Hi everyone. I hope everyone's doing well. I apologize that I haven't updated this fic in quite a while. I had lost interest/inspiration for the fic. However, recently I've been going back and rereading a couple of my old published fics as well as some ideas for other multi-chapter stories as well as one-shots I'd had. Thank you for your patience

I DO NOT OWN ANY OF THE ORIGINAL HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON CHARACTERS, however some OCs are my own.

I hope everyone enjoys this new update. I love getting to read everyone's reviews and getting to hear y'alls thoughts and suggestions for the story going forward.

I am also open to story requests. Please send me a message with the story idea and any pairings you'd like to see.

Growing Up Within The Nest

Chapter 6

Forge stumbled as he tripped over the rocks, nearly sending himself tumbling to the ground in his hurry to get into the clearing. He picked up one of the rocks near the pond, throwing it as hard as he could with a roar of rage. He'd known that the dragons were hostages, that they were used for training. However, until today he hadn't realized just what that had entitled. The other teenagers had treated that 'training' like it was nothing more than a game. Toothless laid on his rock simply watching his brother. It wasn't often that he saw his brother lose control of his temper, something that wasn't an easy feat. Forge fought to control his anger, attempting to take deep breaths to sooth the burning rage back down. His hands remained balled into fists at his side as he glared at the water, his chest heaving with each breath. Toothless quickly shot forward when his legs seemed to give out, catching his brother. He felt Forge's fingers dig into his scales, fighting for breath. The black nightfury released a concerned growl as he slowly lowered himself to the ground.

"Bud…they see it all as a joke. The Vikings see their dragon training as nothing more than a joke to see who's the stronger Viking by killing dragons." Forge managed to whisper, his voice slipping into the familiar tongue he had grown up with.

"Forge it's going to be alright. We'll get out of here as soon as you have the new tail finished. Hopefully it won't be much longer." Toothless roared, resting his tail over his brother's shoulder. Forge managed a stiff nod, picking himself up off the ground. Hiccup fought to control his anger, attempting to take deep breaths to soothe the burning rage back down. His hands remained balled into fists at his side as he glared at the water, his chest heaving with each breath. He closed his eyes as he tilted his head back up towards the sky. The warm afternoon sun felt nice on his face, the heat reminding him of their home and of his forge. He would give more than anything to be back home in the glaciers with the Alpha and familiar dragons.

"I haven't had much of a chance to work on the tail the last couple of days. Their chief has been watching me too close, but he left along with over half of the tribe to go hunting for some mysterious nest. So, with his wife busy and the blacksmith training the other teenagers I should have a better chance to get into the forge without too many delays." The human male sighed, walking over to the rock his brother had been sleeping on. He sat in the dirt, grabbing a stick that wasn't lying too far from his side. Toothless sat with his head tilted to the side watching as his brother began to dig the stick in the dirt, absentmindedly drawing. Since his time with the Defenders of the wing there were many times he would distract himself with his drawings or his inventions, hoping to escape his training and the world.

"Forge you need to get back. The chief woman is looking for you." Flame roared, flapping her small wings to land on his shoulder. Forge released a small groan, leaning his head back against the rock. His scruffy brown hair fell in his face as he released a shuttered breath. He didn't want to go back to that village, back to the Vikings that only talked about killing the beasts and staring at him like he was some type of traitor.

Berk

Forge glanced around the village as he walked towards the forge. Several of the Vikings that had been left behind stopped whatever they were working on, glaring at him as he passed. He knew that none of them were ever going to trust him, but he wished that they'd stop making him feel like they wanted him dead.

"Hiccup there you are. Gobber said training went great today." Valka stated, walking towards her son with a proud smile. Forge only gave her a frown before he continued walking towards the forge, hoping to work on Toothless' tail fin without Gobber standing over his shoulder.

"Hiccup talk to me please. What's going on?" Valka questioned, following him. She reached forward, carefully resting her hand on his shoulder. He stilled for a moment, sucking in a deep breath to calm himself so he didn't start yelling at the woman.

"Hey, don't let the first day get you down. Gobber said you were the last one standing in training today." She commented, looking at him.

"Last one standing in a stupid training ground where dragons are being held hostage! Used as nothing more than training dummies!" He finally raged; his green eyes boring into the woman that didn't seem to see what he was trying to get across. Valka took a step back, taken aback by his sudden rage.

"Hiccup…we just want you to see what…what the rest of the village sees." She stated. When Hiccup had first been born, she'd been convinced that the dragons were just misunderstood creatures, that they didn't really want to fight them. But after her son was taken from the safety of their home during one of the late raids, Stoick had managed to convince her that the dragons were their enemies. Flying beasts that would kill anything that got between them and their food.

"You don't know anything about the dragons! And granted I don't know anything about these dragons because I don't know why they're attacking your village for food but that shouldn't matter! They're still living, breathing creatures!" Forge continued, not oblivious to the looks he was receiving from the Vikings standing around the village in earshot. Valka took a deep breath, looking up at her son concerned.

"Hiccup, this really isn't the time or place for this conversation. I will let you get to whatever you're trying to do but I will see you at home tonight." Valka sighed. Forge rolled his eyes in annoyance before he stepped into the blacksmith shop. Gobber glanced at the teenager but didn't stop him from continuing back to the workspace he'd set up in the back. Forge was silent as he pulled out the drawings he'd made for Toothless' tail piece. He worked on it for a bit before getting frustrated and shoved it aside to work on some of the weapons that Gobber had left for him to sharpen.

"What's got you so upset lad?" Gobber questioned, breaking the comfortable silence. Forge glanced at him for a moment, finishing on the sword that was in his hands before setting it to the side. He crossed his arms as he watched the blacksmith, noticing he didn't venture further into the room than the doorway.

