscream smirked.

"Ah, I think we found our leverage," he said sadistically.

"Soundwave, get the compartment open," he ordered.

Soundwave nodded and walked over to one of the walls in the lab; he pressed his hand against it and then ripped the wall down. Inside the chamber was a giant teal, white, and red Autobot on a recharge slab; his eyes were powered down and his colors were dimmed.

"NO!" cried Ratchet. He tried to get up, but Starscream slammed his foot onto the Autobots back.

Thundercracker took a step back, his expression one of horror. "No way... HIM!?" he asked shakily. "They brought Quickswitch with them!?"

Starscream laughed, "Of course they did. Why give up a powerful asset? You know how the Autobots will never give up on the most futile causes."

Ratchet grunted in both physical and emotional pain. "I just… I'm trying to save… a friend.".

"And you think the Allspark can do that, don't you?" asked Starscream mockingly.

Ratchet was quiet.

"Well, Ratchet, I suppose you know how this goes." Starscream turned to Soundwave and made a gesture. On cue, Soundwave pulled out his rifle and pointed it at Quickswitch's head.

"Give us your data, or we kill Quickswitch." Starscream threatened.

Ratchet froze.

"Do it Autobot," Thundercracker ordered.

Ratchet put his head down. "...I'm sorry, Optimus," he muttered. He looked up at Starscream. "You win," he said.

"Good," Starscream said. He put his foot off Ratchet, allowing him to stand. Ratchet walked over to his computer and went through the necessary complicated process to sign in.

Soundwave used his free arm to press the button on his shoulder. "Frenzy, eject, operation. Retrieval."

A small Red and Black robot popped out of Soundwave's chest compartment and then ran over to Ratchet's computer. Turning his hand into an interface plug, Frenzy jammed it into the computer and started downloading the Autobot's data on the Allspark.

Ratchet scowled. "I did what you asked. Now let him go!" he ordered.

Starscream shrugged. "Hmmm, see, I would normally, but... it's more useful to kill him while he's helpless."

Ratchet scowled even harder and ran at Soundwave. "You spawn of a-"

Starscream fired his wrist blaster and shot Ratchet in the back, leaving a gaping hole in the medic's backside. Smoke poured out of the hole, and Ratchet fell forward on his front, giving the three Decepticons a good look at the exposed wires and circuits.

"Do it, Soundwave." Ordered Starscream.

"Starscream wait!" Thundercracker protested. "This doesn't feel right… He cooperated, and Quickswitch is-"

"Helpless? Unable to fight?" Starscream asked. "That's the point. This is our chance to get rid of one of the greatest threats the Autobots have ever thrown at us. And we don't even have to break an energon sweat."

Thundercracker was quiet.

"You know I'm right, Thundercracker. After all, you were at ground zero when Quickswitch was first unleashed on us, weren't you?"

Thundercracker sighed. "Do it," he said.

Soundwave charged his gun, Starscream looked gleeful, Thundercracker looked away…

"No…please…" begged Ratchet on the floor.

"Special delivery!" yelled a voice.

Before anyone could react, Quake came flying into the room, knocking into both Starscream and Soundwave, knocking the two to the ground.

"Order again now and I'll throw in a free knuckle sandwich!" Brawn boasted.

On the floor, Starscream growled as he tried to get the heavy Quake off of him.

"Thundercracker, get him!" he ordered

Thundercracker nodded and aimed his wrist guns at Brawn, but before he could fire, Brawn fired first with his pistol and shot Thundercracker in the shoulder.

"GAH!" Thundercracker moaned in pain.

Brawn rushed over to Ratchet and helped him get back up on his feet. "Come on, Doc, just a bit more, and we can drive off these Decepticons!"

Ratchet huffed and gave a rueful smile. "Might over microchips, right?"

"You know it!" Brawn laughed.

"Soundwave! I finished downloading the data!" shouted Frenzy.

Soundwave, finally succeeding in pushing the unconscious Quake off of him and Starscream, turned to his minion. "Then let us exterminate these Autobots."

Starscream and Thundercracker raised his wrist blaster, and Soundwave and Frenzy raised their guns, and the three started shooting.

"We gotta get rid of these guys right now!" Brawn stated as he returned fire.

