This particular Tuesday night could be described as rather ordinary for most of Elmore's residents, save for the unusually cold breeze that swept the valley. This was not the case for Gumball Watterson, because for the first time in his sixteen year life, he had managed to catch a date.
Better yet, he'd managed to catch a date with Penny. It was definitely uncommon for someone of her status to be out with, frankly, someone of his. But god help him if he didn't take the opportunity.
He stood in front of the mirror, peering into his reflection. Sharp, he thought, although he'd definitely need a hoodie with tonight's unusual chill. Though with Penny by his side for the night, he didn't think that'd be an issue.
Gumball was filled with excitement at the prospect of going out with Penny. She had a mysterious and humble beauty about her, in both personality and looks. How someone so drop dead gorgeous could be so humble and down to earth utterly confused Gumball, especially with waves of Elmore High's most popular students clawing to get in her pants every five seconds. He couldn't help but compare himself to them- and that tiny insecurity would keep nipping at him. What if she didn't really like him? Or what if this was some elaborate prank conjured by her and the football team to embarrass him? He pushed down these thoughts in favor of a more positive and realistic outlook. Penny wasn't the type to do that shit, he knew that much of her. If she asked him out, it was because she was genuinely interested in him. The thought filled his chest with warmth and a feeling of acceptance- that she chose him over all the other boys at school. Perhaps he wasn't as invisible as he thought.
On that matter, he certainly wasn't invisible tonight. Gumball's choice of casual yet stylish outfit was instantly approved by Darwin. His hoodie accentuated his lean yet fit build perfectly, with the slightly baggy jeans matching that flair. Hell yea, he was kicking ass tonight.
7:30. It was time to pick her up.
The entire Watterson family accompanied Gumball out the front door, congratulating him and wishing him luck. Darwin cheered wildly, slapping Gumball on the back as he waved him goodbye. The honda waited patiently for its driver to climb in, the seat next to Gumball begging to be filled. His time had come.
Oh shit, this is really happening, Gumball's thoughts screamed on repeat as he sped down Elmore's roads, his GPS giving directions towards Penny's house. His heart thumped in anticipation and nervousness as the honda turned into Penny's street.
He was here. Oh god.
Gumball turned his ignition off, his keys shaking in his palms. He groaned in nervousness before slamming his head on his steering wheel.
"Holy shit, I'm actually doing this right now." He said to himself, gripping his car keys with a ferocious intensity. His legs shivered underneath the dashboard, his skin quivering in a blend of excitement and nervousness.
"Deep breaths…" he inhaled, letting the cool air fill his lungs before exhaling, his body beginning to relax from the circulation of oxygen. He was ready.
"You are going to go out there and show her a damn good time, Gumball." He told himself with confidence. "Just have a good time, and don't fuck it up. That's easy enough."
With that, he mustered up the courage to open the car door and step into the dusk. Penny's house was right in front of him. She was waiting.
Just a few steps.
The outside of her house was something to behold- quaint and lovely yet radiating humility. Little beds of flowers lined the steps to her door, carefully planted and tended to. The warm, orange light coming from lanterns hung on the walls gave the place a homely atmosphere. It was inviting and comforting all the same.
With a slight trepidation and overwhelming anticipation, Gumball raised his fist and knocked on her door.
And when it answered, it was not Penny standing in the light of her home before him, but her father.
Gumball let a small gulp escape him as he stood before the burly man. Six foot two, with thick muscles and a huge build. His light brown beard, full with manliness and confidence. His eyes were a piercing deep brown, steeled and dominating.
The teenager inhaled. Confidence was key, he couldn't fuck this up.
"Hello ma'am-"
Patrick Fitzgerald gruffed in annoyance. It took all of two seconds for this boy to slip up. But Gumball wouldn't let him win.
"Hello sir. My name is Zach Watterson, it's an honor meeting you."
The older man stood, stoic and unmoving. If not nervous, the kid at least had some sense to show respect. That he could appreciate, although it'd take more than that to win his approval.
"My name is Patrick. To you, I am Mr. Fitzgerald. Understood?" He spoke with a dominating disposition, commanding his words from his chest.
"Understood, sir." Gumball stuck his arm out for a handshake, which was reciprocated.
Firm enough, although his form could use work, Patrick thought. He looked the kid up and down, sizing him up. Decent height, healthy, and having a modicum of composure. He would meet the bare minimum for his daughter.
"You're here!" Penny rushed down to greet Gumball. "We'll be back by eleven, dad." She smiled at her father, who simply nodded in response. "Bye!" She grabbed Gumball's arm, rushing him out the door before Patrick closed it behind him.
