Chapter ten- Hold on for dear love

If we're not stupid,

We'll both hold on for dear love,

Find our way through this,

It's not worth just giving up,

'Cause I've got some fire left in me,

And I don't see us ending this way,

If we're not stupid,

We'll both hold on for dear love, love...

1 and a half weeks later- April 21st

Jo felt the weight of the world on her shoulders as she sat down in seat 27B of the Boing 737 that was going to take herself, her husband Chris, or Jake as he now called himself, and their two kids; Grace and Theo, on an 8 hour plane journey to Connecticut.

Jo sat in the middle seat while Grace sat on her lap, Theo sat in the window seat and Chris sat in the aisle seat.

"Are you excited to see your family?" Jo asks Chris as she bounces Grace on her knee to settle her. She was proving to be a little grizzly in the unfamiliar environment.

"I don't know ma'am," Chris replies simply.

Jo sighs, the extend on their conversations over the past weeks had been tense, simple at best. Unfortunately videos and photos had proved to be little help.

"You don't have to call me ma'am, Jo's fine," She replies.

"I can't do that. The way I was raised, it's yes Ma'am or no Ma'am," He replies simply.

Jo nods her head tensely, "I know you don't remember them, but they're your family and they love you a lot. They've wanted to come and see you, but life had other plans," Jo replies. Chris simply nods his head. "Boy, this is going to be a long day," Jo mumbles to herself.

'Ladies and gentlemen, my name is Shane and I'm your chief flight attendant. On behalf of Captain Jane Wallace and the entire flight crew, welcome aboard Delta Airlines flight 2882, a non-stop service from Seattle Washington arriving in Hartford Connecticut. Our flight time will be of 8 hours and 15 minutes.'

"Mummy, when we get there will daddy remember me?" Theo asks innocently.

Jo's heart breaks and she hesitates to answer because truthfully, she didn't know if he'd ever remember. Instilling false home into Theo was something she didn't want to ever do, but she could also see him getting sadder and sadder each time he called out for his dad, only to not be recognised.

"I hope so buddy, I really do," Jo responds, she pulls Theo in close to her side and gives him a a kiss.

'At this time, make sure your seats and tray tables are in their full upright position, that your window cover is fully open for takeoff and that your seat belt is correctly fastened. Your portable electronic devices must now be set to 'airplane' mode until an announcement is made upon arrival. Thank you'

"Can I have my lolly now?" Theo asks with a grin.

"When the plane is about to take off, remember?" Jo reminds him.

"Okay," Theo sighs with disappointment.

Jo turns to her husband, who was staring off into the distance, "we're going to stay with your parents for the next few days."

Chris slowly turns and looks at Jo, "complete strangers?"

"Well, maybe now, but I hope that when you meet them you'll begin to remember," Jo responds.

'Flight attendants and Cabin Crew, please prepare for gate departure'

Jo watches as Chris looks off into the distance again. She wondered what he thought about as he stared. That's if he was thinking about something because she wasn't entirely sure that he was.

'Ladies and gentlemen, I'd like to direct your attention to the television monitors. We will be showing our safety demonstration and would like the next few minutes of your complete attention'

Everybody turns their attention to the TV screen of the entertainment system and Jo ensured that Theo also turned his attention off of the window and to the screen located in the back of the seat in front of them and the video begins to play.

'You will find this and all the other safety information in the card located in the seat pocket in front of you. We strongly suggest you read it before take-off. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask one of our crew members. We wish you all an enjoyable flight'

"Lets just get this over with," Jo says stressfully to herself as she buckles her seat belt.

'Cabin crew, please prepare the cabin for take off'

"Lollipop mummy," Theo requests.

"Please," Jo reminds him.

"Pwease mummy," Theo says with a smile.

"Good boy," Jo replies. Jo unwraps the lollypop and passes it to Theo, who instantly puts it into his mouth.

Jo begins to pull down her singlet, which catches the eye of Chris, who promptly turns to look at her.

"Ah, what are you doing?" Chris asks.

"I'm going to feed her so that her ears equalise with the pressure," Jo replies simply.

"Make sure to cover up then. You don't need to be indecent," Chris requests.

Jo scoffs and rolls her eyes, "I want my husband back."

