Chapter fifteen- Skinny love

Come on skinny love what happened here,

We suckled on the hope in lite brassieres,

My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my,

Sullen load is full, so slow on the split,

And I told you to be patient,

And I told you to be fine,

And I told you to be balanced,

And I told you to be kind,

And now all your love is wasted,

And who the hell was I?

'Cause now I'm breaking at the bridges,

And at the end of all your lines,-

Who will love you?

Who will fight?

Who will fall far behind?

Come on skinny love

-Skinny Love, Bridy

That evening- June 22nd

They had barley been honeymooning for a few hours when disaster struck. Jo didn't know what had happened, or even how it happened. He was fine, everything was fine until all of a sudden it wasn't. The rocky air ride to the hospital wasn't helping matters, and only made Jo feel more uneasy. What did help was the fact that she knew Amelia and Derek were going to be on hand to treat Chris, given his past history Jo wasn't going to have it any other way. It was now just mere minutes until they landed on the helipad and Jo could feel her heart beating further out of her chest with every passing second.

Flashback

Hours earlier

The scenery was stunning. The trees blowing in the breeze, the mountains on the hillside, the birds singing and the air so pure. It was the perfect honeymoon location. April certainly outdid herself.

"Wow, this is amazing!" Chris exclaims as he walks into the bedroom of the cabin they were staying in.

"April is something else, I'll tell you that," Jo agrees.

"I tell you what, she can plan our anniversary trips," Chris responds.

"We've never taken an anniversary trip our entire relationship," Jo responds as she sits down on the bed.

"I know, but we are now," Chris laughs.

Jo throws her bag to the ground, "you prep the bedroom. I'll prep myself," she grins.

"Gotcha," Chris grins. They share a short kiss before Jo heads into the bathroom. While she got ready Chris lit some candles, closed the curtains and blinds in the room and laid out rose petals for the night ahead.

Scene break

It was just past 1am when the impulsive urge came to Jo to bake a cake. "Babe, babe," Jo says as she gently shakes Chris.

"Are you okay?" He questions as he turns on the lamp beside him on the bedside table.

Jo nods her head, "I'm fine. But I feel like cake. We should make one."

"Make one?" Chris glances at the clock on the side table, "baby, it's a quarter past one."

"I know, I know. We should be sleeping. But it's our honeymoon and I really, really, really feel like cake," she begs.

Chris sits up in the bed, "Okay. But do we even have everything we need to bake one?"

Jo nods her head and smiles, "it's a fully stocked cabin. And besides, I'm sure we can leave some things out if we don't have them."

Chris tilts his head and laughs, "you do know that's not how baking works, right?"

"That's how regular baking works, not honeymoon baking. Honeymoon baking means that anything goes," she chuckles.

They both get out of bed and hold hands to get to the kitchen. As they reach each light switch they turn it on to light the way.

"I will find the mix master and plug it into the Power point. You get the dry ingredients from the pantry," Jo requests.

Chris nods his head and heads over to the pantry where he begins searching for everything he needs.

As Jo plugs in the mixmaster to the power point she hears a loud noise. It sounded like something falling and smashing on the ground, like a glass canister. Thinking that Chris hadn't been careful enough, Jo gives a little chuckle and turns around. When she turns around she freezes in horror. Chris hadn't dropped anything because he was clumsy, he was having a seizure.

In an instant Jo snaps out of it, "Oh my god, oh my god," she says panicked. She rushes over to him. She wanted to help him, but her medical training taught her that she needed to let him ride out the seizure, especially as she had no EPI she could administer to aide in stopping the seizure.

The seconds felt like hours as Jo knelt beside him waiting for the seizure to pass. As the seizure stoped Jo began to breath easier, although probably still faster then what was deemed healthy, "What... What..." Chris stutters.

"Shhh, don't talk," Jo requests. She begins to rub his forehead to calm him. "You had a seizure and you've hit your head. I'm calling an ambulance to take us to the hospital."

Jo rushes to the bedroom and grabs her phone. She quickly dials the emergency services number as she runs back out to Chris.

"Emergency services, what's your emergency?" The operator asks.

"I need an ambulance. My husband has a seizure and hit his head," Jo replies.

"Okay Ma'am, what's your address?" The operator asks. Jo thinks for a moment and provides the address for the woman, "thank you. An ambulance will take too long on road so I've dispatched an air ambulance. It will be there in under 20 minutes."

"Okay, good. But I... I don't know where it will land," Jo panics.

"What is your name?" The woman asks.

"It's Jo," Jo blurts out.

"Okay, Jo, my name is Amanda. I need you to take so deep breaths for me," Amanda requests. Jo does what she's told and breaths in and out deeply, "Jo. The air ambulance won't need to land. We can winch someone down to you and get you both up."

"Okay, Okay," Jo replies.

"Now Jo, so i can better equip the ambulance, I need to ask you some questions," Amanda requests.

"Okay," Jo responds.

"How long was the seizure?" She asks.

"1 minute and 45 seconds," Jo replies, "I wasn't able to give Chris any EPI to help stop the seizure. I had to let him go."

"Does Chris have a history of seizing?" Amanda asks.

Jo shakes her head, "no."

"And is he breathing and conscious?" Amanda asks.

"He's breathing... tacicardic. He is conscious, but confused and dazed," Jo responds.

"Jo, do you have any medical training?" Amanda asks.

Jo nods her head, "I'm a surgical intern."

"Okay Jo, I need you to keep an eye on Chris. Watch for any signs of brain injury and continuously check breathing. Can you do that for me?" Amanda requests.

"Yes," Jo replies.

"Good. I'm going to stay on the line until the ambulance arrives. They're 15 minutes away now. I need you to alert me if anything changes," Amanda responds.

The fifteen minutes felt like days for Jo, who spent the entire time sitting next to Chris and monitoring his vitals and for any signs of concussion and brain injury.

When the air ambulance arrived the paramedics swooped in and after an quick examination they evacuated both Chris and Jo and flew them into Grey Sloan memorial.
