To the guest who reviewed on the 20/5/2020,

No, I'm not rewriting Special2401's stories. I've never actually read them. As I said in the first chapter this story is inspired by Everwood and Jane the Virgin. :)

Chapter four- Lift

This was never meant to be the end

Close the book and start again,

'Cause I know how hard it can get,

But you gotta lift…

You gotta lift.

And sometimes that's how it is,

But I know you're stronger,

Stronger than this,

You gotta lift,

You gotta lift….

-Lift, Shannon Noll

The next day- March 8th

It was 5am when three month old Grace woke her mother up for the 4th time. Jo groans in exhaustion as she makes her way over to the bassinet by the window.

"Why last night of all nights did you keep me up?" Jo asks as she picks up Grace, "mummy has to make a very important decision and I can't make it on two hours of sleep."

Jo sighs as she rocks Grace to sooth her, once she was calm Jo changes her nappy and gently dresses her for the day. She lays the baby girl in her crib and heads to Theo's room to gently begin to wake him. The three year old hated being woken up so Jo knew she had to strategically wake him, and that began with opening the curtains.

Once this was done Jo had a shower and changes into her clothes for the day. She heads back to Theo's room to see him beginning to stir. She gently rocks him and he opens his eyes, "Hey buddy. Rise and shine," Jo says quietly. Theo moans and stretches his arms around his mothers neck. Jo hugs her son and then helps him to get ready for the day.

It was 6:45am when Jo walks into the intern locker room in a daze, failing to notice her fellow interns chatting with each other.

"It's about time. We were wondering where you were," Heather states.

Jo, stuck in her head about making a decision regarding Chris' surgery, didn't hear Heather ask the question.

"Wow, are you ignoring us? What did we do?" Leah responds annoyed.

Jo shakes her head and snaps out of her thoughts, "hm, sorry."

"Are you okay?" Steph asks mildly concerned. Sure, she knew Jo had a habit of sneaking away to her own thoughts, but she'd never seen it this bad.

"I just have to make a decision today... a really big decision and I'm in my head about it," Jo responds. She proceeds to change into her scrubs and finds Dr Karev out in the lobby.

"You're here, good," Alex says as Jo walks up to him.

Jo nods her head, "right."

Alex passes Jo the tablet, "can you present the case to me?"

Jo looks ahead, without acknowledging the tablet in her hand or the question Dr Karev had asked.

"Wilson, are you in there?" He asks.

Jo shakes her head and snaps out of her daze, "What was the question?"

"Can you present the case to me?" He questions.

Jo nods her head, "Alfie Cordon, 14. Was admitted yesterday with a growth on his right Ulna. Bone biopsy confirmed that the growth was a benign cyst. Alfie is scheduled to have the cyst removed today."

"Okay, good. Prep him for surgery and I'll see you in the OR," Karev responds.

Scene break

After surgery

"Are you okay Jo, you've looked like you've had something on your mind all day," Alex asks as they walk into the scrub room after preforming Alfie's cyst removal surgery.

"Have you ever had to make a huge decision?" She questions as they both begin to scrub out.

"What kind of decision?" Alex queries.

"Life or death," Jo responds.

Alex looks over a Jo, "Almost everyday. We're doctors. Is this for a case? What's going on?"

"If somebody you knew had a small bone fragment lodged in their brain stem would you let doctors preform experimental surgery on them in the hope that they'd wake up? Or would you leave it in them with the small chance that they could wake up naturally?" Jo questions curiously.

Alex lets out a huge sigh, "is this a hypothetical?"

"I would prefer not to say," Jo states simply as they finish scrubbing out.

"If it was somebody I knew then I would do the surgery," Alex replies.

Jo sighs deeply and nods her head.

Scene break

That evening

Leah and Steph walk down the hallway of the neurosurgery wing of the hospital. The pair had assisted Amelia to remove a glioblastoma and had not long finished rounding on him post surgery. They stop at the nurses station and Steph hand over the tablet to the nurse behind the desk, "Thanks."

"I totally rocked that surgery, don't you think?" Leah asks Steph.

Rather then answering the question, something caught Steph's eye and she started to look straight through Leah and to the room behind the nurses station.

"Hey, is that Jo?" Steph asks as she points to the room.

Leah turns around and begins looks closely, "Yeah, I think it is."

"What is she doing in there? And is she crying?" Steph asks.

Leah nods her head, "you don't sit slumped over like that and be happy."

After a moment of thinking, Steph gasps. "What?" Leah asks.

"They have the same surname. Do you think they're related?" Steph asks curiously.

"What, like her brother?" Leah asks.

Steph nods her head. "Wilson is a common surname," Leah points out, "But She is always sneaking off. And we've never, not once seen her husband..."

"Should we go in?" Steph asks with uncertainty.

"No, it looks private," Leah responds.

"You're right, we should go in. She might need our support," Steph responds with a firm head nod. She takes Leah's head and pulls her towards the room.

"Not what I said!" Leah replies.

When they reach the door they stop.

"I made a huge decision today. I'm going to go ahead with the surgery. I've weighed all the pros and the cons and I think it's the best option... the best chance that we have of being 'us' again... Of the kids having their dad. There's a chance you could wake up without the surgery. But I know that I could never forgive myself if there was a chance of something better and I didn't take it... and I'm tired of just siting here in the limbo zone just hoping and praying for something to change. Everyday I break a little more when nothing does change. So the surgery... it's the best chance and we're going to take it. Dr Amelia Shepherd, she's one of the best, so you don't have to worry about that. But I know that you know that I'd never ever put you into the hands of somebody who wasn't the best. Her brother, Dr Derek Shepherd is even going to come back from DC to assist. So it's happening, next week. Thursday to be precise. I'm going to be a mess, so be prepared to listen to that for the few hours before your surgery. But now I... I have to go pick up the kids. I love you, and they love you and I hope that really soon we can be a family again... a real, proper family."

Jo turns around and jumps when she sees Steph and Heather standing by the door. "We didn't mean to overhear, we just wanted to make sure you were okay," Steph says.

"Does it look like I'm okay?" Jo asks weakly.

Steph shakes her head, "no."

"But thank you," Jo sighs. "And not a word to anyone. Nobody can know, you hear me?" She asks sternly.

Leah and Steph nod their heads, "not a word."

"Good, because the last thing I need is weird looks every time I walk down the hallway. I don't have the energy to deal with that too," She sighs.
