Chapter nineteen- It's Gonna Find You
Love, it's gonna find you,
Oh, love is not gonna leave you laying alone forever…
Love, it's gonna find you,
Love, is not going blind to you,
Oh, love is not gonna leave you laying alone forever…
Don't give up shooting flares to the sky,
Cuz, Love, it's gonna find you,
Oh, love is not gonna leave you laying alone forever…
Love, it's gonna find you,
Love, is not going blind to you,
Oh, love is not gonna leave you laying alone forever…
-Bombs over nowhere
3 years later- July 1st 2016
Fourth year resident Jo Wilson moans in exhaustion as she pulls out a baking dish filled with pasta bake from the oven and places it on the bench. "Why did I agree to having your friends over for dinner?"
Alex chuckles and walks over to Jo, "because we want to tell them our big news."
Jo nods her head, "right, right. And it's not going to be stressful and everything will be perfect."
"Yes, it will," Alex agrees. Alex wraps his arms around Jo's waist and kisses the back of her neck.
"Good, I'm glad you agree because I have a plan and that's the way the plan is going," Jo responds.
"You and your plans," he laughs.
"I'm sorry. But I've always been able to fall back on a plan. I've had to have one. I needed a plan to get me through my childhood and to become a doctor. It was the only way I could see myself having a future. The need for a plan lessened when I had Chris... he taught me that I didn't always need one. But when he passed I needed a plan again to keep my head above water," Jo admits, "and I don't know if I'll be able to let go of them again."
"Jo, I'm not going to ask you to give up your plans. You and your insane planning are just one thing in a list of many things I like about you," Alex reminds her.
The sweet tender moment was abruptly interrupted when almost 7 year old Theo and 3 and a half year old Grace run naked through the kitchen and through to the playroom whilst giggling, "Hey! Walking feet!" Jo calls out. Jo turns back and looks at Alex and sighs, "sometimes an acknowledgement that I've spoken to them about running would be nice."
Alex chuckles, "Hey! Don't look at me, they're your offspring."
"Oh no, that is completely their father. Chris used to chase Theo around the house and ignore me when I called out for them to stop. It's the only thing that Chris would ignore and it's one of very few things that they ignore that I say," Jo responds.
"Do you want me to get them dressed? They'll be here real soon," Alex suggests.
Jo looks at him anxiously for a moment, "Ah," she begins before hesitating.
"I can do it Jo. I know my way around kids, I'm a Paeds surgeon, remember?" Alex responds.
"I know, it's just they're my kids. I feel bad," Jo admits.
"Well, you didn't ask, I offered," Alex reminds her.
"Okay then," Jo responds with a slight smile. "It's just Grace and Theo that need to be dressed. I got Ainsley ready after her bath, but I knew that Theo and Grace would do nothing but dirty their nice cloths. They're on my bed."
Letting Alex do things alone with the kids was something that Jo had been struggling to let him do. And it wasn't the fact that she didn't think he was capable, because Jo knew that he was. It was the fact that they weren't his kids, they were her responsibility. And a small part in her worried that by letting Alex do things alone with the kids, especially the things that Chris used to do, meant that he was replacing him... even though Jo knew that Alex never would.
Alex tracks down the kids while Jo continued to ensure that dinner was perfect. She placed the good plates and cutlery out on the table. Jo steps back to admire her work, "perfect," she compliments.
Scene break
"It's been so long since I've been over I've forgotten how nice your house is," April compliments as Jo leads Her, Arizona, Derek, Meredith, Steph, Cristina Callie and Jackson through to her dining room. Their respective kids were settled in the playroom with Theo and Grace while Ainsley, who was beginning to get hungry and fuss, was attached to Jo's right hip.
"It's small, I know it's small. But it works for me and the kids," Jo chuckles.
As you opened up the front door you immediately walked into the foyer which had a staircase. Right next to the stair case was a door and inside it was a closet. To the right was a large living room which doubled as a study. Off the living room was the dining area and a small kitchen. There was a door off the kitchen to a garage. To the left of the foyer was the kids playroom. Off the back of the playroom was a hallway which housed the toilet room on one side and a European style laundry in the other. The hallway connected the playroom to the kitchen. The bottom story of the house was surrounded by a porch.
Upstairs were four bedrooms, a toilet room, main bathroom and ensuite off the master bedroom. The house was small, but it worked for the family of five.
"Well, it's still nice," April compliments.
"Red, you don't have to be nice, she's already your friend," Yang adds.
April turns back to Cristina and gives her some side eye before sitting down at the table.
"Ainsley is starting to get hungry so how about the kids eat first?" Jo suggests.
Meredith, Derek, April and Jackson nod their heads, "Kids! Dinner!" Jackson calls out.
Promptly, Grace, Theo, Bailey, Zola, Sofia and April and Jackson's daughter, Hannah rush to the dining area.
"Wow, they actually listen to you?" Cristina responds astounded.
"Food, it's one of the few things that children can be bribed with," April chuckles.
The parents get the kids settled at the kids table and Jo hands out bowels of pasta bake to everyone before taking her seat at the table.
"Hairball, I'm guessing you didn't invite everyone over here for small talk," Cristina speaks up.
Jo anxiously rubs her hands together, "there is something that I..." Alex takes a hold of Jo's hand and she clears her throat, "we, wanted to say."
"And?" Meredith questions.
"We're dating," Jo blurts out.
"Oh, okay. Is that the big news, or...?" Cristina questions.
"Yeah, that's it. Why aren't you all surprised?" Alex asks surprised.
"Because we all knew," April grins.
"You knew!" Jo responds shocked.
"Mm," everybody agrees.
"We've known for the past month," Derek adds.
"What! How?" Jo demands.
"Because Karev hasn't been so mean to all of his interns," Steph speaks up.
"And you've been the happiest we've seen you since Chris," Jackson adds.
Jo nods her head slowly and Alex looks over at her supportively. "Well, we're taking it slow. We don't know where this is going and Jo's got the kids to consider," Alex responds.
"So you're essentially telling us that you're not shaking up and you won't be shaking up for a while," Jackson adds blankly.
"Well no, as Alex said, we're going slow. Like really slow," Jo reiterates.
Cristina gasps, "wait, does that mean you haven't, you know?"
Jo shakes her head, "I'm not ready... I've only had sex with one person in my life and he died. It's a big deal and I wasn't exactly expecting Alex to ask me out, let alone for it to lead to something more then friendship."
Meredith begins to chuckle, "Karev, you're going to get horney and agitated soon."
"I understand and support your decision," April speaks up.
"Thank you," Jo sighs stressfully.
Thankfully the night continues without a hitch and a few hours later everybody left feeling full while Jo and Alex were left astounded by the reception of their big news and coming to terms with the fact that everybody knew and that they hadn't been as secretive as they thought they had been.