Scene break

The next day- April 22nd

They had been tracking through the the suburb of West Hartford for a little over 4 hours and tensions were running at an all time high. Chris meeting his family again didn't go as well as Jo had hoped and had resulted in a massive blow up from Chris.

Apparently he felt like they were projecting this life into him that wasn't his and to even get him out the door this morning was a massive task. Thankfully Chris' sister and brother, were watching the kids so that Jo and his parents could take Chris around the area.

"Where are we going now?" Chris demands as his mother pulls the car up outside a church.

"It's where we got married," Jo says with a smile. Taken by the breathtaking views of the mountain scape, Jo opens the door and steps out. She takes a deep breath and breaths in the crisp cold air.

After admiring the Church for a moment Jo walk towards it. She hears three car doors close behind her and soon sees Nathan and Alice walk into her view.

Chris stands back at the car looking perplexed, he knew that by her actions that this place meant something to her, but couldn't form the memory to have it mean anything to him.

Jo turns around and looks back at Chris. She walks back towards him and stands close to him, "please tell me you remember something."

Chris shakes his head as his parents begin to walk over, "no Ma'am,"

"Nothing? You don't remember running out of the church with me? Having our wedding pictures taken right there? Dancing under the night sky surrounded by family? Or having our first dance where you were so uncoordinated that you almost fell over?" Jo questions.

"Oh, I remember that," Alice laughs. "It wasn't a surprise either, when you were growing up you were hardly the most coordinated kid on the block."

"No, this is crap. Before I woke up, I remembered being on a farm in Tulsa with a pig named Gertie. And now I'm a freaking married father of two. This isn't the life I asked for. I didn't ask you to make me remember who I was, I like who I am now!" He snaps.

Jo, Alice and Nathan all stand in shock. Jo takes a step back and Alice places her hands on her shoulder, which Jo instantly flicks off, "no, I need a minute," Jo replies as her lips tremble. She turns around and walks away from everyone and over to a quite spot in the gazebo near the church.

"Was that outburst really necessary?" Nathan questions, "I understand that you're struggling. But there's no need to lash out at the people who are trying to help you."

Chris sighs, "I know. I know. It's hard, okay. I have this whole life that I can't remember, and I see how much she hurts every time I don't remember."

Alice speaks up, "I'm going to go see how she is."

Alice heads over to the gazebo and sits next to Jo "how are you going?"

"How am I doing? Really? I'm great. I'm freaking amazing. That man in there looks and smells exactly like my husband, only he's it my husband. He has a new identity... he goes by Jake now, 'Yes ma'am, no ma'am.'" Jo scoffs while trying to impersonate him. "And then there's this temper thing, I don't know where the hell that came from, but I gotta say, I'm not a fan. I mean, that isn't Christopher. That is some guy who is wearing Chris' face and who smells exactly like him. Exactly. He smells exactly like Christopher," Jo sighs as she begins to cry, "But, no, that isn't Chris. That's Jake, who is nothing like the man I fell in love with. And 'Ma'am', why does he call me Ma'am? Do I look old enough to be a 'Ma'am'? No. And I tried getting him to call me Jo, but that's apparently not how he was raised... because you and Nathan didn't raise him. Some freaking imaginary parents on a farm in Tulsa did!" Jo vents. She pauses for a moment to catch her breath, "sometimes he'll smile and my heart lights up because he's in there somewhere. Only that feeling doesn't last long... maybe half a second, because then he'll say something or do something that makes me remember that he has no freaking clue who I am... who our daughter or son are. I wanted him to wake up so badly, but now... now I regret convincing Dr Shepherd to operate on him because at least if he were still in a coma he'd be my husband and not a stranger. And that must make me a horrible person."

Jo rests her head on Alice's shoulder and breaths in and out deeply. "That doesn't make you a horrible person Jo, it just makes you human."

"Then why do I feel so bad for thinking that?" Jo questions.

"Because it's hard. It's been hard on all of us, but Jo, you've been the one there with him all of the time. Making decisions on his medical care, trying to raise two children and have a career, helping him to try and remember. And I partly blame Nathan and I for not being able to come out to Seattle when he woke. We are all doing the best we can with what we've got, so try not to be so hard on yourself."