"I got an idea!" Ratchet said as he pulled out his pistol and joined Brawn in the shootout, "But I can't work on it right now! I can't just leave you or Quickswitch!"

Ratchet turned on his wrist comm. "Optimus, are you there?"

Optimus staggered backward as he took another hit from Megatron. The Decepticon leader smiled cruelly and charged in for another hit.

As Optimus prepared to block, he heard Ratchet's voice over the comm. "Yes, but I'm a bit busy."

"I need to get the power back on the Groundbridge system," Ratchet explained. "Can you do that?"

Optimus put on a steadfast look. "I will do my best, old friend.". He made a spin and punched Megatron back several feet, then turned in the other direction.

"Never took you for a coward, Prime!" Megatron mocked as he followed him.

"I just know what battles to pick!" Optimus called back as he ran through the Ark-27 looking for the power room.

Meanwhile, Sunstreaker was busy fighting off both Barricade and Skytread; the two cons had him outnumbered, and Sunstreaker found himself staring down both of them.

"Getting tired?" mocked Barricade.

"Not really," Sunstreaker said, but his panting said otherwise.

"Oh, I can't wait to rip you apart," Skytread remarked.

"Really? Wanna know what it feels like?" Sunstreaker teased.

Skytread put on an aggravated look and was about to charge when-

"Hey, Streak duck!" yelled Chromia as she in bike mode raced past Sunstreaker and around the cons.

Sunstreaker ducked without hesitation, and Barricade and Skytread soon saw why Chromia had asked that, as they saw Skywarp in jet mode coming right at them.

The three cons screamed, and Skywarp impacted both Barricade and Skytread in a massive crash of grinding metal. When Sunstreaker looked up, he saw the three cons collapsed in a heap on the ground.

"You couldn't have come to my rescue earlier?" Sunstreaker muttered

"Sorry, I was having too much fun." Chromia laughed as she transformed into robot mode.

"Sunstreaker, Chromia?! Are you there!?" came Ratchet's voice over the comm.

"We're here, Ratchet." Chromia said, "What's up?"

"I've got an idea on how to get rid of these cons, but I need you to get to the ground bridge control room and rewire it," Ratchet explained.

"We're not exactly tech experts…" Sunstreaker pointed out.

" I'll walk you through it. Just go!" Ratchet ordered.

"You heard the doc, Streak," Chromia said. "Let's go!" and she raced down the hall.

"Yeah, yeah, I'm coming," Sunstreaker said.

"You're not URG going anywhere!" Barricade shouted as he struggled to pick himself out of the mess his comrades were in before firing a shot at Chromia; the shot missed her, but it was close.

"Yep, time to split," Sunstreaker muttered.

Sunstreaker and Chromia entered the ground bridge control room and observed the wreckage the fight with Optimus, Ratchet, and the cons had left.

"Primus, what a mess," Sunstreaker muttered.

"What do you need us to do, Ratchet?" Chromia asked.

Ratchet grunted as a shot from Frenzy knicked him. "Open the compartment on the control panel!" he instructed.

Chromia and Sunstreaker walked over to the panel and did as Ratchet had told them to do.

"Okay, we see a bunch of wires," Sunstreaker reported.

"I need you to rearrange the wires in a specific order," Ratchet said.

"Got it. Which-" Chromia was interrupted when a shot grazed her head. She and Sunstreaker looked back and saw a very pissed-off-looking Barricade at the doorway to the room.

Chromia turned to Sunstreaker. "You get the wires; I'll take care of this guy!" she said.

"Got it!" Sunstreaker said.

Chromia charged in and tackled Barricade.

"Okay Ratchet, what do I do?" Sunstreaker asked.

"Just follow my instructions step by step…" Ratchet said.

Optimus made his way to the central power room, with Megatron following closely behind. Upon entering the room, he observed that the Decepticons had disconnected the ground bridge and communication systems instead of causing damage to the generator or destroying it. Optimus suspected that this was done to preserve the energon so that Megatron could appropriate it for his own use.

Wordlessly, Optimus began to work on connecting the systems back up when Megatron came up from behind and grappled him.

"Lights out Prime," he mocked. Then he started to squeeze, and Optimus groaned in pain as he felt his metal skin begin to crack.

Chromia punched back Barricade as Sunstreaker continued to work on the ground bridge control panel following Ratchet's instructions.