"Just anger about being stuck here. Angry that I'm being forced to fight against the very creatures that raised me. And no one on this damn island seems to want to listen to anything I try to say without looking at me like I'm some kind of traitor or demon or something." He complained, the annoyance evident in the tone of his voice. He didn't miss the way the other Vikings looked at him like he was something they would scrap off the bottom of their shoes or clean from their weapons. They looked at him like he didn't belong in their village, which was something he could honestly agree with him on. He had been raised both by dragons and by people who saw dragons as friends and companions. He didn't have the heart to kill a dragon and it infuriated him that no one around him seemed to understand that.

"Hiccup this is your home. These are your people. If yer mother gets her way you will be the next chief of Berk. You've got to understand just where everyone is coming from." Gobber attempted to explain, hoping to be able to knock some sense into the lad.

"I don't want to be chief. I was happy where I was. Free to explore and fly wherever I wanted to." He snapped, slamming his hands down. Gobber quickly jerked forward when he slammed his hand down on the anvil, knowing the metal would be hot from his previous work. Forge looked at him, the confusion clear on his face.

"You do realize I was raised around creatures that breathe fire, right? And I have already been trained in a forge which is how I earned my name." he commented, holding up his hand to show no burn marks. Gobber could only grab it, turning it over in clear shock. Hiccup's hands were tough from clearly working very close with flames, the skin having clear calluses and scars.

"Earned your name?" Gobber questioned, looking down at the teenager. There were many things about Hiccup that confused, but his name among the dragons confused him the most. It didn't seem possible to speak the dragon's tongue let alone know as much as he did when working around the blacksmith shop.

"Yes, earned my name. Dragons aren't given names at birth. They have to earn them. And I earned mine by training with…a group of warriors that live PEACEFULLY alongside dragons." He snapped, glaring at the man that had taken him under his wing.

"Then why don't you do us all a favor and go back to them?" Snotlout's voice suddenly commented behind them. Hiccup couldn't help rolling his eyes as Gobber stepped aside, looking at the shorter teenager. He was standing with the two chaotic twins that he still hadn't been able to figure out which was the guy, and which was the girl. He only rolled his eyes before venturing back towards his private area. Gobber watched as the sheet fell over the doorway, blocking the young Viking from view. He grabbed the metal rod that he'd been working on, carefully fastening the leather he'd cut and sewn to properly look like Toothless' tail.

"Alright, I'll test it out tomorrow after their excuse for training." He muttered to himself, glancing down at the drawings and plans he'd been working on.

"Lad, I'm going to call it a night. Don't stay out to late or you'll worry yer mother." Gobber called. Forge watched as the candles in the front were blown out, the only light in the building the flickering of his own candle. He couldn't help rolling his eyes, releasing a sigh. While he didn't want to return to the house that had become like a prison, he knew that he needed to get some rest before being tossed back into the arena with the other teenagers. He carefully closed the tail before hiding it behind the chest that was pushed under the desk.

"Hopefully only a few more days of this." He whispered before blowing the candle out.

Chief's House

Valka was sitting at the table near the fire, watching the front door. She didn't like that her son continued to just disappear at random times and several of the others around the village had started to voice their own objections. He hadn't done anything to show them that they could trust him. She was jerked out of her thoughts when the front door opened, frowning when Hiccup walked in and headed straight for the stairs.

"Hiccup, wait. I want to talk to you." She called. He stopped on the stairs, released an annoyed groan before turning to look at her.

"I…I just…I don't want you going out into the forest for a few days. Several people around the village are starting to complain that you're up to something. And I don't want you to get hurt because of a misunderstanding." She quickly stated. Fury settled on his face as he stared at her, his eyes seeming to grow cold.

"So, you're just going to keep me a prisoner? Then take me out of your stupid training sessions and don't force me into the blacksmith shop!" he growled. He bawled his hands into fists, fire burning in his eyes.

"I'm not trying to keep you a prisoner Hiccup. I'm trying to keep you safe." She stated, the pleading tone in her voice clear. He simply turned away without giving her any other response, continuing up the stairs towards his room…his prison cell.

Hiccup laid on his back on the bed, watching the stars in the night sky as he attempted to figure out a plan how to get Toothless, the dragons currently kept prisoner in the arena and himself back to their safe island with the King of the Dragons. He refused to dance along to their tune, forcing him to be someone he wasn't, going against everything that he had been raised to value. Valka knocked on his door, pushing it open without waiting for a response. Hiccup didn't bother pulling his attention from the night sky, not caring to listen to anymore that any of the Vikings in the village had to say.

"I brought you some dinner. Gobber let me know you didn't leave the forge since you got back so you haven't eaten anything since lunch." She offered softly, lifting the bowl in her hands in a clear attempt at a piece offering. A sad, concerned frown crossed her face for a moment when her son continued to ignore her. She walked across the room towards the desk she'd fought Stoick to give him, placing the bowl down. Sketches of dragons she'd never seen before laid scattered across the wood, grabbing her attention.

"Are…these real?" She questioned, glancing at him as she picked up one of the sketches, looking over at him.

"Yes." He responded shortly, shifting enough to shove his arms under his head. Valka continued looking through the different sketches without offering another word.

"I'll…see you in the morning, okay? We can have breakfast before you have to go to dragon training." She offered softly.

I hope everyone enjoyed the chapter and please remember that reviews are always appreciated. I always read through all of them and try my hardest to respond to all thoughts, opinions, suggestions, questions, and any comments about mistakes I might have made. However, please remember that flames are not needed. I know this type of story is not for everyone and I would be happy to give possible suggestions to other fics I've read that might be a little more up someone's alley.

I truly appreciate all my readers for sticking with me as I continue this story.