Penny turned back towards Gumball, wincing. "Sorry about my father. He's the protective type." She said, walking to the honda.
"No shit." Gumball laughed before climbing into the car, igniting the engine. He pulled off into the street, the sun now a fading imprint on the dark blue sky. Gumball's mind raced with a million swirling thoughts as his eyes locked on the route ahead. Penny looked absolutely stunning (as always), and talking to her during the ride was a joy in itself.
Penny's heart was absolutely racing. She finally managed to get Gumball to go out with her, and the anticipation was absolutely twisting at her chest. Her thoughts were of excitement, and she radiated that energy beautifully. It was going to be quite the night, indeed.
Her phone buzzed. Penny reached into the pocket of her tight jeans, annoyed at how small the damn things were, before tugging out the cell. It was a text from Masami.
[M: omfl penny i cant believe ur going out w him !]
[P: STFU LMAO HES CUTE ASF]
[M: and you like him over tobias? Pls]
[P: BRO U DONT EVEN KNOW hes adorable 333]
[M: ugh if you just liked tobias this would all be so much simpler]
[P: hell nah if he cant handle being rejected thats his issue]
[M: whtv you say lmaoo]
Penny rolled her eyes. What was so hard to accept about her just wanting to be friends with Tobias? It was like everyone expected the cheer captain to date the quarterback. Things just don't work out that way outside of bullshit movies.
"Finally here!" Gumball could barely contain his excitement as they reached the parking lot of Daisyland. It was a place of childhood memories, insanely good theme park food, adrenaline pumping roller coasters, and now, teenage romance.
The pack was packed. Neon lights and themed music filled the space with a nostalgic, atmospheric vibe as the joyous screams of park goers echoed throughout the air. It was quite the perfect place for a first date. Gumball felt a warmth in his chest, the feeling spreading throughout his body as he felt the night's chill fill his lungs. This night would be amazing,
"I used to come here all the time~" Penny giggled out of an overwhelming combination of reminiscence and excitement, her eyes lighting up like the stars in the sky. Her smile shaped into a smirk as eyes bent into a sultry gaze. She rounded the front of the car to approach her date. "What are you waiting for~?" Penny said. Gumball rubbed his hand on the back of his head. "Sorry, aha, just caught up in the moment, I guess," he responded. She stifled another tiny laugh with her hand as she took Gumball's arm in her grip, tugging him to the entrance. With that, Gumball and her took off for the theme park.
Penny's body shivered in thrill as she took Gumball by the hand, weaving and running together throughout Daisyland. Her magic left him utterly tongue tied, to say the least.
"I'm definitely winning!" Gumball narrowed his vision on the target before them. He unleashed hell on it, the full force of the water gun unloaded on the game's trial. Penny matched his fury with a challenge of her own. She could not let him win this if her life depended on it.
He won. "YES!" Gumball pumped his fists in the air, laughing in enjoyment at his victory. Penny stood up in a mock pout. "I had no idea you were such a good sharpshooter~" She rolled her eyes before giggling.
"Best believe it," he feigned a yawn. "Didn't even try."
The two walked hand in hand through the Daisyland paths, winding through warmly lit buildings and rides of all kinds. Gumball was busy thoroughly enjoying the churry in his left hand, savoring the cinnamon crisp and gooey insides as Penny exhaled a mocking sigh.
"Guys and food. Is that all you boys think about?" She asked.
"I can name one more thing we think about," he responded, his face morphing into a shit eating grin.
Penny's cheeks flushed red as she pushed her date away. "Wow, real mature," she said, her eyes intensely focused away from him.
Gumball pulled her back in, wrapping his arm around her. "Not that you mind," he jested with a smirk.
She rolled her eyes, falling back into his embrace. "Maybe I don't~", she responded.
"I thought as much," he said. The pair continued their adventure, giggling and laughing with each other as they enjoyed the night together.
"And there it is," Gumball said, a gulp forming in his throat. Stomach Destroyer itself stood in all her glory before the couple. It was a monsterous coaster; the initial 240 foot drop alone outclassed everything else Daisyland had to offer, but that combined with the gut wrenching loop and numerous dive rolls made the Stomach Destroyer the crown jewel of coasters in all of California. Penny, of course, was immediately racing for the line.
"Gumball, you better come with me~" Penny teased. The boy in mention felt his stomach drop at the prospect of going anywhere near that steel death machine.