"Ratchet! I think I got it!" he announced.

Ratchet, currently taking cover behind a doorway, breathed a sigh of relief.

"Now all we have to do is wait for Optimus to turn the power back on!' he said. He tried to tune into Optimus's wrist comm. "Optimus, it's all on you; just turn the power back on!"

There was no response.

"...Optimus?"

All of a sudden, Brawn screamed in pain. Soundwave had managed to get a hit on him in the torso, and he fell to his knees.

Sunstreaker's elation from completing the work quickly faded as he heard a VOP. Before he could react, someone seized him by the head and forcefully flung him towards the ceiling. He collided with a loud thud and plummeted to the floor with an even louder crash.

Sunstreaker groaned on the floor and looked up, seeing Skywarp. "Hi," he said sadistically.

Then he jammed his fist into Sunsteaker's chest, causing him to scream in pain.

Chromia flung another punch at Barricade with her right arm, but the con grabbed it in midair.

"Do you have any other tricks besides punching?" he asked.

"Hah. I'm a jack of all trades," Chromia boasted.

"Prove it then," Barricade asked. Then he pushed Chromia against the wall with his foot, grabbed her right arm with both his hands, and pulled, ripping Chromia's arm out of its socket.

Chromia gave a yell of agony before Barricade tossed her to the side and kicked her in the gut.

Back with Brawn as he fell to his knees, he looked up and saw Starscream had walked over to him and was now pointing one of his wrist guns at his head.

"I'm going to enjoy this," Starscream laughed.

Ratchet gave a look of despair; he could feel his own injuries starting to catch up with him and slow him down. "Optimus, where are you!?" he muttered.

Optimus continued to groan in pain as Megatron continued to squeeze. The Decepticon leader moved one of his arms so he could aim his fusion cannon at Optimus's back.

"It's over prime; I won," he mocked.

"NEVER!" Optimus shouted, and he threw his head backward, colliding with Megatron. Megatron grunted and staggered back, releasing Optimus.

Optimus rushed over to the generator and turned it on.

The power came on all at once.

"Hey, what's that humming sound?" Skywarp asked.

"Sunstreaker now!" ordered Ratchet.

Sunstreaker put on a determined look, kicked Skywarp off of him, rushed to the control panel, and activated the ground bridge.

At that moment a ground bridge portal appeared in the room; it started making a sucking sound, and Skywarp, Barricade, Chromia, and Sunstreaker could feel it tugging on them.

"What the-" Skywarp began to say before Sunstreaker grabbed onto a nearby piece of equipment and kicked the Decepticon. With a cry, Skywarp was thrown into the portal.

"What did you do!?" Barricade asked.

Chromia smirked. She grabbed Barricade's leg. "Bye". She threw him in the portal's direction, and Barricade disappeared into it.

Starscream was about to shoot Brawn when a portal appeared in Ratchet's room. Thundercracker and Quake, who were the closest to the portal when it was opened, were sucked in immediately.

"WHAT!?" Starscream shouted. Brawn smirked and punched Starscream, knocking him into the air, leaving it much easier for the portal to suck him in.

"NOOOO!" cried Starscream as he vanished into the portal.

Soundwave tried to hold onto something as the portal's tug got more and more powerful. Ratchet, however, managed to shoot Soundwave, causing him to lose his grip, and he followed Starscream through.

"Hey boss, wait up!" shouted Frenzy, and he jumped through the portal after Soundwave.

Before Megatron could retaliate against Prime, he heard a sound behind him and saw a ground bridge portal had opened up.

He turned back to face Prime and smiled. "Clever," he said.

"Thanks, Optimus replied.

"It doesn't matter though." Megatron laughed. "Soundwave still managed to recover your data. I still win."

"Maybe, but I haven't lost yet," and with that, Optimus charged forward and punched Megatron, knocking him backward. With an amused laugh of respect, Megatron fell through the portal; once he was gone, the portal closed in front of Optimus.

Finally, Optimus let himself untense and breathed a sigh of relief. He turned on his comm. "Autobots. Are we good?" he asked.

"We're all clear, Prime." Sunstreaker reported. "All Decepticons are gone."

"Good," Optimus said. He then looked around the wrecked ship. "Now, let's clean up this mess."