"Ehhhhhhh, I think I'll pass-" he responded, his eyes widening as his pupils trained on the beast. Penny spun to face him, leaning forward with a smug grin.
"So you're a chicken?" She said.
"I am not! It's just, literally look at that thing," he shuddered, "Darwin would shit bricks just being near it."
"But I'll need company~" Penny said with a hint of a smirk.
Gumball put his hand on his chin, appearing to thoroughly consider the proposition at hand. But before he could come to a decision, he found himself being dragged in by Penny. Great.
The coaster creaked up the starting hill, each tiny movement of its steel beams causing a deathly fright in Gumball. And of course, of all places, Penny made him sit with her in the front row. He may as well write his will now.
"Dear Lord, our heavenly Father," Gumball started, making a cross motion on his chest. "To our souls must You grant salvation-"
Penny slid her hand onto his, coyly smiling as she massaged the backside of his hand with her delicate fingers. The soothing motion caused Gumball to blush furiously, stammering his words as the Stomach Destroyer continued its slow ascent.
"So just in case I die here," Gumball said, "I want you to know that I do really like you, like as a person, you know-"
Penny tightened her grip on his hand as the coaster began to round the top of the hill. "I know," she giggled. "And I like you tooooOOOO~"
Her soft yet bubbly voice morphed into a scream as the Stomach Destroyer plunged down its initial drop, Gumball's gut tightening as he felt gravity's force punch him like a boxing bag. The coaster swooped and dived through the rolls and drops. Its elegance was only matched by the sheer thrill it instilled in its passengers. Gumball, of course, squeezed Penny's hand the entire time.
By the time the steel behemoth had rolled back into its station, the pair was utterly tossed and turned in every direction, leaning on each other and holding the other up for stability as they made their way out of the exit line.
"So," Penny managed to get out as she leaned on a nearby bench, trying to control her breathing as she blew air in and out of her lungs. "How worth that ride was holding my hand?"
"Mmm," Gumball paused for consideration, himself feeling his adrenaline coursing through his veins from the thrill of his life. "Maybe an eight?"
Penny smirked in satisfaction. "A B, huh? I'll take it~"
The night, indeed, was amazing. Gumball, even, was shocked at how well things panned out so far. Penny was quite the girl to be around and hang out with. In his head, she was a dream boat.
Those thoughts of romance lingered in his head as the two made their way back through Daisyland. With the time being 10:40, the park was due to be closed in less than an hour. And of course, Patrick demanded his daughter to be home by 11:00. There was no way Gumball would defy that order. He shuddered just thinking of that man. He would certainly be able to break his neck in an instant.
Penny sighed in contentment, her left arm and hand locked around Gumball's. For once, she thought, there was a guy genuinely interested in her as a person. And he was right here, in her grasp, for the taking. All that she needed was to seal the deal. Time to up her game.
Penny let out a romantic sigh, leaning her head on Gumball's shoulder as they exited Daisyland and walked through the parking lot together.
"Good date?" She asked, tilting her head up from Gumball's shoulder with an adorable smile.
The boy's heart melted at this. "Obviously," he said, "We gotta do this again."
"Agreed," Penny responded, moving closer to his side. Unfortunately, she had to break off him when they arrived at Gumball's honda. The drive home was warm and content.
Gumball walked Penny out to her front door. He checked the time; 10:58. Perfectly punctual.
"See you tomorrow?" He winced at his awkwardness. Dammit.
"Of course~" She responded. Why isn't he making a move?
"Great thennnn," Gumball slowly began to walk backwards as he spoke, "Yeaaaa-"
He gasped as Penny rushed forwards and spun him arounds, making him face her. Without a word, she cupped his face and kissed him in the cool night breeze.
Gumball was utterly speechless. Her lips felt warm, and every movement sent jolts of electricity spiking through his body. His heart pounded in his chest, smothering his body in love with every beat. He wrapped his arms around her, holding the back of her head as he deepened the kiss. It was heaven on earth.
Penny slowly broke the kiss, resting her hands on Gumball's chest as she huffed in relief.
"I was NOT about to let you get away without that kiss~" she breathed out.
"Holy shit," Gumball started, "That was amazing."
Penny giggled, the laughs causing her body to tremble in his arms. "Did you expect any less?"
Gumball was preparing to respond as both of them heard Patrick heading for the front door. His footsteps were audible, even from outside the house.
"To be continued!" She laughed as she ran back to her house. "Goodnight~!"
Gumball's face was glued into the biggest smile he had ever experienced. He stood there, waving her goodnight as he saw her ridiculously hot frame disappear behind the door.
